Nidal Hasan: It’s Not Islam, It’s a ‘Military on the Brink’?
by Warner Todd HustonPresident Obama has pleaded for the country not to go “jumping to conclusions” about Major Nidal Hasan’s motives for his murder spree at Fort Hood, Texas. Even Army Chief of Staff General Casey has said that it’s “too soon to be drawing any conclusions about what happened or what his motivations were.”

But it doesn’t seem to early for the Imam that headed the Mosque in Virginia that Hasan and several of the 9/11 terrorists once attended. Anwar al-Awlaki, once the Imam of Dar al-Hijrah mosque in Virginia, has released a statement saying that Nidal Hasan “did the right thing” with his criminal rampage at Fort Hood. Anwar al-Awlaki is thought to be in Yemen having left the U.S. shortly after 9/11.
It is, of course, infuriating that our government refuses to see the obvious. In fact, this incident itself proves that even the Army is so afraid of being charged with political incorrectness that it allowed this jihadist Major to roil in his radical jihadism for some time without being opposed by his superiors.
This attitude of refusing to see the forest for the trees is best exemplified by Andrew Bast of Newsweek who thinks he’s got the real reason behind Major Nidal Hasan’s murderously criminal rampage at Fort Hood last Thursday. Could it be that Hasan was steadily radicalized and steeped in hateful Islamofascism? Could it be a jihad mindset that sent Hasan into that military clinic yelling Allahu Akbar as he shot at anyone that got in his way?
Nope. Ridiculously, it was a “military on the brink,” it was the “stress” an uncaring U.S. military is forcing upon its members that was at fault as far as Bast is concerned. This is his obtuse conclusion in Newsweek’s piece headlined, “Is Fort Hood a Harbinger? Nidal Malik Hasan May Be a Symptom of a Military on the Brink.”
Ominously, Bast begins with his worry that there could be more members of the military about to follow Hasan’s murderous example. Bast absurdly starts his piece with this: “What if Thursday’s atrocious slaughter at Fort Hood only signals that the worst is yet to come?” And why would it be a sing that “the worst is yet to come,” you might wonder? Why else but that all that “stress” the military is putting everyone under is about to cause the whole combined services to explode?
[Hasan's is a] killing spree that may momentarily remind us of a reality that most Americans can readily forget: soldiers and their families are living, and bending, under a harrowing and unrelenting stress that will not let up any time soon. And the U.S. military could well be reaching a breaking point as the president decides to send more troops into Afghanistan.
Once again we see a member of the Old Media entirely dismissing the role that radical Islam played in Hasan’s crimes. In fact, Bast seems to suffer the fantasy that at any minute hoards of “stressed” soldiers will soon be roaming military bases across the world indiscriminately shooting at their fellows. One wonders if Bast thinks that they will all be yelling Allahu Akbar in their “stress” as Hasan did? Likely he doesn’t because he doesn’t think Islam had any role in this incident.
Saying that it is “hard to draw too many conclusions” about Hasan’s rampage, Bast then incongruously goes on to ascribe his actions to “stress” instead of radical Islam and that this stress is hampering our armed forces.
… it comes at a time when the stress of combat has affected so many soldiers individually that it makes it increasingly difficult for the military as a whole to deploy for wars abroad.
Bast then goes on to ascribe motivations to Base Commander Cone’s actions in the aftermath of the attack that make no logical sense at all.
In an abrupt news conference, Lt. Gen. Robert Cone, the top commander at Fort Hood, said in response to the shooting that authorities would “increase the security presence” on the military base. On the surface, it seemed like a logical enough plan. But it makes one wonder how much any kind of lockdown will either get at the root causes of soldier stresses or better prepare them for more battle.
General Cone’s lock down of Fort Hood, Mr. Bast, had nothing at all to do with getting “at the root” of stress. It was a security effort meant to get a handle on that particular incident. Why Bast made the illogical jump from a decision made to quell a crisis to the military’s overall efforts to deal with soldier stress is anyone’s guess.
Naturally, radical Islam couldn’t possibly be at fault here Bast obviously thinks. “Hasan’s perspective is unknown,” the Newsweek hack says. Oh? Yelling “Allahu Akbar” during his criminal actions, his past conversations expressing Islamic jihadism, and his radical Islamic Internet postings aren’t any indication of Hasan’s “perspective,” Mr. Bast? Couldn’t the fact that Hasan attended the same radical mosque that the 9/11 hijackers attended serve as even a tiny hint of his “perspective,” Mr. Bast?
