Washington Set to Control Your Light Switch
by Tim SlagleEver since this continent was electrificated, Americans have been allowed to plug anything they want into their own electrical outlet.
The history of electricity is a biography of modernism. Originally intended just to light homes, electric power was soon used to run sewing machines, fans, teakettles, and toasters. According to Dr. Rachel P. Maines the fifth electrical appliance to be invented, was a device to treat hysteria (which is used in more homes today, than sewing machines and electric teakettles). Shortly after hysteria was cured, electric irons and vacuum cleaners became feasible.
Following the big war, came an explosion of things you could stick into an outlet: hair driers, electric drills, popcorn poppers, and television sets Not to mention, those goofy things that have a big belt and motor and are supposed to help you lose weight by jiggling your belly.
Today a home built only a generation ago is woefully inadequate for the number of appliances that need to find a plug. Hence, there has been a great market in power-strips. In my home office, (built in 1959) I actually have one outlet branching off into four different power-strips to handle all the appliances required of my profession.
Before the modern epoch, what you decided to plug in the privacy of your own home was an accepted civil right. If you’re willing to pay the bill, power it up. I have an old RCA refrigerator in my basement that uses far more electricity than a sleek new Korean import but it looks so cool, I don’t mind making my electric meter spin like a circular saw every time I restock it with beer.
A friend of mine, was so enamored with some of the waterfalls of Las Vegas that he built one in his back yard. It was a masterpiece of boulders and whitewater cascading across the 30-foot slope of his lakefront home. He used three high-powered electrical pumps to keep water churning down the hill at a spectacular rate of 25,000 gallons per hour. It took him months to build, but only one electric bill, to realize that it wasn’t a 24/7 attraction, and should only be activated on special occasions. The free market encourages conservation.
When President Bush signed The Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 we saw the first limits on which appliances we can use in our homes. (This bill is known by other names, such as the light bulb ban, or the 100 watt stockpiling act of 2012. It was spearheaded by GOP Rep. Fred Upton, who is this/close to assuming the Chairmanship of the Energy and Commerce Committee. That’s right, the GOP Rep who hates Thomas Edison is set to create energy policy for the whole country.) The law was necessary, because most Americans prefer incandescent bulbs. They are more aesthetically pleasing, and help heat your home in the winter. Most people believe the extra money spent is well worth the cost of electricity. After all, what is more economical than sitting in the dark?
The next step in Green won’t even require Congressional approval. The Department of Energy recently decided they have authority over appliances in your home. Energy Secretary Steven Chu recently issued five new energy efficiency standards for large appliances, and is reworking the policy to include ten new categories. According to Assistant Energy Secretary Cathy Zoi “…we have a mandate. Where we can actually just issue regulations and do market transformation.”
It is like we are moving backwards in time, seeing modern life outlawed one convenience at a time. Right now social engineers are busy working on “Smart Grid” technology. (The perennial question: if environmental choices are actually so intelligent, why do the marketers have to convince us, with names like “Smart Car,” and “Insight?”) The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 set aside $11 billion dollars to begin construction of that grid.
Smart Grid sounds harmless and modern, but it will be incredibly intrusive. Appliances in the future will have microchips installed; when you plug them in, they will handshake with the grid, and a central authority will determine whether that appliance deserves to get power or not. If a bureaucrat in Washington decides that it’s not hot enough for you to put on the air conditioner, your air conditioner will not work. If the Fed decides that Margaritas lead to too much trouble on Cinco de Mayo, all blenders can be disabled for the day.
They can also turn off radios, televisions and computers. In the era of electronic information, restricting the freedom of the press is as easy as turning off the light. The idea is to conserve power, but a Smart Government will be able to use the technology to retain power as well.
And as for my beautiful pink basement refrigerator, you can forget that. In fact every appliance that was built before the smart grid will eventually be forbidden power. Which means that once the “Smart” Grid is fully operational, everything in your house that requires a plug will probably need to be replaced –including your hysteria device (which will also leave a record the central office, every time it’s turned on).
There is no question that Air Conditioners in Washington DC will be functional year round, while those of us out in Red State American will deal with the limitations of windmills that are incapable of keeping the entire nation cool in the stagnant summer air.

