The Democrats’ Alice-in-Wonderland Tax Guide
by Thomas Del BeccaroIf something stays the same, has it been cut? The answer is a resounding YES in the Alice-in-Wonderland world of Demo-nomics. Of course, I am speaking of the Democrats’ claims that Republicans are holding middle class tax cuts hostage when the issue really is whether certain tax rates will remain the same or go up. Such folly is, to be generous, not the only upside down element of Demo-nomics under which we vassals must toil. Here is your guide to some of the more prevalent illusions . . .

1. Extending the current rates = a Tax Cut. It is not so much a subtle tactic by the Democrats to frame the discussion by claiming that the Republicans are holding middle class tax cuts hostage. Remember that he who frames the argument often wins the argument. The literal and basic premise of this Demo-nomics subtlety is that the rates, by all rights, should be higher. By pedaling their line of argument, however, the status quo becomes change - and it is they who are heroes for cutting them again from where they think ”should” be.
In truth, who is to say tax rates should be this high? After all, when the income tax was ushered in by Democrat Woodrow Wilson the top rate was only 7%. Shouldn’t the question be: Why are we keeping rates so very high? Obviously not in the world of Demo-nomics.
2. Tax Cuts Are A “Windfall” for the Rich. This too is a brilliant job by the Democrats of framing the issue. According to Merriam-Webster’s online dictionary, “windfall” is defined as “an unexpected, unearned, or sudden gain or advantage.” Incredibly, so pervasive is this canard that one of the examples Websters uses for the word windfall is: “They received a windfall because of the tax cuts.” Of course, in 99%.9 of the cases, a tax is a government taking of money you have earned and probably not so suddenly but after a year of hard work. A tax rate cut, therefore, does not result in a gain – what it really represents a smaller loss for you – just not in the world of Demo-nomics.
3. Tax Cuts “Cost” the Government Money. According to Obama in Wonderland, not extending the tax cuts to the wealthy – read raising taxes – “would knock hundreds of billions of dollars off the cost of extending the cuts.” This is a favorite tax folly of the Democrats, i.e. that tax cuts COST the government money. Perilously referencing Merriam-Webster’s online dictionary again, we find that the definition of a “tax” to be: “a charge usually of money imposed by authority on persons or property for public purposes.” As you can see, the charge that is imposed is imposed ON US and therefore COSTS US – not the government. If they are charging us less it means that it is costing us less – it does not cost them at all – not to mention that lower rates foster higher economic activity and, therefore, greater revenue.
By now, you have seen the main thrust of Demo-nomics. By framing the argument the way they do, their basic and not so subtle premise is that the money belongs to the all important STATE and that, if tax rates are lowered, YOU are taking money from the all-important State – never mind that it was once yours.
It is worthy to note that Thomas Paine wrote in Common Sense that: “Some writers have so confounded society with government as to leave little or no distinction between them.” Of course, politicians make writers seem, well, simply academic on the point. Under Demo-nomics, Paine’s distinction becomes our pain which is what makes Demo-nomics actually Demon-omics.

Tax cuts benefit the consumer, businesses, and the economy. Tax increases benefit a spendthrift congress and government.
All of the sudden the Dems are for the tax cuts, so they're joining the GOP to keep it extended. Of course we all know why they're doing this, right?
This article should be required "daily" reading for all congressional members!!
Taxes levied for anything other than what is clearly outlined in the constitution is theft!
Democrat Tax Policy?
Pure Myth.
It is essentially a wedge; divide and conquer. Class warfare.
They want to appear to benefit the "little guy", while going after "the rich." It is a charade people are seeing through.
The Republicans should immediately propose increasing the Bush Tax Cuts by an additional 20% across the board, with corresponding cuts in federal spending, and they should make it all permanent.
If the democrats want to play a political game with people's lives, we should throw it right back in their faces.
In the Alice in Wonderland world of democrats, all the money earned in this country belongs to the government, and it is up to them to decide how much you need to keep in order to survive. And if you want more than to merely survive you are greedy.
Taxes are the forcible taking of what another person has earned through their time effort. Dems have the misguided belief that what all Americans earned is the property of the govt so there for they also believe that when they take less from us they are doing us a favor. It is time that the govt stop looking to taxes to fund their wild programs and start cutting their spending like every one else has already done. The people of America are already over taxed and can barely afford to survive. More taxes are not the solution but part of the problem.
These bozos will tax us right into poverty….oh wait, they are already doing that.
Come on….. they make it up as they go along!
