Obama SOTU: We’ve Heard this Song Before
by Rep. Tom McClintock (R–CA)After President Clinton took a drubbing from voters in the 1994 Congressional election, he realized his policies weren’t working. He promptly declared, “The era of big government is over,” and he then went about making good on that declaration:
• He reduced spending by a miraculous 3 1/2 percent of GDP.
• He attacked entitlement spending and abolished the ballooning open-ended welfare system.
• He signed what amounted to the biggest capital gains tax cut in American history.
• He delivered the only four budget surpluses in four decades.
• And he produced a period of prolonged economic expansion.
President Obama faced a similar cross-road as he delivered his fourth State of the Union Address to Congress. If he had followed the example of his successful Democratic predecessor, he could have redeemed his presidency, revived the economy and rallied the country.
Instead, he succumbed to the basic ingredient of hubris: that the more we invest in our mistakes, the less willing we are to correct them.
Instead, his fourth State of the Union Address was indistinguishable from the three before it – the same big government bromides that have utterly failed to revive the economy while squandering trillions of dollars of the nation’s wealth.
For two full years, lopsided Democratic majorities in Congress responded to eerily similar addresses by giving him everything he asked for, including the biggest single spending bill in history that he promised would keep the unemployment rate under eight percent.
His fourth State of the Union speech came on the 35th consecutive month of unemployment rates over eight percent — unemployment rates that would be still higher except that millions of Americans have simply given up looking for work and therefore are no longer counted among the unemployed. Indeed, fewer Americans are working today than on Inauguration day, 2009.
In pursuing these policies, he has piled up as much debt in three years as the nation acquired from the first day of the George Washington administration to the last day of the George H. W. Bush administration and destroyed America’s Triple-A credit rating.
True, Mr. Obama inherited a terrible mess caused by his predecessor. George W. Bush went on his own spending and borrowing binge to “stimulate” the economy. He approved the biggest expansion of entitlement spending since the Great Society. He intervened in the housing market by guaranteeing that struggling taxpayers would bail out banks from their bad decisions. He ran up crippling budget deficits (that now seem quaint by today’s standards).
Yet instead of reversing these disastrous policies, Barack Obama has spent the last three years doubling down on them, and he showed no interest in changing course in the final year of his term.
Ronald Reagan inherited an economy plagued by double-digit unemployment, double-digit inflation, mile-long lines around gas stations and interest rates at 21 ½ percent. He told the country, “In this present crisis, government is not the solution to our problem — government IS the problem.”
Reagan reduced the tax and regulatory burdens that were crushing the economy and produced a period of prolonged economic expansion and prosperity. Former Senator Phil Gramm recently estimated that if the economy under Obama tracked as it had under Reagan, 15.7 million more Americans would be working today and per capita income would be over $4,000 higher than it is today.
Nor was Reagan a pioneer. Warren Harding, Harry Truman and John F. Kennedy, pursued similar policies and produced similar results.
If Barack Obama had presented a comparable vision, he would have had the enthusiastic support of the Republican majority in the House and a year from now could claim the mantle of leadership in putting the nation back on the road to prosperity. Instead, what he prescribed is guaranteed to produce gridlock, finger-pointing and sniping, as his combative tone clearly signaled is his intention.
That’s a tragic waste of an entire crucial year when we could be implementing policies to relieve our economy of the burdens that are crushing it – just as a Democratic President working with a Republican Congress did during the Clinton years.
Whittier’s words haunt the country in the aftermath of this lost opportunity: “Of all sad words of tongue or pen, the saddest are these: ‘it might have been.’”

Outstanding!
OT: Chris Matthews just aired a segment about Newt talking about Saul Alinsky, Mattews say's that he doesn't think anyone knows who Alinsky is. Whatever you think about Newt ya gotta like MSM having to address Alinsky….of course Chris and his panel feigned shock at the prospect of Obama being compared to Alinsky.
I am sure B-TV will have plenty of clips upcoming–including Obama at the black board teaching Alinsky, a photo that was originally found on his campaign website back in 2008 or so–until it was scrubbed after Glenn Beck aired it on his show.
Mr. McClintock, while I won't use my name in here, we have spoken several times in the past two years. I wanted to thank you for all you do here in CA and hopefully, if we can obtain a large enough turnout this year to combat the fraud vote, we will get a Conservative government in CA once again.
That being said, Obama is a narcissistic megalomaniac, he is incapable of admitting fault, error or take accountability for any of his failed policies. He is incapable of straying one inch from his Fascist agenda. It's either because of his narcissism, or Soros won't let him. He won't govern from the middle, he won't admit error.
