Behind the Curtain: Why AARP Supports ObamaCare
by Larry O'ConnorWhen the AARP began its full-throated support for the President’s Health Care Scheme many wondered why this venerable organization would support a plan which would cut hundreds of billions of dollars from Medicare, mostly by putting strict price controls on the very popular Medicare Advantage program.

By putting enormous price controls (cuts) in the Medicare Advantage program, many seniors will be forced to look to the other Medicare supplemental offer, MediGap. It just so happens that AARP sells MediGap coverage to its members. The income generated from those sales accounts for 60.3% of AARP’s revenues, ten years ago, this income only accounted for 10% of their budget.
So, in short, the Obama Health Care Scheme puts hundreds of millions of dollars in AARP’s coffers by forcing seniors off of Medicare Advantage and into MediGap programs. You would think that this was enough of a payback to the AARP for their support. But Big Government now reveals another little prize that has been awarded to AARP in time for their recent official endorsement of the Senate Bill.
The AARP Foundation will have received over $100, 000, 000 dollars in Federal grants by the end of this fiscal year. Last fiscal year they received less than $80,000,000. That is a hell of an increase in this economy. But would AARP sell out their membership for a mere $20,000,000 increase in Federal Grants? It’s not quite as simple as that. The bigger question is: “Why does AARP continue to back a Health Care Scheme which seems to work directly against the interests of their members?”
The answer is: At this point, the AARP doesn’t NEED to care about their members. Frankly, they don’t NEED their members at all.
Let’s look at the numbers:
- The AARP annual membership fee is $16.00.
- In 2007 AARP earned about $500 million in MediGap royalties
- In 2008 it earned $652 million in MediGap royalties
- The 2009 numbers have not yet been released, but given the trends, it’s looking pretty good for AARP.
- Add to that the $100 million in federal grants (that’s your money they are getting for free)
When you look at those numbers and you realize that those MediGap royalties will go through the roof when MediCare Advantage is clamped down by the new system and you can see that all of that income just can’t compare with AARP’s membership’s measly sixteen bucks per geezer.
With this in mind, so much about the AARP’s recent activities makes sense. This is why they jumped so hard on board with Obama’s scheme. This is why they worked so hard against President Bush’s Social Security reforms (there’s no money in a Republican plan that REDUCES the role of government).
This is why they ask “How High?” whenever the administration tells them to jump. Look at their uncharacteristic and peculiar support for the Entertainment Industry Foundation’s participation in President Obama’s “Call to service” on network television programming this Fall as exposed on the pages of Big Hollywood. AARP went so far as to set up its own search engine chock full of volunteer opportunities including phone banks at Planned Parenthood (just what grandma wants their $16.00 to pay for, right?)
It seems that with MediGap income rapidly reaching a billion dollars and with hundreds of millions of dollars in grants, the real constituency for AARP is not the vulnerable seniors they claim to service, but the Big Government fat cats who push cash their way and force through regulations that put their competitors out of business. Kind of makes that 20% discount at Hometown Buffet really worth while, doesn’t it?

