Adult Swim: A Republic Is for Grown-ups
by Terrence Moore“The middle class is still treading water, while those aspiring to reach the middle class are doing everything they can to keep from drowning.”
—President Barack Obama, 8 September 2010
Bad metaphors bring bad policies. During the Great Depression Americans were told that “the pump” had to be “primed.” Despite twelve years of pump-priming, F. D. R. did not bring America out of the Depression. Bipartisan tax cuts targeted against Truman’s “Fair Deal” did.

Roosevelt had also used the metaphor of “war,” but that analogy was brought to perfection in L. B. J.’s “war on poverty.” The image is problematic. Marines going into a battle, for example, want to know, as they are locking and loading, who the “bad guys” are, that is, whom to shoot. Who were the bad guys in the “war on poverty”? The impoverished? The rich? When President Obama took office a year and a half ago, the universal call from the Democrats was to pass a stimulus package in order to “jump start” economy. Is the American economy really an old jalopy whose owner would not dare go out for a drive without taking his jumper cables? Yet that image was invoked countless times without a trace of irony as the government was moving in to take over parts of the auto industry.
If bad political metaphors are not exposed, bad policies invariably follow. That is why one of the most important moments in the debate over independence was when Thomas Paine required the American colonists to rethink the idea of Britain as the “mother country.” Does a mother send an army to attack her young? Do not children eventually grow up? In deciding to become a republic, Americans chose not to have a permanent parent overseeing their every move and aspiration.
Having failed to “jump start” the economy, President Obama and the Democrats are moving onto a new metaphor. The people are “drowning.” Now this is an indisputably powerful image. Who would not throw a “life line” to a person who is drowning? Only the most unfeeling capitalist on his mega yacht (about the size of John Kerry’s) would let someone go down in the treacherous waters of the present economy. When examined closely, though, the analogy reveals more than the president knows.
First, the president speaks of “classes”: the middle class, those who want to be in the middle class, and so on. Though we use this terminology all the time, there is nothing in the U. S. Constitution about classes being singled out or owed anything. “Welfare” is connected to the modifier “general,” which means everyone. The Bill of Rights likewise protects the rights of either “the people” or “persons,” not classes. But in Obama’s swimming pool, people are permanently tethered together. Single persons do not move through the water according to individual ability or effort and are not encouraged to do so.
Second, these classes are never characterized as being swimmers, but rather drowners. When, according to Obama, have the American people ever been able to swim? That is a question some astute reporter should ask him during a rare press conference. During the Great Depression under F. D. R.? During Johnson’s war on poverty that was never won? Democrats never mention Carter’s abysmal one term, which is too like the present. Even the Clinton era is problematic since a Republican Congress forced the Empathizer-in-Chief to do things he was not naturally inclined to do. And certainly not during the horrible Bush years when unemployment was significantly lower than it is now. The fact is, to President Obama, America is and will always be a nation of drowners.
Finally, in Pool Obama the good swimmers are made to feel guilty about their talents and forced to stop swimming and help out all the drowners, whether that help is wanted or not. Michael Phelps must give up his Olympic career in order to become an instructor at the local Y for tots and for adults who never learned to swim because they were never required to. It is not enough for a good swimmer to inspire others to be good swimmers. Nor can the folks in the pool be counted on to teach each other out of love or profit. The officious lifeguard-in-chief must direct everything.
Unfortunately, the rhetoric of drowning does not hold water. Thirty years ago this November the nation elected a man who had actually been a lifeguard in his youth. He spent his summers watching over and saving lives. Yet this lifeguard in his political career looked upon people as individuals, not as belonging to restrictive classes, and upon the nation as a place of swimmers, in fact good swimmers. All they needed to be given was minimal instruction—by parents and parts of civil society, not the government—and a chance. Compare the Reagan economy to the Obama economy to decide whom you would prefer as the lifeguard—not the parent—of the republic.

