What Ever Happened to All Those Gas ‘Price-Gouging’ Investigations by Democrats?
by Wynton HallWith gas prices now almost double what they were on the first day of President Barack Obama’s presidency, we’re left to wonder: what ever happened to all those “price gouging” investigations Democrats launched four years ago to relieve pain at the pump?
In 2006, Rep. Nancy Pelosi promised that Democrats would enact plans to bring down the price of gas. But as this GOP ad makes clear, that didn’t happen.
Then, with the presidential election heating up in May 2007, Rep. Nancy Pelosi rolled out the tried and true “blame Bush” tactic and said that high gas prices were the result of “the Bush Administration’s failure to enact a comprehensive energy strategy.” Furthermore, Rep. Pelosi said that the Democratic Congress would “take America in a new direction” and “make up for years of inaction” by Republicans. The San Francisco Congresswoman went on to tout the actions taken by the Democratic Congress within the first 100 hours of their taking power.
The day Rep. Pelosi made those comments, the national average price for a gallon of gas was $3.07. Today, in 2012, it’s $3.39 a gallon.
Rep. Pelosi, however, was not alone in promising to right the wrongs of the “two oil men in the Oval Office.” Then-candidate Barack Obama promised that, if he were elected president, gas prices would plunge because he would impose a “windfall profits tax” on any oil producer who sold oil above $80 a barrel. But no sooner did he win the presidency than did Mr. Obama ditch the proposal altogether, even going so far as to remove mention of it from his Transition Team’s website.
Of course, anyone who was paying careful attention in 2008 to then-candidate Barack Obama should hardly be surprised that energy prices have skyrocketed on his watch. After all, during the last presidential election, Mr. Obama admitted that he was perfectly aware that his own energy policies would result in skyrocketing prices–and that he was fine with that.
Indeed, Mr. Obama flatly stated that he preferred that gas prices rise–albeit “gradually”–in order to reduce American reliance on oil.
But the Democratic sound and fury over removing our pain at the pump signified nothing. With just 10 months until the 2012 presidential election, gas prices are almost twice what they were when that oil-loving meany George Bush left office.
Why? Because oil prices hinge on basic supply and demand, not a price-fixing conspiracy by George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, and the owner of your local gas station, as many Democrats would have voters believe. To be sure, OPEC has an enormous influence on the price of a barrel of oil. But Energy Forum Director Amy Myers Jaffe of the Baker Institute for Public Policy at Rice University says that so-called price-gouging investigations are just a political shell game. “That’s just camouflage,” Ms. Jaffe told CNN. “That’s just ‘I want to pretend I’m doing something even, though I’m doing nothing.’”
With petroleum analysts now predicting that the price of a gallon of gas may well reach $4 a gallon by summer, Mr. Obama’s reelection hopes may rest on whether he can make manifest the promises he made four years ago to relieve America’s pain at the pump. If so, he better hurry. Summer gas prices will soon be here–and will further underscore Mr. Obama’s failure to make good on yet another campaign promise.

I absolutely LOVE high gas prices. Every quarter per gallon gas goes up gets me to work 5 minutes quicker in the morning.
The Democrat investigations are on hold. They will be launched after November 2012.
LET MY PEOPLE DRILL!!!!!
"what ever happened to all those “price gouging” investigations Democrats launched four years ago to relieve pain at the pump?"
The movie ended. The political theater has come out with a new one,
It is called " EAT THE RICH" the economic inequality docudrama. It is based on the fallacious argument that government needs to equalize an equal playing field, and will later tell us we need more government to fix the problem of them trying to make things equal.
Bend over America here it comes…. again.
Vaseline please…………
"Yes, we can"…..pay $5 a gallon.
Obama and Soros want high gas prices. The Arab Spring is running out of money and Soros does not want to pay for it himself. No, they will do anything they can to make sure oil barrel prices rise.
Treason and planning a one world government is such hard work you know…
Our new Emperor needs more time to study the KeystoneXL pipe line……
Obama's campaign promise. A windmill on every hood.
Oh the irony of Vaseline being a petroleum product……..
Let me hear you say that when you are peddling a Schwinn. The road will be jammed with them soon.
…Wrist watch, Crisco….
Drill baby, drill.
But only in the vulgar sense of the phrase.
Americans have been drilled to the point they are sore.
First thing they can do to help lower fuel prices is to stop levying all their taxes on it. There's easily almost an entire dollar (not like a U.S. dollar is worth anything anymore) in taxes levied by the government on each gallon of gas.
Diesel fuel can easily go down to $3 (just like "off-road diesel") if the taxes per gallon were eliminated. AND the only the reason why "off-road diesel" is "illegal" to use on-road is because the government didn't get to tax you on it.