Then Bast goes on to compare soldier suicide rates with Hasan’s crimes as if they are comparable.
Listen, no one denies that concern for the mental health of our soldiers is an important issue nor that stress really is rising in the services today. No one will deny that these issues should be carefully investigated and that solutions to these issues are supremely important to our uniformed personnel. No one dismisses the oft times devastating effects of posttraumatic stress disorder on our troops and no one wants to just sweep these problems under the proverbial rug.
But neither “stress” nor any assumptions of posttraumatic stress disorder have any bearing on what this murderous Muslim did at Fort Hood. It is plain that radical Islam served as Hasan’s chief motivation and for the Old Media to wish this fact away is criminally negligent on its part.
Of course, the real reason that Bast grafted this “stress” issue onto Hasan’s criminal actions is clear by his last paragraph. It is obvious that Bast’s chief aim here is to discredit the military and try to force the nation to accept a loss in Afghanistan as his ilk did at the end of the Vietnam Conflict. His only goal is to undermine the troops and lead to the end of a war of which he obviously disapproves.
The U.S. is drawing down troops in Iraq at a quick clip, but Gen. Stanley McChrystal has requested tens of thousands more to fight in Afghanistan. Though President Obama has made no decision about the way forward, some suggest that as many 80,000 more could be sent in as reinforcements. That would put nearly 150,000 American soldiers in country for at least the foreseeable future, pushing a thumb down on an already stressed-out military. Of course, the vast majority of those under that stress, no matter how brutal, will not pick up a gun and shoot indiscriminately, like Hasan did. But the situation is bad, and getting much worse. From there, it isn’t much of a leap to argue that to further tax our military would do as much as anything to guarantee that the homegrown terror on display today could well repeat itself in the future.
Bast’s real message is that it’s all “bad and getting much worse,” that the U.S. military is too “stressed-out” to be effective. It is plan that he thinks we need to end the efforts in Afghanistan and bring all our troops home now. Sadly, Bast is not above illegitimately using this Hasan incident to push his political ends, either. It’s all just another unprincipled effort by a member of the Old Media to push the anti-war meme.

Allah-u Akbaar!
I feel alot better now. The FBI (yes, the same FBI who feel there isn't enough evidence for them to investigate ACORN) has come out and taken the stand that the Muslim Mass Murder and Massacre at Ft. Hood, was not a terrorist event.
http://article.nationalreview.com/?q=YTI1Yjc2MjBm...
Whew! That is good, we can all sleep better now, knowing that Barney Fife has our backs……….
Maybe our military is so stressed because they are now fighting two enemies; terrorism and political correctness. The question is which is more dangerous?
The enemy within, is always more dangerous
A few obvious problems with Newsweek's hypothesis.
Hasan never deployed. Hasan never saw combat or spent long time away from "home". Hasan wasn't married and had no children. Hasan received promotions despite his obvious inadequacies and psychological profile. Much like a Harvard Affirmative Action student, Hasan was given every advantage because of his religion and ethnicity, his every flaw overlooked for political correctness sake.
The commanders have a big problem on their hands. Now that the soldiers know their commanders don't have their backs, they may become a bit restless. In fact, they may become a military on the brink.
So….this is the "New Media"? Criticizing a MSM article and ranting about your opinion? What a joke. Where is your investigative journalism? Yeah, that's what real media does.
Casey and responsible government leaders are not going to jump onto your political bandwagon by immediately branding this a terrorist attack. Have you bothered to look into what constitutes a terrorist attack? Have you considered the possibility that this guy broke down, like the Virginia Tech student, and might have been taking SSRI anti-depressants, like the Virginia Tech student? Of course not, because you're itching for something to call a terrorist attack so you can further a political agenda and whip up the Muslim hatred.
You right-wing sheeple cheapen the word terrorism and dishonor the fallen with your political/hate-motivated labeling.
In Hasan's case, maybe the PTSD was not Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. In his case, perhaps it was "Pre"; wherein he was simply agitated and stressed over his planned meeting with his 72 hairy legged, stinking Vestal Virgins.
Watch Obama on this issue. He will use it to further his agenda in some way, if we let him. Remember Rahm Emanuel's statement to "never let a crisis go to waste". Big things are coming and it isn't going to be pretty.
