Tea Parties, Third Parties and the Republican Party
by Thomas Del BeccaroThe struggles of the Democrats and the Republicans are making news. The Democrats are learning that it is far easier to make campaign promises than it is to govern. As for Republicans, the party that loses the Presidential election often spends the off-year attempting to refine its message if not find a new message and new messengers. In the watchful eye of 24/7 cable news channels and the Internet, however, such political soul searching can appear rather untidy. As the calendar turns, the process remains unresolved for Republicans to say the least. Worse than mere overexposure, according to Rasmussen polling, despite Obama’s falling polls and Democrat divisions, the Republican Party would fare worse in an upcoming election than the Tea Party – a “Third Party” that, as of yet, does not exist. It is no minor issue because with the help of Tea Party activists, Republicans certainly can beat Democrats next year – without them they may not.

It would seem evident to many that the Tea Party movement should be the natural ally of the Republican Party. After all, the issues that inspire most Tea Party activists should not be inimical to Republican Party leaders. However, the fact that the Tea Party movement is at odds with certain aspects of the Republican establishment belies the greater issue as to why the Tea Party movement – and its potential to be a 3rd Party movement – arose at all.
It is worthy, as part of this discussion, to note that the rise and fall of third party movements and candidates is directly tied to whether voters perceive the existing parties as being successful. In this context, successful means providing effective leadership on the major issues of the day.
The Republicans should well know this lesson. After all, the Republican Party came into being because the Whig Party of the 1850’s and 1860’s was perceived as not willing to provide effective leadership on the most divisive issue of the day – if not the most divisive issue ever: slavery. Appearing too accomodationist to many voters, a third major party came into being under the leadership of Lincoln and others: the Republican Party – a party that, in time, took a decisive stand against slavery.
More recently, Ross Perot ran twice for President and gave life to the Reform Party. It is more than arguable that Perot handed Bill Clinton the Presidency by drawing so many votes away from President Bush in 1992. But did he? As a matter of history, Perot was more of a symptom of failed leadership by Republicans than cause of Clinton’s victory. The errors of the Bush Administration gave rise to a perception that the Republican Party was the party of higher spending and higher tax rates – a policy that led to burgeoning deficits. Bush 41 was not perceived as a leader in the wake of breaking his “no new tax pledge” and the Democrats were not exactly considered leaders on how to handle the deficit either. It is on such political battlefields that disgruntled voters take interest in a third voice – in that case, Ross Perot and his Reform Party.
Of course, the John Anderson presidential run should be noted as well. There was little doubt that in 1979 and in the beginning of 1980, the public’s view of both the Democrat Party and the Republican Party had dimmed considerably. Amidst double-digit inflation and unemployment, 20+% interest rates, and little in the way of Republican Congressional leadership to contrast Jimmy Carter failings, John Anderson ran as an Independent candidate for President. He came out of the gate with 25% in the polls – 6% higher than Perot’s highest ever finish.
Yet Anderson wound up not winning a single precinct. Why? Because Ronald Reagan ran a stirring campaign behind the theme that “Government is not the solution to our problems. Government is the problem.” And with that, Reagan and his strong leadership and policies won two terms (three if you count Bush 41s’ first term) and there was no third party challenge until Bush Sr. ceded Reagan’s high ground of leadership as referenced above.
All of which brings us to the Tea Party movement.
The numbers of Independents voters is on the rise again. Voters everywhere believe the Democrat Party and the Republican Party are more partisan than effective. The Tea Party movement is an out-growth of that perception.
At its core, the Tea Party movement is a pro-liberty – limited government movement. Its activists continue to believe in Reagan’s cogent message about government. Beneath that over-arching theme, Tea Partiers by-in-large are motivated by four major issues. (1) excessive taxation, (2) out-of-control spending, (3) out of control Legislators who pass bills without reading them, and (4) the apparent lack of adherence/respect for our Constitution. None of those issues should be troublesome for the Republican establishment – yet there is anything but an easy alliance between the Tea Party movement and the Republican establishment. It is a wonder why that is so.
Excessive Taxation. The issue of burdensome taxation has motivated Americans from the time of the Boston Tea Party to today. Always a potent issue, many activists wonder why the Republican Establishment has lost their voice on this important issue. Keep in mind that the issue is not just that people don’t want to pay taxes because they are stingy. The issue is why aren’t Republican leaders making the case to the American people (1) that high tax rates defeat their own purpose (Keynes), (2) that “that our present tax system … exerts too heavy a drag on growth … siphons out of the private economy too large a share of personal and business purchasing power, [and] reduces the financial incentives for personal effort, investment, and risk-taking.” (Kennedy), or (3) that through tax relief we can grow the American economy (Reagan). Surely taking up that mantle – with clarity – is not a request that is too much for Tea Partiers to ask of Republican leaders.
