With the Occupy movement becoming increasingly confrontational nationwide, there are indications that the anti-capitalist movement is turning violent deliberately. The adroit agitators intermixed among the idealistic but misguided young people, the street radicals bent above all on attacking the U.S. economic system, see violent revolution as a key route to the transformation of our country into their version of the socialist utopia.

A look at the organizers of the most recent pre-planned Day of Action spotlights a large, radical group, a latter-day Red Army of seasoned activists who have been discreetly guiding Occupy since the movement’s onset and whose history is colored with previous mayhem while their plans for the immediate future raise serious questions. Just yesterday, the Occupy movement posted online plans for “alternative forms of protest,” including flash mobs that can be deployed nationwide.

Just over a week ago, Occupy Wall Street held a three-day “Direct Action Preparation and Training” course in downtown Manhattan to gear up for the latest round of riots, including last Thursday’s three-course meal of in-your-face tactics aiming to block subways and bridges as well as shut down the stock market.

Revealingly, official resources provided on the Occupy site as part of the planning for last week’s chaos shows several manuals from the Ruckus Society, whose mission is to provide “environmental, human rights, and social justice organizers with the tools, training, and support needed to achieve their goals”; this includes training radical activists in direct action techniques.

The same Ruckus Society that helped to spark the 1999 World Trade Organization protests in Seattle, which devolved into violent unrest, was listed as a “friend and partner” for last week’s Day of Action.

The Ruckus training manuals provided at the Occupy site leave little to the imagination. Titles include: “Blockading for Beginners,” “Anonymous Riot Guide,” “Define White Supremacy,” “Uncle Sam the Pusher Man” and, of course, the (still!) Communist Party-connected National Lawyers Guild’s “Legal Observer Manual.”

Is the ”50 Crucial Points for Nonviolent Struggle” manual offered tongue in cheek? A closer look at Ruckus reveals an even larger brigade of extremists who are now deeply tied to Occupy:

Ruckus is funded by the Tides Center, a massive money hole foundation that channels fiscal sponsorship to a who’s who of conspicuously far-left groups.

Another beneficiary of Tides is Adbusters magazine, which is reported to have come up with the Occupy idea after so-called Arab Spring protests toppled governments in Egypt, Libya and Tunisia. The Adbusters website currently serves as a central hub for Occupy’s nationwide planning.

The Tides-funded MoveOn.org has coordinated with Occupy and has used the movement’s activism to springboard its own initiative to take on capitalism with a Make Wall Street Pay campaign.

A major Tides donor is the billionaire financier George Soros.

President Obama himself once helped to fund the Tides Center. From 1999 to 2002, Obama sat alongside the aggressively unrepentant Pentagon-bomber Bill Ayers as a paid director on the board of the Woods Fund, a Chicago nonprofit that channeled money to a number of ”progressive” groups, including the Tides Center. Last month, Ayers gave a teach-in to Occupy Chicago entitled, “Non-violent direct action,” in which he implied the movement should take a revolutionary turn while laughing at the idea of Occupy protesters’ behaving lawfully.

Last week’s stepped-up tactics were not meant to serve as the movement’s grand finale. Indeed, Occupy shows no signs of relenting any time soon. A forum on the Occupy Wall Street website is called for protesters to “occupy” the malls on Black Friday while plans are afoot to shut down all West Coast ports.

Citing the success of the recent so-called Day of Action protests, Take to the Square, one of Occupy’s main online planning forums, has devised an “Alternative Day of Action” to coincide with international Human Rights Day on Dec. 10. The Occupy forum calls for “alternative forms of protest” and “new forms of action with a creative spirit” including “public forums, workshops and flash mobs.”

A flash mob refers to a group of people who assemble suddenly in a public place to perform a collective act and then disperse. While flash mobs have been organized in the past for entertainment purposes, such as for satire or live television shows, recently the concept has also been used for criminal intent.

Flash mobs of mostly teenagers have reportedly attacked random targets in Philadelphia, Maryland, Cleveland, Chicago and Washington, D.C. Philadelphia’s recently reelected mayor, Michael Nutter, imposed strict curfews in response to the incidents.

