Obama Job Summit: Another Manufacturer Opts Out of U.S.A.

On November 11, David N. Farr, Chairman, CEO and President of Emerson Electric Co., announced at the Baird 2009 Industrial Conference in Chicago that President Obama has succeeded in chasing his multi-billion dollar industry right out of the U.S.A. Why? Onerous regulation, high taxes, and the over $1 trillion Obama debt should be reason enough for any business to consider shutting down U.S. facilities and seeking greener pastures overseas says Farr.
The federal government is “doing everything in [its] manpower [and] capability to destroy U.S. manufacturing,” says David Farr, chairman and CEO of Emerson Electric Co., in a presentation at the Baird 2009 Industrial Conference in Chicago Ill., on Nov. 11. In comments reported by Bloomberg, Farr added that companies will continue adding jobs in China and India because they are “places where people want the products and where the governments welcome you to actually do something. I am not going to hire anybody in the United States. I’m moving. They are doing everything possible to destroy jobs.”
During his slide show on the state of Emerson’s business, Farr noted that the “unprecedented job loss experienced in this recession will result in a much slower U.S. recovery” and the federal government is making matters worse. The slide reports that the job loss this time is by many magnitudes worse than previous recessions. Noted are job losses from several recessions: 1980 with 1 million jobs lost; 1982 with 2.8 million; 1990 with 1.5 million; 2001 with 2.7 million. Finally Farr notes that we’ve seen a whopping 7.3 million jobs lost thus far (and climbing) in this 2008-2009-2010 recession.
And the culprit? Obama’s government interference. Farr’s presentation noted the following:

- Taxes and Regulations (increasing)
- Lack of U.S. $ Support
Emerson reported that sales for the 2009 fiscal year fell to $21 billion, down from $25 billion in 2008. An operating profit of $3.2 billion was earned in 2009.
Another key to Emerson’s decision to continue its overseas development is the rapid growth of its emerging markets. 2009 sales to emerging markets rose at a quick pace reaching $6.7 billion and is projected to reach $12 billion by 2014.
Between 1999 and 2009 “73 percent of growth is from emerging markets!” Farr exclaims. “More than 60 percent of our growth is expected to come from emerging markets over the next five years so Emerson will continue to invest in these key markets.”
Obama’s government with its discouraging interference in the market and the deleterious effects that has had on the national business climate all tends to make foreign shores seem very attractive for American business. At a time when the U.S. is losing almost as many jobs as the last four recessions combined Obama is making the business climate much worse with his policies. But, this shouldn’t surprise anyone. Barack Obama is a good ol’ Illinois pol, after all. And Illinois ranks among the worst business climates in the country.

This is exactly what I have been witnessing amongst many other multinational companies. Unions have killed our labor force, productivity, and individuals drive for building the best products in the world….while emerging markets like BRIC countries, are kicking our ass….so no surpise to me to hear Emerson doing what most companies are doing. Obama is just excelerating this exodus faster with his socialist and unionist agenda. Obama wants public sector to take over more jobs and take them away from private sector. Then have SEIU organize all govt. employees, and alah….keep DEMs in charge forever….the new elitist aristocracy!!!!….but, entreprenuers must move to countries that are pro business….and it's easier today than ever before to relocate, especially, since 95% of the future market potential is outside the USA…..why be where you are not wanted????

Another venerable American company takes the exit while politicians continue to make it unprofitable to conduct business here. Why am I remembering John Kerry's description, during the 2004 campaign, of such companies as "Benedict Arnold corporations?" (Did anyone see the irony of a person with his history making such an accusation?)
I'm probably dating myself, but I recall Emerson radios and TVs made in this country, and during the first few years of my long-ago military service I served as a turret gunner in Navy Patrol aircraft. My turret was designated an "Emerson 250 CE 328." Emerson, of course, was the manufacturer. The 250 signified two .50 caliber machine guns and the CE stood for cylindrical electric. The 328 was a model number.

"For example, gross private fixed investment actually declined for eight quarters beginning in the fourth quarter of 2007. The decline accelerated dramatically in the first quarter of 2009. It is arguable that the giant sucking sound of treasuries was among the contributing factors to this decline along with the general environment of fear, collapse of the credit markets etc. In fact, including the most recent quarter, non-residential private fixed investment has an active decline streak of 15 months."

