In 1954, on the anniversary of the ending of World War I, President Dwight D. Eisenhower proclaimed November 11, Veteran’s Day, so that we would pay special tribute to our military heroes. As we take time this year to honor those who have served our country on 11/11/11, let us never forget that it’s easy to take liberty for granted, when you have never had it taken from you. Our veterans dedication and bravery ensure our nation remains the home of the free because they’re our home of the brave.

In composing my tribute to our military veterans and how we can help honor them, I had tears of pride for all our veterans and their families and for my own family history too. My Mom’s brothers, Ben and Pete Gonzales both served in the Army during World War II. Uncle Pete in Africa and Uncle Ben under General Patton in Germany. My Dad’s brothers, Bill and Bob Merkle also served. Uncle Billy with the Marines in Japan and Uncle Bobby with the Army in Korea. My father-in-law Ed Lancaster served in the Coast Guard. My brother-in-law Dave Lancaster flew Harrier Jets with the Marines over Iraq and my cousin John Merkle serves in the Army in Germany today.

And then there’s my Dad, Retired Master Sergeant Kenneth Merkle. Dad served 26 years in the United States Army as a Cryptologic Linguist, or 98G for the awesome military personnel reading this right now. He spent some of his Army career listening and translating what the Soviets were saying over the airwaves while we were stationed in West Berlin, Germany. Yes, they were called Soviets back then and he was my own James Bond, sans tuxedo and martini. Dad prefers single-malt Scotch.

Dad had a successful career in linguistics taking us throughout Germany to various military bases with our “home” base at the Presidio of Monterey in California. Upon retirement from the Army, he then began a second career as a civilian spanning another almost 20 years with the Department of Defense managing data systems until he retired a couple months ago. My dad is the most brilliant man I know and while quiet in nature, leads a life filled with big love, big joy and big laughter thanks in part to the support of my mom, Grace, who’s been by his side since his graduation from Basic Training.

Growing up the daughter of a career Army soldier, I had a most fortunate life. Granted as a child, I didn’t think I was fortunate. I disliked moving. Immensely. After all, as a kid, it was all about me and leaving friend after friend to move yet again was no fun. As every military family can relate, we moved a lot. In fact, until my sweet sixteen, we moved 9 times between military bases stateside and in Germany. Packing, unpacking, again and again while getting settled and having new teachers at new schools and making new friends. All of this with no cell phones, internet, reality TV or instant information. Things took time back then, we didn’t have much and I had no idea life was so damn good.

On this Veteran’s Day, as you thank our military for their service, thank their families too. You can help show your support and help our troops and their families this Veteran’s Day and every day by donating to any of the fantastic organizations below:

Always present for our troops is the USO, so check them out at USO.org on more ways to help our troops. There’s even a new U.S. Military Facebook page to bring “together resources and information to help the millions of military personnel, veterans and families stay connected and informed.” And of course, there’s an app for that! “A Nation Gives Thanks” app is available so we can thank active service members, veterans and their families for their service to our country too! Ch-ch-check them all out!

So, thank you, Dad. Thank you for joining the Army. Thank you for teaching me to honor faith, family and country. Thank you for taking me to countries with different cultures and religions and to see that life in the United States is truly the best in the world. And thank you for teaching me to work hard, appreciate the life I have and to give back in our community. Dad, it is your strength and honor, dedication and service, and your love that made me the woman I am today.

I am also grateful to the military for my life experiences and because of the internet, I’ve been able to reconnect with friends from my travels around the world. Despite my “civilian” status today, I am and will forever be an Army brat.

Happy Veteran’s Day and thank you to all who have served our great nation. Benjamin Franklin once said “Where liberty dwells, there is my country.” My country is better because of every veteran. Thank you and may God bless you, yours and America. Always.

Last week, the Veteran’s Administration agreed to settle the lawsuit regarding censorship of freedom of speech and freedom of religion at the Houston National Cemetery.

Photo by Michael Stravato of the New York Times

To recap, my previous article entitled God Bless Our Military … Just Not At The Houston National Cemetery, shared how the Houston National Cemetery Director, Ms. Arlene Ocasio, was requiring grieving families and volunteer groups to not use the words “God” or “Jesus” at any funeral ceremony without her prior approval.

The Department of Veterans Affairs also defended Ms. Arlene Ocasio stating the accusations in the lawsuit against the Department of Veterans Affairs and Ms. Arleen Ocasio were “categorically false.” Local elected officials complained and Congressman John Culberson, U.S. Representative of Texas District 7, took it upon himself to go undercover at a military hero’s funeral and found the truth. He personally witnessed the censorship of freedom of speech and freedom of religion at the funerals of our veterans. Read about his experience here.