Out-of-Control Spending. The issue of government waste and spending is of major concern to many activists around the country. Keep in mind that in 1964, the entire federal budget was roughly $130 billion and poverty was approximately 14%. The federal budget is nearly $4 trillion a year now. We currently make social welfare transfers of over $1 trillion per year. Yet the federal poverty rate remains around 14%. Disgruntled Tea Partiers (and Ron Paul supporters) know that intuitively even if they do not always know the statistics. Should not Republican leaders be exposing the stunning level of federal waste (including $1 in every $10 of Medicare spending) at every turn – even filibustering ever growing budgets which provide little return on investment? Is that request too much to ask? – let alone insisting they refrain from pork barreling themselves?
Reading the Bills. Federal legislation now exceeds 1,000 pages at a time. It is well beyond common knowledge that most politicians do not even read the bills upon which they vote. Given that so many congressmen and women are lawyers who would never expect their clients not to read the contracts they sign, is it really an exorbitant request of those same politicians to read bills before they bind us to legislation from which, incredibly, they often exempt themselves?
The Constitution. There can be little doubt that our Constitution is not interpreted as our Founders intended. Jefferson and Madison opined that the Constitution did not permit the Congress to tax people to build roads. Now, without so much as an amendment, we tax people to subsidize the purchase of cars that run on those roads built with tax dollars. In that light, many activists well understand Justice Scalia’s commentary that “The Constitution is not a living organism, it is a legal document. It says something and doesn’t say other things.” The question is whether Republican leaders believe the same or are willing to defend the same.
The reality of today is that the Tea Party movement is more than skeptical of whether the Republican establishment is willing to take a stand on those issues or whether they are more interested in playing Let’s Make a Deal with American principles. In other words, they do not believe that they are providing effective leadership on those important issues. Instead, they do things such as offering a Presidential candidate who wanted to buy up all the bad mortgages that government encouraged in the first place. A government response to a government problem – Reagan would not be pleased – and neither are Tea Partiers. If Republicans were providing effective leadership on those important issues, I would hazard a guess that there would not be a Tea Party movement today.
In the final analysis, Republicans never do so well as to defend freedom and the expense of government – when they run against City Hall instead of defending it. Not coincidentally, Americans never do so well as when freedom is protected from government. Reagan understood that and that is why he ran against the Washington establishment instead of encouraging it.
Unless Republicans regain that understanding, rather than winning next year with Tea Party support amidst the troubles of the Democrats, Republicans may well be alone wearing the Whigs of long ago.

The Republican party is a joke.
The Democrat party is an even bigger joke.
Yet acting in concert, the two have conspired for generations to keep a stranglehold on the balance of power. It is time for someone to come along with a new idea. It is time for a purge. It would prove cleansing………
The Republican Party is the only possible choice in the upcoming election. Get involved in the party. Run for office yourself if you don't like the candidates. DON'T dilute our collective ability to throw out these idiots by voting for some stupid third party covertly funded by chortling Democrats. Not voting and voting for losers helped get us into the mess we're in now. Let's stop complaining and start making the Republican Party what it should be and needs to be in order to safeguard our country.

The Tea Party is run by a bunch of Gutless Wonders who think walking on the edge is marching with their little signs like a bunch of aging Hippies. Thank God our Founders had more Nads then these wimps.
The Tea Party in Historic Context was out to cost the King far more then the little people he controlled. A Real Tea Party would say screw the hell out of you. 30 million of us will claim Max. Tax Deductions and NOT file on April 15th with the IRS. You can try to spend all of this money with out the windfalls of cash you theive from us. When you are ready to return to the Constitution which is still the Law of the Land and have an Amesty from IRS/ and Vladamire Obama in hand. Come talk to us. Until then, make like a fan and Blow Us.
Sorry, I a hurry and had to blow this out ASAP.
The tea party people appear to be conservative and libertarian in philosophy and mostly registered Republicans. They also seem to be very practical people. These are mainstream people who have generally ignored politics but are fed up with what has gone on. They don't seem to be third party types. They have already shown a willingness to work with and for Republicans who are like minded. Michelle Bachmann, Marco Rubio, and Sarah Palin are three examples of Republicans who get undivided loyalty from the tea party movement. Chris Christie and Bob McDonnell got huge cheers for their victories at the tea party rallies even though they are both relatively mainstream Republicans. As long as the Republicans listen to the tea party people, give tea party candidates a fair shake in primaries and avoid Dede Scozzafava mistakes they will get the tea party vote.
Im not concerned about "republicans". John Mcshame claims to be a republican. So did Chris Shayes, Dede Scuzzy, and Ray the Lahoodlum. Im an AMERICAN who values my freedom and my constitution. It is BUSINESS that runs this country-not government. If necessary dont pay taxes. Supporting someone like Rubio over the disgraceful Crist is a small step forward. Defunding the communist ACORN and THROWING SCUM LIKE HARRY GREED to the sharks is another option. Public humiliation for crooks like Rang Ho and Piglosi would be nice. The Tea Party movement needs to replace the republican party, not oppose it. Sort of like Palin-shed be a great kingmaker, im just not sold shes the queen quite yet. Im afraid the media has flogged the Arctic Fox with the Scarlet A.
We need another Ronald Reagan for 2012. The problem is that we don't have another Ronald Reagan.