While the exact nature of any future Occupy flash mob was not immediately clear, already one Occupy site – Occupy Oakland – did host a dancing flash mob this past weekend in conjunction with Dancing Without Borders, an Oakland nonprofit, and the radical antiwar outfit, Code Pink.

The deployment of Occupy flash mobs could provide the anti-Wall Street movement with a tactical advantage. Occupy mobs appearing at sites without warning could damper the planning of countermeasures by cities, citizens and law enforcement.

It’s helpful here to draw a distinction between optimistic, generous, youth-energized movements demanding an end to corruption while wrongly working outside the framework of the law – with Occupy - and another, less-visible crew: the intellectual grandchildren of the Soviet ideologues of the mid-Twentieth Century. It’s hard to believe that, two decades after the Soviet Union blew up and expired, there still exist bands of self-described deep thinkers who want one more chance to prove that Marx, Engels, Feuerbach, Lenin, Papa Stalin and that charmer Mao were on the right track to solving the biggest human dilemma: how can we all get along with each other in a cosmopolitan society?

History proves, to borrow one of their phrases, that heirs to Eurasian Marxism are not fussy about means to ends. Stalin killed 20 million of his own citizens; Mao actually killed at least 70 million Chinese people, both Han and “Little Nationalities.” These are unthinkable numbers, mainstays of that last century we managed to escape in hope that this one would turn out better. Normal citizens are astounded to see gray-haired vestiges of that tradition hand in hand these days with teenagers and college students, kids who clearly have no idea what a mess the Marxists made of practical life – and how bitterly corrupt the Party leaders inevitably became.

It’s an eye-opener, therefore, to learn that Obama and Ayers also channeled Woods Fund money to a major Saul Alinsky-based training outfit, the Midwest Academy, whose founder, Heather Booth, has recently been advising unions on how to utilize the economic crisis.

An arm of Midwest, Citizens Action of Wisconsin, was one of the main orchetsraters of last February’s protests against Gov. Scott Walker. Those protests seemed to be the domestic litmus test for Ocuppy. If Occupy can simmer along for a few months, and all signs indicate that it can, the most ambitious escalation seems set to coincide with major NATO and G-8 summits in Chicago next May, when world leaders convene to focus on global economic issues. A gilt-edged list of radical groups, including those behind the 1999 WTO riots, have already petitioned the city for permits to demonstrate. It’s the perfect storm for Occupy chaos, for nudging closer to the ultimate goal of “fundamentally transforming” – read: overthrowing – the American system.

The United Steelworkers (USW) Marxist president Leo Gerard believes if Big Labor can’t get what it wants through the ballot box it’s time to start cracking skulls.

The Canadian-born Gerard loves a brawl. In 1999 he helped the violent anarchists protesting in Seattle block access to the World Trade Organization meetings. USW sent 1,400 goons to shut the talks down. Gerard’s agitation helped to push Algoma Steel of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, into bankruptcy in the 1990s.

As the USW president since 2001, Gerard wholeheartedly supports the labor-backed Occupy Wall Street movement and wants it to become even more violent.

“You’re damn right Wall Street occupiers speak for us,” he recently told left-wing radio host Ed Schultz. “They do in Pittsburgh, they do in Chicago, they do in Oakland, they do in San Francisco, they do all across the country. And I think what we need is, we need more militancy.”

But occupying cities isn’t enough in the view of this man who began his career in labor activism at age 11 by handing out leaflets before a strike.

Gerard explained that the left needs to start a “resistance” movement. “If Wall Street occupation doesn’t get the message, I think we’ve got to start blocking bridges and doing that kind of stuff,” he said.

“And no wonder people are occupying. We ought to be doing more than occupying parks. We ought to start occupying bridges. We ought to start occupying the banks, places themselves.”

Gerard is a member of the AFL-CIO’s executive committee and chairman of its public policy committee.

