In Washington, It’s the Money that Talks
by Star ParkerWashington’s latest bailout of bleeding state governments, $26 billion worth, has gotten attention because, among other things, almost half the bailout is financed by cutting $12 billion from food stamps.
But isn’t food stamps a signature program for the liberal Democrats who passed this spending bill? Isn’t government money for the poor what Democrats are supposed to be about?
How, in these tough times, do Democrats who control congress decide who’ll get funded and who not?
This is the latest example, particularly illustrative, showing that Washington is less and less about ideas and values, and more and more about interests, power, and money.
In this case, we’re talking about unions. Of the $26 billion the bill appropriates, $16 billion goes to state Medicaid programs and the other $10 billion to unionized state and local government employees.
Of the top twenty PACs in the country, eleven are union PACs. Number eight on the list is the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Workers ($1.8 million dollars in campaign contributions in the current election cycle). Number seventeen on the list is the American Federation of Teachers ($1.5 million in contributions).
Needless to say, around 100% of these union political contributions go to Democrats.
Union membership today is mostly a government phenomenon.
Whereas 7% of private sector employees are unionized, 35% of government employees are.
So with each incremental growth in government, unionized workers gain disproportionate power and influence over all our lives. Unions understand that big government is their bread and butter, so unions, that represent 15% of all American workers, account for more than 50% of the nation’s largest Political Action Committees.
The problem should be clear. Regardless of the narrative you want to use to explain how we got into the current difficult economic times, there is only one way out. That’s flexibility, creativity, and innovation.
But in areas that are unionized – mostly government – we hit the wall. Union contracts prohibit wage adjustments or any kind of market flexibility.
Over the last ten years, wages have risen for state and local government workers by 19% compared to 9% in the private sector.
Nobel laureate economist Gary Becker writes: “During this recession, wages did fall for many workers, but mainly among non-union workers….For example, the state of Illinois has the largest fiscal deficit as a percent of its budget of any state… It required many of its high level non-union employees to take 24 unpaid leave days, or about a 9% cut in their salaries, since the state government cannot touch the wages of their many unionized employees.”
Regarding pleas about saving teachers’ jobs, it’s not about this at all. It’s about teachers’ unions refusing to make concessions and hard adjustments like all Americans are making.
Steve Moore of the Wall Street Journal recently wrote about the refusal of the teachers’ union in Milwaukee to negotiate with the local school board and make any concession in which teachers would have to contribute something to their health plan. Their plan, according to Moore, costs taxpayers $26, 844 per family, compared to $14,500 which typifies private employer plans.
The union held out, letting some teachers get laid off, waiting for bailout from Washington.
Priorities in Washington have always been influenced by who’s got the money as opposed to who’s got the ideas. Today mores than ever.
And for the poor?
The main way to end the poverty cycle is to get poor children educated. And it’s the teachers’ unions that fight school choice.
A major driver of poor youth unemployment is the minimum wage, aggressively supported by unions.
But unions have campaign funds. So they will step ahead of the poor in line when Washington sets priorities. This will be true whether it’s a question of funding existing programs for the poor, like food stamps, or pushing forward innovative market based ideas to combat poverty.

Once again, what our POTUS and his minions are doing makes no sense. The only answer I can come up with to explain this is at some time in the POTUS childhood, being passed from Mother to Father back to Mother to another Father to Grandma, one of them dropped him on his head.
Hence the need for ABOLISHING PUBLIC UNIONS. Public means TAXPAYER FUNDED and using these funds for a consolidation of power for their own self interest at the expense of taxpayers is as destructive, corrupt and immoral as bailing out banking speculators.

Repeal and Replace the Anti-American Policies of the Obama Administration ASAP after Nov elections. Then bring charges against obama admin for Abuse of Power, Deriliction of Duty, Failure to uphold their OATH of office to enforce The Constitution, and for Crimes against a Nation, for deceitfully passing unfinished, Un-read Bills, against the will of the "The People!"

I could be wrong but I do believe that the reason they took that money from the Food Stamp program,……..
was because the program was over funded in order to deal with the inflation that never came.

the Dems made this 26 billion heist a little more palatable.
One could say, in this climate, they did the tax payers a favor.