This is just the tip of the iceberg that the Obama administration is forming. The exodus of business's greater than 500 employees or more will start to happen very quickly because of the way stimulus money is being spent, taxes on business are to high for a profit margin and they don't want to have to take chance of having to accept Federal bail-out monies to stay in business and then become government controlled like in all communist countries. So they leave to greener pastures and security where there is less risk of the above items mentioned that will happen to them. Real simple. The Free Market System will work but the Obama administration will hamper growth until he is defeated in 2012.
This job summit is an absolute joke. You have leftwing parasites that have fleeced Americans for Trillions, poured taxpayer dollars into union coffers, funneled taxpayer dollars to foreign investors through conduits like AIG, used strong-armed tactics to pressure secured creditors at Chrysler to unlawfully give up their legal priority for reimbursement so that the UAW could steal the company with a majority share [frankly obama should be imprisoned for this], the democrat despots have nationalized banks and are threatening to nationalize our healthcare. And now they’re going to try and create jobs in the private sector?
These people are delusional. The first steps they can take in helping the economy is undoing everything Hussein has done thus far.
I’m a small business owner. These political clowns in DC were floating the idea of giving business owners $3,000 tax credit to hire new employees. Wow, with that amount of money I can pay them approx $1.40 an hour with no benefits.

Hussein and his fellow traitors in congress cannot create jobs because it goes against everything they believe in. They loathe the private sector, which funds the public sector and every failed leftwing program, and have passed policies that will require them to punitively tax the wealth creators and increase taxes on everyone else. This is not how you create jobs. Hussein and the democrat controlled congress would need to put the wealth taxpayers created back into their hands. But there's the rub, the federal govt has expanded to such a degree that it needs to confiscate more of our money.
The result? Unemployment will continue to mount and when were at a real unemployment rate of 25% [we're at 18% now] there will be civil unrest and riots. Ironically this may be the best course for America. The politicians will not to what's right, so maybe in the chaos of nationwide riots we'll be able to rid ourselves of the prostitutes and sellouts we have in DC.
Cap & Tax? What do you mean? Some government bureaucrat will be able to turn them off from their cubicle with the click of a mouse. Who knows, they may just set it up so that if they are on for more than 20 minutes at a time that they are automatically turned off for the next 24 hours.
We will not be listened to until we force them to listen. This is clear.
The simple reason that Emerson and other manufacturers move their facilities offshore is that they can pay their foreign employees pennies. No one in this country would work for what these companies pay their foreign employees. All the other "reasons" are just smoke-blowing.
The Fed has been driving manufacturing out of this country for decades. And people only blame the corporations for moving out of the country. They don't realize the impact of regulatory agencies on business, add taxes to that and it's just plain nuts. Then there is hiring people, that's just as nuts.
Business isn't the greedy party, it's the Fed, greedy for our money and the power to control us.
What is unfortunate about this whole situation is that the Obama administration will say that these companies are the ones screwing us by leaving and taking their jobs overseas.

Listening to Rush I just heard him play a clip of the economically illiterate Hussein at the jobs summit babbling about how business owners need to start hiring. Earth to Hussein, many of us business owners have suffered a 50% drop off in business since the democrats took control of congress in 2006. For me the hemorrhaging started in 2007. Many of us are paying ourselves ¼ of what we used to make.
A bloated federal govt and a productive economic climate are mutually exclusive.

While I agree that the Jobs Summit is a joke and I think that Obama and his cronies are deliberately trashing our economy, I think Emerson is using Obama as a convenient excuse to leave the USA. Farr himself stated that 73% of the growth from 1999 to 2009 was from emerging markets with an anticipated 60% of growth from emerging markets within the next five years. I think Emerson is going where the cheap labor is (even excluding US union labor) and going where the growth is. I do like how Farr trashes Obama. Every chance someone of influence can trash Obama is good.

One of the business owners next to me laid off every employee he has. He's now a one man operation. Several of us are combining utilities like trash collection to bring down our costs. I receive a letter 2 days ago stating that my healthcare premiums are going up by nearly 20%. I'll be switching to a cheaper plan in 2010. Under Hussein's abysmal and tyrannical govt healthcare proposals I would not be allowed to change my private plan, I'd be forced into a pitiful public plan.

