Steering Clear of Obama’s Bermuda Triangulation
by Thomas Del BeccaroIn the wake of his divisive subpar first year, it is plainly evident that Obama has switched to campaign mode. If we recall that Reagan told us that Democrats campaign for President as moderates and govern from the Left, we understand well why Obama sounded centrist in 2008, pursued a Leftist agenda in 2009 and, in this midterm election year, is now reaching out to Republicans.

We know that Obama has given his Presidential campaign advisor an “expanded” White House role. In addition to that, Obama, in a high profile manner, met with Congressional Republicans on Health Care and is reaching out to them on a jobs bill among other tactics. In the face of such Clintonesque triangulation, the questions become: What should the Republicans do? Meet Obama half way? Stonewall him? Or offer their own agenda? Given that the political handshake can often be the kiss of death, especially in a Tea Party World, Republicans need to go on the offensive by framing the debate if they are going to avoid Obama’s Bermuda Triangulation.
It is essential to note that whoever frames the election debate is the likely winner of the election. Democrats win elections by promoting what government can do in the face of adversity that they blame on capitalism or the market. Republicans win elections by exposing the limits and detriments of government in addition to trumpeting the limitless values of freedom and the American spirit.
So, in 2008, when McCain promoted the government purchase of bad mortgages, that played into the hands of Democrats because it was a government response to a crisis – even though government caused the crisis. In 1980, by contrast, Reagan persuaded Americans that government was the cause of our problems and that granting Americans more freedom from government, i.e. cutting taxes and regulations, was the solution. In the first instance, the election was fought on the Democrat’s terms and the Democrats won. In the second instance, the election was fought and won on Republican terms.
Viewed in that context, Obama’s job bill offers a mix of government responses, i.e. spending, and private incentives, i.e. tax credits. It is a tough combination for Republicans to combat lest they be derided in the Media as the Party of No or obstructionist.
The only way for Republicans to effectively avoid such monikers is to take the rhetorical debate to the Democrats and Obama and not simply be in a responsive mode. The political battlefield is simply ripe with opportunities for Republicans to do so.
For instance, Republicans must make the case that we have tried the Big Government way in 2009 and it has not worked. Republicans shoudl cite the countless examples of government waste of the taxpayers’ money while unemployment has remained high. For instance, $54 million in federal stimulus funds will be spent at the behest of U.S. Congressman Mike Thompson (D-CA) to pay for renovations of railroad track for a private “wine train” in Napa Valley. The entire amount went to an Alaskan construction firm on a no-bid contract that will creat only 12 sustainable jobs – that’s $4.5 million per job! If every American knew that, they would be loathe to give Obama’s government more money.
Republicans should go on the road and hold townhalls with small businesses owners around the country and demonstrate that $4.5 million could start at least 10 restaurants employing over 100 people in sustainable jobs – a dynamic which could be repeated over and over – if only we allowed Americans to keep their own money and fuel our recovery.
None of that can be achieved, however, if Republicans are simply in a reactive state to Obama’s proposals. Republicans must take the rhetorical fight to the Democrats and frame the debate on terms on which Republicans can win. Given Obama’s rehiring of campaign manager and his triangulating offers, Republicans obviously have no time waste if they are to win this most important debate of 2010.

Obama saw a bump in the polls when he met with the republicans and now will use them as props on daily basis. The American people are smarter than that. They see beyond the Hollywood reality – they live in the real world and deal with real problems.
Follow the money. The racket of mass destruction unleashed on US Housing might be off the balance sheets but it is clearly not out of sight or out of mind.
This is a weapon both the DNC and RNC built together. And the scoundrels who implemented the plan will pay the price perhaps in another lifetime. But in this lifetime the fight is barely starting. They may try to pretend that the entire mortgage industry is not worse than a house of cards but the high profile rape of Fannie and Freddie et al is sinking into the collective head of the average American.
When average American sees – really sees – what they have done I do fear for the safety of some elected officials. Rage could be the understatement of the century right after Securities Fraud in Mortgages.
Tom, are you going to clean the Nehring stench out of the California GOP or is it going to be business as usual?
