Cleaning Up Obama’s Mess in the Gulf
by Todd ThurmanA lot of things have gone wrong in the last 72 days since oil started spilling into the Gulf, and very few things have gone right. Unfortunately, the oil spilling into the Gulf is only one of many, many problems in the Gulf. There are the obvious problems of extremely polluted water, the oil soaked animals, the oil soaked beaches, the loss of tourism, the loss of jobs, and the loss of faith in the process that is supposed to ensure things like this never happen. But, why hasn’t the oil been cleaned up? Why is the leak still spewing oil into the Gulf? BP has their fair share of blame, but so does the federal government.

The government has had a lot of missteps. The EPA would not allow ships to skim oil from the water because they couldn’t get 100% of the oil out. They could only get 99% of the oil out. They failed to get rid of the horribly outdated Jones Act that forbids foreign vessels from helping us clean up the gulf. There have been plenty of problems with the way the Federal Government has reacted to the oil spill, but it’s never too late to start getting it right.
The Heritage Foundation has put together a list of things the Obama administration can do to mitigate the damage that the oil slick can still do. These are steps that can be taken immediately, and more items will be added to the list when appropriate. Simple things like waiving the Jones Act (as the Bush Administration did during Katrina), or accepting international assistance. Or allowing ships like the S.S. A-Whale–that has the capability to skim 500,000 barrels a day– to immediately start assisting efforts. It’s in the Gulf now, but it is still not being used.
One thing they should not do is halt the exploration for oil. The economy of the gulf relies heavily on oil exploration and The Heritage Foundation recommends President Obama end the moratorium on drilling. It is a knee-jerk reaction that has devastating long-term consequences. The list also calls for common sense solutions like not cutting the Coast Guard’s budget, and temporarily waiving EPA regulations that make no sense in these desperate times.
The Heritage Foundation’s list includes other things that should be done and it will be updated as items get completed. Read it here, and check back often, as they keep the administration accountable to the crisis he needs to lead us through.

Well, at least obama hasn't broken his pledge for no broken promises to the gulf coast region. He's sending a lot of oil.
A well reasoned article.
As long as the oil continues to flow, it can;t be cleaned up, nor beaches be returned to pristine fashion. It is that simple. This well is no different than a sinking boat. The only way to stop it, is to plug the hole. Cosequently, until the well is plugged, not much will happen. Except of course politicians jockeying for points, and traction.
There is something further wrong with this well in the Gulf.
What it is, nobody is saying, at least publicly.
The simple version is, IF that well could have been plugged, and shut in, it would have, months ago. The honest answer is, it can't be done under current conditions. The two relief wells that everyone is pinning their hopes on?
"Iffy" at best.
Stay tuned for more drama……..
"FOOOOOORRRRRRRREEEEEEEE"……I can hear Ogolfer coming now……
If we think this mess is hard to clean up, just wait and see the Reps. trying to clean up all the other sloppy messes from this dude.
Sure.
Whacking golf balls off of oil soaked Pelicans.
72 days since oil started leaking into the Gulf, What a ultimate failure that this administration is to all of US.
As soon as the oil clean-up workers organize and form a union, demand pay raises and retirement benefit packages, the job will start to get done,,,,,,,provided of course that they do not go on strike.
How's that 'social justice' thing working out for you Obama?
I will ask to one question nobody has asked, or had answered.
Who was BP's Insurance Carrier? Did Government owned AIG have a piece of that action?
That'll put a whole new twist on it!
With apologies to the Marxist John Paul Sartre and Jerzy Kosinsky, the title of Obama's next memoir should be "Being There and Nothingness". The POTUS's leadership on this disaster has exposed he and his admin. as incompetent even to his sycophants.
It's amazing how badly it's being handled by the Fed./BP. The EPA has to look at everthing before you do anything and then throw in all kinds of crazy rules like only skimmers that get 100% of the oil can be used etc… then the berms that may endanger some nesting sites (If the oil doesn't get there first) and now heavy surf from Alex.
Yes they have to plug the hole but they can get as much of the oil off the surface as they can until then and then start the final clean-up. Don't wait until all the coast is destroyed to start the clean-up.
THE CHOSEN ONE is waiting for CAP & TRADE to get passed then everthing will be fine.
Much like his position on Barder enforcement, this ecologic disaster needs to be milked to compell the republicans to accept HIS solution (crap and trade)
His syncophants still have their "Oblinders" on.
Simple fix. Contact Playtex and get a big friction plug.
Passive aggressive
Passive PROgressive
Obama may lift the skimmer blockade soon. How convenient to do it now and then have the Coast Guard keep them off the job because of the hurricane? He Blames Bush for global warming that generates hurricanes.
