Obama’s Faith-Based Programs Pushing Global Warming, Climate Change, Green Issues
by Warner Todd HustonWidely reviled by the left, Bush’s faith-based initiatives were claimed to be evidence that Bush was a “religious zealot” trying to destroy America with evil Christianity. Now, two years into the Obama administration, we are seeing what Obama intends to do with his continuation of Bush’s faith-based offices: he wants to use them to push the religion of Greenicanism on America’s churches.
This month Obama’s Advisory Council on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships issued its final report of recommendations and the result is nothing short of astonishing. (download .pdf file)
The question that immediately comes to mind, of course, is if the left will explode in excoriation of Obama’s faith-based policies as it did with Bush’s?
The left was out of its mind over Bush’s ideas. In 2004, for instance, the website TheocracyWatch.org hyperbolically said, “Under the Bush administration, our country is experiencing a major transformation from a secular to a religious government. The President’s faith-based initiative is central to this transformation and raises serious questions about church-state separation.” This was the left-wing talking points du jour on Bush’s faith-based programs.
It wasn’t just the left, but even from the libertarian side Bush’s ideas were attacked. Alex Epstein of the Ayn Rand Institute said that the faith-based initiative was a “direct violation” of the Constitution.
And the media universally hated the idea. Lew Daly of Boston Review magazine tried to color Bush’s program as a “seismic change in American politics,” and for The New York Times Ron Suskind breathlessly burbled that Bush had, “created the faith-based presidency.” And those were what passed for the civil proclamations, others were more nutty by claiming that Bush was a religious zealot that was destroying the country through that evil Christianity stuff.
Candidate Obama was widely expected to dispense with the faith-based office. But in 2008 when the AP reported that Obama intended to leave the Bush faith-based programs in place, the left was apoplectic. Rev. Barry Lynn, executive director of Americans United for Separation of Church and State criticized Obama over it. “I am disappointed that any presidential candidate would want to continue a failed policy of the Bush administration,” Lynn said. “It ought to be shut down, not continued.”
After the AP’s report candidate Obama himself spun reports as a distortion. In July of 2008, Obama addressed the issue in a speech in Zanesville, Ohio.
“Now, make no mistake, as someone who used to teach constitutional law, I believe deeply in the separation of church and state, but I don’t believe this partnership will endanger that idea – so long as we follow a few basic principles. First, if you get a federal grant, you can’t use that grant money to proselytize to the people you help and you can’t discriminate against them – or against the people you hire – on the basis of their religion. Second, federal dollars that go directly to churches, temples, and mosques can only be used on secular programs. And we’ll also ensure that taxpayer dollars only go to those programs that actually work.”
As with most things that Obama says, this claim that was then. While Obama is following the left-wing penchant to eschew actual religiosity, Obama has apparently decided that his own special brand of religion would be what is promulgated with his continuation of Bush’s faith-based policies. The money he’s spending to “proselytize” his green ideas apparently doesn’t strike him as a violation of his 2008 proclamations.
Recently Meghan Clyne wrote an excellent piece in the Weekly Standard that detailed how Obama is using his faith-based program to push global warming, climate change, and green initiatives on America’s churches and he’s doing so by brazenly coupling his faith-based council with the Environmental Protection Agency.
Apparently, the president’s council envisions the “partnership” between government and religious institutions as a means of spreading the administration’s environmental warnings, rather than just a way to help churches feed the hungry and clothe the poor. Faith-based organizations, the report notes, can take “a prominent leadership role in influencing policy, education, and action in those areas.”
…The council hopes the new EPA faith office will also help churches and other nonprofits improve “access to financing,” including “establishing revolving loan programs or working with utility companies to help finance greening building projects.” The ultimate aim of all this government-supported retrofitting is clear: “Regional staff would work to engage local faith-and community-based groups to help meet Obama administration targets for greening buildings and promoting environmental quality.”
So, Obama wants to use federal subsidies offered through he EPA and his faith-based outreach to get churches to promulgate the green faith.
Of course, it’s hard to see Obama’s use of faith-based initiatives to push his environmental message and spending millions of tax dollars to do so differs in any material way when measured by the left’s anti-Bush yard stick when they criticized his policies. The left universally cried that Bush was cynically using religion to further his political policies. No one can look at Obama’s current policies and see any reason to excuse him from being smeared with the same brush the left used to tar Bush.
Clyne also makes a seminal point. “Perhaps it’s only reasonable that global-warming activists would turn to God for help as the scientific case for their position collapses,” Clyne wrote. It’s all as if “Climategate had never happened,” she says.
It is indeed.