Republicans need to avoid being in defensive position. They must "take the bull by the horns" and
move kindly, BUT aggressively beginning right now. That is an excellent idea to take to the road,
so to speak, and meet with business owners across the land – face to face. Call Obama's bluff.
All of his meetings are for photo-op purposes!
Americans want to see real people in government – not just politicians, so Repubs need to take off
their beltway hats and adorn the coonskin of everyday life out here in the real American world of
everyday folks. Please do it, for the sake of saving our country!!
The republicans should tell Obama to F off in a pc way ofcourse, he didn't write any of the bills and holds no bills, there in the house/senate.. The people are against his agenda and the republicans wouldn't take any heat for not jumping in on the house/senate bills that they had no hand in writing… The repulicans better remember what he told them after the election " I won" let him live with his agenda and let the dems die with it !!!
I don't think the Republicans are the party of no…They are the party of HELL NO. At least they better be, if any of them plan on getting re-elected.
The best thing for the Republicans to do is to continue obstructing Obamas agenda as much, and as often as they can. It's the only way they will convince the American people their serious…
There should be no reason to have 1,500+ pages of twisty verbiage shoved down our throats. The Dems are very quickly starting to retreat into their collective dark and seedy corners. If this healthcare makeover was so great, it would NOT have all the exclusions, exceptions and op-out clauses for union and government (fed.-state etc) employees and retiree's.
REAL change should always be from the top down. As I see it I’ll start believing their sincerity when they themselves are the first in line to be on the very programs they want me to pay for and use.
A warning to the GOP…. this has the look and feel of a date rape.
Why would you volunteer to act in your own demise?
Dave, I only wish more folks really understood this travesty.
Carter/Clinton created Fannie and Freddie while Bush nurtured it.
The RINO leadership has neither the guts nor ideology to do as you suggest. Graham, McCain, et al fight pork, waste, special interests, and big government? Look at their records. Their political careers have been built on paying lip service to conservative principles. They should tell Obama "We'll stay here on Capital Hill doing our job, and you can stay in the White House and learn to do yours."
Be careful. Obama is a proven double-crosser. If you shake hands with him; count your fingers afterwards. This smells of a Chicago style set up. The meeting must be on neutral ground, drenched in sunlight, C-Span, lots of back up, and with an agenda in stone. Otherwise: No Deal.
It will be of little avail to the people that the laws are made by men of their own choice if the laws be so voluminous that they cannot be read, or so incoherent that they cannot be understood.
-James Madison
This Health Care "Reform" thing is merely a smoke screen to conceal Obama's primary objective:
The destruction of our economy and the American way of life (i.e., AIG)
The tragic thing here is that the Republicans are too damn simple to see this and are going to fall hook line and sinker to this 'reaching out' nonsense.
Send Obama a public proclamation of what the agenda of this or any meeting will be.
Otherwise you are still part of the problem.
I wish that what you say was true. Fact is that there are an aweful lot of idiots out there, many in the middle who continue to be too much on the hopey changey side and keep looking for some percieved bi-partisanship. the GOP needs to hold a hard line. We cannot fix their broken bill. It is wrong on its premise so any amount of negotiating will still result in crap. We need to not be seen as the party of NO, we need to be the party of HELL NO.
Republicans ought learn from recent history.
"Given Obama’s rehiring of campaign manager and his triangulating offers, Republicans obviously have no time waste if they are to win this most important debate of 2010."
If New Jersey, Virginia, and most recently Massachusetts are any indication, Republicans ought be concerned with appearing too cozy with Barrack Obama. Even appearing close to him, not to mention close enough to shake his hand appears to be the kiss of death politically.
It looks like they got some sage advice. The letter they sent to Rahm is basically saying start from scratch and we'll accept your invitation, otherwise the answer is no.
But that is just the House Republicans, who knows what the Senate will do. If McCain and Graham have anything to do with it, then I worry about the response. They always seem too eager to appear as the aisle crossers, as if it were some badge of honor.
Obama's playing chess (or trying, I hate to give him credit for anything), they better think a couple moves ahead before acting.