For liberals, taxation has nothing to do with generating revenue. It's all about punitive action. Bush's tax cuts led to the highest level of federal revenue in history! After the tax cuts, the rich carried the highest tax burden for society in general in history. That's the goal of the liberals, but it's still not punitive enough.
Face it libs are evil. Their policy choices are based on hatred. That's why they absolutely cannot be leaders. They can't construct, rather just destroy.
(How do you give a tax cut to people who pay NO taxes?)
Furthermore, the income tax is just the tip of the iceberg. Throw in capital gains, property, sales, corporate, local and state taxes, and more taxes that you've never heard of on top of all sorts of "fees" and you quickly realize we are one of the most, if not THE most, taxed nations on the planet.
Well put, I've thought about these backward terms before and wondered why no one on tv interviews would throw it back in opponents faces. It is so condesending to imply to large groups of people that "hey were letting you keep your money…but well take it later at a time we see fit and at a rate we feel ENTITLED to YOUR money." Its nonsense…
It doesn't sound as if you got the point of the article. The "Bush tax cuts" have been in place for 10 years. They are not "cuts"…they are the reality of the last ten years. Letting them "expire" IS a TAX INCREASE. Don't buy into the Democrats talking points.
On another note….over $910,000 now.
http://christine2010.com/
Yes, I do remember the "temporary" tax cuts during the bush years that the dims did not want to make permanent. However, I was referring to tax cuts in general. I also realize that the only reason some dims are supporting an extension of Bush's tax cuts now is to save their backsides in Nov. Watch closely after the Nov elections how quickly they change their minds during the "lame duck" session. That's when they will do the most harm to the economy and the nation. Reid has already attached amnesty to the military spending bill. Just wait for cap and trade, net neutrality, etc.
Can you just hear the wailing and the gnashing of teeth from obama on down? We really need some serious strategists in the Republican Party, outflanking the dems at every turn. Even if this proposal went nowhere with this current Congress, it would completely change the narrative, and telegraph the intentions of a Republican Congress.
That is very true, we have been duped for years.
Democrats Tax Policy?
Isn't it funny?
The Democrats now want to KEEP the Bush Tax Cuts, and call them the Obama Tax Cuts.
Do they REALLY think the American people are so stupid, that they won't see through that transparent charade?
And if you continue to wonder why businesses are afraid to expand with this fiscally schizophrenic administration, I have an imperfect spherical silicate construct for sale, only $300,000.00 (accept Pay Pal only from a verified account)
The Dems have been pulling this crap for years. I remember one year when the education budget was supposed to go up by something like 12%, and the Republicans said it should only go up by 8%. To Ted Kennedy and his fellow travelers – who were foaming-at-the-mouth-mad – this equated to, "slashing the education budget to the bone."
I think they are on more powerful drugs than Alice took.
They don't call them "Tax and Spend Liberals" for nothing! and they don't call them "Bleeding Heart Liberals" for nothing!
They'll tell dramatic sob stories, with "buzz words" like "under-privileged children" or "those in poverty" and they will conive in order to line their own, their dictator friends and the Union's pockets.
Now with the Democrat socialists in high gear and fairly desperate they will send our Country into a bankrupt TAILSPIN in order to replace The Constitution with Oppression in the form of socialist Global World Order, with U.S. as the SLAVES!
I agree, but that won't happen until we have a conservative congress(2010 – 2012) and conservative president in 2012. However, to discredit BO and his trolls even more, the repubs would do well to continue to introduce real spending cuts during the lame duck session even though they will be voted down by our infamous dims.
I'm just thankful I wasn't alive in the 1950s. Top rate was over 90%. Makes the proposed 40% top rate seem like a bargain. That is what the top rate IS going to be BTW, It's not really a "proposed tax increase" John Boehner will hem and he'll haw, but at the end of the day he'll cut a deal. Principals are flexible in an election year, and he wants to say that the Republicans cut taxes for the middle class.
Q: What business operator anywhere on the planet creates 10 year budgets and spends based on those forecasts…?
A: Not one, they would be accused of running a ponzi or pyramid finance scheme and brought up on charges by the Securities and Exchange Commission.
Budgets simply put are wish lists, when your revenue falls you eliminate "unnecessary" expenditures and "frivolous" projects from your wish list to adjust to the capital shortfall and meet your bills…
If I went on a shopping spree with credit cards and didn't have a job to pay them back but based my ability to repay them on "potential future earnings" I would be put in jail.
Stan, a flat tax with no loopholes and deductions would be so much better . That way everyone contributes according to their means.
Here's the infamous statement.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CbHTJSu_2Lk
Thanks, Stan, for the reminder..
