Jerry Brown’s Potential Crippling Blow to California
by Thomas Del BeccaroCalifornia is facing nearly The Toughest of Times. We face historically high unemployment, perennial budget crises and more. Don’t think it could get any worse? Think again. If Jerry Brown is elected, in one short stroke, he could deal a potentially crippling blow to the California economy before it gets a chance to get back on its feet.
Even for a committed political observer, volunteer and commentator such as myself, it seems implausible – but true – that the stakes for elections grow with each successive election. For California, the 2010 gubernatorial election unquestionably could be the most important election ever – and not necessarily for a good reason. If Jerry Brown is elected, he and his fellow Democrats could deliver a devastating blow to California.
We well know that California’s unemployment rate is above 12%. We also know that well over 100,000 people are leaving California on a yearly basis. Beyond that, California faces an exodus of businesses – large and small alike. So it can be no surprise that state revenues have declined nearly $40 billion over the last three years as a result of the declining taxpayer base.
We also well know why California is having a tougher time than many other states. In recent years, California is consistently ranked near the bottom of states in which to do business. According to Joseph Vranich, president of JV Executive Consulting Inc. in Irvine: “It’s no mystery what causes companies to leave California: High taxes, undue regulation, workers’ comp costs, a legal environment stacked against businesses and lengthy and costly construction permitting requirements.” Indeed, California finished tied for last in the Country in Forbes’ Overall Tax Burden survey measuring tax burdens and structure.
Could thinks get worse? Under a Brown Governorship, the answer would have to be: YES.
Keep in mind that Brown has no published or unpublished plan for dealing with California’s many crises – and that uncertainty hurts California businesses as much as anywhere else. But that won’t be the worst of it. If Jerry Brown is elected Governor, every business owner in California can be sure that Democrats under Brown would roll back worker’s compensation reform in California to pre-2004 rates.
California small businesses and large employers simply cannot afford the cost explosion that that would entail. Recently, a Bay Area business owner told me that his company’s workers comp rates rose from $650,000 to $4 million per year before the reforms were passed. Now his rates are around $950,000 per year in his labor intensive business. Already facing cash flow issues, he believed that any workers comp roll back would more than jeopardize the jobs of his workers. Obviously, his company is not alone in that predicament.
Don’t think the Democrats would do such a thing? Know that they have pushed at least partial rolls backs every year since workers comp was reformed. Or perhaps you would like to ask the Central Valley, which features cities with unemployment rates more than double the state average, just how bad government policy can be.
Don’t think Jerry Brown would allow it to happen? Well, given that the unions are funding his campaign and the negative ads on Meg Whitman – do you really think Brown could say no to them? Are you willing to take that chance?
In sum, the environment for California employers could get worse if Jerry Brown is elected – much worse. The resulting higher unemployment and higher deficits (even higher than today) could leave California in deep trouble for at least another 6 years – four years of Brown and at least 2 more to recover from that.
Can your business afford that? Can you afford that? In my view, California can’t and so we cannot afford Jerry Brown under any circumstances – this year or any other.

All I can say is if the legal residents of California can't beat Brown, the unions and illegals in November, it will be time for a REAL mass exodus. Their homes will have been for all intents and purposes usurped by the state government. Oregon is not far behind, I'm afraid…..

Jerry Browns policies when he was Governor years ago really hurt California and in many ways we have never recovered. Its obscene to think that this man may once again get the chance to finish what he started many years ago.
Frankly, Brown's statements in the past about there being an acceptable rate of unemployment (a rate not congruous with a thriving economy), and the state's duty to compensate these people so that these folks can do other things should be enough to dissuade any person who cares about taking care of his own family from voting for MoonBeam.

Arnold won because he WASNT a politician, and the thought was that he was independently wealthy and thus would not be tempted to accept bribes from special interests and thus be beholden to their wishes.
This turned out to be accurate, and he tried to push through a number of reforms to the way CA deals with unions, labor, cost outlays, etc.
Unfortunately this is still California, so that means the assembly shut him down (overwhemingly democrat) on every issue, and when he took them to the voters the unions came out kicking and screaming with an ENORMOUS advertising campaign, media blitz etc. that portrayed the governers actions as trying to fix a problem created by government, using union members as a bargaining currency. Naturally in post-fiscal crisis California, he failed.
Unfortunately we're now reaping what the unions sowed with that campiagn – They won! and now all of California pays the price.

