It’s the Math, Stupid!: Seven Devastating Facts About 2012
by Wynton HallAs we enter 2012, the presidential candidates would do well to wrap their minds and messages around these seven mathematical facts:
- Every day, the U.S. government takes in $6 billion and spends $10 billion. This means that every day the federal government spends $4 billion more dollars than it has.
- The real unemployment rate is a jaw-dropping 11 percent.
- Every fifth man you pass on your way to work is now out of work.
- College graduates are now 34% less likely to find a job under Obama than they were under President George W. Bush.
- Every seventh person you pass on the sidewalk now relies on food stamps.
- The ravages of the Obama economy now mean that more Americans live under the federal poverty line than at any time in U.S. history since records have been kept.
- Under President Barack Obama, every fifth child in America now lives in poverty.
These are not partisan jabs, manufactured statistics, or ideological swipes. These are mathematical facts. And the presidential candidate who can most clearly and credibly articulate them—and their concomitant solutions—is bound to win.
Why? Because these facts point toward the solutions America must implement to avert the kinds of economic and social upheaval seen in Europe and elsewhere.
Start with mathematical fact number one—deficit spending. No person, family, business, or nation can spend more than it takes in and remain sustainable; it defies the simple laws of math and reason. And yet even as Washington hemorrhages $4 billion more than it has each day, citizens have watched as the farce that is “Super Committee” has proven it cannot even shave $1.2 trillion from America’s $15 trillion debt.
The time for carping over the appropriate size of government is over. The laws of math have settled the argument: either we return to limited government or we face economic collapse. Those are the choices. Period. As Robert Samuelson noted yesterday, “We are shifting from ‘give away politics’ to ‘take away politics.’”
Mathematical facts two and three—11% real unemployment and 20% male unemployment rate—focus the nation on the priorities of spurring economic growth, eliminating Obamacare, and adapting to the realities of the digital economy. Why aren’t employers hiring? As a September 2011 report by UBS explained, “arguably the biggest impediment to hiring (particularly hiring of less skilled workers) is healthcare reform.” And lest one forget, Obamacare hasn’t even gone into full effect and won’t until 2014. Even still, under Mr. Obama, the average family’s health insurance premiums have risen $2,393.
As for the male unemployment rate, the problem is threefold. First, male graduation rates continue to lag behind those of women. Second, American manufacturing, which used to be a primary source of male employment, is dying a quick death. Third, incarceration rates of males continue to skyrocket. In 1982, there were 500,000 people in prison (the majority of them males). Today, that figure stands at a towering 2.5 million. And that is to speak nothing of those whose crimes do not warrant jail time but will nonetheless permanently appear on their record when applying for a job.
Once former inmates and those with arrest records attempt to enter the workforce, they will be slapped by the new reality of the digital economy: no longer can people with blights on their record fudge or fib on job applications; employers can and do run national background checks for a few dollars and the click of a mouse.
What this means is that the old days when a kid could mess up and rebound are rapidly evaporating as competition among job applicants becomes fiercer by the minute. Couple this with fact number four—a drop in college graduate employment from 90% under Mr. Bush to 56% under Mr. Obama—and the fierce competition of a digital age comes into sharp relief.
Facts five, six, and seven—1 in 7 Americans on food stamps, 46 million under the poverty line, and historic childhood poverty rates—speak to the failures of Mr. Obama’s entire economic approach. Again, the argument over whether government should spend more on social programs has already been settled by the laws of math. Mr. Obama has added more to the national debt than all presidents from George Washington through Ronald Reagan–combined. The Keynesian experiment has been a miserable failure. Math doesn’t lie.
These seven facts mean that all presidential candidates must speak to a singular reality: America is a debtor nation. Indeed, America has $15 trillion less than the homeless man you see on the street. Put another way, that homeless man is $15 trillion richer than the United States of America. All the presidential candidates–including Mr. Obama–should stop and ponder that reality for a moment.
After all, it’s a mathematical fact.

I'd like to add one more.
8. Every 3rd person you see dropping $20s in a slot machine is on food stamps.
7 reasons whey this turd POTUS should get fired and no republican that can articulate this to the American people…….
If the repub candidates would use the above seven points instead of trashing each other, the brat's ratings would drop considerably. Why is it repubs continue to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory? They seem to be their own worst enemy.