Here here! They should start with the Pledge of Allegiance, follow up with a daily lesson on the Constitution, read above article and go on to the day’s business. They should end the day with a moment of silence to reflect on all of the blood and treasure sacrificed for liberty.
The Democrats used to be known as the party of "Tax and Spend". I submitt that it is no longer true. They are now the party of "Spend and Tax".
Yes sir…. the Dems and some OMB fellows look at the US economy as belonging to the STATE and
always have, for that matter.
Any tax credit or incentive is ALWAYS viewed as a COST to the Federal Government.
BTW, I have made it my LIFE'S WORK to make sure I COST the Federal Government as much as
possible, even to the point of embarrassing my accountant. Perhaps there are Scottish ancestors
in my background.
I sneer at my friends who speak of being AUDITED and brag how happy they are with their accoun-
tant, because they didn't owe a dime. If you didn't owe a dime, I ask, then can you be sure you weren't
grossly overpaying? Me, I want to dance right up to that line on my tippy-toes.
In fact it is an extended family inside joke that we all stay broke, trying to 'cheat' (legally, of course) Uncle
Sam out of HIS share of our income.
.
If Repubs had a set of nutz they would say: Folks you can't buy the lies and propraganda being spread. When you hear the left use code words like "rich" making over $250K think "employer" who creates a samll business that employes 40 or 50 workers. When you hear the left say "greenhouse gas" think …my fellow citizen in UK pays $9.00 per gallon of gas…what does his politicans do with that money? When you hear the left say "ethical or honest" you know they mean those are the rules for you..not us them they know better! Your government and the shame street media is trying to propragandize you into beliving that your freedoms should come them as they know even better than God what you need…is that the America you want a TAX US OF EVIL…with $9.00 gas..no employment…living on the scraps that your government will allow you?
MAN UP!
And don't forget they must sing the National Anthem too…..there….what a wonderful day eh?
Good morning P2O.
When I was little and learning how to talk, I couldn't say "CR" together, I called them demotax.. My parents said I was smart at my young age. LOL Of course I knew nothing about politics but they started calling them that in our family from then on.
"Temporary" Taxes That Stuck: http://www.investopedia.com/articles/tax/10/tempo...
Excellent article. Thanks. Personally, I don't know of any tax that once imposed has ever been repealed.
Dave, you are absolutely correct!
They have already done it. The US owes more money than exists on the planet today.
Taxes by and large are a mechanism used to fund social engineering projects by the left.
If only necessary government functions were funded, taxes would be so low they would be virtually unnoticeable.
Good morning to you GHUA. You betcha!
Yup, they just run to the well (the American Tax Payer). Problem is, the well is drying up quickly.
HOW TO ANGER THE COMMIE MSM AND FORM A RACIST HATE GROUP:
1 – Gather Americans who know their rights and love their country.
2 – Pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America (one nation under God).
3 – Affirm that the Constitution of the United States is the supreme law.
4 – Demand that our elected representatives follow the rule of law.
5 – Demand that our elected representatives honor their Oath of Office.
6 – Demand that our elected representatives protect Americans and secure our borders!
7 – Demand smaller government.
8 – Demand lower taxes.
GO TEA PARTIES U.S.A. – TAKE AMERICA BACK IN NOVEMBER
The idea that tax cuts "cost" the government money should tell all of us how the state views citizens. We are essentially seen as property of the state. As such, any income we generate through our labor belongs to the state before it ever belongs to us. What we are allowed to keep supposedly demonstrates the magnificent generosity of the people in Washington who spend the money. After all, it's their money — not ours.
There is a word for this kind of system, and that word is slavery.
We’ll have too agree to disagree on this one. If you leave the tax code in place as in ’86 when the first Flat Tax was enacted, it will simply grow back to the meddling monstrosity that we have today. Statist Washington cannot be trusted, and must be defanged, the only way to do that, remove their play toy.
Progressive taxation is class warfare.
………….."Tax cuts benefit the consumer, businesses, and the economy. Tax increases benefit a spendthrift congress and government"
You sir are Racist ,Teabagging,Homophobic,Liar !!!!!!!!!!
Get with the program
All the money belongs to the Government and they let you keep some of what you make !!!!
If the Dems want to take it all it's the right thing to do
Now go say 6 "Hail Obama's" and beg forgivness
/sarc
You know, John, the fact that they're not doing this kind of thing already makes me question to what extent the DNC and the GOP are colluding with each other. I mean, we know it's going on…but I'm beginning to believe that we're only seeing the tip of the iceberg.