There is going to be a minimum level of unemployment, and a slightly higher level of unemployment that is just not worth trying to get under due to social costs, but both are a heck of a lot lower than Brown is going to claim.
And I don't have a problem with providing care for the unemployable, but they do not have a right to anthing more than the minimum needed to stay alive, and that does not include cable TV or expensive cars. I say "Go back to food baskets, stop the food stamps."

As a borderline Californian (originally from ultra conservative, borderline libertarian New Hampshire, but have been living in CA for the past 5 years) I can say that I hope Jerry Brown is elected. He will do horrible, horrible things to state, make the unemployment rate go beyond 20% drive out every business to the point even Apple and Oracle decide to leave, and raise taxes to the point of government sponsored slavery. With any luck, he'll cause the stae government to go bankrupt and collapse.
And then, after all the dust settles, maybe, just maybe, we'll finally see some sane conservative policies in this state. But don't hold your breath. After living among them, I can say without a doubt that Californians are the dumbest people in this country. At least the liberals in Massachuetts have at least read a book and you can have discussions with them. Californians define knee-jerk liberalim, and I have to have a conversation with a liberal in this state that hasn't resorted to name-calling isntead of substantively dealing with my arguments.

People that are generally independent who do not want to be told where they will work, how much they will pay in dues, how much they will be allowed to keep etc. are conservative.
Point #2 – Did you notice the part of the article mentioning the exodus of 100,000 productive taxpaying residents leaving each year? These people are not replaced by other productive taxpayers, they are being replaced by uneducated, no job skill illegals.
Point #3 California comprises 12% of the nations population but accounts for 32% of all welfare recipients. This proves my point #2. The sanctuary cities are encouraging those who consume tax dollars and forcing those who pay taxes to leave. When states like Nevada & AZ offer 10 to 15 year tax breaks, why would any business stay here? The last of the big companies will eventually leave including Amgen, Baxter, Countrywide which will mean an additional 20% drop in state revenue.
What it all spells out is liberal policies in this state has driven tax receipts down significantly over the last two decades. With an exodus of both productive taxpayers and businesses, it is only a matter of time until the liberal machine breaks. Face it – moonbeam is not going to win the election. Many residents still remember his disaster as governor back in the 70s.

I think it would be great. California goes into the tank even further and the rest of us can benefit from the implosion. Definitely a time to short your position on state and municipal bonds from California.
Now if we could add a dual layer fence system with automatic weapons that fire upon detection we'd be in business….add a few wild dogs and other predators and we'd keep em out…
CA is the biggest piece of proof that Progressivism doesnt work and many liberals policies that fail. Unfortunitly, many in power of the state either ignore those facts or are not aware of them. Not to forget the large amounts of money lost for CA unions as well.
I will say this on my behalf as a native Californian, I am glad I left that state many years ago.
Frankly, I can't believe that ol' Moonbeam is trying to inflict himself and his policies on our state again, and that even more surprising, that people would actually vote for him. However, Whitman is no different, despite her claims. She's simply the other face on a two-headed liberal monster which CA conservative dragon-fighters will be unlikely to defeat.

Had a flood in the neighborhood several years back. FEMA showed up to my house to peddle the strings attached, we ir from da government and we r here to elp UUUU crap. Told em to take a hike. I'd much prefer to do it myself right the first time. It actually cost less.

Seriously, I wish you could see the schools in my town. They look like something out of a war-torn third world dung pile. And the stupid people here keep voting more bonds and taxes "for the chillldrrrennn!" Talk about the definition of stupidity.
My town almost hired a convicted felon as a principal when information about him was readily available with a simple google search. You can't make this stuff up!
I would say that LJ may have accomplished what it set out to. Channel that anger to Whitmans campaign, and all the other conservative candidates that are wanting to get California on the road to recovery. I am on your side.

If they're stupid enough to put another bleeding heart liberal in charge, California deserves what it gets. They're airing commercials now begging people to come work in CA because the vast majority of us who actually paid taxes fled the state almost a decade ago.