BHO is on TV now talking about healthcare saying they have to do this now because people are losing there healthcare insurance. THAT'S BECAUSE THEY ARE LOSING THEIR JOBS! He is beginning to remind me of Rose Nylund from the "Golden Girls" because he always has to "tell a story". He is in such denial that the people DO NOT want this sh**! That the people "just don't understand" that the government knows what is best for us. I hope the Republicans stand up and say HELL NO and to start from scratch and do it in small increments. Get people back to work and quit the spending!
I think short of a promise not to use reconciliation, the Republicans are crazy to attend his dog and pony show…
Republican cannot be sucked into the minutia of this bill's details. They need to hold the line that you cannot change without starting over. Far too many pages of loop holes and pay-offs. Oblamer will just politely LISTEN to the GOP points and just explain that they are all irrational, except for an item or two. After which he will claim a bipartisan result. Don't be fools for this tool.
HELL NO WE WON'T GO!!
RINO's beware the TEA party has you in their sights and you will not be spared by being on the endangered species list.
Because the end justifies the means…I can only assume?
Obama is obviously trying to lure the Republicans into a trap. The republicans need to be smart enough to anticipate the trap, and to hoist BHOzo by his own petard.
I am hopeful that not all the Republicans are too damn simple to see this! Only the damn RINO's who are hopefully on their way out ~
Count your fingers, your pores, your DNA and the money in your wallet.
Just look what Obama did for the Colts…The kiss of death indeed!
Let Obama and the Democrats hang themselves by staying as far away from Obama's agenda as possible.
Meeting Obama half way means we agree with his ideas to burden the country under debt deeper than the snow storms that have hit the beltway for the last week.
If they want to give Republicans a voice now, then pass tort reform as a stand alone bill, all by itself. If it passes, then go to another reform, like portability or buying across state lines.
But to shore up the current bills that have never come together into one single bill and put in one or two Republican ideas is suicide for any Republican that would vote for it.
The better option is just wait it out until after the November elections and then operate from a position of strength.
Doing it now with the Dems still holding a large majority is sheer stupidity.
The RNC is in a downward spiral. There are no "new" ideas from the Republicans. The majority of RNC legislators are actually part of what is wrong in Washington. For these members of Congress to really reform the legislative process, getting rid of earmarks and things of that nature would be to slice their own throats. What this country needs is for genuine patriots to take over Congress this election term and the White House in 2012. Thru Americans with American values running our country — what a concept! I have some ideas how the grassroots movement should progress on my blog: http://teaparty.yepperee.com drop in and see if you agree.
It worked (sort of) for Scott Cohen, Dem candidate for IL Lt Gov. His campaign was about JOBS. He didn't slam his opponent. He didn't make promises. He went out and held job fairs and bragged about his results. He said, "We can't wait until after the election to fix the unemployment problem."
And he won over a pack of party regulars.
And then the party forced him to resign over his personal baggage. (Ya' gotta' love the Chicago Machine when it gets going.)
People will buy a message of less taxation and regulation. And they need to see private sector use of the stimulus. all call for the return of manufacturing will also resonate with the public. In the process you'll expose the folly of democrat legislation.
I wonder if he visited John Murtha in the hospital…………………….?
I agree. Obamao is using the faux olive branch in an effort to make things appear bi-partisan. Fact is, the progressives and the more blue dogish democrats in both houses could not agree enough to pass anything. This is just an attempt to bait and switch.
Any wonder that our founding documents are so pithy. There is wisdom there. The deeper the grass the easier for snakes to live.
Has huffpo suggested yet that it was a TEA party doctor who had the 'slip of the knife'?
Wait for it, the accusation is coming!!
I'm OK with GOP working across the isle. I am against the President using them for photo-op when he has no desire to move right on his agenda.
"They are the party of HELL NO." Couldn't agree with you more!
The problem here is that the Republicans should know locally what is needed for their state and fight it on that platform. Being a party of no gets you some popular credit if people feel that the government is threatening their livelihoods, but having little in the way of proposals will also make the American people hate you more. I'm sure the once the Republicans show that they are the local representatives , not party of the political machine, they'll get the support they need.
there is a minefield to be navigated here…
Republicans have to help the man govern- if that is WHAT he intends on doing. To be obstructionist- with eight months until the midterms- would play into their hands. Particularly if they get tthe 'war' they so desperately want.