I guess that leaves out the Dumbocrats. Maybe they will all move to another country.
As with all tragedies and storms that effect this Country, it's the American people who come to the rescue every single time. And this won't be any different.
The American people will save this Country again, with the help of someone like Reagan.
Oh wouldn't that be nice?
" Thomas Paine required the American colonists to rethink the idea of Britain as the “mother country.”
Well now we have the Demon-rats wanting to take care of us and be our mommies….or should I say,
The Demon-rats want the folks that go to work, pay their taxes etc, to be babysitters and mommies to
their constituents!!!
I picture the girl at the beginning of Jaws, she was hanging onto the buoy,–Obama wants us to swim out and tether ourselves to that buoy in the hopes of saving that poor girl.
These idiots in power don't look at the past. They don't read history. They make it all up as they go.
Hey, we can start a new war on poverty. We can call it EDUCATION.

Allowing people to keep what they earn can fix darn near anything economically.
Those poor little union workers, gee I feel so sorry for them….not
Yes, we are floundering and drowning in excessive taxes, foreign debt, runaway spending, and socialist ideas pouring down on us by both the congress and administration. If we ever expect to walk again upon dry land, we have to rid ourselves of these ineffective life guards who are more interested in their sun tans than watching the pool, especially the chief life guard who spends more time on vacation than at the office.
Wishful thinking, but a great thought anyway!!….
Shhh don't wake me up from my dream…
LOL I was thinking the same thing.
So, Obama can't put together a decent metaphor? Why is anyone surprised? The guy stole his campaign slogan from a turd sandwich. If you don't believe watch Season 8 of South Park. There is an episode called "Douche and Turd" that originally aired back in 2004. PETA demands that South Park change its mascot from a cow to something else because having an animal as a mascot is demeaning to animals. So the students are given the option on voting for a new mascot: a douche or a turd sandwich.
I swear on my life, there is a scene in the episode where Cartman is parading down the street campaigning for the turd sandwich and says, "Turd sandwich brings the HOPE for the CHANGE."
I miss Ronnie.

Bad metaphors?
Would Warren Buffets comments, picked up by Wall Street, and the Obungle Administration of "Green Shoots" be classified as a "bad metaphor'?
Gary_K,
If only we could be so lucky!
As long as it is not Publick Edukashun…
Amen!
Me too!
Every Day…
Wouldn't we. Just imagine how much cleaner the air would be without all of their flatulence.
Expecting prosperity from government is like standing in a bucket and trying to lift yourself.
Mr. Moore,
ObaMao seems to hold views consistent with a no-experience, never held a job with P&L requirements, Never held a REAL job, Marxist Socialist Progressive over educated in everything except REAL life tool of George Soros.
What did you expect? Echo-nomic Strategery?
No, but the phrase "Bull Shit" comes to mind. No Bama is full of it I hear.
We must understand that Obama is just doing what is natural for him to do. He is a Marxist and Socialist. He is in the UPPER LEFT corner of the Unified Theory:
http://www.scribd.com/doc/37390494/00-Unified-The...
He will continue to do this since is whole being thinks in this manner. As you look through the theory, pretend to really believe this perspective and all the things they are doing will make sense…
This is why it will be such a battle to get the country back, we are moving from a Social Democratic system to a complete Socialistic and Marxist system. And a large portion of the nation believes this to be RIGHT!!!!
Publius
I honestly feel that a good portion of Obama voters were voting for a new Daddy, not a new President. Telling us to inflate our tires, telling us what we can & can't eat and what we shouldn't set our thermostats to, that's not governing.
ALSO: Obama doesn't look sinister in that picture. He just looks like he smelled a fart.
One of the first things you'll learn in any sort of aquatic rescue class is that many would-be rescuers are drowned themselves by the panicked, desparate and uncontrollable clutching of a person who perceives that they are drowning.
I wnt two one of them thar Publick Schols onse. I gottout of the turd grad, I was soo gud they let me stey tree times two.