A true Tea Party member said:
Ours was the first revolution in the history of mankind that truly reversed the course of government, and with three little words: 'We the people.' 'We the people' tell the government what to do, it doesn't tell us. 'We the people' are the driver, the government is the car. And we decide where it should go, and by what route, and how fast. Almost all the world's constitutions are documents in which governments tell the people what their privileges are. Our Constitution is a document in which 'We the people' tell the government what it is allowed to do. 'We the people' are free. This belief has been the underlying basis for everything I've tried to do these past eight years.
Ronald Reagan
This two party system is now a one party system that should be called the Insider Party. I will vote Republican in any general election but voting against an "insider" during the primary is mighty tempting.
It will be interesting to see how this all plays out. I am fearful the Teaparty movement will cause splitting of the votes and causing the same ole crap to be left in. Ross Perot was successful in this by getting Bill Clinton elected because of the votes he pulled away from 41. The one factor here that might make a difference this time is the shear anger that is out there with the run away spending, lack of maintaining the Constitution with every new bill that comes down the road, not reading the figgin bills, and the total disregard for the people that our government is suppose to be representing. My hope is the movement would overtake the Republican party and that would seal the deal in 2010 and 2012. I know I am working towards that on the local level, but if I sense any movement growing by leaps and bounds, I will jump ship in a second, especially if a Reagan does not show up on the scene.
We can all be like Ronald Reagan. Read him, study him, and understand him. That is where true power lives. "We the People"
In Democrat Primaries Democrats win. In Republican Primaries Democrats win. As long as the News Media can pick Bush over Forbes, McCain over Hunter or Tancrado, Bob Flipping Dole? The Democrats will continue to have a winner in the Democrat Primary and their winner in the Republican Primary.
This is why Republicans SUCK just a little less then the Democrats do.
The Tea Party should not go 3rd party and be Ross P. in each election cycle for the Democrats. The Tea Party should be an arm to endorse the people running for Office who will Govern by the Mandates of the Constitution.
Yet! He/she may show in the next year.
So you suggest that the GOP, with its own plethora of tax-and-spenders and pro-amnesty leaders, is serving the will of the people?
The real story isn't going to be the November 2010 elections, but the Republican primaries. The national Republican party has already endorsed moderate candidates who are running against viable conservatives in the primaries (see Senate races is FL, KY, CA.) If the national party suceeds in defeating these conservative candidates, it may be the beginning of the end for the Republican party.
For better or for worse our political system does not allow for a third party to exist for an extended time. It will either be absorbed, merged, or replaced. If the Repubs. keep moving to the center, they'll be replaced by the TEA party. Their only choice at that time will be to pull a Scozzafava and merge with the Dems.
I agree with your first paragraph, but disagree with your second paragraph. I'm tired of enabling RINOs because I'm afraid a Democrat will win. RINOs are spineless, gutless wonders that, unfortunately, rule the roost. Steele could have made a huge difference, but is showing no leadership whatsoever.
I live in OH, and the state GOP sucks just as badly. Can't support its own conservative candidates. Shows more loyalty towards its "farm system" of growing politicians instead of listening to their constituents. I'm done with the Ohio GOP. Steele, McCain, et al have me done with the national GOP. I now evaluate each candidate on their own merits, not because of their party affiliation.
Agreed Cowboy
What this country needs is one big enema
Like a two-headed snake, Democrats and Republicans represent the same broken political system. It's time for a new party of the people and for the people. Real honest people to lead our country not dishonest lawyers/politicians.
You have not read much of my writing over the years. The Republicans Suck almost as much as the Dems do. Why? See http://hotrod.blogtownhall.com/2008/12/16/conserv...
Solution: See http://hotrod.blogtownhall.com/2008/12/18/pump_an...
The national republican party has had it's head up it's butt for too long. They just don't get it; witness the recent election in upstate New York … Dee Dee Scozzafava? Really???
I am voting for a clean slate of new blood across the ballot. Those who are entrenched in DC (regardless of political stripe) are fatally infected with Potomac fever and meed to be sent home.
Wait a minute, let's not ignore the fact that 53% versus 46% of allegedly informed and responsible citizens voted for this socialist abomination. I'm not buying that anyone paying the slightest amount of attention couldn't have predicted correctly the outcome of Obama in the WH and a Dem majority in congress.
The mess we are in is bigger than the failure of the Republican party to ward off this socialist coup. The majority of our fellow citizens galloped over the edge with these socialists like mindless lemmings. Obama and Pelosi & Co are the convergence of the hubris and ignorance that has overtaken our country. Only until the misery index gets horrific will these mindless lemmings reconsider their actions.
A third party is a nice thought but it will by the numbers in every election cycle insure that the Democrats stay in power. A better plan is to rebuild the Republican party from the bottom up which is essentially happening. There is a local committee in every neighborhood, get out and join them.
A Truce? You're going to be all chummy with Harry? What the hell is wrong with you people, I knew the GOP was weak but are you F'ing kidding me?
Where is the reading of the bill that would take 24+ hours and make this a painful and remembered protest?
This is the most fight you have in you??? Your going to have a glass of nog with the fascists and call it quits?

This is not just MSNBC garbage, I heard Mitch mouth this obamanation with his own traitorous lips. You people are so fricking tone deaf that you all need to tossed out into the snow on your assess.
