The Left’s Assault on (Teacher) Standards
by Seton MotleyWith the ever-increasing role the federal government is playing, the state of primary and secondary education in these United States has over the last thirty-plus years decayed – tragically, tremendously and inexorably.
President Jimmy Carter’s 1979 gift to the teachers’ union Educrats – the Department of Education – changed fundamentally and increased dramatically the federal role in K-12 education.
Government schools have year by year diminished as education facilities – and risen instead as indoctrination centers.
Where graduates can’t read the diplomas they’re handed – but they can roll a condom on a banana.
The taxpayer money spent on schools and union pet projects has increased again and again, year after year.
We’ve by now since the Department’s inception more than doubled per student spending – from $5,718 (1980-81) to $10,441 (2007-08) (yes, that’s inflation-adjusted).
The mythical import of lowering student-teacher ratios (it makes little to no difference in learning) imposed upon us a rash of new union hires – that did nothing to improve education, but did a great deal to inflate the union dues-paying rolls.
Yet another myth – Head Start – also does nothing to improve scores, but does a great deal to improve the unions’ bank accounts.
So too do the myriad new administrators (read: non-teaching bureaucrats) added to the taxpayer payroll. The non-teacher to teacher Educrat ratio has for decades gotten worse, and worse, and worse.
Despite all of this new spending – and with the fostering and funding of all of these education myths – reading and math test scores have not risen an iota since the Department of Education’s creation.
And the level at which they’ve flat-lined is alarmingly low.
And this year marked an all-time rock bottom for Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) scores. The. Worst. Ever.
All hail the Department of Government-izing Schools.
The universal Educrat response? “We’ll get rid of the tests.”
If you’re stinking up the joint – and you know it, and you (certainly) don’t want to make changes to the education gravy train graveyard – you systematically get rid of any and all ways of assessing your stink-upiness.
There may very well be a legitimate discussion to be had about the value-level of standardized tests. The point here is – this is not at all why these folks are seeking to end them.
—–
The Educrat appraisal exam currently being targeted for elimination is the one that is now most blatantly demonstrating their collective incompetence – the SAT.
Behold the new tome: SAT Wars: The Case for Test-Optional College Admissions. A series of essays calling for making the SAT – an elective. (And – does anyone doubt? – eventually a thing of the past.)
The book is edited by Joseph A. Soares, a Professor of Sociology at Wake Forest University. Which went SAT “optional” a few years ago. So this tome is – for them – a self-justifying prophecy.
Some of the essays’ authors are college admissions Educrats. Some are college professors.
And some are from the Leftist anti-assessment outfit called FairTest.
—–
Behold FairTest’s policy prescriptions.
They are against K-12 testing. They’re against university testing. They’re against teacher test-based merit pay.
In short, they have been working since 1986 for an accountability-free education system. From kindergarten all the way through college.
FairTest’s current projects include:
- Uncovering the bias, misuses and coach ability of the SAT, ACT and similar college entrance exams
- Stopping the misuses of SAT/ACT scores to determine eligibility for college financial aid such as National Collegiate Athletic Association’s initial eligibility rules (Propositions 48 and 16) and the National Merit Scholarship Competition
- Promoting test score-optional policies for college admissions
- Attacking the false notions that test scores equal merit
- Monitoring the unregulated and highly profitable testing industry, particularly its rush to computerized testing, by “Examining the Examiners”
- Exposing flawed employment tests, such as the National Teacher’s Exam (NTE), and advocating hiring and promotions systems based on genuine performance
In short, an all-out assault on all things assessment – and those doing the assessing.

There’s the Woods Foundation of Chicago.
On whose board of directors President Barack Obama sat from 1993-2001.
Joining Obama on the board in 2001 was Bill Ayers. In whose home then-community organizer Obama launched his political career.
Ayers is an “elementary education theorist” – and Venezuelan Communist dictator Hugo Chavez-lover, and unrepentant Weather Underground bombardier terrorist.
Some of Ayers’ “elementary education theories?”