THERE'S A SIMPLE SOLUTION TO THIS AARP UNDER THE RADAR MOVE. YOU DIDN'T HEAR ABOUT THIS ON THE MSM, DID YOU? WELL, DO WHAT MY WIFE AND I DID. CUT UP YOUR CARDS, PUT THEM IN AND ENVELOPE WITH A NOTE SAYING YOU NO LONGER BELIEVE THE LEFT LEANING ORGANIZATION IS WORTH YOUR MEMBERSHIP AND TO REMOVE YOU FROM CURRENT AND ALL FUTURE MAILINGS. DO THIS ANYTIME AN ORGANIZATION NO LONGER SERVES THE NEEDS OF ITS MEMBERS. If you need a member discount, join AAA. The discounts are better than AARP, and when you need help, AT LEAST YOU WILL GET IT!
AARP is run by democrats operatives. Where can you find a safe place to launder taxpayers money? Anyone complaining now about big healthcare corporations will be replace with much bigger bureaucrats ran by democrats.
One more thing. How about those evil capitalistic insurance companies? Unless of course, they are in bed with the obummer administration! Nothing money can't buy, right?
It was very obvious the AARP had been bribed to go against its membership. It's no different with our elected officials selling their vote for political favors and incentive packages. If the American public would simply return to voting based on the candidates character rather than empty rhetoric our nation would be far better off.
I've said it before, follow the money trail…It's always about the money!!!
AARP mantra: We here to look out for you, until you interfere with us getting rich. Yeehaaaa suckas! What will they do if they don't have any members???
Same with the American Physical Society's leadership endorsing Goebull Warming, over the protests of the rank and file membership. Ditto the AMA and Obamacare. Co-opting the bosses is SOP: socialism (red or black) is always a top-down enterprise.
"And the animals looked from pig to man, and man to pig, and from pig back to man again…."
I really hope IF this monstrosity passes that some AARP members sue their organization and bankrupt them.
The discovery phase alone would be worth it, imagine AARPGate, you can never have to many "…Gates" in a Profascist amdinistration like this one.

Agreed – there's genuinely no party that hasn't investing time and money on it's own goals rather than how to get affordable healthcare out there. Ho-hum…
Seniors, welcome to the "New World Order" under Obama-care!
Call your senators, this IS having an affect on them. Reid may not have the votes and if we keep the pressure up they will listen. Be polite but firm. Do not support this bill or you will not be a senator after next year.
Call the DC office and the local office. Demand that the staffer take your name and your objection.
Be prepared it will take time, you will get busy signals and spend time on hold. Take vacation day to do this if you must!
Tell you friends and relatives to do so also. Tell people you meet on the streets to do this.
CALL CALL CALL.
They will do the will of the people if the people make their will known.
This disaster must be stopped! Our freedoms and our children's freedoms are at stake!
Christmas eve vote! These people are truly vile and evil, the good among them can be found and convinced to follow the path of liberty but you have to call!
Don't remove your name! Every time the send an application, do what we do. Write in big black marker "No thanks, not untill you get on the right side of health care, and thanks for the stamp" and mail it back on their dime. I now get excited when I get one!
everything this congress has done, has been behind closed doors or in the middle of the night! I just love this TRANSPARENCY!!
Did you know that Jennie Chin Hansen the new aarp president was elected in 2008 -2010. She's also from SanFrancisco…..She has worked in healthcare insurance for seniors for 25 years in sanfran. You are right that all aarp wants to do is sell insurance.
If the AARP web site is accurate, there are 40 million AARP members. This amounts to $640M in membership fees. The article should mention this to put perspective on the portion of income from the various sources.
Can someone send OBUMMER a Webster's Dictionary for CHRISTmas, seeing that he doesn't know what TRANSPARENCY means!!!
John: Thank you for your comment… I looked at that… the problem is that no one believes the 40 million number anymore… I did state that in FY 2008, the income from the insurance royalties accounted for 60% of their income, and I provided a link backing that up. I suppose it is implied that the other 40% is mostly made up from the dues. The larger point is that in ten years the insurance royalties have gone form 10% to 60% of their income, and if the Obama Health Care Scheme goes through, that percentage is going to increase ENORMOUSLY as the MediGap that AARP is pushing will be the only game in town for anyone looking for a viable alternative to straight Medicare.
AARP seems to be equilivant to ACORN in leaching money from our Government.
If AARP is not the only source of the MediGap plan then we should purchase them from other providers. It is time to put AARP out of business as they masquerade as something different than they are.
Hmmm…I wonder if she's a close friend of Nancy Pelosi?
That's what I do too. lol
not only did I cut up my card, I will not buy their insurance under any circumstance. I will die from lack of medical care first.
Bring down the AARP – by any means neccessary.