None of the GOP front runners has the balls to do anything about any of those 7 points.
In fact, most politicians won't do anything about them for fear of not being re-elected. That's what happens when politics becomes your career. You end bribing people with their own (or other peoples') tax dollars.
My 14 year old son could read these facts off a teleprompter and get elected over the socialist POS that occupies the White House……
Employers also run background checks on credit, so to all those people that have been railroaded by Fannie and Freddies's collusion with big government, good luck getting a job. A credit check for employment shouldn't be legal but the big credit conglomerates lobbyist have written the laws that make it legal.
Then to change jobs not only does credit matter but a job seeker has to compete with a government bonus for hiring someone that has been out of work–the bonus is 5K I think?
Herman Cain could have.
"What do you call it when someone steals someone else's money secretly? Theft. What do you call it when someone takes someone else's money openly by force? Robbery. What do you call it when a politician takes someone else's money in taxes and gives it to someone who is more likely to vote for him? Social Justice."
"………wrap their minds and messages around these seven mathematical facts:……"
And all we concern ourselves with is;…….
Perry getting only two out of three,……
Gingrich wanting to pardon a FEW illegals,………
Bachman not knowing who was born in Iowa,……..
Romney's changes of heart (for the good I might add)
and making sure Democrats and Independents control our primaries.
Which brings me to this;………..
Anyone who thinks Gingrich and Perry should not,…….
be in the Virginia primary,……..
IS AN IDIOT AND A TOOL FOR THE DEMS.
Mr Hall, You see the increasing "food stamp" percentage as Obama's failure. Mr Obama sees that as the accomplishment of a major goal. Statist control the population by manipulating the availability and price of food… Mr Obama would love for us ALL to need "food stamps", IMO – as a U.S. food producer.
The pertinent question is, will the American public believe what is before their eyes in time to stop this statist destruction of everything good about our past bountiful way of life.
.
3 years of socialist government = food stamp POTUS. Communism is the largest imminent threat to America. Islamo nazis are a distraction. The Communist Islamo nazi team VS freedom. Obama represents that team perfectly.
I'd like to add another mathematical fact.
424 people have responded to Jeffery Scott Shapiro's hit piece on BG from last evening, about Ron Paul.
I find that interesting
Of course unemployment rose under Obama. He promised that everything would be provided and that he was going after "rich, white folks" to pay for everything he promised.
This is why he will be re-elected and Congress will be even more dysfunctional because the number of ideological zealots will be increased to historic proportions.
Corn, I'm curious.
Some things I don't know much about.
Is it ok to buy a Prime Rib with foodstamps?
Sadly, no they won't. That mentality has been firmly cemented in and once on it, it's like crack.
I fear it's going to take something much more than a vote now.
Dear Ms. Pone, you are one very smart cowgirl. Only in November will we see how smart the American public really is. In the words of Forest Gump, "Stupid is as stupid does."
Ricky.
Here is one statistic your forgot: In January, 2009, the Dow lost 700+ points and ended the month around 8,000. It is above 12,000 today. Gosh, I hate it when that happens. Oh, not really.
Right on point!
The general herd that that benefits from the government charities may not like Obama but they'll damn sure vote for him if they see the Repubs as either a threat to the freebies or requiring them to pony up more payroll tax, as they just did.
and the unemployment rate was around 6 but now,…….
as you say, the DOW is above 12,000, but,…….
the unemployment number is what there Mr. Stats,…..???????
Now that something you can really hate,…ay Bo…….?????
The problem is,
Liberals are just to damn stubborn to admit the errors of there ways. Brainwashed and clueless, they keep voting for those who only use them and are out to destroy all our lives.
Don't forget the record homelessness, dollar devaluation and debt.
FOUR MORE YEARS !!!
FOUR MORE YEARS !!!
Dumb ASSES !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Prime Rib is a food group, after all. Along with lobster, beer, wine, whiskey, beer and cigarettes. Haven't you seen Moochele's new inverted food triangle?
LOL, I feel like Miss Manners, being asked a question about etiquette.