Conservatives are a little fat and sassy right now, and that is a BIG mistake.
This is a sophisticated and smart machine. Sure, you have your low life Chicago thug thing- but understand they are hired guns and not the Man Behind The Curtain. They have hundreds of millions of 'stimulus' money which was always intended as a 2010 reelection fund. They can mobilize tens of thousands of highly paid 'volunteers'
to rig the vote.
So, we must be cautious- and smart. The Obama 'brand' is not selling well. It can be defeated. It can also rise like the Phoenix from the ashes…
Republicans need to get out of the way and let the Democrats continue to commit political suicide. Don't meet with Obama, Reid or Pelosi. Obama has already said that he will not reset or start over on a new healthcare bill. Rather what he wants is cover for when the true devastation is revealed as further details emerge about this disasterous bill. He can't even get all the Democrats to go along with his crap plan to enslave another 1/6th of the US economy. Let them fight amongst themselves as they self-destruct. The American people demonstrate on a daily basis how much they hate this current marxist cabal and how much they want to be left alone to get themselves out of the mess this country is in. Stay away from any photo-op meeting with the community organizer!
I was off the grid for a few days. I didn't know until a few hours ago that Murtha had died. Hell, I just found out an hour ago who won the Super Bowl. I musta been the last person in the world to know. When I hibernate, it is a total news blackout.
Beware of the obamasoros monster it's cornered
The question for Obama and the Democrats has to be "why wait till now to invite us to the table?". They drafted the bill in secrecy. Tried on more than one occasion to pass the bill in secrecy. Made deals to buy votes in secrecy. Now that they no longer have a filibusterer proof majority they suddenly care what the Republicans think. What's wrong with this picture? Where was the consideration and respect when we submitted our alternative plans? Where was the willingness to compromise when we submitted our amendments?
The truth is that Dems are doing just as they have always done. They want to appear as though they are and have been bipartisan and willing to compromise but behind the scenes it's business as usual. It's as I have said from the beginning. If the democrats were really interested in a bipartisan effort they would have had the republicans invloved in the drafting of the bill from the get go. Instead they tried several times to force a vote before the republicans were even given time to read the bill.
Now, in an attempt to salvage all their hard work and scheming they will try one last time to buy the votes they need. If that doesn't work they will do what they do best and try and shame the republicans into complicancy.
Know your politicians. Study them, dissect them, learn everything you can about your Congressional representation. If they don't or haven't been meeting your standards and expectations, let them know at the polls in 2010.
What is happening behind the scene, throughout the country is going to make the election of true conservatives harder and harder.
12 Million additional voters are waiting in the wings to make sure of this
SI senor.
The Obama stimulus plan failed. So now we get to try the Republican plan: TAX CUTS. Cut capital gains tax rates,
corporate tax rates and some reduction of personal income tax rates. I think that the American public will think
that's fair.
Treat Barry like typhoid Mary, keep away, America is sold on the dud that this president is, and like the old sales technique, shut up, when you’ve closed the deal. As the press tries to label you as the party of no, simple answer, “somebody needs to say no!” …or as Rush says, “not only no, but hell no!” And if you see John McCain or Lindsay Graham reaching out for the other side, gang tackle them, and tie them up in the Senate basement…nobody will miss them. The wise man once said to paraphrase, “if the opposition is committing suicide, get out of the way!”
Trouble is that in each and every occassion that GOP reaches across that aisle, we the people lose. Look no further than McPain. Their idea of compromise is that we accept their side on anything. This is only a photo op and a 'gotcha' opportunity for Oblamer. Nothing and I do mean NOTHING will be gained from GOP participation in this farce. But to not just show up will play into their hands. We have to go there and make our stand and make the peoples opinion of this HC debacle clear and unmistakable. Unless and until they are willing to take on their own bought and paid for carve outs (unions, abortion, illegals,,,) there is no chance of any compromise.
In a way it is good that this meeting takes place.
How many Republicans act starry eyed in his presence may encourage an additional 10 to 15% more conservatives to come out and vote in November and hopefully put a couple of our long shots over the top.
Once that happens, the only hurdle left for us is to see how this new crop of Republicans conduct themselves in the next congressional sessions.