This is about GOP COWARDS whining about how you might all miss Christmas isnt it?
You should all be loaded into the back of a C130 next stop Kandahar, you worthless pieces of GARBAGE are not worthy to lick the lowest soldiers boots, do they get a couple of weeks off from the war? This is what we have for leadership?
SICKENING!
Purge the Rino's from the GOP, throw every dollar you can afford to true conservative candidates. Thank you God for making me a Floridian so I can be part of the Charlie Crist ouster!!
SICKENING!

We need cage fighters, not dried up pansies that think this is a country club spat over the color of the polo pony blankets.
Just bizzare….
Red Bill you are right, if Steele and Mr.big tent Gingrich don't play ball, they will get run over by a train, count on it. Don't take my word for it look at the polls. The GOP wears the Scarlet Letter of Red Ink just like the Marxist DNC. They are on houser arrest with the real conservatives and will be on a very short leash…
"The Democrats are learning that it is far easier to make campaign promises than it is to govern."
Oh, just shut the fuck up! The judgmental bullshit that spews from your mouth sickens me…
This is the liberal revolution… get down with it or get out! And chop that disgusting 70's white-man fro in the process.
Both parties are jokes, the notion that somehow we are waiting for their leadership is disgusting…
The People lead, the representatives follow, plain and simple, something that hasn't happened for ages.
The message for me as a "Tea Party Activist" is simple…
"Scale Back Everything. You have overreached and I am about to slap the crap out of you."
Hey, big blowhard, that works only if you are self-employed, most of us aren't. How's that going to work when for most of us taxes have been collected as a payroll deduction? There is no option. The government has your money whether you file or not.
This is why i won't get on board with the republicans. Its all about getting back in power, i don't think they really care how they get it.
I've been a strong supporter of the St. Louis tea party effort since March, and I agree with just about everything they represent, but, recently the guy heading up that effort was making the case on why tea partiers should take over the republican party as opposed to starting a 3rd party. I could not disagree more, and if that's the way they want to go ( which is certainly their choice ), they'll lose some support. People need to understand that not only are Republicans not protecting people's rights, but the Democrats didn't plant beans from Jack's magic bean stalk last year to grow themselves a victory. This has been 4 decades ( arguably more ) in the making. They worked hard at this, and conservatives need to do the same. My wife and I talk about this with some frequency. I would rather plant the seeds now, and take a near-term hit, than try to shove a bunch of politicians into office that make good promises, but don't deliver. If the tea parties give in to the republicans, it's all over.
The Republican Party belongs to Conservatives. Let the RINOs go with the flow of Conservatives or go start their own Party. Would you come home to your house after being gone for the weekend to find some one has moved into your spare room and say OK I will just move someplace else? Heck NO! You would grab them by the collar and throw them out of YOUR HOUSE!
Take your own party back. Gez. The Republican Party belongs to Conservatives period.
Ya, keep marching with your signs once every sixty days like a bunch of aging Hippies. The Obama, Reid, PaLOUSY Train has run you folks over and could not care two licks about your signs. The News Media have no respect for you and so not even report your numbers at these parties you throw half of the time.
Get on the bandwagon with some teeth i,e, quit sending Gov. your money or stand around with your signs. You make the call.
The Tea Partiers are actually libertarians, they just don't know it. Small government, less spending, more freedoms, and a return to the constitution are all stalwart policies of libertarians. As an ex GOP card holder, I will never ever vote for a traditional machine republican again in my life even if its to prevent people like Obama from getting in office. If we vote for the lesser of two evils, we only get evil and the voters lose. We must vote in the person we want to govern us, regardless of his 'perceived' electability.
For me, of course, that man is Ron Paul. If the GOP promotes Palin, they will most certainly seal Obama's reelection.
A 3rd party is historically a bad idea, but their is precedent like the author said, and it may be time, we will have to see its up to the GOP leadership in the end to decide if it's going to be ruined or not.
I still think the tea party is the way to force the GOP to uphold constitutional principles by choosing candidates that wont play games where possible.
That means we have to be willing to hold the GOP's feet to the fire, but it also means burning them with it if nessecary.
http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2009/12/22...
The above s is not what a warrior does, this is what a lawyer does when they think it's "Inevitable" they go off and have cocktails witht he opposition.
No one will blame the GOP if they fail, they can hardly force the issue, but we will if they give up, and giving up is what they seem to do best these days.
This means that if they don't hear us that they should be doomed, it means that 2010 might be lost and I really dont want to think about that, so yes take over is the sane option and we need to be serious about that effort.

I haven't read any of your blog posts. My next visit will be my first.
Well said Dave, a merge of the tea party into the republican party would be a huge failure. Rest assured the GOP Palinites are working on doing just that, we just have to resist it. Great point on the near term hurt required for positive long term growth. Obama's administration is actually doing more for freedom, by inspiring Americans to ask tough questions about the constitution and learn about the freedoms he's taking away. I think this will eventually lead to a revitalization of the American man, but its going to suck for a bit.
This happens regularly in OH. Yet a conservative acquaintance of mine in the local GOP cannot understand why I won't support the party.