Now that's the kind of drilling Obama can get his head into.
This is all by design by the progressives of the DNC with a couple of RINO's mixed in for good measure. The fundamental change referenced by Obama is in full swing and sadly we have not even seen the worst of it. Believe me, they have a plan and it's gonna be kicking in full swing sometime this summer.
Like all other political shows by politicians, it gets pushed under the rug because most Americans have the attention span of a gnat……..
I watched all the video clips on this article.
The author put together a good montage and representative example of the problem.
This topic, and no article can be complete without this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=niJAkR_6tKQ . I just happened to catch this live on TV as it happened back in 2008, and the sound of my jaw hitting the floor is still echoing through the hills. It was unbelievable.
Yes, this video has gotten some attention, but not the attention it deserves. it shows for a FACT the mindset of of the Congressional Black Caucus, the Progressive Congressional Caucus, and the entire stanch that the Progressive Democrats and the DNC have toward free enterprise and Capitalism in general.
Frankly, they should all be tried for treason, and if found guilty, they should be hung.
When will the people of this country see that oil purchase from the Muslim nations is simply a bowing to and paying of the Dhimmi tax?
Well, I suppose they would have to open their eyes and ears to understand what that is in the first place, but still.
Here is what we require.
Candidates for every governmental seat, every elected position, must first stand firm on the unalienable promise (complete with a binding contract to accept impeachment and removal for failure to hold up that promise) to eliminate ALL Executive orders, legislation and other barriers to delivering each and every drop of oil that this nation can muster. Thus purchasing ONLY that black gold from abroad that our UNLIMITED production cannot meet. Even then, limiting purchase to ONLY countries friendly to Freedom and these united States AND her people.
The number one responsibility of all government operators is the protection and defense of Liberty. When they stand against the Freedom to develop resources within this country, when they stand idle as that Liberty is assaulted, they are derelict in their duty and should be removed from that position – and they certainly shouldn't be sent to those positions in the first place, much less back to them.
There it is again.
Toss Them All Out.
Every. Last. One. Of. Them.
If you thought the Civil War was expensive and destructive,
you ain't seem nothing, until you see the effects of Obama's continuing War on Prosperity..
The pansy left discovered that yes indeed, there was gouging going on. So the left was satisfied and dropped it. The want gouging and high prices – - They just wanted to be sure that the gouging was going on.
Obammy promised America that energy prices would "necessarily skyrocket" under his dictatorship. And they are.
Gouging, to the Obammy regime, is good.
Banana hands.
And we divert billions into the great green scam, instead of developing our own resources.
Thanks Barry, I lay this at your feet.
“energy prices would necessarily skyrocket…” From the mouth of Barry, all one needs to know, just listen and observe.
It’s getting time to fix the mistake of ’08!
Aint it ironic… the great Manhattan Transfer…. all the way to Brasil.

So, who is really price gouging?
Matthew 7:16-20
16“You will know them by their fruits. Grapes are not gathered from thorn bushes nor figs from thistles, are they? 17“So every good tree bears good fruit, but the bad tree bears bad fruit. 18“A good tree cannot produce bad fruit, nor can a bad tree produce good fruit. 19“Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20“So then, you will know them by their fruits.
Consequently, the interpretation is: Ye shall know them by their words……….
Democrats have proven themselves unworthy of running this Country or holding positions of power at any level of Government. They need to be voted out of existence.
Now Obama is say we need to drill in the Gulf, and in the last week he found out we are the Saudi of Natural Gas. Did Boone Pickens give him a campaign contribution, or is he just trying to get elected again?
If they were worried about gas prices, was it a good idea to allow Iran to put mines in the Hormuz Strait? We pulled out of our military exercise with Israel, so we wouldn't provoke Iran. Sure just let Iran threaten our oil suppliers, they don't mean any harm. This was just another dereliction of duty from our president that we will all pay the price for. This is yet another impeachable offense that will be ignored by the spinless GOP leadership.
This country not being energy self sufficient is a national disgrace. We have proven reserves to last for the forseeable future and well beyond. Forcing our citizens to purchase from foriegn sources is unacceptable.
Affordable energy is the driver of a strong economy. It is what gives us a leg up on China.
Drill and refine, here and now.
Actually, gnats are pretty persistent little buggers. Americans just want to be "entertained" by something new every week. Bread and circuses, my friend.
…. And then the hood winked.
Waters most certianly meant what she said the first time. eh….er..ahh…er..yup, them Freudian slips sure are a B**ch and so is she.
"I watched all the video clips on this article."
You have a strong constitution, my friend. I had to draw the line at the 3 minute pelosi video. That would have just ruined my Sunday morning.