One thing is for certain. As our grassroots conservative movement gains more and more momentum, the conspirators will begin outing themselves with their angry outbursts and obstructionist behavior. They can't hide from us any longer. Darkness only prevails in the absence of light. America is awake now and lights are coming on all through the house.
Ah…it has ever been so. Lame duck sessions are one of the many "slings and arrows" that America has had to endure. This, too, shall pass.
"…. it will simply grow back to the meddling monstrosity that we have today. Statist Washington cannot be trusted, and must be defanged, the only way to do that, remove their play toy. "
I can't disagree with that.
What happens if the nations taxpayers and small businesses ALL decide NOT to pay Federal Income taxes in April 2011…I mean ALL of us? Can we ALL go to JAIL. So they take our houses…they get the mortgages too….so there is no cash to pay the Fed employees and the Federal pensions and the ss checks….etc…..Maybe the Nation wakes up and holds a constitutional referendum to impeach all Congress and the President and Cabinet and disband the justice department and amend the constitution to require a constantly balanced budget and no debt that exceeds any balance of trade surplus.
Running a $2 million annual sales company with 50 professional IT employees and paying employer normal insurance benefits, and taking a very reasonable salary as a CEO, having legal, regulatory, tax prep and audit, state franchise taxes in all states, sales and marketing expenses…..and you have a BREAK EVEN ONLY business, without generating ANY capital to fund ANY expansion, or to keep up with the cost of expanded taxes, higher premium costs for health ins, greater legal and accting expense for reporting against Federal regulatory authorities……
And that is a big deal small company…..no rich folks ANYWHERE to be found…just normal American entreprenural BUSINESS.
This kind of reality is TOTALLY unknown to academic and journalist economists, lawmakers, lawyers, and politicians that have never ever run or worked for a private enterprise without any Government contracts or grants.
Obama and the entire crowd are not only amateurs….they are STUPID.
uhhh, doesn't it require they be able to?
Running a $2 million annual sales company with 50 professional IT employees and paying employer normal insurance benefits, and taking a very reasonable salary as a CEO, having legal, regulatory, tax prep and audit, state franchise taxes in all states, sales and marketing expenses…..and you have a BREAK EVEN ONLY business, without generating ANY capital to fund ANY expansion, or to keep up with the cost of expanded taxes, higher premium costs for health ins, greater legal and accting expense for reporting against Federal regulatory authorities……
Despite Missteps And Democratic Attacks, Brewer And Angle Hold Strong
September 16, 2010 by Personal Liberty News Desk
Arizona Republican gubernatorial candidate Jan Brewer and the GOP nominee in the race for the United States Senate in Nevada, Sharron Angle, have established themselves as controversial and fiercely conservative politicians, but this does not seem to be hurting their poll numbers.
After last week’s infamous performance in an electoral debate, during which Brewer froze and stumbled in her opening statement and later refused to answer questions from reporters, she is still leading her Democratic opponent.
A new poll from Rassmussen Reports shows that the incumbent can count on 60 percent of the vote, against Democratic Attorney General Terry Goddard’s 38 percent. In fact, Brewer scored 57 percent in the same poll two weeks earlier, meaning she gained 3 percent after the debate.
Meanwhile, Nevada’s Angle — who became notorious for her plans to do away with Social Security, Medicare, Department of Education and the IRS, in addition to suggesting that poor people barter with their doctors in exchange for medical care — is in dead heat against Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (R-Nev.)
"Independents are buying her economic argument by large margins," said Mason-Dixon pollster Brad Coker, quoted by Las Vegas Review-Journal.
The Second American Revolution
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pKFKGrmsBDk&fe....
The Democrats will guarantee that folks only survive and the economy NEVER recovers. Remember that the US economy today is only a Consumer Driven one….not a trade and manufacturing one…we have more service industry than anything else….
Therefore, taxing ANYONE more, and producing NOTHING TO SELL with NO ONE ABLE TO PURCHASE…will guarantee the US economy CANNOT recover and NO JOBS can be created.
NO ONE WANTS TO BORROW MONEY IN THIS ECONOMY..businesses and individuals are hanging on to every penny….and tax CREDITS do NO ONE ANYGOOD when they do not make a taxable profit…and no one is making profits other than INVESTMENT BANKS and folks SELLING overseas.
The creeps in the White House economic adviser staff are children trying to play at being adults….
Sorry charlie, but getting academic accolades, Nobel Peace Prizes, and publishing books does not MAKE you competent to DO anything but pontificate and act wise and authoritarian…and if you have a teleprompter on top of that…you can even play at being President.