DANG!!! I forgot, first action to end the problem of out of control government: Eliminate all air conditioning in Legislative, Executive and Judicial buildings in the DC area.

When Orwell wrote 1984, a computing machine was a far fetched futurist's dream. There are no futurists that I am aware of that predicted modern networking or the Internet.
Orwell's prognostications still apply, of course. If he foresaw modern telecom his book just have a more eerie resemblance of today.
Earlier this year I got a survey from my power company. One of the questions was, would I let the power company control my thermostat. There is only one problem with this stuff, the only time they would turn off your AC is during high demand periods. Which in Phoenix, Arizona is on days where the temp is over 100. Even worse when it's over 110.
And the power company is worried about public relations. They won't have to worry, keep their customers hot that long and they will go away. What's a few customers dieing from heat exhaustion, and their families lawyers showing up to have a nice long expensive talk with the power company.
Funny you mention that analogy…I am currently reading 1984 and am continuously made uneasy with the prognostications Orwell had in 1949 compared with what is becoming reality in 2010.
For example, the "Ministry of Plenty" already has told us that the stimulus plan would keep unemployment below 8% and I know we all enjoyed "Recovery Summer." This article, paired with previous articles about chips monitoring recycling bins and now the TSA "keeping us safe" at our airports, only shows that bigger government is inevitable if we "Prols" all sit back and let it happen.

Imagine what this will mean for people who are on dialysis or other plugged-in medical equipment. If they deem that you are too old to spend electricity on, then they could deny electricity to your life support.

I prefer fluorescent to incandescent bulbs. Particularly for aesthetics. Daylight fluorescents make all the difference for an interior. They are NOT burn-out proof. I've had several die on me before. (Though they don't burn out as frequently as incandescents.) And there is some argument that fluorescents are in the long run more detrimental to the environment.
However, the government shouldn't be forcing -everyone- to use them. I thought freedom of choice was a big thing here in America? Guess not anymore!

It is about CONTROL. Obamacare if fully implimented as intended will control what you eat and what you can do because everything can be tied to healthcare. With Cap and Trade they will control your thermostat and anything else that uses electricity. It is also about money, because what better way for the companies that make the gadgets to make it mandatory by law that we must use them.
If we slashed gubment jobs, we could save on lighting, paperwork and electricity. It would save on CO2 from commuting. Lets try that first.

Americans have no been "allowed", especially by government, to plug things in. I am so sick of that word being used as if we are subjects to be lorded over. Plugging something is itself not a civil right for the reason stated. The right exercised there is the one to contract. Exercise of a right itself cannot rightly cost money! Can you say poll tax?
Standards issued are fine so long as they are unenforceable recommendations. Government is tasked with promotion of this kind but it oversteps when it forces such a mandate, especially via penalty.
Nitpicking and semantics aside, the smart grid technology is among the most nefarious rights trampling efforts flying under the radar these days. The "green' movement has ridden a wave of support because Americans are a kindhearted bunch who often take things at face value without digging in to see what is underneath. Most look at conservation and efficiency as a good thing but the fact is that this kindness has been abused. A new movement is on the block though, to defend and conserve something else. It's called the Liberty movement and TEA Partiers have been marching to the beat of that conservative drum for a couple years now.
It took a couple decades to build the green scam. It peaked already and climate-gate was the real start of its undoing. The failure to pass 'Cap on Trade' demonstrates the falling apart of the scheme so now attempts will be made the way this article describes. Department and agency level rules will be issued as if they are directives right from Congress. This is the reason government is out of hand. These Departments and agencies, more specifically the authority delegated to them, are the problem. Congress after Congress has delegated away is authority in order to escape responsibility – especially in the responsibility arena.
The GOP majority House MUST MUST MUST defund enforcement arms of these departments because authority and responsibility of this nature is assigned to the Congress itself by the Constitution for these united States. Promote these ideas until the cows come home, that is just. Commanding directives via department and agency is anything but just. This madness has got to stop.
Now the climate worshipers want rationing in the developed countries.