He wants to indoctrinate elementary school students – children between the ages of 5 and 12 – so as to get them to work to overthrow the American capitalist system.
And let us quickly peruse Ayers’ “Critical Pedagogy” – on what Ayers thinks is important to focus as a teacher:
The primary assumption of critical pedagogy is that disparities between individual and social group outcomes in life are due to entrenched societal oppression. So, if anyone or any group has ‘more’ than another it is because they are either oppressing others or benefiting from the ‘oppression of the masses’.
Thus, all whites benefit from an unjust social system and, as a result are inherently guilty of racism.
Advocates implicitly deny any definition of the ‘pursuit of happiness’, which does not result in equality of outcome. That necessarily limits American’s liberty and their pursuit of happiness to the politically correct calculus of Critical Pedagogy theory.
Lovely.
FairTest is also funded by the United Church of Christ.
As in the Chicago branch being Trinity United Church of Christ – which President Obama attended for twenty years.
With President Obama’s “mentor” and “spiritual advisor.” The man who married the President and Michelle. The man who baptized their children. The thoroughly unreasonable Reverend Jeremiah Wright.
As in “God D**n America.”
As in “You are not now, nor have you ever been, nor will you ever be a brother to white folk. And if you do not realize that, you are in serious trouble.”
As in “them Jews ain’t going to let (President Obama) talk to me.”
That guy.
In case anyone thinks I’m unfairly painting all of the United Church of Christ with President Obama’s two-decade digs – there’s their March 14, 2008 written defense of Reverend Wright and his love-ful sermon-ology. Which begins:
In the wake of misleading attacks on its mission and ministry, Chicago’s Trinity United Church of Christ is being lauded by United Church of Christ leaders across the nation for the integrity of its worship, the breadth of its community involvement and the depth of its commitment to social justice.
“Trinity United Church of Christ is a great gift to our wider church family and to its own community in Chicago,” says UCC General Minister and President John H. Thomas. “At a time when it is being subjected to caricature and attack in the media, it is critical that all of us express our gratitude and support to this remarkable congregation, to Jeremiah A. Wright for his leadership over 36 years….”
And so it goes with FairTest and their funding.
—–
Why are all these radical Leftist joints kicking coin to FairTest? Because they are all of very like mind.
The Left is rife with entities that pose as promoters of issues – but they are first and foremost promoters of Leftism.
The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) is truly about the advancement of Leftism – not (all) Colored People. Ask Clarence Thomas.
So too with the National Organization for Women (NOW). Ask Sarah Palin.
So too is it with FairTest.
Their stated agenda is of secondary import to their advancement of the Left agenda.
Of which a fundamental tenet is the proactive breakdown and destruction of standards – assessments – of all sorts.
Testing, teaching – any and all.
At which FairTest is diligently at work.

Another good and interesting article on this subject I read earlier this morning. http://pajamasmedia.com/tatler/headline/what-if-t...
Yet another case for homeschooling and/or "school-stamps".
Unions, and Unions alone, have totally destroyed the once vaunted Public Education System in the United States of America.
As long as one Union Member still breathes the Public Education System in the United States of America will remain at the bottom of the barrel in the Industrialized World.

"Homescholers for Perry"
no surprise here…
The Progressive movement has always been about inculcation/indoctrination- NOT education. To much knowledge is a bad thing in their textbooks. One page on Marilyn Monroe and Madonna, and ONE page on World War II.
And don't question anthropogenic climate change, or inquire as to Mao Tse Tung's mass genocide. As Michelle Obama famously said , 'we must CHANGE our history' This begs the question: Why?
Because the 'fundamental change' they seek rquires an institutional amnesia on part of the entire country…
While I will still maintain that there are a few good individual teachers out there in the public schools, there is not one shred of evidence that the teachers unions have done or intend to do anything that is good for our kids or good for America. They and the Dept of Ed and ALL public sector unions and at least half the agencies and bureaucracies of the Imperial Federal Government have to go.