Dems and Reps no longer have wholesale differences, their disagreements are merely nuances. The Tea Party comes in second place because the Republican Party no longer represents conservative values, no matter what the platform says.
No, it's not. Try living in OH, where tenure in the party is more important than values and platform.
Look at the Tea is way. Why don't I see 912 numbers on half the cars on the road? A Ribbon? Anything? Are you sure these people exist? Maybe they are secret agents out there hiding in the shadows?
Marching with sings like aging Hippies is something the Tea Party has done well. Other then that they are Tea Party who?
Grow a set of Nads or quit sniveling. Take on the Tax IRS issue I have been writing to you about for months now as a plan B or continue down the path of being run over. Help Conservatives take back to Republican Party which belongs to us or move out of the way and let us do it.
Hey Chuckles, Do you tell your employer how many Tax Deductions you are going to take or does your Nanny do that for you? Do you file with the IRS on April 15th? Well if 30 million people don't. Do those in Government count on that windfall each tax day? Do you see it now? If you want a real Tea Party then protest with your Tax Dollars.
If the republican party belonged to you, then why did you let it go? Why a big-tent party? The republican party is done. They're just as crooked as the democrats, always have been and always will be. You complain that tea parties have done nothing, but what has Michael Steele done? The Tea parties bumped the republican off the ticket in NY 23. That's one for us.
We're basically on the same page. I'm not advocating slavish devotion to a party. I'm pointing out the practical reality that a serious third party effort is what the socialists are hoping and praying for. A divided opposition vote is the Democrats only realistic path to retain power – at least in the House. We cannot allow this to happen. Complaining on the sidelines about how the GOP stinks will only help our opponents. That is the bottom line.
Given the stakes we have to work with what we have. The GOP is screwed up and many of the leaders are RINOs. We need to replace them with candidates who share Tea Party values. Like you, I have much hope that the Tea Party movement (and the obvious reality that Obama and the socialists are a clear and present danger to the country) will help us get candidates that we will be proud to vote for.
We have a number of good conservative republicans in office, keep Coburn, DeMint, Bachman etc., and get rid of the arrogant RINO's. I've followed ACORN and SEIU. They take their dictates from the Dims who tell them who they want in office. Over the last 4-5 yrs they've all been progressives which is why it's full of them today including the schools. They started local and then went national. ACORN ALSO LOBBY ON OUR DIME!!! They also have people on hand ready to go intimidate and blackmail rich folk and end up with millions in bribe money. They're difficult to counter as most of ;us are out working. We need Conservatives in there to counter these lefties, and we need ACORN defunded from our tax dollars. Why should my tax dollars go towards progressives who support abortions?
Wow. The panic over 2010 is clearly affecting your mind.
We have no lobby therefore depending on our elected representatives. They want to play nice-nice with these leftie cut-throats then out they go. Why wasn't ACORN defunded by the Repubs long ago for heaven's sake…
As I said before. The Republican Party belongs to Conservatives. Conservatives need to take it back. If the Tea Party is not willing to help Conservative do it. Then move out of the way and do not help Democrats win like Ross P.
If you do not like who the RNC runs as in District 23. Don't endorse them. If you see a Conservative running on the Republican Ticket then endorse him. The Tea Party could swing elections and can Sarah Palin. There are Kings and King Makers. The Tea Party could be a King Maker and winners at the same time.
Where is the Tea Party? ACORN is being funded with Tax Dollars. I hear the Glenn Becks, Big Gov, Rush, Hannity, all kinds of Republicans screaming from the Mountian Tops. Where has the Tea Party been with their Signs? There are ACORN Offices all of the Country. It is not like all the Tea Party people have to drive across the country and meet in one place.
ACCORDING TO THE CONSTITUTION of THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA:
The Legislative Branch is crooked. The Executive Branch and it's supplicant Federal Bureaucracy are crooked. The Judicial Branch is crooked and The Supreme Court is about to be packed. The only straight thing remaining in the Government of this Republic is its Constitution itself. Hopefully when the dust settles there will be someone left alive who can read what it says and discern the Spirit of its intent.
My goal is to fight incumbents.
I live in a republican district with a republican congressman. I'm going to register as a republican so that I can vote against the current republican (who voted for lots of pork over the last decade or so) and vote for any republican challenger who will promise to limit spending, taxes, read the bills, and move towards the constitution. In the general election, I will give the democrat a fair chance only if they promise to ignore the national democratic party and vote the will of their constituents. Likewise, I want a republican representative that will represent their constituents and not the national republican party.
Finally, I will look carefully at 3rd party candidates and vote for the best 3rd party candidate if neither the democrat or republican candidates will fight against a big government. Politicians trying to get elected will respond to opposition as well as lack of support. Once you have given you support, the politicians tend to ignore you.
Because the Republicans suck too, they are not Kings, Bush -elected by Leftwingnut Media would not use veto. Republicans could not even stop the train wreck being Fannie and Freedie. They never had 60 votes in the Senate.
sorry half of tea and 912 are independents.. and us independents are not caving in to the save the GOP scam. We might be forced to vote GOP, but the end is near for the party system. GOP will fail again.
to win you need more money than the chamber of commerce members. the system is designed for re-election..there is no saving a corrupt system
the republican lost because they are corrupt. clinton won because the system is rigged against any other party movement.. the system the allies or in this case axis of evil government parties built it together.. They destroyed representation to protect their power. So it was the republicans that elected clinton.