He takes pride in the fact that the New York Times called him the “No. 1 scourge of free traders.” No wonder: A few days after Gerard visited President George W. Bush’s cabinet in 2001 the Bush administration slapped tariffs on imported steel. To help advance the protectionist agenda, President Obama named Gerard to the President’s Advisory Committee on Trade Policy and Negotiations.

Like Karl Marx, Gerard has an interest in economics. He had planned to become an economics professor before taking a job in the labor movement. But interest doesn’t imply aptitude, and like Marx, he apparently has little understanding of economics.

In an economically illiterate screed, Gerard proclaimed that America, with its $15 trillion in national debt and untold trillions of dollars in unfunded liabilities, doesn’t “have a deficit crisis; we have a jobs crisis.”

He complained that the economic policies of the Obama administration aren’t statist enough. “In my own naiveté I was dumb enough to assume that a Democratic Congress and a Democrat in the White House would put us on a different path,” he said, arguing that massive government spending on the twin fantasies of clean energy and green technology would magically reduce unemployment.

If Obama won’t move forward with big new spending plans then it’s time to bring out the baseball bats, Gerard said. “We better face up to the fact that we have to hit the streets, kick some ass, and mobilize to do something about it,” he said.

I’m sick and tired of us whining about what the Democrats didn’t do. The tougher question is what are we doing, and do we have what it takes. Don’t worry about attacking Obama; attack the money! It’s Wall Street and the banks blocking a recovery and shipping our manufacturing abroad.

To Gerard, it is not radical leftist agitation that leads to violence but capitalism itself. Economic “inequality,” he says, “leads to instability and violence.”

And unions are on a holy mission to combat the evils of the market, he argues. “Unions are instruments of social and economic justice, and they’re instruments of democracy.”

Gerard has close ties to the neo-communist Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) and to Canada’s socialist party, the New Democratic Party (NDP).

In 2007 the Chicago branch of DSA bestowed the Eugene Debs Award on Gerard. The honor is named after the five-time presidential candidate and labor organizer who founded the Socialist Party of America.

Other radical labor leaders and community organizers to receive the award are AFSCME Council 31 political director John D. Cameron (2011), SEIU executive vice president Eliseo Medina (2004), AFL-CIO president Richard Trumka (1994), Midwest Academy founder Heather Booth (1987), and United Farm Workers of America co-founder Dolores Huerta (1976).

It’s just a matter of time before President Obama gives Gerard the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Convicted fraudster Robert Creamer, husband of Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), has announced that he is opening a nationwide political consulting firm, Democracy Partners.

Democracy Partners already “has offices in eight cities including Washington, D.C., Chicago, Minneapolis, Las Vegas, Miami, San Francisco, San Diego, and Portland, Maine”–and, presumably, a budget running into many millions of dollars.

Schakowsky & Creamer at the White House, November 2009

Creamer is not alone. His “partners” include Heather Booth, who founded the Midwest Academy, which Stanley Kurtz describes as “the hidden key to Barack Obama’s political career.”

Heather Booth (Chicago Weekly)

Booth also founded Citizen Action, the left-wing organizing body that included Creamer’s Illinois Public Action Council (IPAC), which gave Rahm Emanuel and other Chicago “progressives” their start in politics before collapsing in the 1990s as a result of Creamer’s financial mismanagement and fraud.

The client list at Democracy Partners includes many of Creamer’s clients at his DC-based firm, Strategic Consulting Group. One of those clients is his wife, who recently called for BigGovernment.com to be banned and labeled Andrew Breitbart a “sleazebag.”

Creamer apparently produced misleading direct-mail ads for Schakowsky and other Illinois Democrats which were designed to scare seniors during the 2010 campaign. Creamer also trained volunteers at “Camp Obama” and headed the DNC’s field-based “rapid response” operations during the 2008 election.

Old friends? Michelle Obama and Robert Creamer, 2009

Creamer proudly claims to have been “one of the major architects of the successful 2005 campaign to defeat the Bush plan to privatize of Social Security.” He also created the Democrats’ political blueprint for pushing health care reform, drafting the key elements of the plan while he was serving time in federal prison. Today he is leading the “Mediscare” campaign against Republican budget proposals and Medicare reforms.