Did not endorse the Senate bill? What are you talking about, no one has seen the Senate bill.
Endorsing the house bill is supporting Obamacare. Title of this post 'Behind the Curtain: Why AARP Supports ObamaCare', so what the hell exactly is your point? You sound like a drone.
Great article; I was wondering what was behind it….time to take some action now…..
There are two organizations representing citizens 50 plus.
AMAC, the Association of Mature American Citizens has 10's of thousands of members
AARP has 26 million Members.
The leadership of AARP has proven themselves to be a liberal leaning group that endorsed expensive Obamacare, without the consent of their members.
AMAC (pronounced A- Mack) is one of the leading groups fighting against President Obama's health care initiative. AMAC has organized "Tea Parties" and participated in rallies against expanding government and raising taxes.
AMAC is pro-life, pro Second Amendment, and thinks government has grown too large and powerful. AMAC feels our elected officials are ignoring the will of the people. The proof of this can be seen in the way Congressmen and Senators have been treating their constituents at the various town hall meetings.
Cut up the card, number 500, that came in the mail today. Never joined, never will. Sent back in envelope suggesting they do a form of fist-gate with it.
i also cut up my membership card and mailed it back with a note accusing them of being bought off. now whenever i get anything from them i return iot with REFUSED written across it.
AARP also endorsed Hillary care!!! So this endorsement
shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone..
What a crock this article is. How about some honest reporting, and cite the figures that AARP earns from endorsing Medicare Advantage plans. That's right, AARP endorses two MA plans, and is estimated to have earned $200 million in 2009 (Bloomberg). And yet you leave that out because a) you didn't do your homework or b) you have contempt for your audience and realize that to acknowledge this fact is to take the weight out of your argument.
Come to think of it, I think the answer is "a". I think you're incompetent. Because contrary to what you say in this article, the AARP did NOT endorse the Senate bill. They endorsed the House bill. Duh.
Nice try, biggovernment.com. You're as dishonest as any politician in DC
AARP gained a great deal of its membership and initial success with people joining and paying the nominal (then) $7.50 membership fee to gain access to perks — discounts on travel, lodging, restaurants, etc. These "convenience members" paid no attention to the ideological direction the organization was taking, because their only interest in membership was the discounts and perks. Meanwhile, their membership fees were helping the org grow. It is a leftist outfit and, I believe, has always been a leftist outfit. I'm not sure if I was aware of that prior to their activism to defeat Social Security reform (especially individual and/or privatized accounts, which would absolutely be in the interests of anyone paying into SS – all of us), but that certainly clarified their position — which is in their own interest, not in the interest of seniors.
Contin: For $12.50/year, you will know we are working on your behalf to stop socialism in America. Contin
We need more members so we can have more clout with office holders. We need to counter the influence of AARP when they say they are speaking on behalf of Americans aged 50 and over.
AMAC will lead this fight knowing we can win, if you and other patriot Americans stand behind us. .

A real alternative and cheaper than the leftie AARP.
[...] usual, AARP looks out for itself, not its [...]
Got my last membership application back around '96. I called them a d#### bunch of communists for supporting gun control and told them where to put their application. No more applications since then.
Dude, they sold out their members at least 20 years ago. Check their position on gun control.
"Follow the Money" and you'll find the crooks.

I wouldn't believe Mr. O'Connor. This is just the "we got ours, screw you" crowd pushing against health care reform. We know that the Medicare Advantage program is just a big payout to the insurance companies. They administer Medicare at about five times what it costs the government to do it, and get the subsidized profit. As near as I can tell, the service the patient gets is about the same.

You’ve explained that perfectly. I understand the detail you have put in this posting. I understand very shortly our dental insurance will expired. We will be seeking this type of plan simply because we do have three children we must take to the dentist. Appreciation for the info on this!
For most families, daycare expenses form a huge chunk of their monthly budget, and it has become extremely difficult for them to see a way through it.