No problem. Just pass a law banning gravity.
These knobs probably think "Center of Gravity" is a government department…or at least should be.
I find Barack's "concern" for the middle-class interesting considering that his mentor of 20 years, Rev. Jeremiah Wright, specifically called his followers to "reject middle-classness".
I don't believe that he even knows the meaning of the word drowning!! He has never had to be pulled out of the pool before…doubt seriously that he has ever had to do without anything!
Excellent article. The greatest idea of the promise of America is that no matter where you come from (ie., economically or socially), an individual has the opportunity to move beyond the boundaries of class level. Try that in England or continental Europe and see how far you get.
What I see right now is king zero out on the branch of a tall tree yelling to his minion progressives to stop cutting (they have a saw and are cutting the branch he is on). The rest of us are cheering on the tea party standing on the ground as the tea party is cutting down the whole tree.
Bad metaphors?
Whilst the Chosen One is doing all of His Bobbing and Weaving, Shuckin' and Jivin' version of the Kenyan Kenesian Shuffle, we who are left on the Plantation are reduced to eating collards and poke-salad.
How's that for a bad metaphor?
Any thought who the next Reagan might be?
From where I sit, I just don't see one except possibly Paul Ryan whom the party powers have deemed "too young to lead" so he's relegated to "PET REFORMER" status and trotted around the economic ring whenever their collective economic wisdom is challenged.
To me, that's not leadership. It's a Ringling Bingling Barnum and Whozits circus act…entertaining, but at the end of the show, nothing has really changed in concrete terms.
I see no Reagans emerging. Only "not Pelosi, not Reid" party power players vying for top dog status. Sigh…
Thats good. LOL
Telling us to inflate our tires, telling us what we can & can't eat and what we shouldn't set our thermostats to
It's a Jimmah do-over, with even less style. Hard to imagine, I know, but apparently the style scale can go negative.
No….no thoughts here either. And the search continues.
Don't leave out one of the ladies, they are coming onto their own now and getting better and better.

LMAO – still laughing. Yes, I think a Soros funded group has appointed the zsar of the Center for control of Gravity – this is in the department of the interior.
LOL – from 2011 on, all gravity will be taxed at a rate of $1 per kg mass per year for all non-muslim, non-union, white business owners that make more than $200k a year unless you drive a prius.
He struck me as a dude afraid of water anyway.
Na he is yelling keep sawing ITS WORKING ….I PROMISE
Well said Ezra!
Drowning? Brings back memories of Water Survival Training that I went through years ago in the Marines.
They taught us how to save someone who is drowning. This is what we were taught (in summary).
Rule #1:
If you do something that puts you at risk of also drowning, you have now not only lost the chance to save them; but you have drowned yourself
Rule # 2
You must save the 'drownee' on your own terms.
We were taught that often, someone who is drowning panics. They will try to grab on to you. They may try to clasp their arms around your neck. Allowing this to happen puts you in jeopardy of them pulling you under with them..
Rule #3
Push the 'drownee' away from you. You want to be able to grasp them from behind so YOU can control them and pull them to safety. Allowing them to come to you and dictate the rescue will lead to your being brought under with them
These seem like relevent points if the President wants to use the drowning analogy.
And after the undereducated "graduate" from public high school through the miracle of "social promotion," they are fooled into believing they are prepared to begin college. "Fortunately," many can choose academic paths where the only real test is the ability to regurgitate the Marxist dogma they're fed by their professors.
Sheepskin, indeed.
Mr. Moore,
"Bad metaphors bring bad policies."
Ahem… Bad Political schools of thought (Socialism, Marxism, Progressivism, et al) bring about policies that are destructive to lives, economic stability, freedom, et al.
EJECT All Progressives in all parties! ELECT Only Real Conservatives!
AMEN RW&J!!!!
Well Said!
"SHEEPskin, indeed. " Amen!