Are Obama's spendthrift policies going to lead to a second American Revolution? Has the public lost complete trust in our public officials? Is the Tea Party movement about the cross the Delaware?
http://www.pjtv.com/?cmd=mpg&mpid=105&loa...
Redistribute voter's money to the wealthy. Another $700 billion added to the deficit in the process. Why so Socialist?
Actually tax cuts also benefit congress since it has been proven time and again that government revenues increase when taxes are cut.
The Dems who are calling for an extension are the ones facing tough re-elections. It is CYA season in Washington. I have yet to find a Democrat that is telling his voters how he/she voted on Health care, Cap and Tax, the Wall street reform bill and so on. If these bills were so great, why not run your campaign on your accomplishments?
You are assuming that they can read. Many are now just finding out what they voted for in the health care bill. Gold sales must be tracked, all purchases over 600 bucks need a 1099 and so on. Crap that has nothing to do with healthcare. I would have liked to seen a price guide for medical providers installed in any kind of reform. I mean you pay one price if you have Medicare, and another if you have private insurance and still another if you don't have any insurance. Why not one price for everyone. I mean you wouldn't go to the store if they charged different prices depending on who you are…. so why is there different prices on medical services?
CL, ever since Obama was a Community Organizer, he and his progressive buddies have been doing the class warfare dance. the funny thing is that most of his major supporters and donors are the uber rich, like Soros, Gates, and so on. It seems to me that if they truly wanted to help the poor, they would spend some of the money they are using for buying elections and websites to directly assist the poor. But there is no profit in that. No government funding if you help a family directly. For all the money these people spend and all the federal grants they manage to steal, why is it that the poverty rate just went up to 14.3 percent? Can it be that these class warfare liars are taking the rest of us for a ride. Or is it that they are implementing Clowered and Piven? Breaking and overloading the system
so if this is based on alice in wonder land is obammie the madd hatter
Some quotes from a 1795 letter from Thomas Paine to President Washington:
"The part I acted in the American Revolution is well known; I shall not here repeat it. I know also that had it not been for the aid received from France, in men, money and ships, that your cold and unmilitary conduct (as I shall show in the course of this letter) would in all probability have lost America; at least she would not have been the independent nation she now is. You slept away your time in the field, till the finances of the country were completely exhausted, and you have but little share in the glory of the final event. It is time, Sir, to speak the undisguised language of historical truth"
"But meanness and ingratitude have nothing equivocal in their character. There is not a trait in them that renders them doubtful. They are so originally vice that they are generated in the dung of other vices, and crawl into existence with the filth upon their back. The fugitives have found protection in you, and the levee-room is their place of rendezvous."
I hate to crash the party here folks, but "tax cuts" actually do cost the government in at least one important way. While the author's description of how DC's dictionary wildly differs from any one you might have seen, is amusingly accurate, if fails to recognize the truth behind the lie.
When democrats cut taxes, it does actually cost money. You see, what has been forgotten here is that the lower brackets actually get back more than they pay in taxes. Such a person may pay 2000 dollars in income, SS, medicare, etc., but get back 5000 in refunds on the income tax. This would be a real life example that I have seen. Now, take a look at 2008's tax info. Let's knock what I just showed you to about 1500 per representative return. We're doing rough numbers here, but it should get your attention.
In 2008, about 50 million returns were filed in the under 20 grand range. This is the income area I'm talking about. The person in my example above made about 17 grand and still got that nice "windfall." Multiply 50 million by 1500 dollars. That's 75 billion dollars that the federal government paid out above all taxes collected from those brackets. "Tax cuts" do cost money, because a third of all filers are paid a profit for filing. It's not because the feds lose revenue. Taxes are cut, revenue goes up. It's a proven historical fact. But, to claim one is giving a tax break to that lowest third, they actually pay them more money. Which s also, by real world definition, not a tax break, but a profitable pay out.
As a matter of comparison, here are a list of 2008 federal budget items that costs less than the @75 million we likely paid, over and above what we collected from, the lower third of tax returns.
# $69.3 billion (+0.3%) – Department of Health and Human Services
# $56.0 billion (+0.0%) – Department of Education
# $39.4 billion (+18.7%) – Department of Veterans Affairs
# $35.2 billion (+1.4%) – Department of Housing and Urban Development
# $35.0 billion (+22.0%) – Department of State and Other International Programs
# $34.3 billion (+7.2%) – Department of Homeland Security
# $24.3 billion (+6.6%) – Department of Energy
# $20.2 billion (+4.1%) – Department of Justice
# $20.2 billion (+3.1%) – Department of Agriculture
# $17.3 billion (+6.8%) – National Aeronautics and Space Administration
# $12.1 billion (+13.1%) – Department of Transportation
# $12.1 billion (+6.1%) – Department of the Treasury
# $10.6 billion (+2.9%) – Department of the Interior
# $10.6 billion (-9.4%) – Department of Labor
# $51.8 billion (+9.7%) – Other On-budget Discretionary Spending
# $39.0 billion – Other Off-budget Discretionary Spending
Democrats say the rich don't pay enough. The "poor" pay less than nothing. They actually get paid at tax time. They make a profit! It's all lies. It's always lies. No one in DC could be honest if their own lives depended on it. And once again, a simple calculator and a willingness to go look up some numbers exposes the lies in less time than it took to make them up.