Late last week, Houston Chronicle’s Lindsey Wise shared the following terms to the settlement that were agreed to by the mediating parties. These terms are currently awaiting Texas Supreme Court Chief Justice Tom Phillips’ sign off:

The VA will not interfere with prayers during burial services.

The VA will not edit or control the speeches of speakers at ceremonies or events at the cemetery containing religious messages or viewpoints and cannot ban religious words in verbal communications between the volunteers and veteran’s families.

The VA will not ban religious speech or words like “God” or “Jesus” in condolence cards or gifts.

Payment by the VA of the veterans groups’ $215,000 in legal fees.

The VA will have a Bible, Cross and Star of David placed on an open shelf within the Chapel, that will be easily accessible and available for use by families if they so choose.

The local members of VFW District 4 and Houston National Memorial Ladies would resign their positions as official VA volunteers. They will be free to provide their own texts of recitations to funeral homes so that veterans’ families can decide if they would like these groups to provide any services at the cemetery.

While many have asked for the resignation of Houston National Cemetery Directory Arleen Ocasio, the status of her position is not addressed in this agreement. Hmm.

Full details of the settlement can be found at the jump here. While the parties involved are not yet commenting on the settlement terms as the judge has yet to sign off on the agreement, I see this as a victory for freedom of speech and freedom of religion. I also believe it’s really sad a lawsuit had to be filed for rights highlighted in our Constitution. This is yet another sign of the sad times we’re in, but our faith will remain strong.

Listen. As I’ve said previously, if you choose not to pray, that’s your choice. I respect all faiths and beliefs so I won’t force mine on you and you don’t force yours on me. Americans should be able to pray as they wish, when they wish, and if they wish, without the permission or supervision of any government entity or any person for that matter. And should those grieving families wish to have the VFW Honor Guard, the Houston National Memorial Ladies or any other volunteers there to help in their greatest time of need for support, they should be able to do so too.

Please continue to help our military and their families by supporting one or more of the following wonderful organizations:

Operation Home Front

Veteran’s of Foreign Wars

Wounded Warrior Project

And Troop Support – Links to multiple websites on how to help!

Thanks to the Liberty Institute for helping these groups. And many thanks to all of you who have called, emailed and voiced your support for the veterans. Without them, we wouldn’t be the greatest nation on the planet. God Bless America and may God continue to bless our military!

Confirmation that the Director of the Houston National Cemetery is censoring freedom of speech and freedom of religion at the funerals of our veterans.

As you may remember, my previous article entitled God Bless Our Military … Just Not At The Houston National Cemetery, shared how the Houston National Cemetery Director, Ms. Arlene Ocasio, was requiring grieving families and volunteer groups to not use the words “God” or “Jesus” at any funeral ceremony without her prior approval. This has been a hot topic here in the Houston area, but Ms. Ocasio remains in her position as are her expressed requirements carried out by her employees to ensure prayers are more inclusive of other religions.

Earlier this week, the Department of Veterans Affairs defended Ms. Arlene Ocasio stating the accusations in the current lawsuit against the Department of Veterans Affairs and Ms. Arleen Ocasio were categorically false. Congressman John Culberson, U.S. Representative of Texas District 7, took it upon himself to go undercover at a recent military hero’s funeral and found the truth. He personally witnessed censorship of freedom of speech and freedom of religion at the funerals of our veterans.

Listen here as KTRH’s Matt Patrick talks to Congressman Culberson on this morning’s radio show. There is purposeful, deliberate and repeated interference occurring against the grieving families, the VFW Honor Guard and other volunteer organizations there in support of our military hero funerals.

As also reported by Nik Rajkovic at KTRH, Congressman Culberson is so upset with the Director’s actions that he’s threatening to “zero out” her salary unless she quits or moves elsewhere. Congressman Culberson is Chairman of the Appropriations Subcommittee for the Veterans Administration.

Yes, I understand and agree there should be and are SOP’s for funerals at National Cemetery’s as with any governmental entity or even private business; however, in this particular case, the actions of this Director are unacceptable as her requirement has crossed the line on many separate occasions, as now evidenced personally by a United States Congressman.

We must remember that the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution reads: ”Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” If the Houston National Cemetery and its Director are truly there to help and respect the military families, they will not continue to interfere with the Constitutional and dare I say, God given, rights to grieve and pray. Period. Unfortunately, this freedom is not allowed at the Houston National Cemetery, but I have faith and hope this will soon change.