Just like promissing nuclear power. No one gets a permit but they could.
I'll make one more comment on the BP spill.
Capitalism is under attack. Barrack Obama just got 20 Billion from BP from a Jessie Jackson/Al Sharpton styled "shakedown". As a Corporation, as an International Business, BP first and foremost obligation is what, and to whom? It is not an obligation to the Gulf Coast, nor to the President of the United States. The cold, hard facts of business are, that BP's first and foremost obligation is to its Shareholders. To create, preserve and protect shareholder value. Period. Therein lies their conundrum, if they cannot stop the spill and plug the hole, shareholder value continues to deteriorate with their tarnished image, so it is in their best interest to stop the leak. Currently, BP share value is less than its breakup book value. Their reserves in the ground far exceed share value.
Is Barak Obama
1) a Muslim sympathizing neo-Marxist-true-believer who sees America and Capitalism as the principle barrier to fairness and world peace
2) an empty suit, an unwitting pawn of much larger hidden forces
3) a self obsessed narcissist who happened to be at the right place at the right time
4) all of the above
Quoted from: Bill Whittle, PJTV
Bush would of been impeached by now, yet the LSM isn't really doing much to put pressure on Obumble and his stumble-bum administration. What a travesty that this tragedy has to happen with these incompetent idjits at the helm of our great ship. I look to see the oil spilling until we get a new administration and real commander in chief rather than a thief masquerading as a commander.
Good article that shows how Obama has purposefully impeded the recovery of oil. Now we all know (they love a good crisis, they can get a lot done in a crisis). I believe this was done on purpose, or else how do you explain Obama dumping his stock two weeks before explosion? He had holdings with Vangaurd.
What he wants is to permanently cripple America with the CAP & TAX scheme. This would bring America down to third world countries. Who in their right mind would think that by adding a TAX will help the anything? It only helps Obamas rich friends. Not America……..but then he is a Muslim….
[...] In a post on the wingnut Andrew Breitbart’s cesspool, some asshat calling himself Todd Thurman makes the following complaint against the Obama administrat…: [...]
Barak Obama is doing a good job — of {wait for it} — destroying America.
This government has no interest in taking care of this problem. When you have a crisis that can help you to accelerate your agenda, and you have no moral compass other than Saul Alinsky, Karl Marx, or Mao Tse Tung, why would you want to do anything to prevent it? The American people are watching the most heinous display of government incompetence and corporate abrogation of responsibility since the initial days of the market meltdown in 2007. The disgusting display of arrogance and hubris by this administration, and the outright denial of this fact by the Fringe Media and their sycophants with 'Media Matters Not" and "Huff and Blow' is too unreal for words.
So here is my little chess match "twist" to this scenario.
BP should be simultaneously negotiating with the following:
PDVSA (Venezuela)
Sinopec (China)
North Korea
Iran
For the purchase and sale of their assests. Wouldn't that be an interesting political strategy, if Sinopec (the largest corporation in the world) bought BP and Obama now had to "deal" with our largest creditor? Wouldn't it be further interesting, if Obama woke up, and found he had to negotiate with Hugo Chavez? Further yet North Korea, or a Muslim Arabic Country. What would Obama do, if BP sold to an OPEC Country, and found OPEC just placed a fifty dollar tax per barrel to help with Gulf Coast cleanup?
Granted, these are all outside the box hypotheticals, but I am not the only independent thinker in the world. Somewhere, someone at BP is having these same conversations. Because as I stated above, BP's first responsibility is to its shareholders.
Obama would be wise to quit pushing and targeting Capitalism, before he pushes it right off a cliff.
He needs to go golfing for the next two years, then head back home to Indonesia.
I really am getting weary of hearing and reading about how FORE!bama has screwed up everything that he and his band of elitist incompetents have touched since ascending the throne, er…make that since the inauguration. This country knows what that group is all about, what they have done and will continue to do. We now have to get to mobilizing all rational voters (progressives need not apply) to storm the polls in November so that the housecleaning starts in earnest, including all of the progressives hiding in the republican party.
AMERICA: REMEMBER IN NOVEMBER, REMEMBER IN NOVEMBER, REMEMBER ……………..
Dont' wait for the Feds to do anything, just do it yourselves. Louisiana, start building those berms, start laying those booms, start running those skimmers.
What're the feds going to do? How are they going to stop you?
BingO, SK……….you win!
Thinking we may need to march to the Gulf o MX, rather than DC.
There is more to this than meets the eye: http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0610/39225.h...
