How Many Fights Will Obama Pick With America?

Great leaders, when faced with a divided electorate, not to mention difficult economic times, use a limited agenda to forge consensus out of broken paradigms. Once they achieve an initial success, they seek a broader consensus. In the 1980’s Reagan faced a divided Republican Party and a fractured and dispirited nation. Concentrating on the prosperity issue and our national prestige, Reagan first brought Republicans together and then independents and even many Democrats. Indeed, so successful was Reagan at bringing people together, that in time he could rely on a group of Reagan Democrats. Few other Presidents have had such success at building consensus let alone are able to claim a voting block from the other party in their name.
There is little doubt that Obama faced a divided electorate when he first took office and a difficult economic climate. Rather than start with a limited agenda designed to build consensus, Obama did the opposite. Obama chased too many rabbits at once and preferred ideological fights over practical solutions. As a result, the Country is more divided than ever – not less.
The most recent manifestation of that divisive M.O. is the White House’s amazing decision to insist on a terror trial in New York. Of course, it remains a jarring ideological decision to treat KSM as a “criminal” versus the warring “terrorist” that he is. As I wrote, in my article Internment, CSI and Eric Holder’s Disarming of America, that decision will have profound negative consequences for decades to come. To the point of this article, Obama is compounding his initial divisive decision (treating him as a criminal) by fighting with New York over the place of the trial. It is a political fight which he cannot win regardless of the outcome of the trial.
In addition to that fight, Obama’s first year featured a huge and controversial agenda that has not served his Party or his Presidency well. Keep in mind that successful Presidents achieve but two, maybe three, lasting achievements during their terms – many less than that; hence the need for a targeted and consensus building agenda – not a controversial far-reaching agenda.
Out of the gate, this President chose controversy over consensus. His massive, $800 billion spending/stimulus bill divided Americans. To be sure, there is not a majority in this country for uncontrolled deficit spending. Indeed, the deficit is at the height of American worries and more Americans than not think the bill has not worked.
Next, Obama took on Cap and Trade. While it is unsurprising that those on the Left – who arrogantly think they can socially engineer the lives of free people also think they can engineer the climate of a 4.7 billion year old planet – there is little doubt that pushing that major agenda was not a consensus building maneuver. Witness the fate of that bill and the cries of moderate Democrats if you think otherwise.
From there, Obama pushed a massive ideological takeover of 17% of the US economy in the form of the Health Care bill. It has been anything but a consensus builder for the Democrats – ask Scott Brown if you are uncertain of that – not to mention the meteoric rise of the Tea Party.
As you can see, on the heels of a massive spending bill, Obama chased at least 3 major ideological rabbits, cap and trade, health care and redefining the war on terror– all within one year. Obama failed to build a consensus on any of those three let alone passed legislation establishing one of them – leaving Obama without a signature achievement at the outset of his Presidency – the time in which most Presidents achieve their success if at all.
Of course, Obama blames the problems he inherited for his troubles. Rather than looking to the economy he inherited, however, Obama should look at the divisive political climate he fostered for his failing polling numbers – much like Johnson did in 1966 and Clinton in 1994.
Although, after the first of the year, Obama promised to focus on jobs, his ridiculous fight with New York over terror trials, and his promise to continue pushing his health care take and cap and trade, demonstrates he is not up to the job of bringing this country together. It will be up to the Republicans to fill that leadership void in the 2010 elections.

Academics "IF YOU CAN"T DO, TEACH" I for one have learned enough! The Ivory tower types the "THE CHOSEN ONE" has surrounded himself with are leading us to distruction. They look down their noses at the unwashed masses (US) and know that they know better. They are convinced that they are saving us from ourselves, and that we will get used to the changes that they want to make to our (NOT THEIR) lives.
It seems the main problem is Obama, and his whole administration, are amateurs! Their lack of understanding what is important to the American people comes from their lack of contact with them prior to taking office. Filling his cabinet with a bunch of elite intellectuals, who think they know it all, is a huge mistake. Especially, since Obama himself has very limited experience in the 'every-day world', he should have chosen some 'common folk' to help guide him!
this president had no choice but to go for the whole enchilada. he was beholden to the radical left, and knew that he has a pretty short political window to shove as much thru as possible. couple the opportunity for advancing his radical agenda with the tactics of Saul Alinsky, and this is what you've got. true to form, the American People have roundly rejected this force feeding and will force the pendulum to the other side of the scale, with "how far" being the only thing left to be determined.

