How Ignorant and Misguided Can Charles Schumer Be?
by Veronique de Rugy
Think big. Gigantic. This is the latest from Charles Shumer, the Democrat from New York:
When he found out that Adidas was planning to outsource manufacturing of NBA jerseys he “called on the league to terminate its contract with the German-based sportswear giant unless it halts plans to transfer production of game-day jerseys from an upstate New York facility to Thailand.”
Great idea! Let’s make sure that we force companies to produce stuff at the highest possible cost in the name of some lame “buy and make American” nonsensical theory. I am sure that forcing Adidas to give up on the possibility to reduce its production costs will do wonders for this economy.
Besides, as George Mason University’s Don Boudreaux noted in a still unpublished letter to the editor of the New York Daily News yesterday:
“I wonder where Mr. Schumer’s business suits are made. All in the U.S.? What about his shoes? His neckties? His underwear? How about the coffee he drinks? The flowers he buys for his wife in January? Are these all made in America?
Does Mr. Schumer eat cheese from only Vermont and Wisconsin? Drink wine from only California and Oregon? Does he vacation only in places such as Maui and Martha’s Vineyard? Does he listen to only recordings made by musicians holding U.S. passports? Does he read books written only by American authors, and decorate his home with only those paintings, vases, and sculptures produced by Americans residing in U.S. locales such as Santa Fe and Manhattan? Is his life nearly devoid of modern consumer electronics, given that very few of these devices are today manufactured in America?
I don’t know Mr. Schumer personally, but I’ll bet my pension that his everyday consumption consists of countless products containing such large quantities of non-American inputs and labor that, were Mr. Schumer suddenly to rid his existence of these foreign contributions to his living standard, he would soon find himself ignorant and appallingly impoverished.”
And of course we know that Schumer has always had great ideas about how to improve the health of our nation. For instance, his big contribution at the job summit yesterday was to ask that the Census Bureau staff go to unemployment offices around the state to hire temporary workers for the 2010 population count.
Way to go Charlie!

Charles Schumer, champion of the oppressed!
Whadda, I say, whadda, I say whadda guy! On the other hand, he's a total idiot.
The only wall he seems to want to build is so that no one can leave…a sort of "Enter Only" door…

great article….but, you fogot one thing….How will Schumer negotiate repayment of our current debt to foreign nations ??? the current 800 billion dollars of debt we owe China?? the 800 billion dollars of debt we owe Japan?? and the 250 billion of debt we owe South Korea???….and then toss in all the other debt we owe Europe, et al????….without all these loans to fund his Federal govt. bureacracy… where and how does Schumer expect to finace — you know, capitalize — his inefficient, probably unionized pathetic business located in the highest taxing and bankrupt state of New York???? Come on — this is laughable. He should be happy China, Japan and the others don't call in their debt, or take Manhattan in exchange as collateral for the soon to be in default debt.
This is how insane these liberals are. They want to keep pro jerseys manufactured in America, but they suppport NAFTA and CAFTA and illegal immigration, which has outsourced tens of miilions American jobs here andoverseas.
We can only look to the idiot voters, that keep re-electing these clowns to office, and the rest of us have to pay the price.
"Does he vacation only in places such as Maui and Martha’s Vineyard?"
Well he'd feel right at home. Maui is paradise. But Mainland transplants on Maui are hyper-sycophantic hyper-liberal eggheads. Think Berkeley. Where else are there more Kucinich stickers than apple bananas?
"I don’t know Mr. Schumer personally"
For the right price Mr. Boudreaux we can. He is part of the Snake Oil Coalition with Nancy, Harry and Chris.
Yes, let's make laws that we must buy goods produced only in our own country following the example of other progressive countries like North Korea and Zimbabwe
"were Mr. Schumer suddenly to rid his existence of these foreign contributions to his living standard, he would soon find himself ignorant and appallingly impoverished.”
Maybe impoverished would be a consequence of such an unlikely action, but I am afraid that the "Ignorant" part is a fact of many years duration already. And there is little hope for the miracle needed to undo that.
How Ignorant and Misguided can Charles Schumer Be? Ah Veronique you tease me with your Headline. Charles Schumer is a Politician and 90% of the current Politicians are Ignorant and Misguided. Moreover, you forgot to use Idiot, Moron, and Charles Schumer in the same sentence!
Rememeber to vote in 2010 and 2012
Chuckie is probably the most detestable of all the statists in the senate, and he is one of my senators.
I am already investing my time and money towards defeating him in 2010, although it will not be easy.
A worthwhile challenger will be a key component to make this happen.
You're too kind. Schumer makes your average idiot sound like a rocket scientist. If there's such a thing as a perfect vacuum, it's between his ears.
He'd rather pander to unions then save jobs. I think the voters are smart enough to know the plant is closing either way due to the taxes and business climate in NY.
Over regulation, Unions, unenforced trade laws are just a few reasons companies leave the US. Maybe Schumer and the other people in Washington DC should learn how to encourage companies to move to the US. Instead we get anti business anti job creation policy.
Perhaps instead of trying to strong-arm businesses into staying in NY, where it is nearing the point that you have to be "dumb" to run a business or live as a well off person there, he should try making his state a more appealing place to have a business and live. So maybe, ya know, they can employ some people? But that's just crazy talk.
Scientist? Does Moron Schumer have anything to do with Global Warming?

