A Different Malik Shabazz and Jeremiah Wright? What Are the Odds?
by Larry O'ConnorAs a frequent contributor to Big Hollywood and Big Government, I was so proud to read Andrew Breitbart’s full-throated correction posted front and center at Big Government the other day. I was not proud that we had made an error that required correcting, but I was proud that we treated it up front and loudly for all the world to see. It is a stark contrast to corrections in the New York Times that are hidden somewhere between the crossword puzzle and the obituaries (which soon will include the Times, itself).
But, the more I thought about the story that prompted the correction (the fact that our headline stated that ACORN CEO Bertha Lewis visited the White House but it appeared that it was a different Bertha Lewis), the more I kept thinking to myself: “What are the odds?” You see, it isn’t just Bertha Lewis who has a name doppelganger out there. The White House also claimed that the Jeremiah Wright who visited there was a different Jeremiah Wright. And, even more credulity-defying, a different Malik Shabazz visited the White House this year as well.
I was discussing this on my internet radio show when I began to wonder what other names on that list could possibly be duplicates. For instance, me? If there is some other Malik Shabazz walking around out there and HE visited the White House, well surely there must be another Larry O’Connor who visited too. I went to WhiteHouse.gov and searched the on-line list of names. Nope, no Larry O’Connor. (By the way White House: it’s culturally insensitive for you to not use an apostrophe when spelling my last name. What have you got against Irish people, anyway?)
So, I opened up the search to my listeners. I asked them to search the data base at WhiteHouse.gov and see if someone else with their name visited the White House this year. Most of my listeners have pretty common names. But, they are not as common as Malik Shabazz, apparently. Gary Eaton, Jill Walter, Meredith Dake, Kellie Jane Adan, Adrian Guillory, and Michael Broderick… all names of my listeners and none of their names appear in the White House log, but Malik Shabazz and Jeremiah Wright’s names do. In fact, only one of the listeners to last night’s Stage Right Show had their name appear on the list. It seems that somewhere out there, another Yvonne Lee visited the White House, not the Yvonne Lee that listens to my show.
This just couldn’t be true. How could there be another Malik Shabazz who HAPPENNED to visit the White House and there not be a Jill Walter? I expanded the search to other names. What about our team here at the Big Blogs? John Nolte, Adam Baldwin, Mike Flynn, Gary Graham, Don Loos and Dana Loesch all are without imposters travelling the country with their name and visiting the White House. Oh and by the way, Andrew Breitbart’s name is not on the list either.
So, here we have a White House posting this data under the Orwellian title “Transparency Like You’ve Never Seen Before.” When names like Bertha Lewis or Malik Shabazz are questioned, the White House claims they are DIFFERENT people with the same names. And, “Big Journalism” buys the story without any further investigation. Whatever happened to getting a second source on something? What happened to “speaking truth to power”? And, most importantly, why am I, a regular American citizen, following up on this story and investigating the oddity of the White House claims instead of someone from a TV network or one of the hundreds of newspapers whose are supposed to be doing this for a living?
Allow me to answer that last question. I am doing this because I am highly skeptical of the White House’s explanation. It defies logic and reason and, I think that it belies the false myth that is the “Open Government” and “transparency” show that the Obama Administration is trying to propagate. The fact is, the people who run the networks and the newspapers in America do not have the same inherent skepticism for this White House or this President. They have supported him every step of the way and they accept an explanation like, “Oh that guy? That’s some OTHER Malik Shabazz.”
But, it’s not supposed to be that way. America’s Free Press is supposed to speak for all of the people, not just the ones that agree with them. Here’s hoping that BigJournalism.com is a place where questions are asked on behalf of those of us who don’t believe the answers we’re hearing.
Oh, and by the way… Eric Boehlert’s name is also not in the logs… what are the odds?

I have thought this all along. Why don't these people with the same name step forward? Does anyone know who they are? I don't buy the White House line on this at all. It should be looked into. It would be quite easy for them to produce the actual people who supposedly visited the White House.

So the odds it is him are low. This administration is rightly in hot water for breaking its promise to CSPAN to televise the reconciliation of health care. But this isn't necessarily the fault of the white house.
Also, even if the nastiest Malik Shabazz visited, it may have been a standard tour.
Interesting that the page to view the names isn't available anymore. I have one of the most common names around (I went to school with two other girls with my exact name, first and last, and have met several more over the years), so I'd be interested to see if my name is on it.