I was a republican until Bush pushed TARP and other things; became a registered Libertarian for a year; and finally settled on Independent because the party system is the problem.
Good post… the only way to beat the two axis government parties is to register unaffiliated and demand real change in the election process. Gerrymandering, party affiliation on voter registration and on ballot. Contributions only from district voters no pac money .. End taxpayer fund of the parties. This list goes on.
save the GOP?? the two government parties caused this mess and they can not and will not save us.
"The Democrats are learning that it is far easier to make campaign promises than it is to govern."
LIBERAL CONSPIRACY!: http://www.liberalconspiracy.org/2009/08/14/uk-v-...
As a tea and a 912.. I reject both government parties for they are the problem. The no party system is growing and it is the only real answer to representation problem.
The GOP is fighting back? … Where was the speeches you have gone to far.. Where were the amendments that congress receive secret service protection. It is clear congress no longer cares about the constitution or it’s own rules.. The peoples’ sentiment is not being echoed by our representatives.. where is the anger and the passionate outrage? The anger that puts fear into men’s hearts. The GOP is playing by rules of the ridiculous and pitiful.. This was a fight you get up in their face and make them understand this is a line that can’t be crossed. The democrats are playing union politics and kicking the GOP rear.. In UNION politics you get in their face and see who is a man. The people like union members do not matter for this is raw power and if you can’t mobilize the people by any means necessary you lose.
Not so. The republican party does not belong to conservatives, it belongs to whoever voters vote for that run under the republican ticket. Just because a party is formed under certain values and principles doesn't mean any type of entitlement if the politicians in that party don't reflect those values. If you want to use that logic, democrats had blue dogs and dixiecrats who were conservative, so why does the democratic party not belong to them? The party doesn't mean anything. The advantage the tea parties have, this year, is that the movement is just starting, so there's no baseline for comparison. In 10 years, the tea party could end up just as corrupt as the 2 current parties. NY 23 was an endorsement on the movement, not the man. Doug Hoffman was an idiot. Anyone who wants to run for public office and not attend a single debate has no business running. Period. What NY 23 did was make a statement, which was "If we want someone out, we have to muscle to move them out". The republican party has nothing going for it, except 2, maybe 3 people between both houses. Interestingly enough, the republican party began as a splinter from another established party, and it worked. There's no reason a 3rd party cannot work today. You don't have to vote republican to establish a conservative majority. The King is nowhere near as important as the King Maker. Yes, Palin can swing elections, and I hope she swings the next 2, but don't think for a second the RNC will back her for anything, even though she carries their card. The tea parties will back her, and she knows that.
ss794…good …..the party system has destroyed representation in our election process and they made a re-election process.
We need "Mr Smith" (movie)
That fought for the small people.
The only thing that I see Dems and Rep figting for are how to line their pockets.
Hope that the Tea Party takes roots to the point we have a third party.
If not that the Tea Party will make both sides concerened that they can not promise
and NOT deliver on their campain promices.

These are good points. As a former Santa Cruz Democrat, who voted independent in 08, the idea of a 3rd party excites me, but I also fear that such will keep the current crooks in power. Yet, when I hear GOP cheerleaders like Mike Gallgher get into the religious/abortion issues, I fear voting GOP. I don't know how to balance those issues, without giving in to my own beliefs. I think there are many like me that favor smaller government, reasonable/lower taxes that are spent wisely, and keeping the government out of our personal lives. I agree with many posts that God has been part of the county, but I cringe at the fringe right when it becomes "THE" issue. I think abortion, the legalization of marijuana, bulding roads, etc are all state issues. Yet, I don't see how the GOP will ever agree, and wonder if a 3rd party is the answer. But then….I don't think the country can go 7 more years of Obama and still be the USA. I compromised and voted for McCain in 2008, "the lessor of two evils," and it got me nothing. Do I do it in 2012 again, or do I vote with my heart and soul?
What would happen with the big government types in control.
A Federal education plan written by Ted Kennedy?
A massive increase in Medicare spending?
A drastic crack down on the God given rights of free men?
Invite the bottom feeders from every 3rd world hellhole on the planet?
Wars not for American interests but for nation building?
Oh wait, the Republicans were in charge for all of those.
Not one damn bit of difference between the two parties.
I tend to think it was the Moderates that move back and forth between parties that elected Clinton. My concern about a third party is not having enough momentum to take the race. IMHO we need to start by moving into the local levels of the GOP and moving it to incorporate the values of the Teaparty movement, because they are truly what was once the core values of the GOP. We need to kick the Lindsey Gramnesties out and there are plenty of them. Those that are not showing fiscal responsibility need to be on their asses out the door…and finally if there is a ground swell that looks promising with a third party I will be there.