You sound bitter and angry. Liberals don't behave like that, no superior being does. Please try to stay in character next time, 'kay Bubbie?
Watch his approval ratings plummet. Every crisis he has handled, big or small, he has made the wrong move. Look how he came out after this massacre and smiled while he gave a shout out . Look how he is telling everyone not to jump to conclusions after he told the country that the police acted stupidly just after admitting he didn't know all the facts. The health care fiasco. The stimulus. The unemployment … Fox News on and on…
This guy is way in over his head…it's like watching the slowest worst train wreck ever!
If you want to say anything of substance, I'll be glad to engage.
The Muslims are doing enough to "whip up the Muslim hatred" on thier own. I think the American population as a whole has been very tolerant to this point. Also, being on anti-depressants doesn't give one a free pass or a license to kill.
At least Newsweek didn't blame this on guns…
So, this akbar MAJOR (an officer that has a fairly easy life in the military), who counseled soldier BEFORE deploying to war and was just PROMOTED…. was under stress????? How about requiring all soldiers and civilians to smoke weed daily to reduce stress! We might actually start believing NObama's rediculous, philosphical religion if that happened.
Is there an email address (or snail mail address) to send comments to our illustrious Army leadership???
Being ex-Army, I'm already labeled an extremist and on terrorist watch lists… I might as well tell them that this guy is the REAL terrorist!
Only those who engage in sweeping generalizations (a fallacy) and stereotyping would hate an entire group of people for the actions of a few, even when most of that group denounces the actions of those few. Most Americans don't think in such simple terms.
SSRI anti-depressants don't give a free pass to kill, but they sure make someone more prone to killing and/or suicide.
Bitter liar JPA. Your 1st post shows you engage like the everyday worthless lefty poster you happen to be. Why don't you give us a few examples of what you call MSM investigative journalism regarding the Ft. Hood Murders? Prove you are not just another snarky leftist liar. Bet you can't!
Effing monster; I hate looking at his picture. As a female, I get an intense creeper vibe from him—hmm, wonder why?
Here's are a couple thoughts that maybe, just maybe, you can wrap your head around, that wherever ears and eyeballs congregate for information and opinions THAT place is the media be it old or new. Your designation of the MSM as the "real" media is an opinion only.
And, just because some person writes an article for the MSM they don't get a pass from scrutiny or criticism. .
Typical Limbaugh dittohead, casting labels in an attempt to make an argument. I don't have to find investigative journalism articles to prove I'm not a liar. Maybe the fact that I support Ron Paul, who is a real conservative, will convince you?
Okay, you make a good point there but what about the generalizations that the Muslim world makes about all other religions but thier own?
The truth is Bast knows this was a terrorist act. The Lamestream media is just covering for -Zero again. It does not matter to them that good people died. They are not there kind of good people. If they admit this is a terrorist act they admit it happened while -Zero was president. And after Cheney said people will die because of -Zero's policies. The scum in the media have no feelings at all fir the people that dies, All they care about is pushing there agenda. They make me so pissed I can't even say here what I would like to see happen the most of them. Mat they rot in hell when they die.
Hmm.
I knew if I looked hard enough at you, I'd find something positive. Ron Paul is positive.
and smiled while he gave a shout out
He has no feelings. He is a sociopath. He is a danger to this countries freedoms we have left. He is a well groomed plant by Soros and they other Marxists and he made it in to office.
Pre Post Traumatic Stress Disorder,a new Obama generated politically correct phrase to steer the conversation away from what this mass murder was and that's terrorism. While there is no doubt that getting ready to deploy to a war zone is extremely stressfull this terrorist Hasan was going as a psychiatrist to give comfort to real American warriors who actually carry guns and take the fight to the enemy.
There is absolutly no doubt this guy Hasan is a cowardly muslim terrorist who ambushed 43 Americans and murdering 13 of our countryman, most of them military.General Casey had better take a hard look in the mirror and decide who and what he's supposed to be fighting for.Making excuses for Islamist terrorists is not it.
I've seen to many times the hatred Barak Obama has for this country. Now that political correctness has degenerated to mass murder, military leadership better get it's priorities straight and no more political excuses.
Kelly,
I am curious, so I will ask this question. I have always believed in womens intuition, in a woman getting a "feeling", a "vibe". What do women really think of him, and why?
I don't know what generalizations you are talking about that the "the Muslim world" makes. Aren't they people too, and won't they have views as varied as any other group of people?
