LA Forces Condoms onto Porn Actors! (Nanny of the Month, Jan 2012)

by Reason TV

This month’s killjoys are bent on making the Big Apple dry (or not?), and banning electronic (a.k.a. “fake”) cigarettes from public places (wait, isn’t the anti-smoking movement supposed to help addicts kick the habit?).

But the new year’s top slot goes to the City of Angels mayor who’s cracking down on those naughty devils in the adult film industry by mandating that actors wear condoms (what could possibly go wrong?).

Presenting Reason.tv’s Nanny of the Month for January 2012: Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa!

“Nanny of the Month” is written and produced by Ted Balaker. Opening animation by Meredith Bragg.

Crackdowns on Consensual Sex, Veggies, and more! Nanny of the Year (2011)

by Reason TV

They touch our lives in so many ways, and Reason.tv kicks off awards season by acknowledging those who have devoted their lives to minding other people’s business.

Live (to tape) from the fourth floor of the Sepulveda Center in Los Angeles, it’s the third annual 2011 Nanny of the Year Awards!

These United States have produced many worthy nominees in 2011. Who could forget the city planner who threatened a woman with 93 days behind bars for growing vegetables or the state senator who did his best to outlaw crossing the street while listening to an iPod (shortly before pleading guilty to federal corruption charges).

But this year the golden Nanny goes to the Wolverine state pol who’s bent on making most any kind of teacher-student sex–not just a fireable offense, but a felony, even if the student is older than age 18 or even if teacher and student are middle-aged. (And, in an apparent attempt to secure nanny gold, our winner is also fighting to force school kids to recite the pledge in front of genuine made-in-America flags.)

Nanny of the Month, Oct. 2011: Euro-Weenies Ban Free-Range Kids!

by Reason TV

It turns out minding other people’s business is a worldwide affliction. In this very special edition of Nanny of the Month, we explore nannyism across the pond. Fat taxes are all the rage in Europe. After the skinny Danes slapped a tax on foods high in saturated fats, other European pols—including British Prime Minister David Cameron—have considered following suit. In Australia’s Northern Territory, they’re bringing alcohol prohibition back—incrementally, that is—by barring problem drinkers from buying grog. What could possibly go wrong?

But in the first-ever Nanny of the Month Global Edition, top dishonors go to the European Union’s control freaks who have cracked down on free-range kids, slapping regulations on everything from baby rattlers (which have brand-new noise restrictions) to blowing up balloons (not to be done by tots under age eight!). Couple Heading to Court after Hosting Home Bible Study! (Nanny of the Month, Sept 2011)

by Reason TV

Nanny of the Month turns two-years-old this October, and the busybodies who mind your own business show no signs of letting up.

Take formerly dog-friendly New York City which has banished man’s best friend from any establishment that serves food or alcohol (and that includes outdoor patios!). Then there’s Michigan Gov. Rick Snyner who’s tackling childhood obesity by introducing a statewide database to keep anonymous tabs on kiddies’ weight.

But the this very special nanny comes to us from a California city that is fighting (and fining) a couple that hosts Bible studies at home. Presenting Reason.tv’s Nanny of the Month for September 2011: San Juan Capistrano City Attorney Omar Sandoval!

The city slapped Chuck and Stephanie Fromm with fines totalling $300 for violating a municipal code which prohibits religious, fraternal, or nonprofit organizations from meeting on residential property without a conditional use permit (CUP). The Fromm’s gatherings can attract as many as 50 people and the city says that causes parking problems, but the Fromm’s disagree saying there is plenty of parking in their semi-rural neighborhood where large homes sit on even larger lots (the Fromm’s lot includes a corral, barn, and large lawn). The Fromms have held their gatherings since 1994 and say their neighbors support them, except for one woman whose recent complaint sparked city action.

Michigan Bar Owners Ban Lawmakers for Banning Smoking! (Nanny of the Month, Aug 2011)

by Reason TV

They’re banning pet pigs in St, Charles, Missouri (even small, hypoallergenic ones like Pepper!) and Nice Cream in Illinois (even though it’s packed with natural ingredients and the owner says its bacterial levels are well below state-approved levels!), but neither can claim the top slot because, well, this time Nanny of the Month is doing something different…

For the first time ever Nanny of the Month is cheering a ban.

That’s right, starting September 1 , more than 500 Michigan restaurant and bar owners will begin turning state lawmakers away from their establishments. State Senator So-and-so wants a brew? Too bad. Politicians won’t be served until they revisit the state’s 2010 smoking ban, which, owners say, has devastated business, and left bars like Sporty O’Tooles on the verge of collapse.

Plant a Garden, Go to Jail for 93-days?! Nanny of the Month (July 2011)

by Reason TV

They’re cracking down on food trucks in St. Louis and busting those who bust a sag in Collinsville, Illinois, but the nation’s top nanny is the Detroit-area scold who just can’t stand front-yard vegetable gardens.

Last year a Georgia man who committed a similar offense faced only fines, but not Julie Bass, who was looking at 93-days in the slammer for her veggie violation.