And, for the inevitable troll who thinks it's a rich guy whining, I am dirt poor at the moment. I made so little last year, I did not even file last year so that I would not be taking money out of the system. Yes, I honestly believe that our nation is more important than a check in my pocket. I am probably crazy, but that's how I honestly feel. And no, I do not take any government benefits either.
So, in long awaited summation…. I enjoyed the article. I thought it described DC's bizarre version of reality quite nicely, but just felt it appropriate to point out how there is some twisted truth to the mess…
Frances Fox Piven is now an advisor to the Obamboozler, paid for by our tax dollars. She should be mocked and shunned everywhere.
Things are getting better if they're only calling keeping level a "cut". Used to be that 10% increases could be "cuts" too.
Yet many of them are cutting lucrative deals for themselves and their family, friends and business cronies.
Interesting that the MSM goes along with the Dems rhetoric, but criticizes spending cut proposals. Unfortunately, the govt needs our money to fuel the voracious spending machine they have created. Folks, wait until the SS and Medicare bills come due. Congress and he Prez are avoiding taking about this now, but it's gonna hit us like nothing we've ever seen.
It's Obama's policies that are bankrupting the country and creating unsustainable defiicits. Now he needs our hard earned dollars to help pay for those deficits. They're coming after our 401K's next.
STOP SPENDING OUR MONEY!!
So by extending Bush's tax cuts for the wealthy, this would NOT add ANOTHER $700 billion to the deficit? The deficit that obviously never existed prior to 2009? Selective fiscal conservatism at it's best. Only care about fiscal responsibility ONLY IF it's the opposing political party. So now you support politicians who want to abolish Social Security and Medicare so your big government can pull the plug on Grandma and redistribute her money to the wealthy and pay for these tax cuts for the elites? Why so Socialist?
I prefer demanding these Conservatives GIVE US BACK OUR MONEY YOU SPENT!!
Take more of MY MONEY and redistribute it to the wealthy. Screw that, Socialist.
This makes absolutely no sense, and it only reinforces the point I made above. You believe the government "owns" the fruits of our labor (our income). You believe letting people keep their income is equivalent to the government giving us something. The obvious implication of this line of thinking is that the state consequently "owns" us as well.
Taxes by definition are the confiscation of money from citizens. Taxes are not a government program. As such, they cannot "add to the deficit." Taxes do not cost the government anything, whether they are raised or lowered. Spending is what creates debt, and any kid in 4th grade can tell you that.
Socialism entails the redistribution of other people's money. You facetiously decry tax cuts as "socialism" because you believe the money collected by the government never belonged to the people who earned the money. In other words, you believe the government owns us like livestock. Not once do people like you consider cutting spending. That's how dependent on the system you've become — you can't imagine a world where the government isn't telling us what to do.
We're all slaves to the state. The difference between us, though, is that your mind is also enslaved.
They are doing what elitists do.
What a line of absolute bullsh#t just so you can redistribute America's money to the wealthy through unpaid for tax cuts for the rich folks you obediently serve.
So do you endorse just ignoring the deficit or just slashing the ever living hell out of programs for regular Americans so everything can be redistributed to the wealthy masters you serve in such a a "socially" acceptable manor?
"America's money?" What the hell is that? Please define "America's money."
See, that's exactly my point. You don't even think people have a right to what they've earned. You believe it belongs to the collective, that it is to be doled out by much smarter people than us who reside in government.
The problem is, the government has over-promised. We're on the hook for over $100 trillion in entitlement obligations. That's simply never going to happen — so yes, government is going to have to be slashed if we're going to survive as a country. Does that scare you? It shouldn't. Each of us is plenty capable of living without the umbilical cord of the state.
And I'm getting sick of this argument that people like me somehow "serve rich folks." Hardly. I serve myself. You choose to serve the state. I don't want my children being slaves to debt. You most likely don't have children and couldn't care less.