As far as I can tell it should be okay to buy Prime Rib with food-stamps. I base that on personal experience though, and not knowledge of any government hand-book. I witnessed a very "healthy", very well-dressed, jewel and gold bedecked couple loading their grocery cart to the top with ALL the rare delicacies WM has to offer. Visions of a huge party about to happen danced in my noggin for the rest of my shopping excursion. It happened that I was behind them at the check-out, and I witnessed him continue to run back to get more and more stuff as we waited for our turns to pay out. I was so happy to see a minority couple obviously doing very well financially… as I stood there waiting behind them I fantasized about what sort of business they must be in… until she whipped out a Lone Star card to pay for the groceries she purchased… Then I just thought WTH is going on in this nation?
.
So you like propping up the stock market while we suffer record poverty and such (the list is so long it's not worth the time posting)? Now you're a Goldman Sachs honk? I thought you were one of the occucrappers. Can't you keep things straight?
Explin to us why you defend:
1) Record poverty
2) record homelessness
3) Record debt
4) Record unemployment.
See, you take stupidity to a new level. When we do medical studies on new drugs, two things will stop a study before it is completed. Side effects that are SO BAD, that it is immoral and dangerous to continue the study, OR the drug is SO EFFECTIVE that is is considered immoral to deny patients the benefits of the drug.
GUESS WHICH CAMP YOU SUPPORT AND WANT TO CONTINUE ALONG DUMB ASS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Up now at the lede on Drudge "I Need Another $1.2 Trillion". Apparently the WH has signaled that they're going after another increase in the debt ceiling. Oh joy. Another two month fight in DC over what should be the most obvious 'No' vote in recent history followed by the pitiful sight of every politician eventually caving in to continue spending more money we don't have.
Screw this whole mess. Screw the Democrats. Screw the Republicans. Get some people in office who understand that financing our way through life can only end in either collapse, tyranny or revolution – and possibly all three.
Only if the lobster are under 2 pounds
I think the unemployment is way to low but the number that is not dicussed is the under employement number.
Are 20% of the people working in jobs "under the pay grade" ?
30 %
How may folks are working past the retirement date becuase they must.
Between the unemployed and the under employment issue does do these elected official continue to stay on power?
I see behavior like that everywhere including relatives. It is a societal epidemic.
Even on the edge of personal ruin, people keep right on spending beyond their means to buy things they don't need and can't afford, in the belief that if and when they run out of money, someone will step in to provide for them. It's a related mentality that leads to near riots to purchase overpriced but trendy pairs of basketball shoes made in China.
Or this, a flash riot of gangsta teens at the Mall of America. Looks like a random swarm of violent vermin in an upscale mall on the day after Christmas. Anyone else recall this type of behavior anywhere in America in your own lifetime?
Over past decades, the American public voted in politicians who promised to enable faux prosperity, and politicians keep promising to keep the game going if re-elected. Sort of a junkie-pusher relationship. The public got the government it deserved. The self-inflicted damage is already done, but there's still hope of eventual repair if the cycle is broken now.
And, in some Democrat circles, Corzine's leadership of MF Global and its resulting bankruptcy may be seen as a resume' enhancement. Gosh, I hate it when that happens. Oh, not really.
By the way Bo, I mean this with all sincerity. Invest EVERY DIME you have in the stock market, and keep it there for all of 2012. I can't think of a better place for you to keep your money than in the Dow. PLEASE put ALL of your money in the Dow and ride the wave that Obamanomics will inevitably bring.
Better go check your statistics, Ralph. In January, 2009, it was 7.8% and climbing. http://data.bls.gov/timeseries/LNS14000000
Time to kick the children out of the White House and install some adults. The only 'Hope and Change' we have left is higher unemployment and a 40% larger National Debt.
"Then I just thought WTH is going on in this nation?"
We be doomed!
"The laws of math have settled the argument: either we return to limited government or we face economic collapse."
It would appear that economic collapse is very realisitcally one of the goals of the progressive left. According to an American Thinker article: "Their (Cloward-Piven–capable reps of the progressive left) goal is to overthrow capitalism by overwhelming the government bureaucracy with entitlement demands. The created crisis provides the impetus to bring about radical political change." <a href="http://(http://www.americanthinker.com/2009/02/the_clowardpiven_strategy_of_e.html)” target=”_blank”>(http://www.americanthinker.com/2009/02/the_clowardpiven_strategy_of_e.html)
President Obama stated that America was going to fundamentally change. The dems have no intention of returning to limited government or fiscal responsibility. This is a well-organized, coordinated internal attack on America by our own elected representatives. As many of them as possible simply must go in 2012 and eventually the entire dem party must be eradicated. They have proven themselves to be enemies of America. Time for them to go.