Trust in this government has left the building and isn't coming back. Now is the time to water the tree of liberty and go back to square one.
answer me this how does saving the gop effect a democratic district? It don't …they will elect democrats..I amd not moderate but I voted for ross, so there goes your theory. I would say the lefties voted for the republicans.
a thumb? no debate? I expect this type of crap from the libs.. I thought you republicans wanted to save your party you can't do that unless you stand up and debate and convince independents like me they are worth saving.
What will merging the Tea Party and Repub party do you may ask… well it will produce more RINO's. Pull your heads from your butts people… how do you think you got into this mess as it is? Most politicians start off with the same "go get em' " attitude from the get go but get sucked into the power structure that is the parties. Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely… the party leaders have tons of power but they don't run the country…. so where does that power come from? The people?? HA!!! If you believe that then you're an idiot. Wakey Wakey…. might want to start thinking about who controls the money supply… seeing how money = representation of your time and what your time is worth… guess who controls your "TIME". (hint hint… the federal reserve) Want to take back your country??? Start with repealing the federal reserve act and making CONGRESS the ones who control the money supply (as was written in the constitution) so they are accountable to "WE THE PEOPLE".
Ladies and gentlemen, comment would be superfluous… Behold the pathetic enemy!
Here here!
goo.. good to see you..
And you, fellow independent!
There is no end in sight to the great and growing wickedness that is called America. There is little love for freedom and no love for God. We are a damned people and will pay a severe price for what we have become.
Freedom inhabits the hearts and minds of those who will stand up and defend it from their enemies.
The Republicans are voting against Obama!!!! Chose sides wisely. Vote for a third party. I recommend Libertarian because that's the greatest form of government ever imagined by a genius.
Reagan's the man, but I say we should all just be the good part of Ronald Reagan becuase I could go without all of that losing your mind stuff. I wanna be a more religious, even more right-wing, Ronald Reagan!
In the article (under Reading the Bills) the author states:
"Given that so many congressmen and women are lawyers who would never expect their clients not to read the contracts they sign, is it really…"
Not sure what planet this journalist is on, but that IS EXACTLY why they do NOT read their Bills. MOST of their clients did not read the contracts, because that's why the client hired the lawyer in the first place! LOBBYISTS write the bills.
Thus, these politicians (lawyers) write and pass all sorts of legislation to undermine the Constitution and the citizens, knowing full well that it will never be read UNTIL actual enforcement, taxation, and usurpation of our rights is desired.
At this time a third party is a bad idea. There is a solid base within The Republican Party (The House Republicans) who seem to get it and are fighting the good fight. The Republican Party at least sees the Tea Party Movement for what it is, and not AstroTurf as Pelosi accused them of. The American People ARE involved and will be heard big time in 2010 and we won't need a third party to do it. Just make sure we elect the right people in the Primary (such as Chuck DeVore).
we will win this fight one person at a time.. long live freedom.
It all comes back on We the People…
our parties are like they are because we ALLOWED THEM TO BE. We ABDICATED our FULL TIME ROLE, by only caring only during elections, and only on the biggies. How much different would America look if OUR SCHOOLS WEREN'T TURNING OUT MARXISTS? I'd say local and state public education seats are maybe MORE IMPORTANT than congress/senate/president.
No one is going to fix it but us.
It doesn't matter if there are two parties or 47…every single one can be corrupt. A third party assures nothing.
I am a Tea Party organizer who PERSONALLY advocates taking back the party whose PLATFORM reflects our views. But it takes WORK…and most people aren't ready to do the work, it's easier to blame everyone else.
With that said, I also make it VERY CLEAR that I will never vote for a RINO as long as I live. So, if the "machine" keeps forwarding them, yes, the GOP will become irrelevant. And in that case, America is lost to the Marxists…and the People will have to either ACCEPT subjugation, or be willing to really *fight* for it. (And I don't mean politically.)
PS- I agree with GOPsaver. A tax revolt is in order (claim the max, and then either DON'T FILE, or send an IOU)…I have called for that since last May. They can't fund without OUR MONEY. DEFUND THEM! Unfortunately, most people WILL NOT pledge their "life, FORTUNE, and sacred honor" to the cause. Our oppressors (in both parties) know that…what did Franklin say about security for liberty? United we WOULD stand…
Laura,
Thank YOU! I have been screaming such from the Mountain Tops but it is just too hard for people to grasp.
Also note that the Banks and Wallstreet could not get Obama and the Democrats in power fast enough. I would also say to those whom are negative with their home equity to stop payments until the Banks put presure onto Wallstreet and the Banks to get their guy they put in the Whitehouse to knock it off. There are 10 million homes lined up to Foreclose on coming down the pike soon. The Banks don't want your homes in which you are upside down on.
Living in California. I have seen the rath of democrats and the Cowards in the Republican Party like Gov. Arnold first hand. I have been told by the powers on the radio and in the Republican party that Arnold S. was the ONLY way and Tom McClintock could never win. I fought them then just as I try to talk some sense into the Tea Party now. Next year the American people will have to ask is California to big to fail because the State will BK.
I have given you Folks an additional option to surrender or a Fighting war for your rights with Guns.