Right now the elephant under the rug, is the disaster in the Gulf, and the BP oil spill. It is an ecological disaster of epic proportions. Currently, the Obama Administration has not quite figured how to use it to their advantage. When they do, look out, all bets are off. There is more political capital swirling in the waters of the Gulf than anywhere, in any issue. Obama just needs to be slick enough, to seize on the slick and gain traction…….
Well, nothing like fake Christian groups to push atheist and socialist programs on a gullible public.
That would be like conservatives rounding up marxists and atheists to push push for fiscal responsibility, Constitutional government, and God given individual rights — nobody would believe that either.
Bush’s faith-based initiatives were well intended but as we can now see, they were just another intrusion by government into our lives. Give them an inch and they will take a mile.
Let's hope so, although looking at the people in the church today I would not be surprised if a large number of them go for this crap.

There will be plenty of pastors that will push the Obama agenda. For example, The National Council of Churches is a huge fan of Castro's Cuba; this should be all the evidence needed to see that some of those who profess to be men of God are actually not.

I didn't like this office when Bush instituted it, and this is precisely why. Obama didn't like it of course, at least until he saw the potential. No proselytizing, indeed. When you get the government involved in issues like this, no matter how benign, you get actions like this. Note Obama's original concerns with it – it was all what the faith-based organizations couldn't do, and nothing about restrictions to government power. Yet this situation is exactly why the establishment clause was written, it was a check of government coercion on religion. Now, thanks to the well-meaning actions of President Bush, the government pays the piper – and is trying to call the tune.

I say it's time to stop all government grants to all NGOs. They need to stand on their own. Many are flooded with so much money they have problems finding a place for it. Even the foundations that fund NGOs have such an overabundance of funds that they often place funds at cross purposes. Most have been taken over by left wing, subversive groups anyway, even though they may have started out with more patriotic goals of supporting individualism instead of collectivism.

I have had a "prayer meeting" with my kids about taking ANY federal money for any program offered. Gov't loans have always been a trap enslaving anyone who participates with YEARS of debt.
DO NOT LET YOUR KIDS BORROW GOV'T MONEY FOR COLLEGE! Do what you gotta do. Pick affordable schools and save, save, save. Federal gov't, through their college loan program is creating an entire social class of indentured SERFS!
Gov't Mortgage Relief..NOT!
Even if you qualify, if you don't get a job in the designated 9 months, you're OUTTA THERE and the guys who actually put up the MONEY for your loan get your house. Expect in 9 months to see a GLUT of vacant, virtually uninsurable homes on the market, losing value by the day and dragging YOUR property values down with them!
And that doesn't address the issue of the foreclosure opportunists who come in, slap a coat of paint on the house, clean up the yard and price it for a fast flip. They will, I suspect, NOT do the RETROFIT that EPA regs will require…leaving new buyers with thousands of dollars owed in upgrades for that "bargain" house.
Dealing with any gov't program at any time has been dicey, but never more so than now.
I for one am optimistic. I am optimistic in the average American. I am optimistic that the average American is inherently good. I am optimistic that the average American has grown tired of the bureaucracy and misguided policies of the current administration and the Democratic majority in congress. I am optimistic that almost every credible poll indicates that the majority of Americans are center-right and favor conservative values. I am optimistic that angry and hateful supporters of the prog-lib agenda will continue to further alienate the American public. I am optimistic that the tide of independent and moderate voters have realizer their current government does not care a bit what they think. I am optimistic that conservative candidates, running on conservative principals will emerge. I am optimistic that the current group of incompetent progressive liberals in government that care only about their own personal agendas will all be out of work later this year, and in another two years we will have a competent person occupying the White House.

Congress, based on its sacred oath to protect and defend the Constitution from all enemies, both foreign and domestic, is the legal authority which is accountable and responsible for upholding the supreme laws of the land, the Constitution. They cannot delegate or abdicate this responsibility!
If all Congressional representative fail to step forward and do their job, as has been the case, else, if necessary, “we the the people” have the responsibility to step forward and do it for them. If so, it will not be pretty! Doing nothing, is NOT an option.

Agreed, but that doesn't account for all the federal dollars given directly to the colleges. It's becoming harder and harder to avoid that federal domination.

IMO, these mortgage relief programs are specifically designed to get lots of property into the hands
of the US Gvt. who will then 'choose' your next new neighbor. I predict Gvt subsidized rents for low

How will they get around the primary lenders? The guys who actually put up the money for the mortgage? Won't they expect a fair return for their investment?
If the gov't buys the property from the original lender, how will they "subsidize" the lower rent they will charge? I mean, we ARE BROKE, RIGHT? Where will the subsidy come from?

Faith based chariities such as the Salvation Army, Catholic Social Services and their Protestant and Jewish counterparts do a much better job than government when it comes to serving the poor and the mentally ill. They do it smarter and cheaper. I understood Bush as trying to take more of these social services away from gov't and into private hands. It made sense to me at the time. Of course, the union funded Dems crushed that idea.