Join me in thanking Congressman John Culberson for going out of his way to find out personally what is happening at the Houston National Cemetery. If only more elected officials were like him. I agree with him that Houston wants a new Director. Immediately.

Please also continue to help our military and their families by supporting one or more of the following wonderful organizations:

May God continue to bless our military and our great nation. If you choose not to pray, that’s your choice. I respect all faiths and beliefs so I won’t force mine on you and you don’t force yours on me. Grieving families, the VFW Honor Guard and any volunteers there to assist the families with their needs should pray as they wish, when they wish, if they wish, without permission from a government entity.

Yesterday, I had the honor of attending the Religious Freedom Rally at the Houston National Cemetery with my husband Steve. At this event, a coalition of Houston area pastors, representing a variety of ethnic and religious denominations, stood alongside several Texas politicians and local officials to support our veterans, their families, freedom of speech and freedom of religion.

Tears began swelling in my eyes early as we drove off the Sam Houston toll road onto the feeder road to a complete stop well before the signal light to turn onto Veteran’s Memorial Boulevard. I felt great pride in knowing so many of my fellow Texans felt as we did and were able to attend this event. We arrived with plenty of time, but with the turn out of what I’d say was close to 1,000 people, we ended up having to park at the far end of the cemetery and were a teeny bit late to hearing the first couple speakers. But the hundred-degree heat was going to stop us. We all heard the call and we came. As we walked up to the event, I heard “pardon the noise, but this is the sound of freedom.” Cheers roared throughout the crowd. How sweet it is.

Make a note Texans: All politicians representing the Houston area were invited to this event. Some attended, many did not. I’d like to thank those who I heard speak: Dave Welch, Executive Director, US Pastor Council, Paul Bettencourt, Pastor Willie Davis, Congressman Pete Olson, State Representative Debbie Riddle, Pastor Scot Wall, Gold Star Mom Debora Wallace, my State Representative Allen Fletcher, Jay Guerrero speaking on behalf of Senator John Cornyn, Harris County Clerk Stan Stanart, Pastor Steve Riggle and Congressman Ted Poe. I will remember these names.

To recap, the Houston National Cemetery Director, Arleen Ocasio, requires grieving families to not use the words “God” or “Jesus” at any personal funeral ceremony without her written approval. I wrote about this censorship and travesty in a post last week. Ms. Ocasio has stated that she was only trying to make prayers more inclusive of other religions. Hmm. If she truly is trying to make prayers more inclusive of other religions, why has she:

… instructed Veterans of Foreign Wars District 4 to remove prayers from its burial rituals and to no longer utter remarks when handing the discharged shell cases from the rifle salute to the family of deceased veterans?

… instructed American Legion Post 586 to remove prayers from its burial rituals?

… told the National Memorial Ladies that they could no longer include “God Bless” in their condolence cards or speak religious messages to veterans’ families?

… shut down the Cemetery chapel and use it now for only a storage and meeting facility?

Ms. Ocasio is not being inclusive of other religions, she is against freedom of religion and against freedom of speech. Her tyranny in treating our veterans and their families as “customers” must no longer be tolerated. Read more about the current lawsuit against the Department of Veterans Affairs and Ms. Arleen Ocasio here.

All who spoke were emotional as were those watching and listening. I know I was not alone in my tears. We must all speak for those who cannot speak for themselves. That means you too. We must stand together and do all we can to help ensure our freedoms remain as they have for the past 235 years. Write your Congressman. Call them. Same goes for our local officials. Let your voice be heard. The days of “it’s none of my business” must end or our country will no longer be the land of the free and the home of the brave.

In all the emotion, I saw some great t-shirts and handmade signs that made me smile:

“Enjoy Freedom of Speech? Thank a Vet!”

God Bless Our Troops and their Families

1st Amendment: Freedom OF religion, not freedom from religion!

One Nation Under God.

My Marine Has Your Back.

We sang along to The Nash Family and their Diamond Rio hit “In God We Still Trust.”

We praised John Cornyn’s words that our Founding Fathers rightly placed language in our Constitution that “precludes the federal government from establishing an official religion, but this same language also prohibits the government from limiting an individual their rights to the free exercise of religion according to his or her conscience.” Exactly.

We sang “God Bless America” together. This song always gives me goosebumps, tears to my eyes and a lump in my throat.