Wow!!! Chuckie took a well-deserved day off from shaking down Wall Street to weigh in on trade issues.
That's it Chuck, let's force folks to buy American at all costs. How about some tariffs on imported jerseys while you're at it? Wait until the American manufacturing base disappears after crap and trade, then he will really have something to whine about. Hey NY'ers, sack that windbag!
Ignorance combined with arrogance. That is Chuck. Please, Please NY, rid us of this clown.
Yet another display of how Government has no clue as to how business actually works.
Maybe we can outsource congress…to real Americans who actually care about his country.
There are rocks smarter than Charles Schumer.
IntenseDebate Notification <DIV>Methane has been classified as a geenhouse gas, so the answer would be yes.</DIV> <DIV style=\”FONT: 10pt arial\”>
Why does a politician from a bankrupt state think he can give economic advice? What a joke!
I can smell it now…a Schumer sponsored amendment in the health care bill to provide bailout to the Adidas company that would allow the government to be a primary shareholder. Next, telling Adidas where to buy their jerseys.
On one hand Sen Schumer wants companies to stay in the United States and keep their jobs here. At the same time he is working to crush American small business under a mountain of liberal largess. Perhaps moving the Senator offshore would help fix the problem.
"How Ignorant and Misguided Can Charles Schumer Be?"
Rhetorical question. One may have asked, "How high is up?"
But with his current cronies, even that statement is subjective…
I second that.
Nevermind his stupidness… What place does the government (he represents the governmentwith this statement) have in telling a private business where to do business? This is ANOTHER example of UNCONSITUTIONAL behavior! This is not his job as a government official!!!!!
If only there was a way to tax the 100% American made leftist B.S. that comes out of the mouths of Schumer and the rest of the half-baked liberal army of morons infesting this country. We'd erase the deficit in a day.
Chuck Schumer believes that the people who vote for him are ignorant, that is why he talks down to them . He knows better.
Do by example, not by preaching. There's nothing wrong in asking people to see where their products are manufactured if that's what you do yourself. I doubt that happens with this guy!
Thanks New York. Couldn't you come up with someone better that Chuckie?
We shouldn't have laws "forcing" anyone to buy American. However, Americans should choose to buy American/local if at all possible, b/c it will help our economy.

What is it Laura Ingraham refers to him as? Oh ,yes UPCHUCK Schumer. No further comment is needed, that says it all.
No ides? Stupid ideas? Hold a "jobs summit" and get some press coverage for yourself.
Im sure they have plenty of room at GITMO for him. Im quite sure SKM would LOVE having UPCHUCK for a cellmate. SKM, you have my OK to impose some "sharia law" on UPCHUCK.
Wow… youre a fuckin idiot! The whole lot of you, and the author.
Nothing hurts this country more than outsourcing. I'd explain that a little deeper, but you morons wouldn't understand anyways.
And yet you fools jump right on this ass' bandwaggon. And why? Because conservatives don't think! They just follow! Lolz, you fuckin' retards.
Mr. Boudreaux's all-or-nothing equation is ridiculous.
No one can possibly ensure that everything they eat or use is made in America. But nothing is wrong with trying to ensure that as much as possible of what you buy is made in America. That might include small things like buying at local farmer's market, for instance.
As well, it's one thing to buy coffee from another country. It's another to buy products from foreign countries that, at one time, were almost exclusively produced here.
I venture to say that most of the people here would be singing a different tune if they were replaced by an H1B visa worker, or told they had no job because it was shipped off to India.