Because, dumb ass, the economy crashed under Bush. Does TARP ring a bell? Or the failure of Lehman Brothers? Perhaps the bailout of the auto industry? HMMMM. Now think hard, think real hard. Who was president when this happened? So, dumb ass, do you think you can dig out of a hole this big overnight? Better stick to medicine, doctor.
Employers also review everything you write online and can find your work even when you use aliases. Everything you write on BG.com could someday come back to haunt you.
Don't blame the dems. That one was on you guys.
Talk about idiots… try winning the nomination without competing in VA.
All resulting from Democrat control of both houses…just sayin
Teabaggers are doomed. It's a self destructive, self loathing way of looking at the world. You have influenced your last election.
It's sad that you consider that a lot of posts. Liberal sites get 10s of thousands of hits on an interesting post.
You're a liar. Obama never said anything about going after white people. That's all in your twisted, simple little mind.
Over 700,000 jobs were lost the month Obama took the oath of office. The rate of job losses immediately began to recede and were never that high again.
Democrats had been in charge of the Congress less than two years by the time of the crash. The problem was years in the making, and most of those years saw control of the House, Senate and White House in Republican hands.
I'm 100 percent invested in the market and always have been. Betting against the United States is a fools bet.
This recession was created by conservative politics. Deregulation and trickle down economics. The major government involvement was after the banks began to fail.
You are right. And the reaction of the House is to give us abortion and same sex marriage legislation that they know will not be taken up in senate or gain the signature of the president. They will lose the House in 12 for their inaction.
The economy almost collapsed on the Republican watch and Republicans have been trying to find a way to blame Democrats ever since. Obama will be rewarded by the voters in 2012 for not letting Republicans throw us into a depression.
*lol*
For someone who pretends to be smart, you sure know how to regurgitate talking points.
RINO / DEM
Can you tell the difference….?????
The reality of today's unemployment figures are,…
best reflected in the number of long term jobless combined with,…….
new stay at home food stampers who,………
have given up looking for a job.
This is NEW and all of Obama's making.

Obama to Seek Third Debt Ceiling Increase Since Summer Deal

Methinks we were Cloward/Pivined!
.
Actually, if you read the article you'll find this one is covered under the agreement passed last Summer, it happens automatically unless the Congress votes it down (and then the President can veto that vote). Not going to be a big fight this time.
But, I expect there will be a big fight when the administration spends all of this increase before the election and has to ask for another debt ceiling increase. And when that happens they should be hammered.
I hear ya TLD, FYI a "Lone Star" card is food stamps in Texas…
I also have a few relatives who are living the dream of conspicuous consumerism, on credit cards, and they will be the first to fall when the commieCRATS carefully choreographed collapse happens. Those poor teens and twenty-ish offspring of theirs won't know what hit them. I see us dealing with many very angry people in the future.
"……….The rate of job losses……."
The rate of sinking for the Titanic also,……..
receded as it got closer to the bottom.
"……..So, dumb ass, do you think you can dig out of a hole this big overnight?….."
And all this time I thought you were smarter,…….
than Oprah Winfrey.
Thanks OCP. The twenty-somethings will have it bad for sure. Not only are they inheriting the debt of their big-living boomer parents, with the accompanying diminished prospects…many are ill-equipped by their education to understand what is happening and why. And they grew up, not only in a time of peak prosperity, but debt-fueled excess. That is the norm in their mind, their frame of reference for all that is to follow. I agree absolutely: All that, plus a coarse, value-less popular culture is a recipe for many very angry people in the near future. The flash riot at Mall of America is just one early symptom.
No, its still called SLAVERY!
The ones demanding to live-within-the-means are now labeled the self-destructive, self-loathing extremists.
To the degree that view is shared by the public, we will be doomed.
See, Europe. Or, keep wearing those rose-colored glasses if you prefer.
Do you say that as one who is NOT working?
I mean Everything you write COULD someday come back to haunt you…right?