Excellent point. The Republicans should say "We are the party of the people, and when the people say 'No,' we say 'No." That puts the Dems on the defensive from the beginning.
I agree – there is a lot of moments that reaching out to Democrats was disapointing
And how many jobs were saved or created with MY money? Why is Napa built in a flood plain?
for GW, going along with Teddy on no child left behind, the GOP had as much of a chance as Mary Jo did. McCain and his 'gang of 8' kept GW from getting more good judges on the bench. Lindsey the loser and his pal John Fing Kerry with their bipartisan Cap-n-tax is just another bad idea soon to become law. I only need to kicked in the ba!!s once to know to cover myself.
Lucy Obama: Ok Charley, I'll hold the football and you kick it.
Charlie Republican: Duh… Ok.
Yeah, I know, I got it from another blog but I couldn't resist
ABANDON OBAMA CARE! Let's have an honest plan for ALL AMERICAN CITIZENS, a plan with patient's rights, no rationing, no cutting and no death panels (or whatever they are called now). Include ALL Americans, THAT INCLUDES OBAMA (if he is a citizen), OBAMA'S FAMILY, ALL OF CONGRESS and NO ILLEGALS. Since Obama and his puppet Congress have lost public trust it will need to be absolutely clear, transparent (recognize that word?) and open to public discussion until ALL problems are resolved!
Many Republicans are already skating on thin ice and IF ANY REPUBLICAN CAVES OR EVEN CONSIDERS OBAMA CARE HE WILL BE DOOMED!

Damn Right!
It's easy. If they are an incumbent, they need to go regardless of the R or D following their name. Locally donate to the candidate who can demonstrate knowledge of the Constitution, understands fiscal responsibility and can say NO to spending. Bonus points if they have a clear understanding that they work for us and we will no longer allow anyone we hire to ignore us.
OBAMA LIES OBAMA LIES. OBAMA LIES !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
OBAMA LIES OBAMA LIES !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's THEY'RE serious, not their serious. keep studying for that GED
Rasmussen – "75% Angry at Gov't Corruption", BHO poll numbers diving, Brown in Murtha out. Obama -Care ship is being crushed on the rocks, inundated with the tide going out. The rats are jumping off the deck and Skipper BHO wants the repubs to take a cruise with him while the ship is leaking like a sieve ready to be scuttled. The Captain needs to obfuscate responsibility in the crisis with a scapegoat other than George Bush to walk the plank. John Boehner is going to ride the wave and steam ahead in November toward Speaker of the House while the wind is at their back. Repubs will pull survivors out of the drink and stay clear from the sinking pirate ship.
The people have spoken and do not want the “Post Constitutional” Redistributed Hope and Change.
LOL Troll…Who are you to give anyone a grammar lesson? You frequently display a lack of basic grammar and punctuation. Your deftness of the English language is equivalent to that of a 4th grader. You have proven this time, after time, after time…Now Troll along, Troll…
Know your role, Troll…!
I read these fools were going to meet. What total idiots.
thats an Obama worthy excuse for being an idiot.
Troll…how original, did you think that up all by yourself lil girl or are you just copying someone again.
Only the rinos will show up for the Obama get togethers…….hopefully, the rest will see the trap and avoid it.
For the facts check out winetrain.com Learn about the Wine Train's place in the Napa flood control project.
The flood control project has been funded during the last 9 years by both Republican and Democratic administrations. The Sole Source contract was awarded during the Bush administration. It is not about politics but flooding.
Republicans need to let Obama sink in his own political ship….He is only using these meeting to pin blame on them latter.Childish,yes.Waste of our time, yes.Should republicans respond,no.Will Obama be happy as he gets last minute swimming lessons,no.
I don't really care what the corruptocrats do. Don't be a fool..It’s just a play, because both parties have come to realize that the Tea party is bigger than both of them and it's now about reining in the movement. Of course the r-corrupticians will try to "bring us under the tent" to fight the evil empire of demoncrats…God forbid you think for yourself.
Here is the incumbent candidate test: Who have you exposed for corruption? Show me when, where and who, show me the case. Otherwise beat it…. I have no use for any incumbent who walks around in that cesspool and can't see corruption. Can't see it, won't expose it, don't need you. Why the hell do I need a blind fool to teach me my colors?