A sound economy is not made up of workers toiling soely at Starbucks and McDonald's. Without the space to parse this out, I can only refer the readers here to the work of Paul Craig Roberts on this subject, and going back to reread what one of the pre-requisites for free, fair and honest trade are: that each country has something valuable the other one wants, and that capital investment in that product stays withint the country.
It is certainly true that taxes, government regulations and unions have driven business overseas. And that must be resolved. And quickly. Still, Americans do not consider their workers ants; Asians do. Even with out the unions and taxes, it is likely that foriegn countries could underprice American goods via labor costs.

And for those who challenge Mr. Schumer, a leftist bufoon, on where his consumer goods come from, I issue this challenge: If you are all so wedded to capitalist ideology, which one of you is wiling to work for 50 cents an hour. After all, the invisible hand rules. Who among you is willing to watch his wages get cut to keep up with a more efficient competitor overseas? The invisible hand rules. If your son graduates with an engineering degree and can't get a decent job because companies are hiring Indians who will work for one-third of the wages he rightly ought to be paid, may I assume you will cheer the efficiency of the marketplace?
With all due respect to the author and commenters here, free trade is a religion and ideology. In the end, it's going to kill us.
QUESTION: "How ignorant and misguided can Charles Schumer be?"
ANSWER: Incredibly…
If Samsung made its LED TV here, the screen would be under 20 inches, it would weigh 400lbs., and a third of the pixels wouldn't work, just before it failed…
Like Chrysler…
If Americans can COMPETE, then COMPETE!
Otherwise, cry me a river…upstate…
(That's why we have the best Health Care…and why the Schmuck backs the deconstruction of it)…
The slime Chuck U Shumer exudes is just grotesque. Would love if someone started digging into his background and pointed out his skeletons. Any man that exudes such oily scum has to have some real awesome corruption in his closet…wink wink nudge nudge…hint hint.
He earned my everlasting hatred when he basically gloated over the last election saying Reaganism is dead…oh really Chuckie? OH REALLY?
Lost your job to another automatic chicken-plucker, did you?
Adapt…or die…or join a union…
BTW: How's the "Rope and Chains" working out for YOU…?
Would you all say it's time to ask for their heads?
It's called global markets knuckle head.
heh, lolz…
Does the senate dining room serve idiot laced food? They all seem to partake of it…..
Have you ever seen such an adorable face? Charlie K sticks his ugly mug into every camera lens he can find. But then, Charlie K thinks he's cute. He's smart, too.
How Ignorant and Misguided Can Charles Schumer Be?
Well, do we use Cynthia McKinney, Barbara Boxer, or Corrine Brown as our apogee of ignorance, or are we talking about a whole new level of dumb? Because if anyone can top those three benchmarks, one can only assume that lobbyist money is skewing the raw data.
But hey, Chuckie, way to represent the guys!
That stupid looking smile he has makes me just want to punch him.

Chuck Schumer is Al D'Amato without the class
New York STATE perhaps. But New York CITY is the tail that wags the dog of state there. Nothing to be done, unless we could turn the 5 boroughs into their very own state. The rest of NY might be able to revive.
Who says conservatives aren't fair? The Barbara Boxer story this morning was a chance for all the consertavtive Californians to whine about the liberalism of their state politicians. Biggovernment is very nice to give us New Yorkers a chance to do the same. Thanks!
I do. I am not in the market for a car, but if I were, I'd consider a Nissan because they put several thousand of my fellow Tennesseeans to work every day. Ford puts Mexicans to work to build their "American" cars. Or I'd get a Hyundai made down the road a piece in Alabama, rather than a Dodge also built in Mexico.
Lest any of you come at me with the "profits go back to Japan/Korea" argument, please note that ANYone can buy shares in either company and share in those profits. Second, those profits built factories for my fellow Americans to work in.
He will definitely have my vote against him.
This title sounds like the beginning of a joke. I need a punchline…
Does anyone remember that Scmucky Schumer is the one who recommended Paulson to Bush — as he was a "FRIEND" OF PAULSON'S.
SCHMUCKY should be investigated for his role in bringing about the dems sept/Oct surprise from last year. . .this man should be in jail.