I saw that Waters remark live as well. Now can you imagine if the msm went after all the "progressives" the same way they've attacked Cain or Newt or Perry? These people wouldn't just be voted out of office, they WOULD be tried for treason.
The other night Obama flapped his ears and blather spewed out of his mouth. When he says all forms of energy production is on the table in Obama's brain he's right.Put America's legitimate energy sector on the table and put an ax to it.If you want to see what Obama's done to the energy sector in this country look at what Obama's EPA,Dept.of Energy and the Interior Dept's new regulations in just the last three years have done to stymy exploration and production of America's energy resources.
Obama and the Democrats in congress are the reason that all energy prices are skyrocketing.Barak Obama and the Democrats in congress are the worst enemy this country ever had bar none.
Not many seem to realize that one of the main reasons that politicians are opposing the drilling of our own energy resources by the oil companies is that the longer it remains in the ground the more value it has… both politically and financially.
When the government is finally able to "nationalize" the oil companies (the resources already are) the drilling will start… and will be the next step in a long line of Pigford Reparations. http://floridaindependent.com/66284/obama-offshor...
And the democrat trolls think they have a perpetual motion machine. It works best when there is a strong headwind. hmm – Lets add some drama and a little action and investors will fight to buy shares in this idea. (just a little sarcasm)
Oh those pesky hypocritical liberals. Always talking out of both sides of there commie mouths.
Good post.
"The worst form of inequality is to try to make unequal things equal." Aristotle
Well, you know, we gotta cut those CO2 emissions to combat "global warming." Oh, but about that "warming," seems it stopped some 15 years ago now, with new solar minimums and the oceans flipping into a cooling cycle, we're actually moving into a new mini-Ice Age.

Better fire up those SUVs. It's gonna be a long, cold winter.
Which will follow Saul Alinsky's playbook by the numbers – again.
Every time the gas prices rise your grocery bag gets a little smaller .Love that? Love the fact that you may have to stay at work a little longer to pay for all(most) the things that require fuel to get to you? I hope you were being sarcastic.
Obama's energy policy and indeed his entire economic policy are based on the hoax of global warming. He has poured $10's if not hundreds of billions of dollars into something called the "green economy" which does not exist. In his State of the Union he says he wants to double down on the hoax.
Questions we should be asking:
Where did the stimulus money really go? There is a $1 trillion missing.
Where did the $7 trillion the Federal Reserve stole from the treasury go?
Our country is being looted by these criminal politicians and we are fighting about Newt's ex-wife and Romney's investments.
This is all chump change compared to the money that has been stolen by the Obama regime.
For now, anybody but Obama!
My thought exactly, when the Dem's get their guys in the CEO(see GM/Chrysler) positions at the oil companies they will make their move.We all see what happened in Venezuela when Hugo took over the oil companies, production down 50%.
You know, I never thought I'd actually want $5 gallon gas, but hey, if that's what it takes to get rid of El Presidente, I'll take one for the team!
What’s up Cowboy? Yeah, I’ve run into several Barry voters from ’08 who are, thankfully, 180 degrees out of phase with Barry. They are shocked, and alarmed where we find ourselves as a country. All one simply had to do, was listen. However, with the negligence of the press, the fair weather voter only heard of his brilliance, messianic prose, his reasonableness, when in fact he’s a doctrinaire leftist who admires the writings of Mao. In my opinion everything that we are experiencing now as a country is by design, and without exception the policies have been in the can for forty years, ready for roll out when the time was right, Barry’s ascension.
He only sees those when he bows.
Ummmm…. never mind.
Redistribute wealth to his people, and backers!
They were far too busy talking with their brokers and buying IPO's and trading on confidential insider information to be bothered to address the little things that matter to us.
Even more troublesome is that the price of hamburger meat has gone up 24% since Obama took office and the price of bacon has gone up 22% in the same time. BACON!! If that's not an impeachable offense, what is?
Anyone with half a brain new that already. That let's out the PROGRESSIVE SOCIALIST DEMOCRATS.
Even those, especially those, with an (R) behind their names…….
How can Bush,…..
still manage to do this….???????
Answer: They were quelled by campaign contributions…..what do you think happened to them…..
10 Things You Need to Know About High Gas Prices and Obama’s Oil Policy Rory CooperFebruary 23, 2011 at 6:00 pm http://blog.heritage.org/2011/02/23/10-things-you...
My guess is that the Obammy Admin will try to blackmail the oil industry by cutting subsidies unless the oil industry produces some magical gas price fairy to lower gas prices.
I'll guarantee they don't want $5 gas before Nov 2012, that would ensure ANY Republican would beat them.
If you want better gas prices, quit electing democrats and republicans, its that simple. The ONLY reason for high gas prices, is Goldman Sachs and Jp Morgan trading oil 20-50 times before we get a chance to buy it.
