The Green Religion and ClimateGate: Interview With Steven Mosher

You probably haven’t heard of Mr. Mosher, but you should have. And that was the reason for our interview this morning. Andrew used his six hours of national radio time (yesterday and today) to highlight the top stories from the “Under Media”. ACORN, NEA, Van Jones, ClimateGate, stories that were virtually ignored by the major networks and pooh-poohed by the NY Times were, in fact, the stories that not only grabbed YOUR attention, but also drove legislation here at home as well as in Copenhagen.
Mr. Mosher was instrumental in promulgating the now infamous “hacked” emails from the Climate Research Unit at the University of East Anglia. These e-mails have called into question the methods, the calculations, the peer review process, even the overall SCIENCE involved in the Global Warming arguments that drove the Cap and Trade Legislation as well as the UN Climate Conference and Kyoto Protocols. Mr. Mosher obtained these emails on a CD from an unidentified colleague. After days of review, Mr. Mosher realized the importance of the information he was sitting on, and he began the process of posting the information on various “Climate Change” websites and blogs. Because the postings came from Mr. Mosher, the community immediately took them seriously. The rest is “Under Media” history.
At the end of the ten minute interview, in-studio guest Adam Baldwin asked Mr. Mosher the final question:

“I think one of the big, missing stories here is how the scientific publishing mechanism is corrupted. I mean, I think of “Global Warming” as kind of a religion, and what you see in the mails is how they construct the canon, of how they corrupt the journal publishing, to get the papers published what they WANT published, with the reviewers that they want reviewing it and the papers they don’t want published, they keep out.”
What is the last, remaining argument the Global Warming cultists have? “There are no peer reviewed studies!” In this one, succinct statement, Mr. Mosher connects the Climate-gate e-mails with a silver bullet to the heart of this argument. Why are there no peer reviewed studies? Because the “Peers” are silencing dissent through intimidation and bullying. It is the way the left has been trying to move their agenda forward for years.
Against ebryonic stem cell research? “You are anti-science!”

still though – i'm damn glad that more and more people are saying this! it's amazing to me how spot-on this is. the left's ideology is rooted in emotion, and when confronted with intellect, must resort to destruction of the opposition, as the ideas will not stand on their own volition.
The news here is that the story is being told succinctly to a national radio audience. I have raised this topic in casual conversation with my colleagues (most are conservative) at work. They all seem to have only a superficial understanding of the magnitude of this exposure. The AGW deception (or AGWH; hoax) has been completely undressed and few ordinary citizens have the inclination to pay attention long enough to understand the depth and extent of this deception. It is very good news that the message found a national audience beyond the FOX loyalists who already know the story. Now….if we could just clear the name of CO2…

I still think hitting on the first flaw of bad data is the easiest to understand. If you try and balance your check book with incorrect statements then the balance is going to be wrong no matter how badly you torture it with math or physics or secret modeling algorithms.
Start with the data, if the data set was bad and or cherry picked (and it is) then the opening statements are in doubt.
The follow on arguments of whether their models work or don't, or whether CO2 is causal or trailing, natural vs. man made forcing and mythical positive feedbacks etc. are all interesting but moot if the first part of the process is corrupt and it is.

Hopefully, the book will be done in a few days or so and people can read for the first time what happened between Nov 12th, the date of the last email and Nov 19th, the date when I pointed people at the russian server. When I first called these mails the CRUtape letters, it was not idle wordplay. There are probably some more articles that I'll write after the book is done. One perhaps on Piltdown Mann and the hockey stick as the shroud of turin.

I agree that the MSM is complicit and we can't control them or the debate, but fox could do it, I was pretty dissapointed with Stossels attempt, weak and kool-aide soaked.
Fox could get watts and others to do a multi part series, each examining one specific flaw, bad siting, collection methodologies, bad process, etc.
They could even do some "experiments" to show just how assinine some of the things that the CAGW use as the basis for their argument.
You tube is also a great way to go viral with some comedy animations backed up by hard links, but alas I cannot draw or animate.

What many people miss is that the climategate email scandal is not the real story. It was perpetrated as an attempt to shine a light on what many have been saying for years. The media has focused on the "hacked emails" story, while brushing aside the fact that thousands of scientist see man made GW as nonsense, and have credible scientific evidence to back up their claims. Unfortunately, too many Americans get their education by watching the 6:00 news.