Presenting Reason.tv’s Nanny of the Month for July 2011: Oak Park, Michigan City Planner Kevin Rulkowski!

Obama Figures Out How to Create Jobs! (in Brazil, Saudi Arabia, Russia…)

by Ted Balaker

Obama’s job-creation bag of tricks is just about empty (anyone up for another stimulus? cash for clunkers redux?) and the unemployment rate stands at 9.2 percent, two years after the recession officially ended.

Maybe it’s time to try something a tad more straightforward, like making use of the massive amount of oil and natural gas sitting beneath America’s western sates. How much are we talking? According to a new report from Western Energy Alliance, it’s more than the US imports from Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Kuwait, Venezuela, Algeria, Nigeria, and Russia combined.

We have access to these massive reserves thanks to recent improvements in horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing, a process in which gas is released by forcing water, sand, and chemicals into extremely deep wells. Environmentalists delight in damning hydraulic fracturing or “fracking,” because they fear the process will contaminate drinking water. It’s created such a stir that President Obama’s EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson took up the topic during a recent U.S. House Oversight Committee. But, instead of fulminating against fracking she said, “I’m not aware of any proven case where the fracking process itself has affected water, although there are investigations ongoing.” Turns out, as Reason’s science correspondent Ron Bailey notes, fracking gets blamed for problems that arise from poorly designed wells.

So fracking’s not the great evil it’s made out to be and accessing energy can be done with a much lighter touch than in years past. Thanks to technological advances, a job that used to require 20 wells can now be done with just one, which means all that the energy sitting beneath America’s western states could be accessed by touching only 0.07 percent of America’s public land.

Why the ‘Tweeter in Chief’ Shouldn’t Jab Technology

by Ted Balaker

(Video written and produced by Ted Balaker)

President Obama sure likes that Twitter. Over Father’s Day he became the first sitting president to issue his own tweet and this week he fielded questions during the first-ever White House Twitter town hall. In 2009, he hosted the first YouTube town hall, and Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign was famously adept at harnessing the power of social media to spread the “hopeandchange” message and generate campaign contributions. Our Tweeter in Chief may may enjoy using new technology, but when it comes to preaching what he practices the first new media president can sound like a crusty, old Luddite.

Recently, when asked about the sluggish state of the economy Obama suggested that technology is restraining job growth. “There are some structural issues with our economy where a lot of businesses have learned to become much more efficient with a lot fewer workers,” he said. “You see it when you go to a bank and you use an ATM, you don’t go to a bank teller, or you go to the airport and you’re using a kiosk instead of checking in at the gate.”

Yes it’s true that machines can do jobs that bank tellers or airline ticket agents used to do, just as it’s true that the Internet can do many other jobs humans used to do (Think travel agents welcomed Orbitz?). It’s all true, but we should still root for technology to make things more efficient because that process creates far more good stuff than bad.

Think about how much you value the Internet. How much would someone have to pay you to give up the Internet for the rest of your life? Would a million dollars be enough? Twenty million? How about a billion dollars?

The War on Lemonade Stands! Nanny of the Month (June 2011)

by Reason TV

This Fourth of July weekend think about what truly represents freedom: Old Glory, the Liberty Bell, and an ice-cold glass of lemonade.

This month’s lineup of busybodies includes two regulars: the FDA, which is slapping new, more graphic, possibly counterproductive, warning labels on cigarette packs and the goldfish grabbers on San Francisco’s Animal Control and Welfare Commission.

But top dishonors go to the sour bureaucrat who put the squeeze on a group of kids for running a lemonade stand. Sure they were raising money for a worthy cause (pediatric cancer research), but they were doing it without a permit, and that’s why they got slapped with a $500 fine.

Presenting Reason.tv’s Nanny of the Month for June 2011: Jennifer Hughes of Montgomery County, Maryland’s Department of Permitting Services!

North Carolina Bans Rare Burgers! Nanny of the Month (May 2011)

by Reason TV

May’s biggest busybodies are taking it to poker players and teen tanners, but the nation’s top nag has lovers of pink-in-the-middle burgers seeing red.

In a stunning blow to all that is juicy and delicious, the Tar Heel state actually prohibits restaurants from serving rare or medium-rare hamburgers. (And if this crime against meat freedom seems especially un-American, keep in mind that it comes from the same state that once banned Old Glory at public rallies.)

School Principal Bans Homemade Lunches! Nanny of the Month (April 2011)

by Reason TV

This month’s slate of busybodies includes the FDA whose agents embarked on a year-long sting operation to bust an Amish company for selling raw milk. And then there are the killjoys at New York’s Department of Health who were poised to crack down on “dangerous” activities like wiffle ball and freeze tag.

But this time around no one out-nannied the Chicago public school principal who banned students from eating homemade lunches.

Nanny of the Month (Feb 2011): Would-Be Brothel Banner Sen. Harry Reid!

by Reason TV

Last month’s Nanny tackled the “scourge” of distracted walking, and this month’s runners-up have their sights set on banning big-leaguers from dipping and toddlers from talking.

But top dishonors go to the nanny from Nevada who’s picking a fight with prostitutes.