I agree. Many, far too many, spend their first year or more in collage learning what they should have in high school. Sad really.
They also tend to believe they are ready for a VP gig, or at minimum "management"…

Thank you for your service.
I got an idea: Why don't we let people build and prime their own pumps?
We are always having rammed down our throats "the poor" "the poor", unless you where born with rich parents and a silver spoon in your mouth, we all were basically poor at one time when we first left home to go out into the world to start out own lives! Whatever became of the "ladder of life" where you start out down at the bottom and work your way up the ladder? Whenever we hear sick and twisted people like this usurper Obama and other dems cry out "the poor" it's like they are always talking about the same people, people who by their own choice are stagnant and aren't doing things to make themselves move up that ladder! If you are poor by choice you don't deserve any help from those who are working hard to climb that ladder!
aye aye sir
Amen Brudder!
Thats true, the problem is attitude and respect.
There is nothing in the U. S. Constitution about classes being singled out or owed anything.
A dream is a wish your heart makes, when you are fast asleep.
I have noticed that under Reagan and the Bushs Presidency, the American people were referred to has citizens and individuals. Under Obama, we have become "workers", the Rich, and the "government workers". Hmmmmmm….. where have I heard those terms used on a regular basis……Hmmmm Oh ya, USSR, Cuba, China, and on and on and on in all those enlightened worker paradise places.
That's exactly right. Rescuers are instructed to wait for the endangered to pass out and go limp, from lack of energy or oxygen.
Of course, this may be exactly 0b*ma's strategy, too.
And are wearing a PFD (personal flotation device) which is government speak for life vest.
All of this while Obama and the democrats are filling their pockets at the taxpayers expense. Look at the millions Obama is making from a book. Would that have happened if he had not hood winked the voter? No! Rangel, Waters, Pelosi and many others with their special interest groups and other contributors. Every politician is getting rich and we are sucking wind. Damn them all! Vote them into oblivion.
Or secede. I would LOVE for the NE coast and west coast to secede. Wher do you think businesses will go to?
Perhaps we can forcibly re-locate them overseas. I know they've OPENLY considered that option for conservative "jokingly".
Why do you think liberals oppose school vouchers and holding teachers accountable? Because if the US public truly did become educated and informed through means other than state propaganda, they lose their voter base. The only way they keep votes is through racism, misinformation, and keeping people in permanent poverty and telling them the gov't is the answer when we all know it's the problem.
Looks like a troll didn't like our comments.
Well, the douche baggers are a collection of turd sandwhiches. Seems only appropriate they adopt the slogan as well.
Gary,
Yes, plus… Lack of work ethic, lack of results orientation, lack of customer orientation, lack of knowledge, lack of decent ethics, lack of morals, and in general an inability to find their a$$ with both hands.
Gee, all the things they are supposed to learn at home.
Gary,
Yet another reason why I am Home Schooling my kids!
Good for you, your children will be well educated.
she was hanging onto the buoy for dear life after having been driven into it by the villian.
She could be a metaphor for America (or at least conservative America), minding her own business only to be eaten alive.
That is the plan sir!
South Park is so accurate in its portrayal of pop culture. I love how they skewer libs by making fun of their misuse of language, ie, abortion clinics in South Park are outlets of Unplanned Parenthood, LOL!
My favorite episode is probably Butt Out, where Rob Reiner cannot get out of his limo without being greased up with handfuls of butter as he is on his way to warn everyone of the dangers of second hand smoke……
i wouldnt throw a life to a liberal.i would watch them drown and that would be a public service
The buoy is government rule and regulation or anchor, and the shark is what happens to the overly regulated
Maybe O Dumbo's dad should have thrown him in the pool a few times to see what it's like to sink or swim… Maybe he would have a little respect for "self preservation"….
if moochelles fat ass gets any fatter, alot of people could latch on to the ugly bith and float to safety…………obviously she is driving up food prices, she's eating everything in sight
It's fascinating how a dress shoe magically appears in Uhhhbama's mouth every time he comes up with another one of these lame-ass metaphors, isn't it?