Money owned by American's…hello? Our tax dollars are supposed to go for good stuff like the tax payer funded streets the Tea Party has their little anti-tax marches on or the tax payer funded parks the Tea Party has their little anti-tax bitch sessions on (define irony).
"The problem is, the government has over-promised. We're on the hook for over $100 trillion in entitlement obligations." — And you propose on having !.4 trillion for entitlement tax cuts to the wealthy you obediently serve while proposing holding Grandma hostage by abolishing her Social Security and Medicare to pay for these wealthy entitlement tax cuts. Redistributing her money to the elites. Your sense of entitlement is the less you make, the more your salary should be redistributed to those who make the most and don't pay their fair share of our debt because of your socialist obedience.
"Does that scare you? It shouldn't. Each of us is plenty capable of living without the umbilical cord of the state. " — Yes! Anybody who endorses a salary distribution programs to take my hard-earned salary and everything I worked for to redistribute it to wealthy elites they obediently serve are pretty scary people. You attack the middle class to force it to be lower class because you feel the millionaires are desperately in need of entitlement programs and salary redistribution welfare. Thanks to a$$holes like you, the middle class is being wiped out so you can obediently serve elites with your socialist redistribution plans.
"I don't want my children being slaves to debt. " — Instead have them be slaves to the same elites you serve? Did you actually give a sh#t about your kids when we put ourselves trillions of dollars in debt for the Iraq War? And you probably wouldn't give a sh#t about your kids if given the same opportunity to go to war with Iran? "F##k you kids! Gotta serve the Neo-cons!" The absolute largest and most expensive entitlement program this country has is the over-priced, bloated, wasteful defense budget. Care about your kids like you "claim" you do then cut that umbilical cord rather than teaching them how to set up welfare programs for the elites.
Where are you getting that I think money should be redistributed anywhere? I'm a libertarian; I'm for the smallest state possible, with the absolute least amount of taxes possible, and with none of that revenue being distributed to other citizens or businesses in the form of entitlements or subsidies.
By the way, I screamed constantly about this throughout the Bush administration, I opposed the war in Iraq (and Afghanistan), and I've repeatedly called for shrinking the defense budget. I was frequently called a liberal for doing that, but at least I'm being consistent here. Are you still screaming about these things now that Obama's in power? Because the defense budget has actually grown under his leadership, and he's kept every Bush policy in place. Nothing's changed.
All of that aside, none of those things compares to how much the government is obligated to pay people for future services. It's seriously more than $100 trillion dollars. If you don't believe me, go watch the documentary I.O.U.S.A. The former comptroller of the government helped make the film because of how scared he became after being the chief accountant for our country. I know it's a lot easier to think we can just tax more, or print more, or borrow more, but all we're doing is ensuring the downfall of the United States. Government must shrink or we will all be less free.
I've noticed that syntax has had no comment on this sober reality, but would rather claim that letting people keep more of their wages somehow "costs" government instead. That somehow, that is wealth redistribution to the rich, which in the grim light of reality is a cynical lie at best. Keeping the current rates is somehow unfair to the lower third of "taxpayers" who are actually tax payees? It's not only untruthful, but a ridiculous claim on it's face.
Kind of a silly reverse argument since the bottom third of alleged taxpayers actually get back more than they pay in. While the "rich" that you demonize actually pay taxes. That the government should collapse or deficits will grow out of control if the few don't pay more than they already do is a ridiculous argument that ignores the nature of revenues to rise after a tax cut, which this is not, is is the current status quo, and ignores the idea that the government is responsible for spending.
It's like blaming your employer because you knowingly spent more money than you had in your bank account. And imagine how much smaller the deficit might be if the lower third of taxpayees simply owed nothing rather than actually being profitably paid for simply filing paperwork to the tune of 10's of billions of dollars.
Libertarians? The people who want everything for free? The ones who constantly complain about big government then complain when government isn't there to wipe their a$$es every time something goes wrong. Libertarians have never been elected for a reason.
Wonderful idea! I agree with L4S. Best idea I've heard today.
Demonize me as someone who doesn't pay taxes because I'm not rich? How obedient of you. Should my salary be redistributed now since I'm not rich and therefore I'm demonized as not paying taxes. The rich pay less per dollar in taxes than I do. F#ck 'em and their Socialist acolytes!
"It's like blaming your employer because you knowingly spent more money than you had in your bank account." — How stupid is this point? If I took a massive cut in pay (tax cut) and still spent money like a drunken sailor from 2001 to present, is that my employer's fault? Is this the middle class' fault? Is this a reason why we should abolish Social Security and Medicare and pull the plug on Grandma so we can redistribute her money to elites who don't pay their fair share because obedient min-pins like you defend them at the expense of Americans? Make the middle class pay more because rich people need to be served by Socialist whores who are too stupid to charge for their services?