I've talked to a Muslim about the Koran, he showed me passages, and pointed out the Islam sees Jesus Christ and Buddha on the same level as Mohammed. All three were prophets. And "infidels" refers to those without any religion, not simply non-Muslims. It's the small majority of militant radicals or terrorists that bastardize Islam to suit their agenda, just as people do in other religions.
Thanks for the rational discussion.
"Where is your investigative journalism? Yeah, that's what real media does."
It has been DECADES since the MSM did any investigative reporting.
Well, if that place is just reporting the talking points of the day and spouting opinions, then I don't consider it as news–regardless of its political orientation. I did not designate the MSM as real media. For example, I definitely don't consider any of the three cable channels (CNN, Fox, MSNBC) as real media. They're 24 hour infotainment channels.
If I saw his picture without knowing what he did, he'd look a bit pervy to me. Certainly not a guy I'd give a second thought about. I really can't pinpoint what exactly it is that gives off those vibes, just that I can pick up on them. But because my opinion of him is skewed by the fact he is a raging jihadist murderer, all I get when I look at him is "Ew, ew ew, oh God, take it away!"
Thanks Kelly.
As a woman, what feeling do you get when seeing Obama?
Of course, it wasn't really Hasan's fault.
It's America's fault .
Look into the eyes of the:
AMERICAN PSYCHO
http://naturalfake.wordpress.com/2009/11/10/ameri...
Dirka Dirka Dirka muhamed jahad! The press and the government are in denial. PC mind-control has utterly blinded and muted rational thought. We have a clear case of a terrorist act by a terrorist, by definition!
But the press + are making parallels to other religions, gun control, Army stress, …. ANYTHING but what it is! Alice in wonderland… .perfect to go along with our current POTUS and Congress.
What a pile of manure. I am fed up with this glass-half-empty media that constantly seeks to blame everything bad in the world on an American insitution whether it's civilian or military. If we have a military on the brink, where's the mass murders on, and off base, to justify these conclusions. I'll stack ANY crime rate on ANY base in ANY city against the civilian rates in Chicago, D.C., New York, Los Angeles, Atlanta, etc. Where's the hand-wringing type coverage of the murder rates in these liberal wastelands? Chicago alone has had more murders this year than soldiers lost in combat in Afghanistan, and that's just one city.
Hasan wasn't stressed because he was an American soldier. He was stressed because he couldn't reconcile his service to this country with his duty to Islam. When a person finds he has to make the ultimate decision between his God and his country, guess who loses. He threw his lot with the Jihadists and turned traitor to his country. He wasn't just a terrorist, he was the worst kind of terrorist. The betrayor. How many more do we have in our midst?
Everybody ought to read this article from Ed Koch.
http://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2009/11...
At least Hizzoner has the guts to call a spade a spade.
It's just a matter of time before the leftist restrict all the military/police to one bullet, which they must keep in their pockets unless needed.
People think he's this very attractive man; I don't really see it. Not my cup of tea. Admittedly, he does have a good smile, though. If I put aside the fact that I vehemently disagree with just about everything he says and is grossly unqualified to be president, he comes off (usually) as a likeable man—and a family man, which is huge for a lot of women. If it wasn't for that, there wouldn't be a single thing about him I liked. I don't get pervy/creeper/indecent vibes from him.
The Koran is literally interpreted hence all of the repulsive bad habits of Mohammed's are permissions and live on centuries later like polygamy, jihad towards infidels, women as chattel, stonings of adulterers, honor killings, etc. Islam is incompatible with secular democracies by its own dogmas. Look around the "Muslim world", it's stuck economically, socially and politically in the 7th century.
Cherry picking a few ecumenical passages from the Koran is meaningless against the reality of the violence and intolerance that Islam at its unreformed core inflicts on the world. You are either very naive or disingenuous.
JPA SPOUTED : "casting labels in an attempt to make an argument" PREFACED BY "Typical Limbaugh dittohead"
Have you ever considered looking up the word "Hypocrit"?
His teleprompters have more warmth than he does.
It was a couple months ago maybe…when I read a Peggy Noonan column: Obama is a Cold Fish…I think she was writing about his cool demeanor at the Kennedy Funeral…and I hear other people saying it more and more.
Maybe you are right…sociopaths can fool people too.
Where did I try to make an argument to WestWright?