Why would private investors hand millions of dollars to a man who had only served federal time for financial felonies? They wouldn’t–but Creamer’s political patrons would.

The purpose of Democracy Partners is to provide field operations and propaganda for Obama and the Democrats in 2012–outside the DNC and below the radar.

Creamer’s new scheme is proof that Obama has never really left his radical Chicago past behind.

(continued from Part 2)

It should come as no surprise that on the campaign trail, President Obama refused to be interviewed about Saul Alinsky, the community organizing guru who wrote Rules for Radicals, a how-to guide for destroying American capitalism and democracy.

Presumably Obama, who taught courses on Alinsky’s brutal, sometimes violent organizing techniques, declined to speak to reporters about the late guru. He must have realized that such an interview would throw an unwanted spotlight on Alinsky’s radicalism, and by extension, his own. Such counterproductive publicity would also have undermined the candidate’s efforts to reinvent himself as a moderate. Alinsky’s adherents now dominate the modern Democratic Party establishment. Apart from President Obama himself, they include Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, White House senior advisor Valerie Jarrett, Federal Communications Commission diversity chief Mark Lloyd, Obama’s ex-green jobs czar Van Jones, former DNC trainer Heather Booth, Children’s Defense Fund founder Marian Wright Edelman, former HUD Secretary Henry Cisneros, and Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa to name just a few. “Who the hell isn’t [an Alinskyite] in this administration?” asks conservative author David Horowitz.

And President Obama hasn’t been the only longtime ACORN operative working in the White House. There’s also the low-profile Patrick Gaspard who, until recently, was White House political affairs director, one of the titles Karl Rove held in President Bush’s White House.

In a move that ought to disturb anyone who cares about the integrity of the democratic process, earlier this year Gaspard took over the reins of the Democratic National Committee as its executive director—just in time to begin initial preparations for President Obama’s 2012 reelection campaign.

Gaspard hails from the same world of radical left-wing community organizing that made Barack Obama who he is today. Gaspard is an expert in the harsh, street-smart organizing tactics taught by Alinsky. He’s the hatchet man Obama sent to New York over a year ago to strong-arm then-Gov. David Paterson into dropping his reelection campaign. As executive director running the DNC’s day-to-day operations, Gaspard will oversee Organizing for America, a project of the DNC supposedly modeled on Alinskyite organizing principles.

Former Obama White House political director Patrick Gaspard is now ACORN's man at the DNC

Born in the Democratic Republic of Congo to Haitian parents, not much is known about this Rasputin-like power behind the throne. Gaspard studiously avoids publicity and is reluctant to talk to journalists. Look him up on Nexis and you will find virtually nothing about this influential radical leader. But his colleagues hold him in high esteem. “Patrick is the best political mind of his generation in New York and maybe the nation,” according to Kevin Sheekey, a lieutenant of New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg. “I wouldn’t dispute that,” added David Axelrod, at the time a senior advisor in the Obama White House.

Gaspard came to the White House from ACORN’s favorite labor organization, Service Employees International Union. (SEIU Locals 100 and 880 were, until recently, official affiliates of ACORN.) He had been executive vice president for political and legislative affairs for SEIU Local 1199 United Healthcare Workers East, which claims to be the largest union local on the planet, “representing more than 300,000 members and retirees in New York, Maryland, the District of Columbia and Massachusetts.”

Evidence suggests that before he joined the Obama administration, Gaspard was ACORN chief organizer Bertha Lewis’ political director in New York. How do we actually know Gaspard, who goes to extraordinary lengths to shun the public spotlight and scarcely appears in Nexis searches, was Lewis’ right hand man?

Because Gaspard’s employment with ACORN was acknowledged by no less an authority than ACORN founder Wade Rathke himself.

Rathke wrote May 16, 2009, at his blog: “Tell me that 1199’s former political director, Patrick Gaspard (who was ACORN New York’s political director before that) didn’t reach out from the White House and help make that happen, and I’ll tell you to take some remedial classes in ‘politics 101.’”