There has never been an electrical device created that can't be altered to function as desired. If I can build a stereo from scratch, and I can, it should be a small matter to alter these "smart" appliances to function as needed. Thank God for that electronics engineering degree!
I am amazed that Democrats haven't figured this out. It's not like their hiding things anymore. We all know Obama wants total power, and total power is a Totalitarian Government. the funny part of this, goes back to the beginnings of electrical power. during the new deal, one of the big projects was the tva, and others to electrify america. the problem was, once the power was made availiable, americans had no use for electricity. so one of the propaganda items for fdr, was to put lights on his christmas tree at the whitehouse, and he asked americans to do the same. his reason was to try and get americans to use the electricity, so they can get billed for power use, so he could start getting the power plants paid for. now today, they want us to turn the lights out.

Depending on the frequency (Hz) of the "hand-shake" building a simple high band/low band filter would be easy. You could still draw power but the communication would be cut off.

I recently received a "friendly" report from my local government and power company, comparing detailed statistics about my power consumption to those of comparable neighbors, with suggestions on how to alter my power consumption behaviors. Useful information, but also kind of ominous considering these other ideas in the works. Big Brother is on the march.

There will always be a way to hack anything. All is not lost, if you look at the 11 billion allocated it is about (guess on my part, probably a low guess) 2 trillion short for implementation. The electric grid in this country is old and frail. Utility companies have not invested in the ifrastructure in decades. Sure they put bandaids in place but the grid is over worked. We need to keep pushing our conservative agenda to take back our God given rights and freedoms. Obama will be a distant bad memory long before the smart grid becomes reality. The biggest threat with smart grid is not from the federal gov't but from the actual utilities themselves. We start putting pressure on them and they will cave. Google "Smart Grid" and get a six pack for long research. Bad news everywhere on the fragile state of the grid.

Tell that to folks who already have a digital electric meter on their house. Hacks indeed! When it comes to utilities, many are already controlled by government anyway. Here in Illinois, a utility company like Ameren must get approval from government regarding the rates it charges, and that is not even speaking to municipally owned generation plants like the one in Springfield.
Selling them, buying them and owning them will be fine, using them will be made criminal. You know, like cigarettes, high end automobile stereo equipment and water bongs. That way, government gets the best of all worlds. They tax the crap out of production sales and purchase and then tax again by another name on the backside calling them fines……….
NEWS FLASH , YEAR: 2015; Mexican Authorities have arrested 300 Americans illegally crossing the border into Mexico. When asked, the Americans stated they wanted Freedom and a better life for their families and a future for their children as the Former United States can no longer provide work, housing or food and prevents them from improving themselves. a few months after moving into our home in NC (about 8 yrs ago) we received a letter from Duke Power thanking us for participating in their program allowing them to control/shut off our AC on hot days. WTF? the previous owner had signed up for it, but i politely informed Duke that i work at home and would NOT appreciate losing my AC at THEIR convenience and was promptly disconnected from the control box. but it was a sobering glimpse into Big Brother getting in bed with Big Power…
remember: Green Energy isn't about generating power, it's about exercising power!
Reading this I can see a few methods that can be implemented in controlling electrical power in the home.
The "new improved" fridge will not power up until it gets its handshake from central command, bypass-able.
OR the home breaker panel will become"smart" and only supply power to a given circuit when it sees a govt. approved appliance attached, or just each outlet will have this ability. Again bypass-able.
Where I see the problem at will be in building codes, forcing a person to adopt this, I could easily build a power panel using light sockets and properly sized fusible links in old lamp sockets, very much like they were once upon a time, and attempt to do so outside some city limit. But this could be thwarted by the simple monitoring of how much power I consume vs. my registered appliance load. That simple task is used today to catch suspected pot growers from their unusual power use from the metal halide lamps. Technology can and will always be hacked but the dam iron fist of enforcement is what they will use on us… I go to a few forums on off grid living, the generator of choice is home brew powered by a antique design Lister engine, not very long ago the EPA places a import ban on them. Seems the socialists in DC cant have people living independent of the system of control… What it comes down to is WE THE PEOPLE, need to get them under OUR control!
Those who hated government intrusion in their lives used to simply move further west. We have nowhere to go. Is it finally time to stand and fight the system? Or will this latest indignity also be accepted by the majority. Hell, we let them grope us already, whats a few degrees in the temperature of our houses?