Divide and conquer – that's what I believe his agenda has to be. It's illogical at best, and intentional at worst, to divide an entire country, over pet projects that should not even be on the table! The funny thing is, if B.O. had spent the first year succesfully addressing the economy & job situations when he took office, he could be writing his own ticket during year 2, probably with bilateral support in some cases. What a community organizer does, is to take a group of people within a community andagitate them by defining other groups as working against them. The organizer finds and feeds that particular group'sfrustration and discontent, bringing it to a fever pitch in order to get the members of that group to stand up, go out and actively protest for change, by protesting against the other groups the organizer has polarized their emotions against.
So is it really any suprise that under this president, we have Americans fractured into groups, and the level of visceral responses between some of those groups? He's a national community organizer now, but he's playing a number of different groups at the same time, whipping them all up against the groups he's redefined the rest of America's citizens into.
And the result is a politically fractured country.
This will not change as long as he holds office, since he is ideologically driven, and ideologues don't change their belief system just because it's polling numbers drop…….
Because Europe, China and Japan all have them, and he wants America to look more like them.
Any president elected in 2008 regardless of party or ideology would have done some kind of a stimulus bill. It's Keynesian economics and it permeates both party establishments as well as the Federal Reserve. You guys just whine because of the things it was spent on. I imagine if it was spent on invading Iran you'd be perfectly happy.
And you keep calling the health care reform a "government takeover" as if repeating it ad nauseum will make it true. This is another giveaway to industry, just like almost every other bill that comes out of Congress. The insurance industry is guaranteed $30 billion and millions of new customers because we'll all be required to buy from them. What's so hard to understand about that? Democrats are in the pockets of industry just like Republicans.

Not to criticize your specific comments, but this sort of 'evaluation' of candidates is what got us in this mess. What do looks have to do with experience, integrity, and honesty.
Listen to their comments, ask questions on statements, get to the impact of their so-called/proposed policies, wonder what he is not saying, check what he is skirting, (Rev. Wright, Bill Ayers). He is not a Hollywood movie start, his/her poliies will impact our daily lives so we have to make sure we select the right person. Understand what he stands for !

Let me take a stab at this one… Blame the previous administration perhaps?
To put it bluntly, BHO tries to be a bully bad a$$ any time the cameras are rolling and he is pandering to a partisan group. When confronted with the truth, he immediately withdraws and stutters, stammers and looks pathetic. Simply put, he is a coward. His unwillingness to accept responsibility and lack of honesty is as clear as a blue sky. For these reasons, he has lost any chance of gaining trust and respect from the real people of this country… the ones who believe in our Constitution and the rights given to us by our Creator.
It is sad, indeed, that when I look back over the 12 presidents we have had during my lifetime, BHO is the only one I feel to be a real coward. Even Jimmah Cahter served in our Navy.

No truer words have been spoken about this broken presidency. What a shame, as he had a great opportunity to be not only the first black president, but one all could point to in accomplishments. I'm not saying everyone in America is, or was a Christian, It's just that they have enjoyed those freedoms and blessings of this heritage. Our country and laws were founded on Christian principles, and this is what they hate. Even Obama is now calling those ideas archaic. Their sinful Lifestyles and Pride are what blind them to what is actually happening. And the pit they dig for others is the pit they will fall into. This is what I believe is happening and it helps explain their behavior.

I agree with you completely. The next ten months will probably be the scariest we have seen in our history thus far. The left underestimated the power of special elections, we can thank God for that. It was a shock to them to loose the Massachusetts and because of it I fully expect them to double down. We must keep our eyes wide open and not let anything pass in Congress.
Once the pendulum does swing and conservatism takes back the power, we must consider how to deconstruct what has been put into place. If we do not, this movement will rear its ugly head again.