A professor that frequents this site & I had similar discussion on here a couple of months ago. As humans, there is not much that can be done to significantly change the the CO2 levels, even if we stopped all production, electricity consumption, fires,etc. all over the world because humans only account for a small percentage of CO2, the mass majority is caused by oceans & volcanic activity. On top of that CO2 is not the main gas that causes the greenhouse effect, not even close, water vapor is, the percentage varies depending on temperature & out of that around 99% is natural & needed for life. There is also the effects of Trade Currents & Jet Streams. That is just a very small portion of what is to be considered & that the Greenies & Climavangolists don't address. They just see it simply, "Human bad. Hugging tree good" most of them don't even take into consideration that their ideas of "clean energy sources" often need equipment that make more pollutants to build than it would to just use a coal or natural gas power plant. & don't get me started on electric cars & the power requirements needed to charge their batteries.
a scitech news article yesterday talked of the Voyager spacecraft getting outside our solar system and finding an interstellar cloud that was magnetized. they also identified a magnetic bubble around our solar system called a heliosphere that is created by our sun. Voyagers show us that the interstellar clouds magnetism is compressing the heliosphere and theory is as it compresses it will affect terrestrial climates within the solar system.. this left me with two thoughts about the greenie fools;
. yeah right – man made global warming is an inarguable fact… when we have interstellar clouds out there having an effect.
. these greenies are convinced humans can control nature – they're sure to want to do something about this interstellar cloud affecting our terrestrial climate now.
Complaining about the media has been done. Nothing's going to happen there. The ONLY way to get rid of this movement is to make fun of it. Laughter is the best weapon.
You can't change the behavior of another. You can only change how you react to that behavior. Complaining isn't going to work. Violence would have too high a price. What we need to do is to make this movement a laughing stock. Turn the tactics of the left back on them.

Another trick the left uses is to frame the argument by assigning a foolish or pejorative label, no one wants to be associated with a "Denier" for instance.
I lose no sleep over using the same method to attack them or their ideas, if ridicule is good for the goose it's good for the gander, the differentiator is that we can use the truth, while they are forced to fall back on tactics.
i've lived among the evil lairs of the libs- Texas' equivilent of SanFran – Austin. They will not debate facts under any circumstances. It's been installed into their DNA to divert away from facts with any means possible. Emotions is the most common tool, and what drives their decision process. Facts are not important at all to them and are not in the least bit relevent or interesting. If you insist on discussing facts, they will get as dramatic as needed to end the debate.
I think humor is a good path to enlightenment- showing how they commited fraud while making fun of anyone that "Falls for it" sets up the right tone.
I still think Fox should pursue a more straight forward approach, a tandem assault would work wonders on the general populace.

It can't be that difficult to make a youtube presentation considering how many there are. I'm going to learn to do it. You can too. All the information you need is on the internet. You just have to find it. And when you do, remember: being serious and holding these folks to rules isn't going to work. You simply have to make fun of them in a true way. it reminds me of an 'discussion' I had with one of the greenies Indy. His passion strangely was on the efficiency of more dense populations, focusing on BTUs and power consumption. I don't remember the numbers in the research I found, but the BTUs it takes to make a cubic foot of concrete are kind of shocking. It blew his urban BTU efficiency arguement completely away. One of the few times I've surprised one of them with facts before they got their blinders on and he was speechless. I enjoyed that :~}
Excellent answer but the previous poster, I believe, was making the point that if it were true would we be willing to step back into an 1870's life style to save the planet. I think the simple answer is NO.
But if that did happen a large part of the world population would die simply from lack of food. Without using and refining oil into all the products we now do, plastics, fuel and fertilizer. That would stop the transport of most foods and since they can't be refrigerated we would be back to a diet of canned foods in the winter and fresh veggies in the summer. Most of the fruit could not be shipped fresh even with the rail road system. We would also be poorly dressed because the transportation of goods rail or sailing ships. The thing that I think I would miss, is a nice cold beer, no refrigeration would stop that luxury.
flapp – i agree it's probably the best/only effective method. I don't want to agree when it's worded that we just turn their own methods around on them. By staying away from ignorance, deception and lying that is eliminated. And real live clips of their own true foolishness should be very easy to obtain.
There used to be a show on spike tv called 'The Man Show'. It may still be on, I don't know I didn't watch it much at all. But one of their episodes I did catch was funny as hell and serves as a great example of your suggestion. The sat up a booth in the parking lot of an NFL game and put up signs to come sign a petition protestesting 'Womens Sufferage'. The women were lined up and anxious – it was pretty hilarious.

Steven Mosher called it right when he said the one of the big missing stories here is the corruption of the scientific publishing mechanism.
It ties into politics, media bias and eco-nuts but the real story that needs uncovered is the way scientific theories are vetted these days. Obviously the vetting process is seriously corrupted when anyone opposing global warming is shut down immediately.
Like the Wicked Witch of the West, the global warming dogma is “melting.” No one should ever again back down from a leftist weenie, it’s fatal to the USA. When they start squalling, you know you’re over the target, lean in harder, and get meaner.