SmartGrid along with SmartMeters also take away the bulk rate you now pay for electricity.
the only thing electrical I want to see obama in control of is the electric chair with him strapped in it. The 'on' button is rerouted and placed directly under an ever-increasing weight that he must hold in his hand. As soon as he drops it: bbbbzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzztbzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzt… all the lights in DC will dim for a few moments – saving energy at the same time he becomes lit up.

In a few years, don't be too surprised when they dictate that you 'recycle' your dishwater for the government mandated garden in your issued back yard, while confiscating your dish-washer and washing machine, but before they leave, they'll issue you a washboard so you and your family won't have to wear dirty government issued blue and white uniforms to the labor camps you'll be assigned to.

Intrusive govie will not be able to limit our use of candles, and for oil lamps unless they also limit our access to kerosene or similar oil…but neither lighting alternative will keep us warm in winter. People who do not have trees as a source of wood for their fireplaces will soon run out of furniture to burn. Yes, and the wheelbarrow bundles of U.S. currency worthless byb hyperinflation could be burned to keep warm. Yea, I thought Cap and Trade was going to do all this harm to our Country…instead, almost immediate by "executive" order or "czar" memo with energy "policy" destructive to us all. demoncrats are bent on self-destruction for us all.

In reality there were a few from the days of Da Vinci and as recent as the 30's, 40's and 50's where people envisioned mass communication via wires and radio. It was predicted in 1930 that massive portions of the population would get their news from electronic sources and not print.. It was also predicted that communications would be global and not just voice, but video and documents as well. I forget which worlds fair it was at when they introduced the video phone, but it was called the way to talk to family across the globe. We now have it with VOIP and Video conferencing. A cell phone is nothing more than a radio. So if you look at the past… many of the things we take for granted today where a dream then that many people thought would never happen.
Given everything that's going on, especially the subject matter of this article and that is all you have to offer?

The simple answer to your question is that the main stream media Knows what's going on, but chooses to not inform it's viewers, readers and listeners. Companies like GE, who stand to make billions off the green crap own too many media outlets. Guys like Bill Gates who has made billions of crappy software could care less because he could give away 95% of his money and still never want for anything. The idea that any of these morons care about the environment is a joke at best and a lie at worse. It's all about control and money.
They are talking about using these things in the Houston area. I believe the only reason we don't already have them, is the intial outlay cost is high. Justification put forward is that it saves $ on meter readers.

We will take up arms before we let the government mess with our modern appliances, especially SAHM's (stay at home moms ) I home school mine, and we run 2 loads a dishes a day. I guess if push comes to shove, I can do dishes and laundry in my pool? LOL I know that's some crazy stuff with the Feds dictating what we can do with our gardens. Buy a diesel generator and stockpile fuel. Diesel lasts a long long time in an underground bladder style tank. I understand your position PhilaMike. You and I have always agreed on things. I think that we have done a great job of blogging here to expose Obama and his Admin. and the socialist politicians. The publicity plus our voting and our "wipe out Election" has killed them!
They want to Fundamentally Transform America by allowing the invasion of those who either want to take US over or steal our taxes, or who want to impose their Sharia law, or try to keep Illegal Aliens here. Also Mike, just to make you feel good. Do you know how furious Obama is that our pesky voting and our pesky election stopped his reign of terror! Haha Haha. Smile. We did a lot of damage to these marxists in just one mid term election.