Tea Party tsunami? Will Repubs blow it? Find out in this podcast: http://www.cashbeechcroft.podomatic.com
Your survival guide to the Obama regime.
I've used a similar analogy trying to explain the problems of government dependency to clueless lib friends. My analogy is: there are two runners. One is able to do the 100 yard dash in 7 seconds. The other is only just starting out but wants to be able to match the first runner's time. If the second runner's a conservative, he or she will come up with a fitness regime that helps them reach their goal. Maybe they invent some new kind of racing shoe or diet plan that helps all racers improve their time. Whether they hit 7 seconds or not, they've improved their lives and maybe the lives of other people, too.
if the second runner's a liberal, he or she covets the first runner's shoes, funding, and physique. They pressure the local runner's association to subsidize new Nikes for everyone. They demand that things like "1st Place" and "Last Place" be banned from competition because it wounds their self-esteem. When all else fails and they still can't hit 7 seconds, they demand the state cut off one of the first runner's legs in the interests of "fairness." In the end you're left with a good runner who can't run, a bad runner who never could, and a whole bunch of wasted sneakers.
Wright rejects "middle-classness" himself. Only the best for him. He lives in a mansion in a gated-community of Chicago. Obviously being a hatemongering racist pimp pays very well.
The hag Frances Fox Piven is now a paid advisor to Obamalamadingdong. We are financing our own demise. Her photo should be plastered everywhere and she should be mocked and shunned wherever she goes.
Self reliance, responsibility words the left bans from their vocabulary.
Without responsibility you will have no rights.
Great blog, Mr. Moore. Very astute observations.
So do I. Can we maybe clone him?
It's simplistic to think that a President can fix this. We need everyone to do their part, and not put their hopes in some talking head. Saving this Country and our Rights starts and ends with you.
well how's that HOAX and CHAINS werkin'?????
heeeey let me axe you….how do you break a wedding band???? all the HALFRICAN does is shoot hoops, cheat at golf, fugg up the economy…I'll axe you a'gin how do you break a wedding band???????
John Kerry would want a fee from the government for every drowning person he saved with his yacht…ya know to pay for those horrible taxes he has to pay on it.
Me, too!
I miss the way he'd make libs look like drooling idiots. But he did it with class and gentle humor, not name-calling and snarking like Obooby does….
Interesting observation!
The debt is the ocean that we are all drowning in LOL…I can hear the bell on the buoy and the music playing.
Nobody is paying attention to the,"Marxist Stream Media" anymore. They will find that they will meet the same end as the Progressive,Marxist, Liberal politicians in Washington today. It is the peoples turn to remind Washington who the boss really is. That is every American voter. As Donald Trump has made famous,"Your fired".
"Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere"
Martin Luther King, Jr.
Excellent link…..great teaching tool.
Confusion the terms Progressive – Liberal – Conservative – Right and Left creates, are purposely disseminated red herrings.
The Unified Theory places a person neatly into a philosophical quadrant with no wiggle room. Jargon and the Alinskyite adoption of your opponents language will not work in disguising a nefarious social engineering agenda.
A placement questionnaire/test would also be a great teaching tool.
Obama is using Rule #3… first sentence only.
Thanks for the heads up. She's a very dangerous person. If she's advising Oblah-blah, then we know he's got to be using their overwhelm the system strategy. For that very reason, I don't see any hope for this economy to come back while he's in office, but instead to stay in constant, daily turmoil.
Written November 2008…read this and weep:
One really has to ask the obvious question: If Obama’s economic policies work so well, why isn’t Detroit a paradise?
In 1950, America produced 51% of the GNP for the entire world. Of that production, roughly 70% took place in the eight states surrounding the Great Lakes: Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York.