Politico story this morning posted on Drudge- http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0610/39225.h...
"Rep. Steve Scalise (R-La.) wanted to fly 10 lawmakers down to the Gulf of Mexico to see the damage caused by BP’s gigantic oil spill first hand. House Democrats said no."
WTH? So now Reps need Dems' permission to go somewhere within the U.S., or any place else for that matter?
Listen to their crappy excuse: "Republicans want to be able to take trips using their office spending allowance. But Democrats have heard from the Department of Homeland Security, which has asked that Congress organize trips through committees of jurisdiction, to avoid having to cater to a ton of individual lawmakers in a disaster zone, Democratic aides say."
Committees of juris-my-diction? "Having to cater to a ton of individual lawmakers in a disaster zone"?
Smells like DICTATORSHIP. WABOS!
The only sites where you see criticism of the Great Pretenders handling of the Gulf spill are on the right side of the political spectrum. We all know that if this happened during Bush's term it would be front page news, and the lead on all news casts EVERY SINGLE DAY! It is almost incomprehensible how one sided the state-run media is. They have gone from cheer leaders of the left to another arm of the progressive movement.
On another note, I was channel surfing last night and came across a show called The Rachel Maddow Show. She must have had the night off cause it appeared that the kid from the Wonder Years was guest hosting. He sure does have a girly voice.
Did you plug the hole yet, daddy?
1. This is not incompetence from the Marxist regime
2. This is not “uncaring” from the Marxist regime
3. This is not due to the lack of common sense from the Marxist regime
The inaction is 100% due to the following factors:
1. Total control of the petroleum industry (nationalization)
2. Destruction of private property, thereby, obtaining the “right” to quarantine the area and STEAL personal property
3. Control individuals, their livelihoods, their families, etc.
4. The fundamental transformation of America
The main question here is…WILL THERE BE INACTION FROM THE PEOPLE TO VOTE THIS MARXIST REGIME OUT OF OFFICE BEGINNING THIS NOVEMBER???
It all started with the 2010 inauguration and its been down hill since then.
The great american idiot. Obama
" The EPA would not allow ships to skim oil from the water because they couldn’t get 100% of the oil out. They could only get 99% of the oil out. "
Only idiots let perfection stand in the way of improvement.
If Dante has any say-so, there ought to be a special place in hades for BP execs and Oilybama ditherers, where they will spend a long long time scrubbing each grain of beach sand clean, and capturing every particle of soot from the crude oil burn-offs.
The Reps should grow a set and hire a bus, and travel there if they want to go. Pay for the trip themselves.
Obama doesnt want to waste this crisis you know, cap an tax is what Obama is keeping his eye on, What a creep Obama is.
I cannot bring to words my utter contempt for this man and his administration, his followers, his folly, his foolish,
selfish, unabaited, hate of all things American. He disgusts me in a way that ……………. He simply appears to be evil.
President Obama, aka the Teflon Trotskyist, has named a Czar to clean up the Gulf mess, and all other Bush related maladies. Details are at:
http://spnheadlines.blogspot.com/2010/06/presiden...
The spill was an accident. The response, or lack thereof, was due to government inefficiency and the humongous size of a failed bureaucracy. And BO continues to grow this pig.
Environmental zealots need to go there too. It was they who forced drilling waaaaaay offshore, where it was more dificult and dangerous to do, and where disasters like this were harder to get to, address and clean up after.
Winner !
p.s. do a viral scan on your tv and wipe the screen after completion with germ-x.
However, CL, the Dutch skimmer ships that Obeyme turned down have an aggregate capacity in excess of the flow rate from the well. Booms and berms don't stop the leak, but they do at least keep the spill away from the shoreline. But the Bam & Ram Show have blocked every single effort in this direction- in order to see maximum crisis develop, ripe for demagoguery and exploitation.
As they say. The bigger they are, the harder they fall down.
I've figured it out! Obama is a "Predator." Think about it…he's got a Predator-style cloaking device that bends light, to camouflage him from conservative weapons of factual criticism, helmet-mounted laser sighting, with which to target his political enemies, and adjust his leftist vision to particular environments with foreign leaders, an arm sword and star-blade boomerang, with which to hack up the Constitution and Bill of Rights, and a shoulder-mounted plasma canon, to blow up the private sector economy.
All he needs is the dred locks.
As Arnie said, "You're one, ugly Mother-F%&$#@!"
So, those aren't tar balls on the beach. Just more of the poser's crap?
That's just nasty.
Does anyone else see that picture of Obama and think of the crazy NKorean articles where Kim Jung Il is lauded as he goes into the fields and looks at turnips?