Obama, simply put, would rather go full "scorched earth" if he cannot continue his agenda.
You didn't hear about Alinsky from the Romney camp.
Tom.. If you had been elected governator 10 years ago, we would
not be in the fix we're in..
Thanks for all you do..
Center mass. Nice shot!
Hat tip to Mr.McClintock! I am proud to have you as my adopted congressman her in California. You are one of the few SOLID Conservatives in DC, and coincidentally from this hole that used to be known as the Golden State. Keep up the good work. Know there is a handful of us out here that appreciate your leadership. If we had 434 more like you, we would be in much better shape.
Like Alan Greenspan said, "Bill Clinton was the best Republican President we've had in a while."
Even if you don't agree with that, the point of course is that a Democrat actually cut a budget etc for once.
If "he doesn't think anyone knows who Alinsky is" it's because he and his merry band of marxist minions have done everything in their power to keep the public from finding out.
Mr. McClintock, I join with the comments above, we conservatives in California are working hard to get others to join you in your efforts, but I must admit, it is tough going in this State. I honestly think we've reached the de Tocqueville's tipping point, but we will keep oaring on. You are beloved by the TEA Partiers in this State. We are very worried about the future of the Republican Party, however. There's not that many of us producers left, and we cannot pay more than we do now, so Gov. Brown is going to drive even more business out of State, myself included, if the 51% vote this fall for higher taxes.
Thanks, it's pretty easy to hit a mountain from 5' with a scatter gun.
Looks like a couple of states are going to decide (with help from the lovely MSM) who our candidate is going to be. Nothing like living in the 1870's eh?
Many liberals are just like him in the respect that they will never admit responsiblity for their actions when proven erroneous. Lets hope those with enough brain cells for a small amount of independant thought will at least admit to themselves barry sore-toe is an utter and complete failure for America before voting in November.
Obama is no Clinton. He truly believes in big government and the consolidation of power in a centralized government. The only anecdote is extraction.
Yep… Just posted to Whats_up about a few states that get to "call" elections for the rest of us. That ain't workin. We have got to do something about that. I would favor either the low delegate states going first or the high ones (not sure which yet). All I know is… this is a big wide load of it.
The problem is that sooner, rather than later, the oft repeated lie will be believed.
True dat, and now that Newt brings it up on a daily bases they are now moving from ignoring mode to total distortion mode.
"President Obama faced a similar cross-road as he delivered his
fourthfinal State of the Union Address to Congress."Makes me feel better to read it that way…
Yes, and it is terribly out of tune.
How about just –
"Obama – STFU we have heard all your lies before"
?
Congressman McClintock,
It has been my pleasure voting for you, listening to your telephone town halls, and attending your regular town hall meetings here in your district.
Will you please seriously entertain the idea of running for POTUS?
America NEEDS YOUR LEADERSHIP SO BADLY IT HURTS.
Great job as always on your latest post here at the BG site!
signed,
one of your faithful 4th district fans
Pounds sand Obama and go back to what ever country your are really from. We don't want you here anymore!
Old song?
Second verse same as the first.
Well written piece of truth. A lot to think on there.
Thank you.
Stop fighting the Obama in your little brain and come back to objective reality. You people are all completey insane.
And learn what a fascist is too. Maybe look in a mirror?
"Mattews say's that he doesn't think anyone knows who Alinsky is."
Watch Jesse Water's/Jay Leno man on the street interviews most people don't even know who Joe biden is.
Obama is a Fascist. You are just an idiot, and most likely an uneducated one who makes $8.00 an hour from one of Soros's media enterprises.
Your momma must be so proud. I can hear her in the backgound "Johnnie………come in here and look at the size of this crap I just took".
I have a complaint
Andrew Breitbart is advertising this at the site at BreitbartTV http://www.barackobama.com/obama-for-america-2012...
Granted, it is his site, and it is his business, but it just rubs me the wrong way.
I think it is hypocritical.
Garbage in, Garbage out.
Our Xident is a Marxist/Socialist and his governance is completely dedicated towards destroying our Republic.
Along the way he has incorporated certain jihadist principles as well
That was the first real laugh I have had all day.
Thank you.
McClintock and the few sane Californians left are fighting the same fight the rest of the country will have in 2013, whether Obama wins or not.