This statement shows, beyond doubt, the total ignorance or malevolence of Obama. There is no Constitutional bar to cooperation between church and state…only that the State may not establish a religion and compel its citizens to participate therein. In fact, one of the first widely available Bibles in the United States was printed by the US Congress and distributed to schools!
In fact, the case could be made that the Federal Government could be found guilty of violating the establishment of religion clause in that they are compelling its citizens to participate in wiccanism, or nature worship, by passing Cap and Trade. We have all said that the "Green Movement" and "Global Warming Movement" have a component of religious zealotry and fervor to them. Nature worship IS a recognized religion. Wiccans enjoy tax exempt status as a church based on their nature worship. Is the Federal Government not favoring this religion with its actions and policies? You be the judge.

This is clearly an abridgment of 1st Amendment religious freedom, as well as other 1st Amendment clauses. The government CAN NOT tell a legitimate religion how to conduct its affairs. Period! When I donate to a church, I do not presume that that confers upon me the right to dictate the canons and dogma of that church. No such right exists for me, nor does it exist for the government.
Obama is out to destroy this country and he is using every deception in the book to achieve that end. See him for what he is and remember it well when you vote in November. Take away his support in the Congress and tie his hands until 2012 when we can banish him completely.

The use of the 'Faith Based Initiatives' depends on your 'Faith'. Many say B_O is a Muslim. This is wrong. From all indications he is a Marxist. His religion is the State. His only faith is a belief that the State has all the answers, and therefore should have all the control. Faith in god's only use is to control the people. From what I have seen and read, a growing number of folks under 50 years of age think the government socialized systems of "free goodies" is a right not a detriment as long as the check keeps arriving on time.
This all began in the late sixties in our dumbed down educational system which began preaching socialism, PC, and diversity while degrading individual thought and achievement.

Just remember one thing in all of this. What can be done, can be undone. Never before has A FREE NATION become enslaved. Countries that were monarchies, or theocracies have "fallen" to socialism and marxism, but NO FREE PEOPLE have gone willingly into slavery to the state.
Free people do not, will not forget what freedom looks and feels like. Just as now we are furious and we are mobilized, so will we continue to be as the gov't continues to TRY to change this nation. HC will, I predict, NEVER see the light of day as is. By the time new congresses defund, amend, and ADD NEW elements to it, it will morph into something more capitalist in nature.
I believe we can do this. I believe we will, over the next 3 election cycles, if not remake congress in the exact image of the Constitution, certainly drive ALL of congress toward fiscal conservatism. And much of the excess gov't will die from starvation.
We cannot spend, as fiscal conservatives, therefore each successively more conservative congress will cut and cut and whittle, until we get a better handle on this. So whatever gov't buys today, we sell back to investors and pvt industry tomorrow.
I know that's an over simplification but bottom line, socialists, marxists, just greedy nutball lefties have NEVER had to deal with a FREE people. Whoever "they" are, they will NOT win.

The real uncertainty about man-made climate change is not whether its happening but how fast its happening and that in fact there is increasing evidence that the mainstream science of the IPCC is actually underestimating the scale and imminence of the threat.

You must understand the nature of his game in order to have a correct understanding the symptom you observe. His true goal is to infiltrate, undermine and pervert the Church. It is an obstacle to his objectives – total dependence of the populace to Government (Federal Government). Anything that stands in the way of that must be either co-opted, incorporated or destroyed.
Tyrants do not share power. Confusion and deceit are his weapons. His strategy is to set us one against another and let us do the lion's share of his work for him. He will then step happily into the vacuum and assume \”his rightful place\”.

You misquote the Constitution, for your own corrupt ends. It doesn't say the government can't establish a religion, although what it does say would prohibit that, as well. It says the "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion," which is wildly different in meaning from your misquote.

Humans are a species and a part of the natural environment, as well. Due to our sentience, we have special obligations and rights. We don't have the right to ruin it all.
You don't have the right to pretend humans are the only reason a species might go extinct, nor to pretend that humans are extra-natural, or extra-environmental. We're part of nature — in many ways, we're the most important part.
Industry is great and good and it requires loads of fossil fuels, which, when used the way we use them, are pretty much harmless to nature and the environment. How foolish your comment seems to me!

The UU Church (offshoot of Rockefeller's World Council of Churches) is inside our town meetings pusing for state income taxes here in NH. There is nothing about God in their religion, it's all social justice action…

So to corrupt the faith based initiative with funding is a natural choice as more and more justification comes down in flames. Yet another climate record–the New Zealand temperature record–has been shown to be doctored and must be reconstructed.
It is a shame that this administration is concerning itself with fake environmental concerns than real ones–such as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.

- The solution is to enforce existing laws. Get the S.E.C. off their duffs behind their computers, and make them enforce the laws already in place on Wall St. especially Derivitives and Hedge Fund activities.
- Restore our faith in our Financial Hubs. Maybe add some checks and balances and reports.