In 2009, I received the biggest tax cut since Reagan which I guess makes me a greedy scumbag to the Socialists since I'm not rich and therefore demonized as somebody who doesn't pay my taxes.
Yes there are multitudes of people that are that ignorant/stupid. So much so in fact, they are probably still waiting for Obama to pay their mortgage, car note, power bill, etc. from, from, well, from where exactly they are not sure. It must be from Obama's stash.
Actually, I did not demonize you for your tax status. I have no idea what bracket you are in. I did not demonize you at all. I definitely called your specious argument into question.
First, you cannot "re-distribute" money to the people who actually paid the money. You can only confiscate less or more. The bottom third of taxpayees do not pay taxes. They receive more in "refunds" then they paid in taxes. So, it is not that they do not pay taxes, or pay too much, it is that they get more back than they paid in. They make a significant profit on filling out their tax forms. Your continued insistence that one is "redistributing wealth to the wealthy" by not raising taxes, or by cutting them a bit more, is a ridiculous concept that is not even remotely reflected in reality. It is an idea that only exists in fantasy. You are upset on behalf of the "middle class?" How about being upset that the bottom third of tax filers make a 75 billion dollar profit at the expense of the middle class.
Meanwhile, in Gotham, your ridicule of my employer analogy simply restated my point. In your re-telling of my analogy, as well as in mine, you are correct, your overspending is your fault. Just as the government's spending is it's responsibility. Just as it s not your employer's responsibility to cover your capricious spending habits, it is not the taxpayers responsibility to automatically cover the capricious spending habits of congress. It is not the fault of the middle class, or the rich. The bottom third can hardly complain about the bill since they are actually making a profit off of taxes. Though you can blame voters in general for re-electing these drunken spending sailors over and over again.
I'm not sure why you called my simple analogy stupid when you simply repeated it while changing some of the words. Incidentally, since socio-economic status is so important to folks like you, I will disclose that I happen to be part of that bottom third. I am dirt poor right now. That I might benefit, in some way, from the status quo does not make is fair, right, or just. My personal benefit does not trump fixing what is wrong.
For my part, I made so little, I have been able to avoid filing so that I would not be taking money out of the til. I also take no government benefits. The fact that I am poor does not change the fact that government spending is well past being out of control, and that I should not be getting thousands of dollars back more than I have paid in.
BTW, someone tell me exactly who qualifies as the middle class? Everyone says it, but what does it mean? As of 2008, people who made over 100,000 dollars paid about 75% of the trillion plus dollars that income taxes collected. People who made from 20,000 to 100,000 paid about 25% of the tax bill. Those who made less than 20,000 got paid about a 75 billion dollar profit, above what little they paid in.
Let's put it another way. Out of about 140 million folks who filed tax returns, about 18 million people paid 75 % of the bill. 75 million people paid 25% of the bill. About 49 million people actually got paid about 75 billion dollars, as opposed to making no contribution or just a small contribution. That's about 6% of all income taxes collected that were immediately given to those 49 million people before going to any budgetary use.
I think you dont know what a libertarian and are confusing it for a progressive. A progressive is the one who wants everything free and always complain to the government even about the smallest issues, hints all the pointless regulations and rules we have now.
A libertarian is one who wants to support themselves more. Having the state taking less and intruding less on business and personal life. They go more for personal responsibility over big brother.
You get it now Syntax, or does it need to be simplified more for you.
Yeah yeah yeah…big government sucks but why is government not doing more of this or that…typical Libertarian blah blah blah. I hate big government but where was government to clean up oil spill of prevent 9/11 or create this or do more of that and don't forget dictating reproductive decisions and Libertarian blah blah blah.
I've got to believe (hope) that all of this is going to backfire on the GOP in November. Anyone who still believes that they are on the side of anything but the plutocracy ought to have another sip.
Long ago the Republicans ceased being a political party. They are now an organized criminal enterprise. Wake up.

Redistributing? Its their money to begin with!!! You lefties believe that all income belongs to the state and they decide if what if any you get to keep.
Who is the one that pushed the deficit to $13 trillion? Your saviour, the Annointed One. You have things backwords, the government needs to cut spending!!!!
And who said they want to abolish SS and Medicare? Stick to the facts, although I know that is a big challange for you proglodytes
Yeah, because Obama isn't the one who's taken record amounts from Goldman Sachs and BP. Right?
Oh wait. He is.