ACORN founder Wade Rathke

The “before that” time period Rathke is referring to is 2003, when Gaspard was executive vice president for political and legislative affairs for Service Employees International Union Local 1199 (United Healthcare Workers East). It’s also worth noting that of all the entries in Bertha Lewis’ rolodex, a copy of which this writer gained possession of in 2009, the entry for Gaspard is the most extensive.

Gaspard’s ties to ACORN, SEIU, and Lewis go back at least to 1989, when he volunteered for the David Dinkins mayoral campaign in New York City. In 2003, he became acting field director for Howard Dean’s presidential bid. He was national field director in 2004 for America Coming Together, a now-defunct get-out-the-vote operation that received a $775,000 fine for campaign finance abuses. In 2006, Gaspard was acting political director for SEIU International. In 2008, Gaspard worked as national political director for the Obama campaign followed by a stint as associate personnel director for the Obama-Biden transition team.

As the old Washington saying goes, politics is personnel. Who knows how many administration offi cials were put in place by Gaspard with direct input from ACORN’s Bertha Lewis? It boggles the mind. Gaspard also worked for New York’s Working Families Party, an appendage of ACORN. Lewis is a co-founder of that party —which endorsed Obama in 2008— and has close ties to Rep. Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., who pointedly refused to have the House Judiciary subcommittee he chaired in the previous Congress investigate ACORN.

As news of Gaspard’s involvement with ACORN spread, Rathke changed his blog entry. Where he had written that Gaspard worked for New York ACORN, he inserted two new sentences: “This line used to contain a reference to Patrick Gaspard working for NY ACORN. This is untrue, he never worked for ACORN.”

But Rathke wasn’t able to shove all evidence tying Gaspard to ACORN down the memory hole. If Gaspard isn’t tied to ACORN, why did he sign a letter to the editor of the Nation magazine (dated July 2, 2001) on behalf of the Working Families Party of New York? (Lewis signed the letter on behalf of ACORN and the Working Families Party.)

The party is part of ACORN, according to ACORN’s website, which in 2009 confirmed that in 1998, “ACORN members spearhead[ed] formation of the Working Families Party, the first community-labor party with official ballot status in New York state in more than 50 years.”

Internal ACORN documents obtained by this writer show Gaspard gave ACORN $40,000 before he joined the Obama administration. While Gaspard worked as an executive vice president of SEIU Local 1199, he gave ACORN $15,000 in 2007 and $25,000 in 2008. That’s an awfully large tithe for someone who made $111,894 in 2007 and who has a wife and two children. The $111,894 figure comes from an SEIU 1199 tax return. (If salary and deferred benefits are combined, the total is $151,869.)

Given Gaspard’s longstanding links to ACORN, it’s not at all surprising that Scott Levenson, a lobbyist and spokesman for ACORN, dropped by the White House to visit with his former co-worker. The purpose of the meeting was not disclosed. Another New Yorker in the Obama administration, Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Shaun Donovan, has close ties to ACORN. Before taking office, Donovan was New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s housing development commissioner. He worked closely with ACORN for five years on several projects.

ACORN's man at HUD, Shaun Donovan

“Perhaps no administration official has had more interaction with ACORN than” Donovan, according to the New York Times. Reinforcing the newspaper’s point, ACORN chief organizer Bertha Lewis praised the HUD secretary. “We grew to respect him, and he grew to respect us,” she said. Roll Call, a Washington, D.C., newspaper that covers Capitol Hill, reported Lewis admitted “ACORN has friends in high places for the first time in a long time.” Lewis acknowledged “that she has particularly good relationships with Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan and with Patrick Gaspard, the White House political director.”

This writer filed a Freedom of Information Act request with HUD last year seeking all correspondence between Secretary Donovan and ACORN. Instead of the maximum 45 days allowed, HUD responded eight months later. The letter said no such records of correspondence between ACORN and Donovan exist.

That’s hard to believe.

The left-wing militants of SEIU and the National People’s Action group plan to shut down K Street, the heart of the lobbying industry in the nation’s capital, at a massive in-your-face rally and march planned for Monday.