Our veterans and their families give the ultimate sacrifice so we can enjoy the freedoms we do today. They deserve better treatment than what they’ve received the past many months here at the Houston National Cemetery. The censorship of speech and religious freedom must end now. If this can happen in Texas, it can happen anywhere across our great nation. Not. On. Our. Watch!

Houston wants a new Director. Immediately. We demand it. Political correctness is out of hand in our country. Today is Independence Day and here in Houston, Texas, just as what began 235 years ago, we stand with our veterans, their families and friends in declaring our freedom from tyranny again. Join us by contacting your Congressman, the Veteran’s Administration in Washington, DC (#202-373-5400) and demand a new Director for the Houston National Cemetery.

Dressed as ‘zombie soldiers’ killed in combat, ‘ghosts of war victims,’ witches and healthcare fairies, members of Code Pink menacingly paraded in front of a captive audience of children one block from the White House, who waited along the sidewalk in front of Decatur House just off Lafayette Park for a Halloween party hosted by President Obama.

Last Saturday, the President hosted several hundred military families for trick or treating. Also invited were children of White House staff and about 2000 children from eleven D.C. area elementary schools.

In a press release published at their website, key Obama ally Code Pink – a group co-founded by one of Obama’s top funders Jodie Evans, announced they were targeting military families for what can only be called psychological abuse by conducting a macabre protest of the war in Afghanistan as the families waited in line to enter the White House grounds.

This is not the first time Code Pink has waged psychological warfare on our troops and military families. Four years ago the group initiated a weekly protest at the main entrance to Walter Reed Army Medical Center where Code Pink held signs reading, “Maimed for a lie” and “Enlist here and die for Halliburton.” One Veterans Day, Code Pink protesters called the wounded warriors at Walter Reed war criminals and on other occasions have called them terrorists.

Video of the Halloween protest shows members of Code Pink, including co-founder Medea Benjamin and Condoleezza Rice stalker Desiree Fairooz emotionally waterboarding the children in front of their parents.

Benjamin, whose work prolonging the insurgency in Iraq with humanitarian aid and political support for the terrorists is believed by many military families to have led to the maiming and killing of thousands of American soldiers in Iraq, has now focused her energies on helping our terrorist enemies defeat America in Afghanistan by propagandizing against reinforcements for our troops.

Dressed in fatigues with a bloody bandage wrapped around her head, Benjamin loudly moaned as she emoted being a ‘zombie soldier’, while holding a black cut-out of a rifle and wearing a pink sign that read, “The White House is haunted by the ghosts of Bush’s war.”

That’s just what children of soldiers fighting for our freedom should see, yes? Well, if your intent is to wage psychological warfare on the families of our troops to aid our terrorist enemies then the answer would indeed be, “yes.”

Fairooz, convincingly portraying a witch (as the Buck Owens song says, all she had to do was ‘act naturally’), called out to the children, telling them she wanted “young blood” for the war. (1:25 mark in video.)

Reuters was so disgusted by the display, the newswire’s photo caption accused Code Pink of taunting the children:

Members of the protest group Code Pink taunt local school children with chants about the war in Afghanistan as the children and their families arrive for a Halloween reception by U.S. President Barack Obama and his family at the White House in Washington, October 31, 2009. REUTERS/Jonathan Ernst (UNITED STATES CONFLICT POLITICS SOCIETY)

Two days later, Reuters posted a blog entry responding to criticism of the caption by a Code Pink supporter:

“Nobody is paying us to ‘run such captions.’ Our photographer says the protesters said things to challenge and confront the children and their parents. For example, one protester dressed as a Wicked Witch was saying things like, ‘More pretties to die in my war! More pretties!’

“He said they were not just protesting the war in general but were, in effect, telling these families that their children were going to die at war. That sounds pretty much like taunting to me: GBU Editor”

In the press release issued last Friday about their Halloween protest at the White House, Code Pink explicitly stated they were targeting military families:

“While the Obamas host a Halloween Party outside the White House for military families, peace activists will also don costumes and call on Obama to oppose the surge in Afghanistan and end the wars… The activists will be dressed as zombie soldiers, ghosts of war victims, a monstrous Obama’s Afghanistein and more.”

The video of the protest shows the shocked and bewildered looks on the faces of the children in reaction to the real-life ghouls from Code Pink.

One wonders what will it take for President Obama to renounce the support of Code Pink and Jodie Evans. A commander-in-chief who truly cared about the troops and their families wouldn’t have to be told to do the right thing. It would come naturally.