You don't have to know anything about AGW to understand the simple fact that it is questionable if it was possibly based on manipulated data. Even if I don't understand "the science" I do understand the basic concepts of the scientific method we were taught in grade school. I thought the whole point of proving something scientifically was the ability for mulitple people to take the same data & reach the same conclusion. How can other scientests trust the validity of the results if some of the original data was destroyed? I can't imagine a true scientist even thinking about destroying data. I'm not scientist but I've always thought that the only "settled science" were the observable laws of physics etc… & anything else is subject to verification from mulitple sources. If all these scientists are so sure of their conclusions then they should have no problem with other legitmate scientists "fact checking" their work. Even the most brilliant scientific minds have been wrong about some things.

Government spending on science research, doled out through various federal and state agencies, creates incentives that can only pervert the legitimate aims of science: scientists get onto the governement gravy train and start to rely on it to the point that they are willing to direct their efforts in ways that are consistent with the policy aims of their funders. It's a natural phenomenon that any of those scientists would identify if they were observing their own behaviour objectively. But they have become par of the machine; a part of Big Science.

We've been laughing a long time. But they've told the independents that we're racist, sexist, gun-crazed homophobes and we have a lot to overcome. I'm not suggesting that we lie like they do. One reform would be to expect that journals list the papers that they reject for publication, as a matter of scientific integrity. This would hold the journals reponsible for their editorial opinion and their assumed gatekeeper role. They would be more careful and show less bias, with the journal's reputation on the line.
It would be fine to go further and give the reviewer's opinions. This would encourage publishing pro and con views for rejected papers, and posibly for accepted ones also.

it's such a target rich environment! in theory i like your idea, however in practice it's much more difficult to execute when a complicit propaganda arm (the fringe media, formerly known as the mainstream media) wipes away our argument with just the slightest brush. we've been desensitized and trained not to think – and now that this country is being squeezed, some people are starting to come up for air. so long as our own job, our own 401k, our own home isn't affected, life is good.

interesting about that suggestion there Jacey.. this site ran an article yesterday that pointed out that when the progressives hijacked his aspirations Theodore Roosevelt was the first to use the phrase 'lunatic fringe' in referrence to them. 'Lunatic Fringe' is their label to begin with but, as they have exhibited many times, they are masterful at transfering derogatory labels that rightfully belong to them to their enemies.
We can ridicule and expose truths that are humiliating to the point of being humorous.. but their tactics are deceptive and dishonest – we don't have to go that far and shouldn't. it's not necessary and it is not who we are. in this case-just be armed with factual information that 'lunatic fringe' is rightfully their label and be prepared to ridicule the truth that the are just resorting to the stereotypical childish behavior and response; "I'm rubber and you're glue, what you call me sticks to you."
To me, the biggest concern is why these "Reputable" scientists would willingly besmirch their careers over what clearly isa hoak on the global population. It cannot merely be because they are genuinely concerned for the human race; or protecting their lucrative grant monies. In my humble estimation, the real reason lies solely in the advancemnet of Global Socialism. Time and time again the implementation of socialism, marxism or statism has failed everywhere it is tried. Socialist regimes all over the world are in a failed state or are on the verge of failure. The global warming scandal is just another mechanism to feed the Socialist Beast through redistribution of the wealth from hard working Americans. We are seeing the berginnings here in the USA via health care reform and the cap and trade scam. Unless and until we stop teaching this moronic nonsense to our kids in the public schools, we're NEVER going to make a dent in the problem of propagandizing "science." When the schools quit teaching REAL science and started teaching this stupid, touchy-feely nonsense, we were doomed to fight a continuing battle for the truth.
Of all in the scientific community only two die-hard ideologies refuse debate; evolutionists and global-warmists. Surely their data can stand closer scrutiny and questioning, if not for argument sake then to resolve the disagreements that seem to stand in the way of some resolution. But their hand was tipped early on in Copenhagen when less affluent nations came with their hands out. The jig was up, as they say.
I've been trying to distill the truth on GW and after much research, this is what I found:
1. CO2 levels are increasing.
2. Man probably is causing it.
3. CO2 does cause warming, thus man is probably causing warming.
4. (The kicker) It's not that big of a deal.

Steve Mosher, if it's the same guy wrote some excellent books on China a couple of years ago. He was a Ph.D student in China but was kicked out because of his reporting on the Chinese practice of infanticide. The university of California did nothing to support him. He subsequently wrote a book entitled "China Misperceived" which details the reportage of NY Times correspondents like Harrison Salisbury, and Tillman Durdin. Their reporting was totally distorted. But I don't really know if this is the same Steve Mosher.
Carbon is the stuff of life. He (Obama) who controls carbon, especially CO2, controls the world. Think of the consequences if you do nothing!