We are witnessing the second stage of globalism. In the first stage, workers who compete directly against workers in other countries have been most effected. (And don't go blaming NAFTA. Companies that had to compete against global competitors had to chose between keeping high-cost operations here versus opening low-cost operations elsewhere. NAFTA gave many of them the ability to stay here, but worker wages still suffered.) What we are now seeing are workers who do not compete directly against foreignors starting to be impacted by the reduction in marginal spending and tax receipts caused by the first round. This was delayed and blunted by the credit boom, but Americans are now living within their means.
The GOP might have to have poll watchers, this time around!

The choice of a public employee union bailout over feeding the hungry has a clear market rationale: It is the most economical deal. It minimizes patronage cost (in dollars/vote).
Buy the vote. It is all about purchasing loyalty. It certainly can not last too much longer. The value of the dollar is about to drop fast. The ink will be worth more. What then, the only thing of value will be labor. Oh, oh!
The sadest part is that in Nov this year and 2012 the souless republicans have to run someone against Oblabby. In most every race I view I don't want either canidate. This is really the mess that got us here…either the dog or the dog —t to vote for…we have to get off both parties as real canidates aren't there for America.
Between who we get to vote for from the "PARTIES", the systematic greed, and the Hugo Chavis voting machines we use I don't think we have much chance unless we just vote out emcumbants for the next 10 election cycles regardless of who they are.

The democrates aren't interested in in helping anyone, all they're looking for are large voting blocks of people that they can count on to maintain power. Addicting these voting blocks on their "drug of choice" uh…your money, they can look forward to years of political power.
Voting blocks currently under democratic influence and ones they're looking to cultivate; unions, African-Americans, the Jewish Community, Athiests, Illegal Aliens (estimated at 20M or so new democrates), enviromentalists, Peurto Rico (conning them into Statehood for another block of supposed democrates), and the youth/young/new voter (why else would they take over the student loan program?). Although they might lose the Jewish community as this administrations has demonstrated some anti semetic tendancies.
The question you really have to ask is "what good" have the democrates been able to provide these blocks? Other than your money – not much.

Pope Benedict XVI, when Cardinal Ratzinger, wrote an extensive paper in 1984 that's well worth reading for a clear picture of this abomination. It is Marxist, of course, and uses language creatively to change the traditional meanings of Christian teachings and doctrines. This started gaining steam in Latin America in the 1970's, and is very likely one end-product of the communist infiltration of the Catholic Church, beginning at least as far back as the 1930's and 1940's.
Search Bella Dodd for additional information – she was the NY head of CPUSA and testified before HUAC in the 1950's about hundreds of comrades enrolled in seminaries with instructions on upward mobility within the Church hierarchy to positions of influence. Benedict's Liberation Theology paper can also be found with a Google or other search..

It's fascinating that in a article whining about how unions buy politicians and mentioning that creativity and innovation are important that you offer no choices about handling the current situation politically. Small donors can't compete against the large PACS ONLY because political promises are worth exactly what you pay for them. I've tried to get the Republican Party of Texas to start a page where ALL THE MONEY donated goes to against specific POLICIES where you fill your cart with the policies you support and they money only gets disbursed a month before the general election to politicians that sign the 'McCain Clause' saying they will introduce the bill every session and never vote against it OR they're PERSONALLLY RESPONSIBLE for returning the money. I bet they stay bought that way!

A friend of mine ran for Congress and one of his bumper stickers was "When in Doubt, Vote Them OUT!". If you aren't involved in party politici you are letting someone else select your candidates. Get active. Become a precinct chair or a member of the XParty Executive Committee (which is elective!). When you can spend the money you can influence our current situation. The grassroots can take over a party with determination and change it's direction in a single election cycle.

Government unions must come to an end. When JFK signed executive order 10988 in 1962, he set this country towards eventual bankruptcy. So here we are, the pigs are at the trough, and to right the ship of state will require bold steps, not half measures. Reverse executive order 10988. That would be a bold, and great start.