The productive capability of this small area of earth staggers the imagination. Virtually everything that rebuilt the industrial bases of Europe and Japan came from those eight states. Cars, planes, electronics, machine tools, consumer goods, generators, concrete – any conceivable item manufactured by industrial humanity poured out this tiny region and enriched the world. The region shone with widespread prosperity. People migrated from the South and West to work in these Herculean engines of industry.
The wealth, power and economic dominance of the region at the time cannot be overstated. Nothing like it has existed in human history.
Yet, a mere 30 years later, by 1980, we called that area the “rustbelt” and it became synonymous with joblessness, collapsing cities, high crime, failing schools and general hopelessness.
What the hell happened?
Obama happened.
Of course, not Obama personally but rather the same ideas that Obama espouses. What those ideas did to the Great Lakes states, they can do to the entire country.
What did they do wrong?
First, unions: Without any serious economic competition, unions could force virtually any salary, benefits and pensions they wished from manufactures. Worse, however, they could set work rules and conditions, effectively dictating the organization of a business and what technology, processes and methods it used. Since increasing productivity, by definition, means doing more work with fewer people, unions froze companies into the methods used in the mid-1950s and refused to let them adapt. Companies rode high for over 15 years, but by the late ’60s they faced increasing competition and needed to change and adapt. The unions blocked this.
In the end, however, strong widespread unions turned out for workers to be merely a case of robbing Peter to pay Paul. Unions got workers in factories better wages, but the people who built the workers’ houses, cars, consumer goods and stocked their groceries also had strong unions and the price of everything went up. Strong public-sector unions kept taxes high and public productivity low, so workers’ taxes went up. By the time they paid all the increased cost of union labor in everything they consumed, the unions gave them little if any real increases in income.
Second, invasive government: People who grew up during the New Deal and WWII believed that government could solve almost any problem, and they supported high taxes so that government could fix society. Unfortunately, the supposed benefits of an expansive state, good schools, solid public infrastructure, low crime, etc. failed to materialize while zoning and land-use restrictions drove up housing cost and taxes and crime destroyed small businesses. Strong public-sector unions blocked tax cuts and reforms that could have saved them.
By the early ’70s the states that once served as the industrial engine for the entire planet began to fall apart. Then came double-digit inflation and the energy crisis (both caused by leftist policies). By 1980, the industrial heartland of America lay in virtual ruins. People called it the “rustbelt” in analogy to the “dustbowl” of the Great Depressions. Even today, nearly 30 years later, the region lags behind the rest of the country in job creation and is steadily losing population to internal migration.
It can happen just that fast. A worker who entered the factories in 1950 at the age of 25 saw 20 good years before things looked bad. At 45 he saw repeated layoffs, and by 55 he was out of a job and his children had little hope of finding one.
Obama clearly plans to try to extend the rustbelt model to the rest of the country. “Card check” will let unions use intimidation to control workers. High taxes on capital gains will slow investment. Environmental regulation will starve workplaces of electricity and mandate inefficient modes of production. Great new bureaucracies will arise to restrain the freedom and creativity of the people.
Obama has no concept of business as a creative and experimental endeavor. On some deep unconscious level, he assumes that material wealth is something akin to a natural phenomenon for which no group of humans can take credit. Therefore, he sees distribution as the only serious economic issue and ignores how politics interferes with the actual process of wealth creation.
We may soon be living in a repeat of ’70s and looking back at the years 1984-2007 as a golden era.
They read the revised Liberal History..
No matter what kind of pretty package poison comes in, it will still kill you. Obama brings the poison of failed ideology and shoves it down our throats. He hates this country and ignores what a force for good we have been. He is a negative man with evil intentions.
JeffersonAdams,
Yes, this is some of the next steps with this tool.
Ultimately we would like to have a competency test or certification in place that people take.
Politicians and citizens, such that if one took the test they at least would have the language AND could be held accountable to their language and voting record. In short, if you violate the principles your competency or certification would be pulled.