Academy Awards Alert! Why You Might Be a Fashion Criminal

by Reason TV

Say you don’t have the dough to add the fashions you see at Sunday’s Academy Awards ceremony to your closet. If you buy knockoffs instead, are you shopping smart or stealing?

Today it’s perfectly legal to copy whatever you see on the red carpet and sell it yourself. To some, such as  Diane Von Furstenburg, this sounds a lot like theft. The former German princess is one of the world’s most successful fashion designers and she’s teaming up with Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) to push a bill that would give designers a three-year monopoly on new creations.

The whole point of intellectual property is to spur innovation, and that, according to supporters, is exactly why the fashion industry needs such a bill. Without tougher protections, they say designers will have less incentive to create new looks.

But is the fashion industry really hurting for innovation? And are top-tier designers like Von Furstenberg really getting ripped off by bargain hunters? And even if they were, who’s to say whose look is truly original?

Johanna Blakely of USC’s Norman Lear Center worries that the relentless push for more intellectual property protection could lead to a situation where big design houses lawyer up and sue young designers. Designer Galina Sobolov, head designer and owner of Single by Galina Sobolov, agrees.

“If this bill was in effect as we grew our company, we would have faced probably millions of lawsuits,” says Sobolov, whose designs have been worn by celebs such as Katy Perry and Rachel Hunter. “And we would have never actually had a company.”

Nanny of the Month (Jan 2011) Drug Testing 11-year-olds! Fining iPod Users!

by Reason TV

Last month Reason.tv recognized 2010’s Nanny of the Year, and now it’s onto a brand new year of nagging nannies.

This month’s slate features heartland regulators targeting drinking games and New Jersey educators drug testing 11-year-olds.

But top dishonors go to the New York pol who’s pushing a bill that would make it illegal to cross the street while iPodding, cell-phoning or being otherwise engaged with an electronic gadget.

Obama’s State of the Union: Still Unfocused on Jobs

by Reason TV

During Tuesday’s State of the Union address President Obama mentioned the word “jobs” 31 times, topping last year’s tally by two. Back then he promised to make jobs his “number-one focus in 2010″ and then promptly focused on passing ObamaCare, regulating Wall Street, slapping a moratorium on drilling for oil in the Gulf–he even made time to chat with the gals on The View (Prez doesn’t know who Snooki is!).

Although Obama did make some attempts to fight unemployment directly (especially for public-sector workers), today the unemployment rate stands at 9.4 percent, almost as high as it was one year ago.

iPhone and oBama: Two Expensive New Models (Reason.tv SOTU response!)

by Reason TV

President Obama spent last year’s State of the Union address celebrating spending programs past (hooray, stimulus!) and proposing new budget-busters. The shellacking Democrats took during the 2010 midterm elections was supposed to change all that, but at Tuesday night’s SOTU Obama reverted to his “throw-money-at-every-conceivable-problem” self.

Yes he included some proposals to cut spending, but those are as likely to vanish as the spending hikes are likely to swell.

Could the “new” Obama be even more expensive than last year’s model?

5 Rules for Coping with Tragedy

Tragedies like the mass shooting in Tuscon at a public event organized by Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) are horrifying enough on their own, but they also have a way of bringing out the worst in reporters and politicians.

In fact, knee-jerk reactions often leave us with misconceptions and bad policies that stick around long after the healing has begun.

And so Reason.tv presents: 5 Rules for Coping with Tragedy

Countdown to Disappointment: Don’t expect the new Congress to cut spending

by Reason TV

Is it too soon to declare the new Congress a failure?

Ever since their midterm triumph, the Republicans have talked tough about cutting spending. Here’s hoping they make good on those promises, but they spouted the same tough talk after their 1994 election triumph and look what happened.

Back then the GOP revolutionaries targeted more than 200 programs for complete and utter elimination. They scored some minor victories (adios helium fund!), but a decade into their “revolution” (and after they gained a Republican president) inflation-adjusted spending on the combined budgets of the 101 largest programs slated for elimination actually increased by 27 percent.  And since then total federal spending has continued to soar, so why should we take Republicans seriously this time?

The countdown to disappointment starts now.

Busybodies, Babes, and Bacon: Presenting Reason.tv’s Nanny of the Year!

by Reason TV

They touch our lives in so many ways, and now Reason.tv acknowledges those who tell us that if it looks good, tastes good, or feels good, it should be illegal.

Live (to tape) from the fourth floor of the Sepulveda Center in Los Angeles, California—it’s the 2010 Nanny of the Year Awards!

Over the past year, Reason.tv has recognized plenty of busybodies who relish minding other people’s business, but who deserves to succeed 2009’s winner (Meddlin’ Mike Bloomberg), and take home the 2010 Nanny?

Will it be the heartland mayor who sacked the Lingerie Football League? The Peach State pol who sued a man for growing vegetables in his own yard? A member of the food police?

Remember, it’s a dishonor just to be nominated. So get your awards season started off right, and tune in to the only black-tie ceremony that delivers busybodies, bikini babes, and bacon!