I used to work for Emerson. One thing about Big Dave is he does not threaten, he does what he says. I know for a fact that the will give marching orders to all division to move anything they possibly can offshore (including Mexico) if they save a buck. How's that for "jobs saved" Mr. Obama? Mrs Pelosi? Mr. Ried? Mr. Durbin? Government spending means high taxes leading to greater overhead for companies leading to fewer jobs. Higher taxes means fewer people buying things like cars, houses and big screens which means less revenue from which these companies can pay their overhead. Simply put. Increasing taxes does not stimulate the economy. Forcing the citizens to buy something they may not need or want, will not stimulate the economy. What will stimulate the economy is if the government gets a grip on itself and stops spending money we have not even earned yet. It's called streamlining and efficiency. Consider what the citizens are paying in and what real benefit they receive from our government and tell us if we are getting our moneys worth. From where I am sitting it certainly doesn't seem so. In fact it seems more like a scam you yourselves would investigate and prosecute were it to have happened in the private sector.
Indeed. Just look how Pelosi is trying to force everyone to buy health insurance just so they can turn around and slap a windfall tax on the insurance providers. It's not about reform. It's not about controlling costs and it's not about providing "affordable" insurance to 49 million uninsured Americans. It's about bilking the citizens of this nation for even more money to pay for the governments inability to reign in it's own spending habits.
Breitbart should make public a list of those members of the Dem Party who are members of the Socialist and Communist Parties of America. In today's economic climate, that would set off alarm bells.
Good for Emerson, "The Truth" is that we are only 300 million people and there are 5.7 billion more out there that want we capitalist have done for America. As business people and entrepreneurs we cannot thrive in communisis. We will not be defeated by the likes of Obama. We have a passion to invent, be with freedom loving people and succeed in free markets. That is why folks like us came to the US many years ago; we will move on and survive in other cultures making their lives better. We are sought after in every corner of the new emerging world. I couldn't agree with you more. The blame falls squarely on the voters. Living on the north side of Chicago, it has been interesting to see how many obama bumper stickers have been quietly disappearing from vehicles. I think it is time to bring back the scarlet letter and have everyone who voted for him have a big red O permanantly stamped on their forehead as an indication that they enabled the destruction of our country and are never allowed to vote again.

There is no doubt that this current administration is not friendly business. I just hope we still have a country to salvage when he gets done skullfu%^ing this economy.
I work for a small employer, a service company, so we can't go anywhere. We're hunkered down and squeezing every dime out we can. I am lucky, I work for principaled people who have no debt and care about their employees. Sure, they make more than me, but hell, they don't sleep anymore with all the worry they have. We can't hire, no one knows what the tax situation is going to be with all the crappy legislation hanging over our head. And business is slow since this attitude of fear permeates the fabric of society (our customers). Everyone is digging in and holding on. This economy is never going to pick up until we get someone in power who knows the way, SMALLER gov't and less TAXES and regulation. I pray every day for the US to survive this attack on our people by the government.
As long as profit is evil , and people think that business is in place to provide jobs for the community, there will be a "giant sucking sound" of jobs leaving the United States.

I don't see how anyone can blame Emerson or other businesses for moving to where liberty and private enterprise are not in immenent jeopardy. Companies that do remain in the US should look into several options to save their businesses from complete government domination:
(1) Change the employment status with all personnel to Independent Contractor agreements; pay them full amounts without withholding payroll taxes (SS & Medicare), federal and state and/or other taxes and, if health and other insurance is part of their package, pay that amount directly to them as "bonus payments" so they can determine individually whether to buy insurance or go self-pay (or take out catastrophic-only plus health-savings-account insurance), and furnish them with annual1099's instead of W2 tax forms. They'll have to pay all of their own tax liabilities, but the Independent Contractor status allows Schedule C reductions so they can be perfectly honest and still come out ahead;
2. Befriend a GOP Committeeman or local official who can check the relevant D&R Sheets, and check the voting habits of any/all potential new hires — then think twice before hiring anyone who voted in this anti-liberty ilk.