You have a whole lot more to worry about then any of us.
MM hire the troll?…Gee what do you think HR? Hire the Troll?
It is still called Robbery…and you can add to that Unjust…and those who are empowered by it will share Caesars fate.
Using my check card I hit the wrong button at checkout. Oh said the counter thats cash back for the food stamp card…What you can get cash back on a food stamp card?
Yep…UFB
Obama will win another term. The Republican candidates seem to be determined to get him elected. So was McCain. the question is why?
Nobody wants to be captain of the titanic after it hit the iceberg. Simply put, 2012 is a suicide note.
Fact 9: 48.5% of all Americans live in a household that receive some type of government benefit. This is unsustainable! When this statistic rises over 50%, it will be virtually impossible to reverse. What person is going to vote out politicians that keep their benefits going? Our Founding Fathers warned us of the entitlement state.
Thomas Jefferson said, “The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not.”
So you like Dr Sowell also.
The market went up in the same proportion that the value of the dollar went down. If I took $600.00 dollars in twenty dollar gold pieces to the auto dealer I could pay the same for the car as was paid in 1920. Just look at the loss of value in the dollar.
Yep, I don't get counted under the stats because I have a job. I work for a measly 40 hours every month. Welcome to the ranks of the underemployed. Maybe I'll get full-time status. Maybe. And maybe pigs will learn to fly …
You are missing the 15 budget and jobs bills that have been passed from the House? Oh wait, you're a troll. So it's reject reality and substitute your own.
You won't hear about any of this because the truth hurts and the only possible solutions are too scary and too painful for most Americans to want to contemplate. It's so bad that the voters would punish anyone who dared speak them or try to run on a platform composed around them. And the opposition would demogogue the issue. Look what happened to Ryan when he tried and his budget didn't go far enough IMO although it was a large step in the right direction. He got ads run against him that featured him running grandma off a cliff in a wheelchair, ads that were largely successful. I'm afraid the best way to prepare for this is to prepare on a personal level for absolute collapse.
Obama's mouth piece, the Rev. Wright said it and continues to say it for him.
Yes, things are worse under Obama than they were under GW. And things under GW were far worse than they were under Clinton.
Do you Sheepublicans really believe that your party has any answers?
This rubs me the wrong way. It does seem to bash a bit on Obama specifically, and in these comments there are several people that are obviously staunchly opposed to the idea of there even being such things as democrats or liberals. It does seem that the author doesn't take into account the parabolic nature of the resulting effects of a system. If any particularly strong financial legislation is passed right this minute, the cumulative and overall effect of that legislation might not be fully felt for 3 or 4 years. Or perhaps even 10 years, depending on a host of other variables within the system. The fact is, the true effects of most any type of legislation are not felt strongly for quite a while. In fact, when legislation and projects to change such things as how energy is used nationally project engineers even speak in such terms; for example, "The planned Energy Savings Bill is estimated to drop average household electric bills by as much as 8% by the year 2015, saving the populace an average of $16.8 billion in energy consumption costs for that year."
No matter what Obama sets in motion, it will have a lasting ripple effect, and the next president will be dealing with it, whether it ends up being a net positive or negative, for at least the majority of his/her entire first term, and perhaps much longer.Because it's too soon to know for sure, for a host of reasons, I've honestly still not formed a complete opinion on how I think Obama's decisions may play out in the long run; but he is dealing with the problem of a bazillion dollars having been spent on a war started by another president. No matter his decisions on how and when to continue or withdraw from that same war, he has to deal with fiscal ramifications of decisions executed within the prior eight-ish years; and even before that. Bush had a nice chunk of change to throw at a war, not through his own brilliant economic decisions, but through an amalgam of the two or three presidents' combined decisions before him.
And in a system much larger than any president, in which results are dependent on a myriad of interdependent and highly complex variables, effects of decisions and actions are very rarely immediate enough to be able to use to directly judge a single person's decision-making skills. Generally speaking, for the most part, to have any level of legitimacy in your conclusions about any particular decisions or groups of decisions or actions, you are coerced to look at effects over some range of time, taking into account other decisions that are subsequently made, and how those tie into those effects. The system and the results of its actions are always dependent on time and the entirety of that same system. To be fair and accurate, you must look at the organization and its environment instead of just at one seat.