The universal Educrat response? “We’ll get rid of the tests.”
i would've guessed- "We need to throw more money at it." -but eliminating all ability to assess the performance of students, teachers & admin is definitely a big chapter in their playbook. other big excuses include: "It's the parents' fault." & "But schools are expected to do SO MUCH MORE these days than just teach the basics!"
….."Medication and a Padded Cell for Canuck-Spit"……
I would like to know how many times the ACT and SAT have been reworked over the years to have the scores merely flat line instead of plummet. There is no way most of these kids could even pass the tests I took, much less score similarly.
Kids today are not stupid, but they don't seem to have learned anything.
Consider that in the 40's and 50's high school dropouts could create and run successful businesses. Now college graduates can't read, write or do arithmetic.
Indoctrination is easy. Teaching requires diligent work & willingness to learn from the students as well as imparting knowledge.
“It is easier for a tutor to command than to teach.” John Locke
I have a theory.
The reason that unions are being hurt in the recent past, is because they have been HIRING the students that they have been "teaching" and they are no longer able to "debate" the pros and cons with the people they are against!!! ONLY a TRUE education will prepare our young to COMPETE!!! Centralized power NEVER survives.
Leftists oppose education because only the ignorant would follow their agenda.
Producing students ignorant of their country's heritage, our rights and responsibilities is by design. You can't build the "worker's paradise" without an ignorant citizenry.
You have to dumb down the populace if you want the transition from capitalism to socialism to go smoothly. I saw this was what they were doing back in the day. They offer distractions with flashing lights and movie stars while eliminating the ability to critically think. They mold the populace into a group-think animal that responds just like Pavlov's dog.
I urged you all to constantly not accept what they say ( the kids) but ask them to define their terms. They won't be able to in most cases. Don't accept rote rcitation. Have them speak in their own words. I think it is the best hope of alerting them to what is being done to them.
The only graph you'll ever need to see about education and spending.

Reagrding home schoolers. Yet AGAIN you are on the wrong side. I could show you literally hundreds of signs from your side. Your side butchers the language so much that they re-name it from English to "Ebonics". Not exactly the side I would choose to stand by, but you aren't a thinking person.

Zoloft and Abilify hardly mask the ugly truth that "Canuck Grit" is a product of the machine were talking about!
Luckily, homeschooling is making a big comeback in Alabama, due to the new immigration law.
Every single problem with THE SYSTEM was created by THE SYSTEM! I am infuriated with the purchased "useful idiot" teachers. They never stand up, they'll tell you in confidence what's wrong. It's just the pay is so good, and it's so much easier to go along.
My argument is this……when the area in which we live, rural-(farms and zero production) is left with just those who don't pay taxes and teachers, then what have you accomplished? Those who can work and want to work are leaving the area, so you're left with those who don't or won't. Well, that's a fine how do ya do. Now what? Ship the kids to the next big town for "schooling"?
Somewhat off-topic but is a pretty good assessment of our public education system. This was sent to me by my public school teacher wife, a conservative, God-fearing woman who hates her union.
Scenario 1:
Jack goes quail hunting before school and then pulls into the school parking lot with his shotgun in his truck's gun rack.
1957 – Vice Principal comes over, looks at Jack's shotgun, goes to his car and gets his shotgun to show Jack.
2011 – School goes into lock down, FBI called, Jack hauled off to jail and never sees his truck or gun again. Counselors called in for traumatized students and teachers.
Scenario 2:
Johnny and Mark get into a fist fight after school.
1957 – Crowd gathers. Mark wins. Johnny and Mark shake hands and end up buddies.
2011 – Police called and SWAT team arrives — they arrest both Johnny and Mark. They are both charged with assault and both expelled even though Johnny started it .
Scenario 3:
Jeffrey will not be still in class, he disrupts other students.
1957 – Jeffrey sent to the Principal's office and given a good paddling by the Principal. He then returns to class, sits still and does not disrupt class again.
2011 – Jeffrey is given huge doses of Ritalin. He becomes a zombie. He is then tested for ADD. The family gets extra money (SSI) from the government because Jeffrey has a disability.
Scenario 4:
Billy breaks a window in his neighbor's car and his Dad gives him a whipping with his belt.