If I were a journalist I would be trying to prove where some of these people really were at the time of the visits. If Bertha Lewis was at a meeting with other people on the day she was supposed to be at the White House, then okay, maybe it was some other Bertha Lewis. But if I could never place her at any other event during times a Bertha Lewis had signed into the White House, then there would be reason to doubt her claim that she wasn't there.
NO ONE buys it. But the Obama WH has nothing but contempt for you and me and everyone else, and the media thinks it's sooooo awesome.
Imagine if I came back to work after just taking a day off without calling in. When pressed for an explanation, I offered that I was whisked away to the state capital for a consulting gig that had implications for national security. And that Obama could vouch for me. Your link to the visitor records gave a 404 error. I went to whitehouse.gov and clicked on "disclosures" and got a 404 error. I put "visitor records" in to the search, and got "the web page cannot be found."
You not only cannot access the records, you can't even SEARCH for the records.
I was a frequent visitor to whitehouse.gov during the eight years of President George W. Bush and not once in eight years did I get a 404 error.

I just did a whitepages.com search and it came up with 55 different ones from all over the US and it came up with 61 listings for Jeremiah Wright and over 100 for Bertha Lewis. What does this mean to you? May I burn in hell but I am going to say this anyway, it is possible that the White House was telling the truth. Now I have to go and wash my mouth out with soap. My guess is that whenever a truly contraversial name comes up the list they have decided that they are going to blame it on an evil twin who just happens to have the same name as the contraversial person. Indeed, what are the odds? It is a fair question and one that likely has an answer. I am no statistician, but something tells me that if statistics will be able to determine what the earth's temperature will be in 100 years, surely there are those who can tell us with reasonable certainty the odds that the "Bertha Lewis" showed up at the White House for a visit or that Malik Shabazz, Jeremiah Wright, and Bill Ayers were just unfortunate coincidences. My guess is that the "odds" will not be favorable to the current administration.

The real question, of the other Bertha Lewis, is how can she get a tour for 1061 people in the party from 10 am to midnight. that's either a long tour, or a party. Now searching for the social calendar doesn't list any party listed, but there is a DC event the week prior for the association of black colleges and universities. As far as the white pages search, Bertha Lewis is listed several times, including 3 in NY that are the 3 Jobs that she holds. ACORN(VP), Working Families Party(executive), and New Democracy Project(Executive Director). The majority of the remaining are household names, that I gather would be hard pressed to invite 1060 other people to go to DC and attend a function for 14 hours.

Larry, I hate to suggest this idea but I believe it has merit… Either the logs are inaccurate and folks are being coy and writing "Mickey Mouse" or, say Bertha Lewis when they visit the White House or this another Administration generated distraction. Given the tremendous immaturity of the White House gang, I would suspect the later. They probably sit in the Oval Office and giggle all day long how they punked all of us over a list of names. It stands to reason that if they entered the white house then they are on video/film somewhere. Then all you need to do is use the freedom of information act to request a copy of the video on the days in question. And like most places I am sure that they had to wear a visitors badge while they were there. Which ment they signed something and were most likely photographed or on video recieving said badge.
I tend to agree with you…this Administration is certainly known for slight of hand tactics, and with Rahm Emanuel in the game throwing curve balls, or is that dead fish? I think we get the picture of their maturity…and again I agree, the whole bunch is disgusting and an embarrassment to America!

Ok now search the database again but specify the visit start date 2009-07-25 , only about 11 people total on that day, only 9 took a tour, no other groups of 311, but the other groups are largish to one degree or another as well

Actually, it's only the claim that all three names belong to 'other individuals' that makes this so hard to swallow. That, and the growing general belief that this Administration has no credibility, and worse, simply doesn't care what we think. It isn't difficult to believe there are other individuals named "Bertha Lewis" and "Jeremiah Wright" besides the ACORN Lewis and the Liberation Theology Wright. Both surnames are quite common, and neither given name is exceptionally rare.

My own given name, "Merry" (derived from the surname of the person I was named for), was rare enough (back in the day) that I didn't meet or know of anyone with the same first name until I was in my 40's.
Then, in the 1990's, I was manning a library booth at a local Chamber of Commerce Expo event; next to my booth was an eye-doctor, born on a Christmas day, named "Merry," my daughter with the same name stopped to say hello, and a library board trustee and her granddaughter, named "Merry," were there. Four of us, within 10 or 15 feet of one another. Since then, I've found online 3 other people with my same first and last name.