I agree the Koran has some bad parts, just as the Bible does. You can find plenty of intolerance in interpretations of all religions. Look far enough in the past and you will find plenty of violence emanating from various religions, including Christianity.
I don't think your characterization of the Muslim world being "stuck" economically, socially and politically is accurate. There are plenty of Muslim countries with vibrant economies and cultures. And the poor conditions of some countries have more factors and simply religion.
You bring up a good point that everyone else is ignoring that is trying to defend him. I have not heard the media say (surprise) that this guy was NOT going into Combat, he was probably not even going to be in a proper Combat zone, unless you consider the air conditioned offices he would be working in "Stressful"
Maybe he was worried that he coudlnt get his hash browns the way he liked them at his new post?
2nd Hand PTSD is now the new WTF diagnosis for every coward and traitor in america, something else we have Major Nidal "Muderous Traitor" Hasan to thank for.
I urge eveybody to go to http://www.strata-sphere.com; AJ has connected pretty much all the dots, and it looks like Holder shut down investigation of the jihadi murderer.
his ugly mug cries out…"how come nobody likes me"
Point taken again. It is easy for Americans to generalize Muslims because of the lack of condemnation of these acts by the Muslim leaders (at least it is not being covered by our so called media outlets). All we see and hear about are the radical leaders praising these attacks, burning of the American flag while thousands chant "death to America" and crazy people running into a building screaming Allah-u Akbaar before opening fire. I agree that while most Muslims are not terrorists, most terrorists are Muslim.
I agree. He did, in fact, break down. He struggled with his loyalty to his country vs. his duty to his God and religion. That wasn't our fault or the fault of the military. It was a personal choice.
Our fault was allowing his obsession with his religion to lead him to this act by ignoring the signs. We were afraid to call him on it for fear of being labeled bigot or racist.
His actions defined his label of terrorist. It was the action of a man who had sought religious advice from known terrorist organizations and terrorist sympythizers. A Major in the military is well aware of who these people are and what is considered appropriate contact. Had he wished to do "research" with these types, the proper permissions should have been sought and safeguards enacted.
There is a religious and political aspect of this act. He sought to alter the U.S. position or enact retribution on the U.S. for engaging in a "war on Islam", as he called it. That day, he went over to the enemy's camp.
tip of the iceberg, folks- tip of the iceberg…
Government Intel souces know about the Islamic fifth column in not only the military but civilian authority as well.
To say it's 'radioactive' is an understatement. The decision has been made- this is NOT a war against Islam.
Except for when it is…
Expect more of this, unfortunately.
He never even mentions the "terror" in the Ft. Hood speech … Not one word… I'm not syaing muslim … but how about at least a word of "terror"
Come on man …..
We are being taken over from the inside … we really are …..
I appreciate the well-thought reasoning. But, does the action of one man (a lone wolf) who happened to be Muslim and had emailed a radical imam constitute terrorism? What if a Christian thought that a group of people were all sinners and needed to die, and had emailed another Christian radical, and commenced to kill a bunch of people? Would that be terrorism?
You mean like Eric Rudolph and the Army of God?
"it isn’t much of a leap to argue that to further tax our military would do as much as anything to guarantee that the homegrown terror on display today could well repeat itself in the future."
This man has obviously never been in the military. Who does he think we are? The military is made up of men and women who are willing to risk their lives to save their Battle Buddy. No amount of stress would make an honorable member of the military do what this coward did. The fact that the gunman never saw battle is alone enough to prove that his actions had nothing to do with an overly taxed military. He was a coward who pledged a commitment to the US Army when all he really wanted was a free education and a regular paycheck.
on a side note – have ya heard Obama is going to Japan (anniversary of the bombing) to talk about bombing hiroshima … I guess he will apoligize for America again there .. weird he couldn't make to Germany for the berlin wall… that Freeed a nation !!!!
Strange….
I'm with you I say pull back and let these countries that hate us defend themselves… you want to talk about child murders / rape of women…. beheading… hangings….
Pull back and watch….. Then Chris Matthews will blame the US for that too!!!!
The military has been fighting the left and press corp since Viet Nam…. and really, a good case can be made that they've been fighting the left within ALWAYS.. but the left used to raise the flag and join in when the fighting started and mostly shut the hell up till the fighting was over.
That changed in the last 50 years as the left/press have divorced themselves from the country and decided that they'll only rally around the flag and country when they call the shots. There is no good for the military except for conscription and pork. No fighting and absolutely no winning!