He probably has illegals doing his yard work.
How about the jerseys for non-American players? Can only German factories produce Dirk Nowitzki jerseys? Or only Canadian factories make Steve Nash stuff? In the words of that great philosopher, Bugs Bunny, "What a maroon."
Thanks Jayne47 – you are the only one that seems to get the overarching message. Everybody else is just bashing a liberal, even though he makes a patriotic and conservative point that all of us would eat like cake if it came from Rush. Just shows that most readers here are just exercising cheap politics as usual…
Chuckie puts on his glasses and pretends to read something while Reid is speaking in 3…2…1…
Amazing how these idiots in Washington can't see how the unions, high taxes, and crime have constantly pushed businesses and jobs from the pro- i mean regressive states to the south. And of course, some have gone completely out of the US and will continue to do so.
1) LOWER STATE TAXES
2) ELIMINATE CAPITAL GAINS TAXES
3) REDUCE THE INCOME TAX TO 10% ACROSS THE BOARD
4) IMMEDIATELY STOP HEALTHCARE TAKEOVER
5) KILL CAP & TAX AND ADMIT THE SCIENCE IS FLAWED
6) IMPLEMENT TERM LIMITS
DO THESE THINGS AND THE ECONOMY TO TAKE OFF LIKE A CAT WITH TERPENTINE ON ITS ASS!!!!!!
I despise Schumer and this certainly is a misguided action, however, even if it were a good move, it’s still TOO LITTLE TOO LATE!! He and our other career politicians of the last 30 years (both parties) already have shipping containers of blood on their hands. If they cared about American jobs, they wouldn’t have gotten us into NAFTA and other trade deals that allowed American jobs to leave this country at an ever-escalating rate and help their mission of turning us into a 3rd world country.
I am for higher tariffs on imported goods, so that American workers have a fighting chance against foreign workers who are paid slave wages. Corporations do have the right to move their jobs anywhere they please, but they shouldn’t get a free ride to pollute the countryside of nations with minimal environmental regulations. Where is Al Whore on this issue??!! I am definitely on the opposite side of the Global warming nuts, but there are still things we should do to sustain the planet.
One more thing…am I missing the sarcasm or did I read this right? Even though we don’t have the option to do this much…since when is buying American made products lame nonsensical theory????
The reality is that the US can not compete with overseas prices and never will unless we stoop to their level. I don't know about you but I like it here. I'm not ready to move into a mud hut or live in a govt/factory run housing making $6 a day and a bowl of rice just so I can say we are competing with the rest of the world. The US should get back to taking care of ourselves first. Every dollar you send to China by purchasing some trinket at Walmart, is a dollar that won't be there to go into your paycheck next week. Be American-Buy American.
One of the biggest idiots there is. And one of the most dangerous.
As a lifelong New Yorker I can say that if you took New York City out of the mix you'd have a red state. Kind of like the way Pittsburgh and Philly screw it up for all the Pennsylvanians in between.
Funny ppl from USA. I am from India the land of 1300 milion and people here
time and again elect one ITALIAN School dropout who enrolled on electoral rolls before even
becoming permanent resident(which is punishable but got away bcuz her idiot stupid moron husband
is son of a PM) and she doesnt know how many states are there in India but she sells off indians one dime (any takers plz) bcuz she has the support of white racists nations like America, UK Aus canada etc.
So why are you ppl whining about? Stop interfering in other nations and give 100 years and america would return to normal nation of morons.
HOW IGNORANT? This is the same CLOWN that said the American people don't care about a $200 MILLION dollar pork bill he and his liberal cronies proposed earlier this year. Then there was the use of a 99% tax on executive bonuses to get their POS TARP bill passed. PEOPLE OF NEW YORK: HAVE YOU HAD ENOUGH OF THIS CLOWN YET?
So, if jobs get outsourced, Adidas takes away jobs from Americans, which is bad, and the government must put a stop to this. And if Adidas doesn’t outsource the jobs, then government is forcing a company to produce at the highest possible cost.
Are you people serious?
