Jill Biden – Clueless On Education
by Sergio GorEarlier this week the Department of Education hosted an event at a local high school in Washington, DC. The purpose of the event, which featured Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, Senator Jack Reed (D-RI) and the second lady of the United States, Dr. Jill Biden was to promote the new FAFSA application. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) has been compulsory for any students wishing to receive financial aide or subsidized loans.
The event was well scripted, except for a Biden gaffe. But, in this case, it was not the Vice President who opened his mouth and inserted his foot, it was his wife, Dr. Jill Biden.
Jill Biden has been in the academic circles for close to three decades. She has been an educator for over 29 years. She currently teaches at Northern Virginia Community college, and she has made education one of her focal points in this administration. In fact, Jill Biden regularly travels on behalf of the administration and to visit schools and universities across the nation.
So, it is with this background, it was altogether appropriate the she should be asked her opinion on the elimination of the school voucher program by the Obama Administration. What was not fitting, however, was her erratic befuddled response. To which she responded, “You know, I really haven’t followed it, I’ve been really busy…”
In 2004, the United States Congress, passed what became known as the “District of Columbia School Choice Incentive Act of 2003″, a program that was funded through the federal government and provided scholarships to low-income students in the nation’s capital. Over 1,900 students have benefited from this program, which allows students to attend private schools of their choice instead of public schools.
Recent studies conducted by the Department of Education have proven that this program was working, and continues to help low-income students improve their scores in a wide variety of subjects. Despite its success and its support by 75% of the district residents, the National Education Association, a large education union, has pushed the current liberal congress to strip funding provisions that would have allowed for the programs continuation.
Considering this has been a hotly contested issue in DC, it is shocking that Dr. Jill Biden would be clueless on the topic. Top administration officials, including the President, have publicly stated their opinion on this subject. But how is it possible for someone who bills herself as a leader in education to have been too busy to follow the debate? Perhaps Dr. Biden should go back to school herself and catch up on some vital reading.

I have been following the DC voucher program for some time. When Obama signed the bill eliminating funding over 1700 kids were impacted. How do you think the single mother felt once she opened the letter telling her that little johnny had to go back to the local public school? She cried, I bet, than used the little money she had to get her son a flak jacket. What a travesty – its time for a revolution.

With some of the stories coming out of public schools in major metros lately, and for some time now for that matter, I'd cry too.
This is exactly the reason I rail against unionized public sector workforces, these union pukes came in and shot down that single mother who had a voucher to put her kid in a decent school for their own greedy self centered purposes. I bet member-teachers are appalled and frightened to go up against the machine on any level as well. No one can tell me what these union bosses and their unit reps (field commanders) are like, I've been there with them while they mock the labor force for the repulsive lemmings they are.

Second, I'm seeing some good points here. Absolutely, all of the home schooled children I have observed demonstrated a high level of moral conduct. Some,even, to an almost absurd level. Don't take that the wrong way. I felt a sense of pride for these children, even though I had nothing to do with their up-bringing. Compared to the average child making his/her way through the public system, these kids appeared to be fanatics. It was refreshing to see.
Also, your point about social acceptability was not lost on me. I will, in the future, endeavor to moderate my own rhetoric. When you lay down with dogs, it is not uncommon to wake up with fleas.

I agree with you on the academic issue, but the social issue is completely up to the parents. I have observed home schooled children from several different families. Parents who are not well adjusted tend to pass those traits along to their offspring. That is, however, what adds to the real diversity of our society. So, while I don't agree that home schooled children tend to be more socially well adjusted; I am not willing to argue that they are less well adjusted. All things being equal, no one will give better care to their child than their birth parents. Most of our Founding Fathers were home schooled before pursuing higher education. I'd say that is a ringing endorsement for the concept.

With vouchers, the tax money is given directly to the parents to spend on education. This is vastly superior to letting that same money be spent by bureaucrats who could care less about your child.

She's also aware of the rapidly evaporating support for the big O and anyone assocaited with him, and this was one more opportunity to disassociate herself with him and still have cred with the various unions that hamstring the educational system. My guess is as this year proceeds more and more dems are going to jump ship (6 so far) in various ways and do whatever they can to distance themselves from Obama. School vouchers do not benefit poor families. The vouchers help pay tuition so that upper class can send their kids to private schools (primarily religious) instead of public schools. The money that should go to fund public schools goes to special interest schools and their religious agendas. Vouchers hurt the poor by lowering the amount of money available to hire teachers and purchase computers. Vouchers are a product of the religious right.

It's not the teachers or the school, it's the society that is falling apart. Don't expect the schools to fix the social problems facing this nation today. Those social problems are causing kids to face huge hurdles while they are going to school. Teachers try to teach kids that are impacted by serious economic, health and social problems. How can students stop thinking about the problems at home, in the neighborhood or just the results of poverty when going to school? How do students become convinced that learning to read, write and do math will help them, when what they see tells them that education means nothing more than "outsiders/teachers" telling them to do something that they don't want or have to do? Those that complain about education and teachers do little to find out what really goes on in education. Don't tell me you know because you have a child that didn't do well. Go into classroom and teach. Find out what it's like to do the job. After doing that, then listen to those that ridicule your effort. Keep trying, even when find that you have to buy the supplies and materials needed to try to do the job. Keep trying when students cause disruptions or don't try to do their part. Keep trying when parents can't or won't help. Keep trying when administrators make it difficult. The one thing that I know is that teachers do keep trying. They are the ones that helped those that complain learn to read, write and do math. Take the politics out of education and thank a teacher for staying in a profession that is challenging, frustrating but so rewarding when one more try is made to teach a child, and that child smiles because now he/she understands.

that is what the libs want keep the people down so they have to depend on the goverment they know that if they get educated they will figure out what they are up to i would like to think that the people will figure out that the libs and the dem want to keep them down and not get ahead the dems have said how much they have helped them but yet they are still in the same boat the people have to start thinking about that and how their lives have not changed over the years with the dems they are only lokking out for them selfs and the money they can make the people have to stand up and bring them to acctabilty