Check out the rolling stone article the great america bubble machine.
If they believe they will lose the election, they will drive up the price of oil to fund the Soros movement globally. Soros does not want to pay for this himself.
Scorched earth, OWS riots and chaos, it is all a part of their plan. Gas prices won't matter if there is no election.
That is just the plain truth.
Exactly. The propping up of oil prices by Obama Administration policies is simply a form of indirect Jizya.
Prices double under a democrat president in less than 1 year: GOOD.
Prices double under a republican president over 8 years: BAD.
We all know the playbook by now.
If I'd have known that Barack Obama was a rich west Texas oilman, I'd have voted for that beer guy from Arizona..
Nah, they'll blame the Republicans.
Right now the liberal media is trying to keep us focused on their efforts to destroy the GOP presidential candidates and keep crowing how Obama will beat anyone in that field. But gas prices are the ticking time bomb that they don't want to mention. If gas prices do go to over 4 dollars the liberal media despite all it's efforts won't keep the American people from blaming the leftist in the White House. If that isn't enough Obama's own response will only dig the hole deeper, he'll refuse to help expand production by green lighting more refineries or pipelines or drilling. The liberals will be put into corner by their own dogma.
If Romney is the nominee, gas would be TEN dollars a gallon and O would have a double digit win.
THEN GET MICHELLE BACH IN THE RACE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
"To be sure, OPEC has an enormous influence on the price of a barrel of oil. But Energy Forum Director Amy Myers Jaffe of the Baker Institute for Public Policy at Rice University says that so-called price-gouging investigations are just a political shell game."
It's what tinpot dictators do. And that's exactly what Obama is hoping to become.
Idiot.
The sad part is the quicker you get to work is offset by the extra $4000.00 you could have used for your family.
Hopefully you are wrong? Not so much that a Democrat president is still in office but it would indicate the Democrats regained control of the House.
Classic..
I was, we've told the cat to stay off the stove for the last three years and the damn thing just refuses to listen. I know it's cold and heartless, but it's time for some paws to get singed.
With all of his electric car companies going bust, maybe Obama will subsidize pedal cars in his second term. Hell, no one's buying the Volt so Government Motors has an assembly line open.
I know, every now and then I'm overcome by outrage and just want to see who these destructive policies will make scream uncle first.
Isn't it illegal for gas stations to "advertise" how much tax per gallon?
/just askin'
SJ:
If we take the Senate like I believe and retain the House where will the investigation come from? Of course in 2013 with more drilling being allowed and the pipeline finally being improved the price will come down so there will be no need for the investigations.

Agreed . . . IF we take the Senate. I hope you are correct. The only thing better would be 60–then we could seriously begin to undo the harm that has been done.
Newt supports leftist causes…
In 2008, Gingrich joined with Nancy Pelosi in ad for government “leadership” vis-à-vis “climate change.” This dynamic duo “demanded” of the country’s “leaders” that they do something immediately to address this crisis. The ad, it is worth noting, was sponsored by the Alliance for Climate Protection — an organization founded by none other than Al Gore. Pelosi exploited this appearance with Gingrich to push for “Cap and Trade.” Conveniently, Gingrich now refers to this as among the biggest mistakes of his career.
—
On May 15 of this year, during an interview on Meet the Press, Gingrich unabashedly reiterated his long held belief that “all of us have a responsibility to pay — to help pay for health care.” We could fulfill this collective “responsibility,” he said, by way of either an individual mandate to purchase health insurance — precisely that feature of “ObamaCare” that renders it anathema to the vast majority of Americans — or a requirement to post a bond that would insure health coverage — which doesn’t differ from the mandate in any morally meaningful way.
http://thenewamerican.com/opinion/jack-kerwick/98...
Ever the environmentalist, Gingrich also supports a “flex fuel” mandate for all automobiles sold in the United States. Ostensibly, such a course of action would lower fuel prices while improving the environment. For Gingrich to take this position, though, belies his reputation as a man of good economic sense. As the Cato Institute’s Jerry Taylor says, “Congress can no more guarantee that fuel prices will go down from now until the end of time than it can guarantee a robust sex life for fat, balding, middle-aged men.” If Congress enacted this mandate into law, it would prove that it “is not a serious legislative body.”
Everyone knows that high gas prices, like war, are a problem only during Republican administrations. Also, The San Francisco Congresswoman can work my joint.
Did you know NONE of the comments you've posted make any sense? Apparently, you're not only able to afford gas, and groceries, but also meth.
It is and the reason for that is that both the state and federal government dont want us normal people to know how much of the sky high prices that we pay per gallon are taxes. That would ruin the oil companies are evil image that Democrats and liberal Republicans keep pushing