1957 – Billy is more careful next time, grows up normal, goes to college and becomes a successful businessman.
2011 – Billy's dad is arrested for child abuse, Billy is removed to foster care and joins a gang. The state psychologist is told by Billy's sister that she remembers being abused herself and their dad goes to prison. Billy's mom has an affair with the psychologist.
Scenario 5:
Mark gets a headache and takes some aspirin to school.
1957 – Mark shares his aspirin with the Principal out on the smoking dock .
2011 – The police are called and Mark is expelled from school for drug violations. His car is then searched for drugs and weapons.
Scenario 6:
Pedro fails high school English.
1957 – Pedro goes to summer school, passes English and goes to college
2011 – Pedro's cause is taken up by state. Newspaper articles appear nationally explaining that teaching English as a requirement for graduation is racist. ACLU files class action lawsuit against the state school system and Pedro's English teacher. English is then banned from core curriculum. Pedro is given his diploma anyway but ends up mowing lawns for a living because he cannot speak English.
Scenario 7:
Johnny takes apart leftover firecrackers from the Fourth of July, puts them in a model airplane paint bottle and blows up a red ant bed.
1957 – Ants die.
2011 – ATF, Homeland Security and the FBI are all called. Johnny is charged with domestic terrorism. The FBI investigates his parents – and all siblings are removed from their home and all computers are confiscated. Johnny's dad is placed on a terror watch list and is never allowed to fly again.
Scenario 8:
Johnny falls while running during recess and scrapes his knee. He is found crying by his teacher, Mary. Mary hugs him to comfort him.
1957 – In a short time, Johnny feels better and goes on playing.
2011 – Mary is accused of being a sexual predator and loses her job. She faces 3 years in State Prison. Johnny undergoes 5 years of therapy.
Why not try dealing with the issue at hand just once you pathetic far-left sheep?
Why is it that you pathetic far-left asswipes cannot deal with the issue at hand? I know you think you are being clever, but by not dealing with the issue you just prove that you are a typical ignorant regressive.
Thank John Dewey, for sowing the seeds of all this "education" in the US.

"The time is near at hand which must determine whether Americans are to be free men or slaves."

Think that NOW is for women? Wrong it's about collectivism and big government totalitarianism.
Think that the NEA is for the children? Wrong it's about collectivism and big government totalitarianism.
Think that CBC is for black advancement? Wrong it's about collectivism and big government totalitarianism.
Every single issue movement on the left is for but one thing and that is collectivism and big government totalitarianism.
You really want to get ahead in life study Math English and Physics(with a little Electronics) in high school. Learn those, then when you graduate go to your Airforce or Navy recruiter and take some test, you will find they will let you study Electronics and work on some of the most modern systems in the world and all the time they will be paying you. After 4 years you will have a great skill that will assure you great jobs all your life and the opportunity to have your education paid for, not go into debt for the rest of your life trying to get an education. It worked in 1969 and it still works today. Just ask anyone in their 60's who took that path then.
Standardized testing is to make sure that children are ready for their next grade. Teachers claiming that they are just teaching for the test is bogus. There is no reason why the students couldn't exceed these standards. It is a report card for the teachers and schools though. Time for a parents' revolution.
Here's one for you –
1957 (actually a few years later, but going with your time frame) L'll Swamp launches model rockets on the school playground. Everyone in the neighborhood sends their children over to watch.
2007 Swamp Junior launches a single model rocket on the school playground. Someone in the neighborhood calls the police who accuse Swamp Junior (Age 9) with violating city, county and state laws, federal criminal codes and, believe it or not, FAA regulations. Police demand to search Swamp Junior's room (and Swamp Thing's house). Police get testy when Swamp Thing refuses to allow said search, even though Swamp Junior had said they could. Threats made to call the Social Welfare Gestapo. Takes three hours to keep kid out of lock up. That fall, principal calls and says that district didn't want to allow Swam Junior on campus due to his trespassing on school property (School is not fenced and is routinely used by neighborhood children during the summer). Takes three more hours and a dozen phone calls to allow kid to start school.