The odds should be fairly high for a person that vists the White house to have at least Skype… Would be interesting to check a few more sources like this and see the likely number of "Bertha Lewis" clones out there. The governor and HHS secretary of Hawaii have told us that Obama has a birth certificate on file. We have seen 45 year old birth announcements. Nothing makes a birther as angry as evidence. Like I said… If these people visited, just admit it. But it will lead to another question… why did they visit? This will be a qualified question to ask based on who those people are and what their agendas are.
Lack of honesty in this administration is (I believe) at the core of the issue. Honesty about the true agenda of the health care plan, of keeping your word, etc… Transparency is also an issue because he made a big deal about it during his campaign… which we can easily see he was dishonest about.

I agree that John McCain's qualification to be president is also in question. Fortunately, he lost. Obama's question stems from his father being a British subject (Kenya Colony) at the time of his birth and citizenship (per current interpretation of the lw) is based on the father's citizenship. But, like I said I don't think it'll matter. If it's proven his father was a British subject, the court will just make a new interpretation of the law. Ultimately, this is not the biggest issue.

My issue with NObama is his actions and the results of those actions since taking office.
This is just my opinion, but I think that if the question was ever put before the courts they would rule that anyone born on American soil producing an American birth certificate meets the definition of Natural Born for the purpose of eligibility to be president…. regardless parental heritage. Also if someone in John McCain's situation were to come up again, the court would rule that any child born of a parent serving in the military abroad would be "natural born" for the purpose of constitutional eligibility to be president… even if an American soldier goes to say, Korea and marries a foreign national. That child should be eligible to be President.

I just used Lexis nationwide person locator and ran a search on Malik Shabbaz and got about 250 hits. I tried Bertha E. Lewis and got almost 500 hits. I think the probability is extremely low that each of these visitiors happened to be a person of equal clout to gain access to the WH and coincidentally sharing the same name. What is the probability of all doppelgangers showing up but not the usual suspects? Impossible.

The Constitution is strangely silent on the qualifications to be a "Natural Born Citizen". Historically anyone who is born on American soil, regardless of heritage is a United States citizen. And by definition they would be natural born. That could be an area of the Constitution that could be clarified. Both Obama and McCain caused eligibility questions to be raised because of the nationality of Obama's dad, and McCain being born on foreign soil. In my mind both are irrelevant, but the crazies are always looking for ways to gum up the works.
I even heard one blogger question the natural bornness of someone born of cesarean section.

What you say might be true about his father, I don't know. But his birth on United States soils makes the question of his father's citizenship status irrelevant. It is only if you claim that Obama was born outside of the U.S. is there a legal question about his citizenship status. Being born in the United States is the definition of natural born citizen. There are some caveats if his parents had been foreign diplomats, but his mother was an American citizen so there is still no question about his eligibility to serve once his birth in Hawaii has been established… and it has.

As for the word socialism and socialist, it is one of those emotional trigger words that have been hijacked and redefined by the right. I consider socialism to be public ownership of the means of production. Government safety nets and the like may come under the broader definition of socialistic, but they don't rise to the definition.
Our economy is based on capitalism. Well regulated capital markets are the greatest economic engine ever designed by man and rational actors on both sides don't want that to change. There are a few instances of government ownership of businesses, but usually it is taken on reluctantly in the fact of economic instability.
In my opinion, the word is used as a scary label. You redefine a word and associated it with a bad guy, and then paste it to your political opponents. Both sides do it, and it is one of the reasons it is so difficult to communicate because it distorts the language. Words take on different meanings to different people.

I went to http://www.whitepages.net and searched in all states for Malik Shabazz… there are 40 of them. So, while the odds are low, the odds aren't zero that another person by that name visited the WH. I think several of the commenters and Larry hit the nail on the head! What are the odds that several people with unusual names whose names happen to also be people of controversy all visited the WH within a short period of time and all of those people ARE NOT the same people in the public eye? That's when the entire explanation becomes suspect. If it was just one Malik Shabazz? But all 3 of those names all visiting the White House and all 3 are not the well known people with those names?! The moniker Malik Shabazz is most commonly a "muslim" name that is adopted by African-American individuals upon their conversion to the religion of islam. The most famous Malik Shabazz was more commonly known as Malcolm X. We of course know that this Malik Shabazz did not visit the Obama white house (he was assassinated in the 1960s). But because of his prominence a significant number of black men who convert to islam choose the same moniker.