Because the the marxists who have taken over the Democratic party will never stop expanding the government, siezing more power for themselves, stealing more and more of OUR money and calling it theirs by right, and telling us more and more how we are supposed to eat, think, and live. All in the name of "fairness" of course.
How long America? How long? How much more of this crap are we going to take, the next election? The next year? If not not then, when?
Obama must be removed. Soon.
You said, "He (Bush) intervened in the housing market by guaranteeing that struggling taxpayers would bail out banks from their bad decisions." Bush didn't just "bail out" the banks from their bad decisions, he FORCED the banks to make those bad decisions. Bush encouraged, cajoled, required, using threats of lawsuits, banks to give insanely bad loans to third-world savages who wouldn't have qualified for a pre-paid credit card. Once again White Americans were forced to underwrite Blacks and Mexicans who inevitably failed to repay their loans that they shouldn't have been able to qualify for in the first place. The government set the rules for this ridiculous piece of criminal social engineering. Of course Obonzo is continuing these insane policies. He doesn't care if they ruin the economy. Obonzo is literally the enemy of his own country. He is an evil, affirmative-action parasite.
Petro, you are exactly right about Mr. McClintock he is straight forward, honest, and a true patriot for conservatism. Which is why he will not last much longer in California. As for Obama I cannot wait until he is tossed in with our other great failure of my generation Jimmy Carter.
While I do have optimism over tossing out Obama, your dream about a conservative California government is about as likely as Ronnie coming back from the grave. Three things tell you all you need to know about that possibility. ( Feinstein, Boxer, and Brown ) I dare anyone across the country to find a more worthless threesome yet they have been elected repeatedly.
I also share the same state but understand that we already have lost our chance to turn the state around. Because of the failed policies and continued compromises of Rhino's who have destroyed most of the Republican part we are now on path for certain bankrupcty.
In short order the Democrats will have the votes to raise taxes at will with a 2/3 majority and we as taxpayers will be toast. Welcome SB 653, attacks on Prop.13 and the hits will never stop until we hit the rocks.
"Instead, he succumbed to the basic ingredient of hubris: that the more we invest in our mistakes, the less willing we are to correct them."
Nonsense.
Obama knows what he is doing: his calculations are ALL in terms of what he can get away with doing. But typical of a politician author to try and hide this simple thing: Do. Not. Trust. The Bastards.
You and your kind FEED of that basic trust assigned to you: the vague hope that you are not self-serving, sociopathic, sub-human, filth.
It's all the same
Only the names will change
Everyday
It seems we're wastin' away
So does Clinton. It's just a matter of degree.
I have the opposite feeling, unbiased. I think there's a better chance of a conservative CA than Obama getting beat with one of The Four Stooges as nominee
I went back to the SOTU in 2010. Here's Obama's list of programs and enhancements, all of which cost money we didn’t have (but when has that ever stopped a liberal?). The list includes:
· New small business loans
· Small business tax credit
· No capital gains tax on small business development
· Tax incentives on plants and equipment
· Infrastructure investment
· Clean energy facilities
· Energy rebates
· Increase taxes to companies with overseas employees
· Tax breaks for US job creation
· Banking reform – inform bank customers
· Research funding
· Nuclear power plants
· Offshore drilling
· Biofuels
· Clean coal
· Climate change laws
· Increase exports
· More trade deals
· School reform
· Government college loan
· Tuition tax credits
· More Pell grants
· Limit repayment of school loans 10% 10 years
· Double child care credit
· IRAs for all
· More home refinancing
· Health care reform
· Foreign aid for AIDS
· Bioterror defense
· Civil rights prosecution
· Immigration enforcement
Obama is a one trick Dunce.
Has anyone is the establishment RNC given any credence to Kevin Freeman's theory of financial terrorism causing the 2008 crash? He presents a wonderful argument, which, if true, could expose those terrorists and prevent them from really crashing our Republic. Keep up the good work. I wish we had more like you in the RNC. Maybe, I could continue to be a Republican if they really cared about our Republic.
"He delivered the only four budget surpluses in four decades.
And he produced a period of prolonged economic expansion."
I would suggest that it was the American people at work that produced these results. Clinton's role was to keep his hands out of their affairs and allow them to succeed. Can we please stop debating the false premise of which president will "create" the most jobs?
Government does not "create" or "produce" anything; its only real talent is for destruction – that's why armies are always run by governments. Fundamentally, what government destroys is freedom: government controls, government forbids, it compels, regulates, confiscates, restricts, outlaws…government is organized force brought to bear against people. Small government is less destructive to people than large government, that's all.