Reagan identified the Soviet Union as being part of an evil empire. He should have looked inward and identified the true evil empire that exists within our government, public education and the unions.
We are witnessing the very conditions our founding fathers warned us about.
Yes, we'd be so much better off with government funded private schools instead. And more homeschooling! LOL!
Wow, Seton gives Glenn Beck a run for his money in crazy-town.
So, Seton remembers 1979. But no memory of 2002 and NCLB? Thats rather convenient.
Is it easy being stupid?
Scenario 9:
Scoop Dawg accidentally discovers reality and though painful at first, is eventually thankful to awaken from delusional slumber.
They homeschool in Alabama!? O. M. G.
Ignorant much?
"Consider that in the 40's and 50's high school dropouts could create and run successful businesses."
They can't today? There weren't nearly as many multi-national corporations stifling entrepeneurship back then.
"Now college graduates can't read, write or do arithmetic."
Really? Thats actually quite hilarious its so ridiculous. Good one.
Wow, thats serious. You must really know what you're talking about.
I respectfully disagree. Unions are certainly a large part of the problem, however Administrators (principals, asst principals, and supervisors) are not union (at least not in my state), and they are just as bad, if not worse. Administrators are only concerned with the appearance of education, not the actual education. A parent complains about a low grade? The administrator pressures (sometimes orders) the teacher to change it. A student misbehaves? Administrators are loathe to suspend him…it makes the suspension rates go up, which makes the school (and hence the administrator) look bad. I have seen two very good administrators and about ten horrible ones. The unions are poor, but so is the leadership (possibly because the administrators tend to be strongly union while teaching). It's a lose-lose situation for the kids and the few decent teachers.
I agree. I teach math and have no problem with standardized testing, provided that the standards are clear. The test is the floor, not the ceiling. The unfortunate part is that public schools are too politically correct to "hold back" or fail a student. So kids fail every subject, every standardized test, and continue through to the next grade. Lots of blame to go around. Teachers, parents, administrators, communities, political correctness run amok…all deserve part of the blame.
I believe that a lot of teachers are afraid of the accountability that comes with standardized testing and merit pay. I am not afraid of it, I actually welcome it, but like anything else run by the government, the liklihood of cronyism and abuse is very, very high. Vouchers may be a better path…I don't know, it seems to me that almost anything will be better than what we have now. Public Education is broken. Perhaps beyond repair.
I believe that passing failing kids is a terrible thing. What are the students supposed to do, learn basic math and algebra during the same year? On the other hand failing used to be fairly common and kids could go to summer school or just repeat a year. Many benefitted.
"Now college graduates can't read, write or do arithmetic."
obviously you've never watched an over-employed cashier struggle to make change when the computerized register has a glitch. i have- many times. it's painful.
and as far as reading & writing go? my wife & i routinely play "spot the typo/grammatical error/plain old f'up in our local lib-rag newspaper- and their employees are college edumakated journalists, doncha know…
yep- the stupid & ignorant are much easier to control.
Scenario 10: PieceofSh!t has colonoscopy to diagnose massive constipation. Proctologist finds his head jammed in his colon clear up to his appendix.
1957: Dr. pulls it out, POS goes on to lead productive life.
2011: POS sues Dr. for malpractice, claiming a constitutional right to live entire life with head lodged in lower GI.
you tell us- you're the expert here.
First off, you think a college graduate who works as a cashier is over-employed? Regardless, how do you know that cashier was a college graduate? Your sense of self-superiority is more painful to observe than a teenager struggling to make change.
Really, you think a typo equates to illiteracy? Clearly, you've never made a typo, huh? You've obviously never worked at a newspaper either. Let it not be said you'll let ignorance get in the way of knowing everything.
Yes actually, much better! If food-stamps works for government-funded grocery stores….
Wow that seems sooooo real…
You have called a spade a spade here. I could not agree more with your assessment. The left in education does not want critical thinkers who will think for themselves and question the bovine fertilizer they are being spoon-fed daily. Please check out my blog at http://revisedhistory.wordpress.com