This administration is RULING not governing. There is a difference. Our representatives in Washington work for us, not that we work for them..but they now think they have a mandate to change our government to Socialism, no matter what the people want…they have this idea that "they know better". They are wrong, and this November 2010 they will get a rude awakening. Did anyone hear the blockbuster news about what Senator DeMint found in the Reid Bill? Shocking and unconstutional. Buried in this sham of a bill is a provision that says: This bill cannot be changed or amended by the Congress..Can you imagine the nerve of these thugs that Reid had the nerve to put this in the bill? What else is in this bill? What shocking details are buried in the 2000 pages of this monstrosity? We need some answers from the Senate, Reid and his cohorts before they do the final vote! This is explosive! I don't see the news media picking this up. This bill I believe is unconstitional and will be fought in the courts. Stay tuned. Some Christmas present…imagine getting a Christmas present that you paid for? They have some nerve.
a few comments down the page I wrote:
if Steele and Mr.big tent Gingrich don't play ball in the primaries, they will get run over by a train, count on it. Don't take my word for it look at the polls. The GOP wears the Scarlet Letter of Red Ink just like the Marxist infected DNC. They are on house arrest with the real conservatives and will be on a very short leash…
Anyone who still thinks in terms of two parties, you are very mistaken. For three reasons…
One is the internet, the major sites, you all know who they are, will serve as a Hub for all local organisations to link to, this will allow for effective command and control.
Two is intensity, people in America are very worried about their kids and grandchildren, need I say more?
Three is money, there will be plenty of that I am sure due to the above factors.
So Steele, the ball is in your court…
Not ONE difference? Then WHO exactly is standing up in unison against this healthcare Bill? Any Republicans voting for it but the two known RINOS from Maine? Get real.
@ GOPsaver- I also live in California, a native, I voted for McClintock…and the CRP and NRSC will back Meg Whitman and Carly Fiorina…just watch. I'm watching (former Republican, who knows she would never get GOP backing and lose the primary) AIP Gov candidate Chelene Nightingale now. SHE might be the one I vote for and support.
But back to schools: Diane Lenning is our girl for state superintendent of public education!
Senate: Chuck DeVore
Dist 51: Nick Popaditch
Oh, and help us with this!!: CA constitutional amendment to PROHIBIT the deduction of POLITICAL ACTION money from (Union) public employees checks: http;//unplugthepoliticalmachine.org (If you aren't already.)
There are some candles people…quit cursing the darkness and get off your butts and WORK.
Save us the hyperbole that the "the two government parties caused this mess". Are you seriously suggesting that the Republicans have supported socialized medicine, Cap n Trade and all of the other Dem socialism excesses? Your fellow Americans by a majority margin voted for this crap and the few RINO's not holding to the pary's principles.
How is this for a reality check , it seems the guy next door failed you more then the Republican party.
Of course, to the Judiciary, the Law is the word. As Law is applied with the hand of equality it must refer to something objective to all. There are difficulties of course when weighing one wording against another (higher)… but this is their business.
Yet, for the people, and a designer, we of course also hold dearly the Ideas/Concepts/Principles behind the document which is their representation. These things live in our hearts and guide us in our daily lives and are the true core of this nation, if you want to call it that.
And, it will be these Ideas that will also be the guide in creating new Words, when they are, and if need be, which the Judiciary would again be tasked with application, after they are first proclaimed publicly to all.
OH! and PS- the Democrats have their own problems on the party unity front:
"House Dem blames leaders for party switch"
http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1209/30896.h...
Him and how many others? Not to mention the many disenfranchised Democrats that are in the Tea Party movement already??
good post..steele is going to the left.. they are picking so called moderates every where.
I'll tell you why tea party types don't trust Republicans: you guys don't believe in liberty. You don't believe in limited government. You don't believe that the purpose of government is to serve the people. You don't believe you are limited by what the Constitution says.
What you believe in is power. You believe in control. You believe the purpose of government is to further your particular social philosophies. You believe that government ought to be expanded to implement those philosophies as regulations. You believe that government ought to use businesses to achieve your ends, and vice versa. You believe that the Constitution is whatever you can get your favored justices to say it is.
A republican thumber.. and I thought you going convince me to save the republicans?? such hate ..

Just be the good part of Ronald Reagan?"I wanna' be a more religious, even more right-wing, Ronald Reagan"? You couldn't hold Ron's jockstrap, playa' wannabe.
Laura,
Are you on the Linkedin Network? Consider joining California Republicans and GOPsavers Groups.
As for http;//unplugthepoliticalmachine.org I did not know about it until now.
Thanks.
D.J.
The last slim hope for this country is this grass roots conservative movement sweeping the country. I scares me the number of clearly intellegent people who believe all they need is to get the GOP back in office! That scares me much more than anything else. If they don't wake up and start supporting the Mark Rubios, Rans Pauls and Doug Hoffmans we might as well just call in the Bilderbergs and tell them thay can have our country as we don't have what it takes to stand up for our kids and fight this evil. The very definition of insanity is doing the same wrong thing over and over again…I don't give a damn about the GOP, I do feel as Thomas Jefferson said… When the people fear their government, there is tyranny; when the government fears the people, there is liberty.