Political correctness has come full circle. This mess was started by liberals but fully embraced by Rino's.And the media gave it traction.
Don't insult us. Don't insult the hundreds of thousands of men and women and their families who sacrifice so much for this great country. Don't insult people under "stressful stituations". Call it like it is – TERRORISM. Plain and simple.
Nailed it right on the head! Good comment!
Obama and his cabals were blinded with misguided policy that they even invited Hasan to be part of Homeland Security Task force briefing. Napolitano has dropped the ball on this one. She should resign.
maybe if we let all the amy personel at Ft Hood carry guns they could shoot back and stop this nonsense before so many are injured
What part of screaming "Allahu Akbar!" as he opened fire don't you understand?
Wotta maroon. Grasping at any straw to avoid acknowledging the patently obvious.
Yep- leave it to Newsweak to invent a way to Blame Bush.
And then dishonestly use stats out of context (veteran suicides are lower per capita than the general population).
I look forward to the day that this traitors asshole goes to Hell.
Hate to inform you asson Nidal jihaddi, but one day your scumbag ideology is going to do something that will anger americans so badly we will ge tthe willpower to do whats necessary and wipe Islam off the face of the earth.
dont forget who Newsweeks editor is. Evan Thomas is the grandson of Norman Thomas, the co-founder of American Commies living undercover(ACLU). Evan represents the same ideology that Asson Jihaddi does.
I live in Arizona and my boss and department dealt more than once with Napolitano when she was governor here. Talk about someone who has a lifetime subcription to being stuck on stupid.
when i look at that pic, its the fake smile that sets my "back away slowly" alarm…its fake, almost like he doesn't know how to smile. some people get uncomfortable in posed pics, do the weird smile, but that smile…no, its like he literally doesn't know how.
*shrugs* just another woman's opinion
oops- forgot to add..on obama- as for his pictures, all i think is…plastic/actor/manikin. bland. indifferent.
if it weren't for the puppet masters, he'd be rather impotent.

It is the NEW Big lie…
If they (the MSM and their PC ilk) say it often enough, soon it will become accepted as truth amongst their followers (the average Libtard).
Where has our military priorities gone? I know a young soldier that did not make a special forces team because he fell short by 3 push ups in a 3 minute time frame after weeks of training. And then the military turns it's back on obvious conflicts of interests in a soldier abeiting with the enemy. The blood of the soldiers killed are on the hands of our military command that turned a deaf ear and a blind eye to this blatant disrespect for America. The military must be held accountable for not weeding soldiers like this out and quickly.
A sad heart goes to those who died or were injured due to this indefensible act of not plucking Hasan from the ranks of our military.
It is astounding……. the mental gymnastics that the lamestream media will perform to shape the story the way they want. You would have to be a mental midget to call this anything other than a terrorist attack. Why are they so scared sh*tless to call a spade a spade? Can anyone really be that obtuse? This kind of bull will keep happening unless WE THE PEOPLE refuse to be herded like sheep.Move along, nothing to see here….They must really think we are as dumb as a box of rocks. It is really insulting to the American people.
Islam is as Islam does.
I have no doubt you are right Mike, "it isn't going to be pretty."
We may know we're looking at a mask when we see Obama, it's going to be a shock to a lot of people when that mask finally falls away.
What scares me is wondering if the military will be used to force the masses into the socialism that is starting to ruin our country?? Will they follow their 'Commander in Chief's' orders if he tells them to shut us up??
The 'chill' I get doesn't run up my leg…it runs up my spine! I am so sick of seeing his face and hearing his voice, he has been overexposed for way too long!
Nope.
No "tragedy" at Fort Hood! Just bloody, murderous rampage resulting in a SLAUGHTER of American troops!

TREASON
n. the crime of betraying one's country, defined in Article III, section 3 of the U.S. Constitution: "Treason against the United States shall consist only in levying war against them, or in adhering to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort." Treason requires overt acts and includes the giving of government security secrets to other countries, even if friendly, when the information could harm American security. Treason can include revealing to an antagonistic country secrets such as the design of a bomber being built by a private company for the Defense Department. Treason may include "espionage" (spying for a foreign power or doing damage to the operation of the government and its agencies, particularly those involved in security) but is separate and worse than "sedition," which involves a conspiracy to upset the operation of the government.