I'm just reading a book from 2006 by Orson Scott Card called "Empire" dealing with the overthrow of the American government. Some good writing and insights. I'm not sure how it turns out – sort of like where we are as a nation right now. The question the book asks over and over is: "Will American troops fire on American civilians if ordered to?" A rather timely question. Can't wait to see how it turns out.
Now that's a great project! We need more ot those kinds of transparency and accountability projects installed into our Fed Govt to restore faith in our Country! Otherwise we'll soon be in full Revolution mode! Nice job SenMark! We will back that!

I had the privilege of hearing you speak to the Greater New Orleans Tea Party earlier this year. I learned a lot during that presentation, and it has continued to motivate me.

I've never heard a President speak to the country the way he does, specifically his "loyal opposition" (as they say it back in Britain). It gives me the chills, as it sounds exactly the way fascists, communists and other totalitarians sound. They can't refute the facts, so they attack the messenger.

I don't want to be contentious, but what he is doing might not make sense to you, yet it makes perfect sense to him and creeps like him. If he can pull it off, the votes will, over time, be with his agenda–unless we persevere and undo EVERYTHING that they have done for the last 75 years.
Private sector unions hold usually single companies hostage–sometimes whole industries. Public sector unions are a cancer that infects us all.
How come no progs have shown up to defend the cutting of benefits to the poor so the unions don't have to make a sacrifice?

After many years of feeling very confused about the Progressive "message" and the decline of our society, I am so relieved to finally understand what has been happening.
I and my family will be forever grateful to Glenn Beck for his time, energy, efforts, dedication and intelligence given towards this catastrophic problem we are faced with.
I am a loyal Tea Partier in the Greater New Orleans Tea Party, and in the course of several months last year, I had the occasion to attend events where I heard two specific people speak, which woke me up, and shook me to my core. (the quotes below are not exact quotes, but close.)
1.) One of our outstanding Tea Party members, who is a passionate, intelligent and patriotically articulate woman from Cuba, who said, "Socialism is coming people, and you need to stop it! You have to say NO to Socialism!!"
2.) A gentleman from Germany who had actually been a member of the Hitler Youth, who said, "Socialism is coming people, and you need to stop it. They are after your children."
Since then I have the privilege of hearing more and more people from Socialist and Communist countries, who are warning us. Those first two were enough for me.

Those who do not wish to give up those entitlements will find themselves bound. They will be the new slaves. In some respects they are now and will be surprized when the bill comes due. They and their children will be working very hard for the state. They will be building the nice shiney utopia for the elite to enjoy.
My hands are always dirty and I don't need money. For now it just makes life a little more comfortable. Comfort is not required.

Like you my hands are always dirty too. But it does seem more and more folks are less and less willin to sell their vote to the best campaigner, anyway. And the highly negative image they're getting to experience up close and personal, like teachers and gov't employees who are more and more often getting told to bugger off….their union demands are killin us….don't much like that label or the ire that goes with it. They also see their friends suffering while they are, maybe not rollin in dough, know they money will keep comin in.
The whole union thug image is making some of them less than enthusiastic when the Union comes around askin for big turnouts and "pay raise" demands. Some I know have really done what in these times are heroic deeds….they have taken a public stand AGAINST their own union IN UNION MEETINGS.

And I also agree….comfort is always nice, but not when it comes on the backs of friends and neighbors. Just another way to pit us against each other so we won't notice the kingmakers looting the treasury?
And folks wonder why so few decent folks want careers in politics. I am beginning to think the short term citizen legislator GOOOH system might be the only sane way to get average Joe's involved without allowing them to turn into career hacks like we have now.
Why do I always need a PROZAC after a day of politics? No wonder so many are alcholics! It cannot be allowed to stay this way or we'll never know peace or not have to spend every day watchin gov't.

Oh do I agree! I've had my confrontations with shop stewards and union leadership. Leadership is looting the dues for campaign contributions and selling a false bill of goods to the members. They are waking up.
The entitlement crowd stands on the sidelines cheering the one who will give them the most from the backs of the working folk. The "political royalty" should perhaps go the way of the Czars. I believe that November will be something of beauty. Nothing like we can even imagine. Even the liberals are waking up. Progressives are done but the death throws will be nasty I fear.
Our generation may not know peace but I will be certain that my children and grandchildren will. They will at a minimum know I gave my last breath trying.