Hard to believe, but reading that Financial Post article has knocked my opinion of O'Bama down another notch. I didn't think that was possible anymore.
And a couple of million boxes of pads with wings!!!
I have been telling anyone who will listen that BP will only work to clean up their mess as long as it's financially viable to do so. As soon as the costs exceed the value of the well or that their viability as a moneymaking entity is threatened, they will be gone. What will Maobama and his merry band of misfit minions do then?? Anyone? Chirp…chirp…chirp…
Obama Drama.
Has a ring to it, kind of like the dirty one that needs to be scrubbed up once a month or so before flushing again…
You might agree on this assessment- that if Obama really represents all of the Left including the green weenie earthmama crowd, he would have done everything in his power to have a skimmer fleet maintain a large distance between the slick front and our beaches. It would mean that BP has to take and process everything that the hole is giving us, irregardless of potential market glut and lowered fuel prices, and it would mean that BP would know that the priority is to contain and collect at the same time that it works on plugging that hole. Note that the bodacious EPA won't let you renew your license plate if your car is smoking just a tad out of bounds (in some areas), but when that big sooty snot cloud from the gulf burn-offs comes over our cities, the EPA will more likely hit us for tighter car emission standards rather than make BP stop doing the stupid. Now there's some first class Obamadrama for you.
A interviewee on Hannity last night- oil service industry veteran with over 40 yrs experience, verified my suspicion concerning the relief wells, which is that they are a diversion on the order of 'ignore that man behind the curtain' uselessness. "iffy" at best, indeed, as verified by the experts.
I think it should be, "There and Golf Again", kind of a play on "The Hobbitt", lol
AT the moment and in those days right after the disaster, a massive effort should have been mounted to keep the oil off shore as much as possible. That didn't happen and it is a shared blame of the government and the company involved.
I agree about the relief wells, there have been reports floating around the net that the well itself continues to fall apart, and if it degrades entirely before the relief wells are sunk, those wells have no chance to stop the flow.
Yep, and how quickly would the admin move regulatory heaven and earth to smooth the way for its union buddies who will still only actually work 10 minutes out of every hour.
The only holes he's plugging are Nancy Pelosi's and Harry Reid's!!
What is VERY important to our entire country is that the equipment is going to be moved from the Gulf of Mexico to other countries. Once it is moved, it will not be available anymore. The entire country is going to be faced with more dependency on foreign oil, and at what cost? DO NOT think this isn't being done deliberately.

Let's see if I understand this properly…. The EPA says we need to remove 99.99985 % of the oil before discharging the offal back into the Gulf. So if these skimmers CAN'T meet that standard then we just leave 100 % of the oil there ???? Is there ANYONE IN THIS ADMINISTRATION THAT HAS MORE THAN TWO BRAIN CELLS ? And whodafuch IS the EPA POS that handed down that order ? WORSE YET …..
The EPA POS has MORE authority than the oval office POS ? Could not the BIGGER POS have overruled the smaller POS to start the cleansing process ? This is gumment gone insane…..

Gentle Readers,
A little off-topic, but this is another example of well-intended environmental policies which actually harm the environment, and Pres. Obama's extremely poor Administration.
It is illegal to dump oil-contaminated water into the ocean. Therefore, if a skimmer removes 99% of the oil from skimmed surface water, and then discharges water that is 1% contaminated back into the ocean, irrespective the fact that it removed 99% of the oil THAT WAS ALREADY IN THE OCEAN it is violating EPA regulations.
In an emergency, the President, or the EPA Administrator can waive that rule and allow the skimmers to work. They didn't. That is poor administration. Certainly under normal circumstances we don't want ships dumping contaminated water, but this is ridiculous, and worse, harmful to the environment.
Often, well-intended environmental regulations are harmful to the environment, people and the economy.
Sincerely,
John Lepant Brighton CO
I'm a Tea Party Patriot and we should apologize to Britain and have the American tax payers pay for Britain's obligation. After all, they were drilling in OUR waters so it's OUR responsibility and Britain is such a nice country and we owe them because of what happened when we dumped their tea and polluted OUR waters a couple hundred years ago.
Thanks for taking it all in stride Britain and hope you can forgive us for making such a big deal about this.
Now…raise everybody else's taxes but mine!

It's a simple system. "Never let a crisis go to waste" as Rahm said. Allow the crisis to linger and fester, blame everyone else, don't work on a solution. Then when people become desperate- step in, because only big government can run things 'properly'. Punish the private sector, AND, above all, use the the situation to ram through more government takeover.
