Obama Needs Applause
by Tim SlagleLike most people I didn’t expect a lot from the President during his oval office speech. What I got was a whole new look at the Candidate in Chief.
The first thing I noticed during the speech: I had never seen such an empty desk before., It was so clear, you could see all the dents in the desk, from where the previous presidents actually did some work.
Much has been made about how President Obama didn’t really seem comfortable in the speech, that he looked more like a visiting college student who got to sit in the big chair for a couple minutes. It could explain why his poll numbers have dropped faster than a bowling ball out a campaign bus window.
It was also only a one tele-prompter speech. Usually he has a two tele-prompter setup so his head moves back and forth, like he’s watching a beer pong game.
It was highly uncomfortable to watch. His eyes were locked on the teleprompter, and his hands never stopped moving. You weren’t even sure the guy reading, was the same guy who was moving the hands. It was almost like watching the cookie monster give an oval office address.
I look at it a different way: from a comedian’s perspective. I’ve played some fairly hostile crowds during my years on the road. But the one kind of crowd I cannot tolerate is a small one. I think most comics will agree that one of the most terrifying places you can perform is to an empty room. (Of course since I’ve become big and famous, that rarely happens to me anymore.)
Every comic needs an audience. Those few minutes we’re on stage are the highlight of our week. It is the only time we feel alive, the only time we’re not consumed with self-doubt. Comics are narcissists. Comedy is much less a talent than a personality disorder. You wouldn’t see a lot of comics performing if there were a way that you could get self -worth out of a bottle—oh wait a minute, I think there is; and a lot of us do that as well.
The problem with the President’s speech, was that he doesn’t have any idea how to work without an audience. With no audience response, the timing of is left up to speculation. It’s why a lot of comics who destroy an audience, aren’t so good in acting the movies. Tuesday Night, we were watching President Dane Cook.
Had you inserted the applause lines into his speech, it would have made a lot more sense. For instance, the confusing line from the speech: “…Even if we’re unsure exactly what that looks like. Even if we don’t yet know precisely how to get there. We know we’ll get there.”
Should have gone: “…Even if we’re unsure exactly what that looks like. (applause) Even if we don’t yet know precisely how to get there. (applause) We know we’ll get there (big applause)
Even if we don’t know how we’ll get there? Yeah, that’s a great idea, let’s go to the Grand Canyon this summer, kids. I hope we’re driving in the right direction…” But with the applause added in, nobody would have noticed how silly it sounded.
The need for applause is not a really good quality in an administrator. It’s the difference between a strong leader and a tyrant. A leader will make rational choices, a guy working for applause is just the head of a mob. It’s one thing when that mob is just out for a good laugh and a cocktail, it’s another when they want Tony Hayward’s head on the end of a pitch fork..
And here’s the biggest problem with performers: We also cannot stand heckling. Most hecklers will be escorted out of the room. The performers expect that.

Good point. I barely recognize Obama with out the Hollywood Squares of Diversity stacked behind him and the crowd adoring him.
And how obvious is it that he does not work in The Oval Office. Had he even been in there before? It's as if he shuns the room deliberately.

Agreed. Obama's speeches are all constructed around the need to be perceived as larger than life itself. Speaking to, essentially, an empty room in such a dramatic fashion only highlights the empty suit.

Aside from the lack of an audience, there's also a lack of interest on the president's part. He doesn't think this is his fault, he doesn't think in the big scheme of things that the Gulf oil spill is very important — at least not compared to health care, cap & trade or card check — and that goes on top of a very laid-back, low-keyed personality that was essential to him winning over the swing voters back in 2008, who just were not going to elect a president who reminded them in any way, shape or form of former African-American Democratic presidential candidates like Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton.
That persona worked in 2008 when swing voters were all irked at Bush and Obama was packaged as the calm, wonkish answer to all of America's problems. But now that the same swing voters are seeing he doesn't have the answer to America's newest problem, that low-key style prevents Obama from faking when he doesn't really have a major interest in an issue and simply exposes his boredom and annoyance with the Gulf crisis taking up all his time (Bill Clinton's "I feel your pain" was the perfect example of the image that Democrats would like the president to be projecting, but he can't even pull that off, while doing things like going off to watch the Nationals Steven Strasburg pitch against "his" Chicago White Sox isn't exactly the best post-speech way to show voters you're 100 percent committed to getting this problem solved).

That was the most lame speech I have ever seen given from the Oval Office!! He showed NO confidence in anything he was saying except his push for cap and trade and green garbage!!
He has shown that he has no capacity for details. They bore him. he would rather leave the grunt work to the grunts. We saw that illustrated in the Healthcare debacle. He leaves the details up to everyone else. He can't be bothered. Principally because he has never had to actually do anything. He sees himself as above all the actual work of the office. That is why he appoints czars. He outsources his own job.

Obamao hates talking. When he does, more people learn (what we already knew) what he is all about.
THAT'S why he looks uncomfortable. He's a tyrant wanna-be. And the more he speaks, the more interviews he gives, it all comes out.
He would be higher in the polls if he just tweeted his proclamations, decrees, and illegal proclamations.

I don't think an applause track would have helped. Maybe a laugh track would do it. That line sounds vaguely like something Christopher Columbus might have said as he set out for India. Color me underwhelmed!

Oh, I forgot, the $20 billion which has been set aside as a result of Obama is a "shakedown". Well, in my opinion, we need more shakedowns like that to compensate the injured parties, who for the most part are our fellow citizens, from the gross negligence of a company which up to now has shown very little remorse.
It would of been fitting to see Bush and Clinton enter the room during speech and grab by the arms and drag him out of the office. His statement about sucking the oil up with a straw has "captured the worlds imagination".
They talk about the country being "center right", which is hard to define, it depends what one calls zero, my concern is that eventually you get more people that want a free ride than people that want to provide the ride.
At that point there is no turning around, until the system completely collapses, and begins rebuilding.
Even people that call themselves conservatives won't vote for politicians that talk about true spending cuts, listen to that Republican lady out in Nevada, she can't tell you what she would cut in government programs.

The same can be said for professional salesmen, and the disorders therein. The emotional rollercoasters, the ups and downs, the highs and lows. When they are successfully selling, they are on top of the world. When they hit a dry spell, they crash.

From the context of his speech, the incompetence is staggering: the attempted correlation between oil spill and global warming is ludicrous.

Off Topic, since I didn't watch his speech would never watch his speech and strongly believe the only good BHO is a BHO behind bars. Where does the Klutz in Chief get off determining a fine for BP when his own inaction far worsened the situation. As the spill unfolded we learned that this has happened before and it's been contained and/or cleaned up. He contacted James Cameron, that to me is a crime. When will the 40% of Americans holding on to this clown just give it up, come to the realization that just because he's Black doesn't mean he represents Black people. Come on people, the joke is over, the gag is old, now this is all becoming a tiresome game with children.

A cluttered desk is a sign of someone with many responsibilities and difficult tasks. It is an indication of trust emplaced on someone by those higher in authority.
One can only surmise what an empty desk means.

Sometimes I'm not able to catch his show as it's well past my nap time. There are approx. three shows I watch on Fox News; all the rest are boring, and Shep is a total sellout. As for Red Eye, I guess it's time to start recording Gutfeld; he's as funny as they come.