"…and soon now we shall go out of the house and go into the convulsion of the world, out of history into history and the awful responsibility of Time." – Robert Penn Warren
Very nice explanation of the systems thinking necessary to properly analyze the situation properly in order to develop meaningful solutions. Blaming one person or the other is not a way to formulate a proper analysis of the causes/effects relating to this state of affairs, no-less develop solutions.
I am sick and tired of the notion that blaming Obama in such general, and meaningless, terms is a proper way to identify the problems and thus the fix. Absurd.
Mr Obammer also want's to see the price of gasoline go over $10.00 a gallon so he can spend more of our money on his green energy BS. He sure is on the right track for that. I anticipate him going over to the middle east when he get's back from vaca to do some more bowing and find a way to get Iran to close the strait. Ahhhh, oil over $200.00 a barrel. Can't wait.
So, tell me, how much of that going in stock values did you see? Or anybody else in mainstream America? You do realize that Obama printed over $3 trillion dollars and it all went into stocks (and future inflation) right? How about $16 trillion in undisclosed emergency bank lending? It's called market and currency manipulation. I could go on, but these terms are obviously an alien language to a clueless dupe like yourself. If you buy into this "rally", you need help.
Basic fact is that Washington and Obama have screwed thing up so bad, that we are screwed for the next presidential term anyway. Probably better that he gets to preside over what he has sown.
Mr. Hall commits the common reasoning error and confuses correlation with causation; here he cites as the cause of economic distress the fact that Obama is in the White House. In fact, it is fairer to say that these economic problem correlate to Obama being in the White House. The actual cause of the economic problems are Chamber of Commerce and Republican pro business policies that date back to Bush one in the White House.
What are the real causes of the present economic distress:
(1) Republican designed "free trade" policies that let manufacturers pay slave wages in China and export the products for sale at Wal-Mart in the United States. The single factor most likely to restore manufacturing jobs in the US would be to stop free trade.
(2) Aggressive anti-union "right to work" policies in southern US states. US manufacturing has shifted to those states where union discipline cannot force employers to pay fair wages. The single factor most likely to restore good wages in the US would be to create a level playing field for unions in all 50 states. End "right to work" laws that are used to stop unions from protecting worker rights.
(3) Poorly designed health and safety regulations that regulate "places" not goods in commerce. What is the difference between a car manufactured in Mexico and one manufactured across the border in Texas? In Texas you are not allowed to pollute. In Mexico, you can pollute. Our pollution rules should be written to apply to products sold in the US (where ever they are made) not merely to factories located in the US.
Those three changes would do much to restore prosperity. Failed "big business" and Chamber of Commerce policies advocated by Republicans are to blame, not Obama.
Umm, hello, Ron Paul has been trying to slash spending for about 30 years now. In fact, he's proposed to slash $1 TRILLION dollars in spending his first year in office. You probably missed that though, since the mainstream media refuses to give him any coverage other than the usual "he can't/won't win" regurgitation. Anyone still on the fence about the man should read the following article. It does a great job of explaining why Ron Paul is the man to get the job done…
http://ladyliberty1776.blogspot.com/
I believe Conservatives have the answers because God knows Liberals absolutely do not. Here are the answers Conservatives have:
God, guns, American oil, strong defense, no illegal immigration, spending control, less government, less taxes, less abortion.
Conservatives, not Republicans, will implement the above. And the best way to do it is:
- immediate tax cuts
- immediate and massive spending cuts
- immediately begin withdrawing troops/advisors from Afghanistan
- immediately staff the Mexican border with troops, drones, cameras and a wall
- Immediately cut every single government agency and program with many to be eliminated entirely
- Immediately cut every penny of foreign aid. Put the UN on notice they have exactly one year to leave
- Immediately open up drilling on American soil for gas, oil, minerals and do rapid-approval of nuclear plants
That's a start.
Yes that certainly sounds like a start…..to a Republican Presidential campaign. Unfortunately, except for maybe some token tax cuts, NONE of those will be actually implemented.
Another Math Fact:
And if Romney is the Repub nominee, Obama is virtually assured of four more years… Almost in the states that count who voted for Obama in 2008 will vote for Romney this time. Romney would lose by over 3%