As far as I am concerned you incumbents can all go to hell…we don't need you or want you. Enjoy your last few months and get ready for some prison time because there will be no claim of "executive privilege" to protect you when the people come for your seat…or ass as the case maybe!
"Obama’s job bill offers a mix of government responses, i.e. spending, and private incentives, i.e. tax credits"
Rubbish. Particulariszcredits" with multiple stringas attached.
They will prove to be about as meaningful as the derisory tax "cuts" (or rather 'refundable tax credits') in the Porkulus.
I'd also like a list of what EACH of the more than 100 boards and commissions are, and what their PURPOSE will be.
If the Republicans add a few good things to a 2000 page bad bill it will only end up being a 2002 page bad bill. The unnecessary, costly overhead, and unwarranted control over our health care decisions and options will still be there. And once an program like this passed, it won't be repealed! Their ship is sinking; don't throw them a "bi-partisan" life preserver.
Though I agree that the Republicans should be on the offense vs. defense, my sense is that is only one small part of the whole picture. I just cannot imagine any clear thinking American would continue to be fooled by anything this corrupt administration says and/or does at this point. Expose ALL of the lies and agendas, get under BO's skin which to me, is not difficult to do, pound away at the fundamental flaws with the policies and the ideology that drives the choices foisted upon us all. We are awake, we are listening and I for one, will not take anyone's words at face value at this most fragile time in our country's history. Oh and while they're at ti – expose all the double talk and the real hidden agenda – somehow I don't believe this will be too challenging.
The old College Love Bug, peace sign hippies, have grown older and are now in control of Americas political, entertainment, information and educational structure!!! A false god has been empowered on earth, their belief is that all should sacrifice to it, become a part of it, be nurtured by it, be stimulated by it (Some interpret stimulation as being repulsive, they feel violated (Like me)) succumb to it's every request, become one with it, no matter how much it hurts personally!! Don't be selfish, don't be "Racist", don't be Religious, there is no God, only us!!!! Wake up people, know your enemy!!!
Funny you should say that, I almost did myself. I said it yesterady in the Murtha thread, but figured I wouldn't harp on the dead to much. Even though Murtha was crooked like an oak limb, I thought I would give him a rest…For now anyway.
Color me old-fashioned. I want to know exactly what's in the health care 'policy'…just as I would if I were shopping for new insurance coverage directly from the insurance companies. That would include a list of covered expensed and a list of "exclusions". Also, co-pays, deductibles, etc. Then, I want to know what this lovely coverage will actually cost me. Not in the unfathomable realm of 'trillions', either. Rather, what will it cost me to cover my family on a per month basis. Without this information, the rest is smoke and mirros and no one with a lick of common sense would buy it! So to all the politicians out there….GET REAL! Once the public sees the real 'policy' and 'premiums' and co-pays/deductibles, I doubt anyone would be in favor of it or allow you to vote for it without losing your seat! That's true disclosure.
This ridiculous idea that you have to 'craft' the real bill AFTER it's passed is criminal, to put it nicely. I'm urging my congressman or senators to say Hell NO! to negotiations. It's a no-win situation for the American people.
There is factual inaccuracy with one point in this article. I work for the Napa Valley Wine Train, the "wine train" mentioned in this article.
First of all, the Wine Train has not received any stimulus money from the federal government. Secondly, the $54 million dollars is not going to "renovate" our track. It is being spent to complete a 9 year long Flood Control project designed to keep the CIty of Napa from flooding every couple of years.

The existing contract was awarded during the Bush administration and funded for about 10 million dollars. obama is NOT reaching out to the Republicans! Nor is he necessarily reaching out to the Democrats! He's reaching out only for the Progressives/Marxist! Although mostly Democratic, the Progressives(Marxist) also include Republicans, but I do not believe that there are enough Marxist Republicans to pass his Marxist Agenda constitutionally at this time. However, that does not mean that he will not try to "STOP" the 2010 election, using the courts to get his Marxist Agenda accomplished!
Good One ! Will remember that; it surely seems the key to setting the agenda for conversations —
2009 proves that big government doesn't work (look at the job(less) score)!