The goal of the “action” –in organizing parlance— is a show of force calculated to intimidate bank lobbyists and show support for sweeping anti-bank legislation pending in Congress.

The action, called The Showdown on K Street, is listed at the website of Jobs With Justice. JwJ works closely with ACORN, other community organizing groups, and the labor movement.

“This is the first time that they’re going to hit K Street all out,” said a source in the progressive movement. “They want to intimidate bank lobbyists, who aren’t used to this kind of confrontation.”

“It’s an anti-Wall Street march. In many ways it mirrors what happened on Wall Street about a month ago.”

The source was referring to another in-your-face anti-bank march on April 30 in New York City’s financial district led by National People’s Action (NPA). Also known as National People’s Campaign, the Chicago-based organization filed its first tax return in 2008.

As Andrew Marcus reported, the federal government cut off funding for NPA’s sister organization, the National Training and Information Center (NTIC) in 2003. Investigators found NTIC had misused millions of taxpayer dollars by spending them on training community organizers to lobby the government instead of on community development projects. NTIC also committed fraud by carrying out a cover-up.

NPA’s executive director is George Goehl who says he supports efforts to create “a more fair and just economy.” NPA takes credit for enacting the disastrous Community Reinvestment Act in the 1970s.

Marxist front group Americans for Financial Reform is also participating in the action. It is headed by executive director Heather Booth, an old hand at leftist astro-turfing operations. Booth is an Alinskyite who founded the Midwest Academy, a training institute for radical community organizers. “Alinsky is to community organizing as Freud is to psychoanalysis,” she has been quoted saying.

Booth has also been described as a “guiding force” for ACORN and was an avowed supporter of Bill Ayers’s Weather Underground terrorist group.

Other leftist groups participating are the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) and the AFL-CIO.

SEIU produced a tongue-in-cheek video in advance of the May 17 event. It’s called ”How to Stay Safe on K Street”:

As you know, we’ve been writing for some time about The Center for Community Self-Help and its financing affiliates Self-Help Credit Union, Self-Help Federal Credit Union, and Self-Help Ventures Fund. As of late, the organization has been under increased scrutiny for its questionable lobbying activities, its former leader and soon to be CFPA Czar Eric Stein, and its $15 million donation from disgraced hedge fund billionaire John Paulson.

According to the Self Help website, the organizations “provide financing, technical support, consumer financial services, and advocacy for those left out of the economic mainstream.” Within that complex web of entities under the Self-Help umbrella exists about forty or so real estate development projects. I thought it might be a productive exercise to start looking into some of Self-Help’s individual properties.

So, I started with Barr Building, LLC, a Self-Help investment registered under its affiliate Self Help Ventures Fund. The property is located at 910 17th Street NW, Washington, DC.

And wouldn’t you know, it happens to be home to one of our most frequent subjects:

The Service Employees International Union (SEIU).

This seemed especially curious, because it was only recently I’d discovered that SEIU, together with the AARP, is also the proud funder and agitator for one of the Center for Responsible Lending’s other advocacy projects – its state-specific lobbying websites targeted at regulating short-term loans in an effort to insulate its own predatory practices from any private industry competition. For example, take a look at this site, from Arizonans for Responsible Lending. It’s chock filled with all of the usual SEIU corporate campaign elements: the menacing title and domain name, the array of photos depicting abused consumers who simply could not have known any better, the manufactured headlines, and of course – the staple of their strategy – the studies and the research (all funded and conducted by their own organization allies).

And of course, the site is immersed in SEIU and ACORN through its flagship partners, such as “Americans for Financial Reform“, which is run by Heather Booth and Lisa Donner – longtime radicals of ACORN, SEIU, Center for Working Families and other leftist organizations.

How convenient. And there’s one of these sites for most of their ballot measure lobbying states. Even more convenient.

I suppose I’ll spend some time looking into the entire list of properties. Who knows what one will find? Where there’s smoke, there’s usually fire. Especially when SEIU enters the picture in the middle of someone else’s scandal.
