Dodd Bill Makes More Wealthy Government Employees

Recently, people have started to notice that government employees, especially federal employees are starting to make more money than private sector employees. USA Today reported in March that federal employees had salaries of over 12% more than private sector employees in 2008. And, this noted that the benefits were even higher:
These salary figures do not include the value of health, pension and other benefits, which averaged $40,785 per federal employee in 2008 vs. $9,882 per private worker, according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis.
One would think that with regulators failing or watching porn and the public’s estimation of government at an all-time low, Congress would be interested in doing something about this. Not Chris Dodd or the Democrats. Instead, his financial regulation bill actually creates a whole office full of government bureaucrats with unlimited salaries. Let’s look at the text of Section 152 (d).
(d) OFFICE PERSONNEL
(1) IN GENERAL
—The Director, in consultation with the Chairperson, may fix the number of,
and appoint and direct, all employees of the Office.
This means that the Director of the Office of Financial Research picks the size of the department, not Congress. And their pay is set at the discretion of the office, not subject to the rules governing civil servants.
(2) COMPENSATION
—The Director, in consultation with the Chairperson, shall fix, adjust, anadminister the pay for all employees of the Office without regard to chapter 51 or subchapter III ofchapter 53 of title 5, United States Code, relatingto classification of positions and General Schedule pay rates.
Let me make sure I get this right.

Its the new meme…. used to be the Peters Principle… but the government has "improoved" it… Now if you don't pay your taxes, they make you in charge of collecting Taxes! If your a failure as a car company? We bail ya out!… If your blatant gambles fail… we'll give you MORE money than ya lost! If your a Governor who Failed to protect your citizens (Ariz had the highest border crime and kidnapping rate in the nation), we make you in charge of ALL borders!

And politicians think the private sector is a threat to our economy..like hell. Someone needs to push the political elite overboard..and then, hold them under for good measure..Politicians neither sow nor reap..but they spend like crazy..

First off, people aren't "noticing" this about salaries, but a SMALL amount of shut-ins who get their information by this site seem to be fooled by misinformation from the likes of "Veronique de Rugy" (who sounds like some sort of female villain from a Disney movie.) But there are many problems with this oversimplification:
1) There are very few (or no) low-end government jobs. You are using government salaries that include things like engineers that inspect bridges with private sector jobs at Walmart
2) "veronique de rugy" largely backtracked on these claims – trying to compare apples to apples and we see it is NOT so cut-and-dry
3) The globalists like Bush exported many high-paying private sector jobs.
4) During the BOOM TIMES government salaries are a fraction of the private sector – THAT IS THE TRADE OFF. Again, most people understand this except some of the bloggers here…..most of whom have had NO jobs other than in think tanks, universities, etc…..

If I suffer, so should they. I have to tighten my belt, so should they. My taxes pay their salaries after all, and if I'm going to be pinched to keep the government parasite going, then they should accept similar restrictions in their own pay. THAT should be the trade-off to working a job that leaches off the private sector.
Other countries are more friendly to business. They have lower corporate taxes and labor pools that will do the same work an over-paid union does for much, much less. That's what's exporting our jobs.
I pray to GOD that we have some "sane" individuals left in government that can expose the largest heist in U.S. History.

Well, my last company had to cut pay in order to stay afloat. This strategy should be used for government employees since the government is broke. Cut the wages and loosen up all the regulations on the private sector so we can get our country back to work.
At some point this big bloated bureaucractic mess on all levels will collapse under it's own weight..
Instead of cutting back, like ALL in the private sector have had to do, these morons in charge keep ramping up the size and scope of gov'ment.
the are afraid to lay people off as that would increase the unemployment rate making them look worse, but in reality, shrinking gov'ment would help the economy by requiring less in taxes, thereby giving people more money in their pockets…

Well, if you have regulators making a paltry middle class wage of 50K to 100K, attempting to regulate banks where the mail clerk makes that… the regulators might feel unloved and more susceptable to accepting bribes. So we will let them decide how much to pay themselves and they will all take competitive wages to the top traders and that insures they do their job! DUH DODD LOGIC

Except for one thing. Government jobs generally produce nothing. Most of them exist solely to police others whether its needed or not. Why should a government worker get a bonus for producing nothing? I say that as someone who was a teacher for several years, and I could argue that teachers produce more than most government employees.

Yes, they do, but if they didn't have the jobs, how much worse off would they be? You can keep the jobs here in the US and you also keep the money out of those countries. I guess unemployed folks in other countries are meaningless so long as no American company dares operate on another shore.

This is the crux of the difference between public and private sector employees.
In the private sector employees advance and increase their pay through demonstrated efficiency or innovative efforts. Their work and their pay are commensurate with their product.
In the public sector inefficiency and ineptitude are resume enhancers and through the magic of concepts like tenure and union contracts mediocrity is ensured. Whence you find mediocracy corruption lerks at every corner.

My dad was a machinist and worked for the government his entire career. When I was in High School I looked at what machinists were paid in the private sector vs. what his paycheck had on it. Believe me, he made about half of what the market was paying. He was proud of the fact that he had less pay, but a steady job, and he got to make parts for very cool research.
He should be running from his cell mate in prison.

I grew up in the DC area, and many of my family/friends have or do work for the federal gov't. I am not only astounded by the high salaries and benefits, but at the sheer ineptitude of many of the people they work with. My sister is a long time gov't employee – she never finished college but has worked her way up the ladder to make twice what I ever made as a college grad. However, she is a valuable, smart employee that really earns her keep. Can't say the same for the parade of yahoos she has worked with. It's always a topic at family events to hear about the latest person that cannot be disciplined or fired – doesn't happen in the gov't – and what they have done that would be absurd in the private sector. Ex.- her division head with the corner office who spent most of the day playing with his trains or sleeping on his desk, her "secretary" who came in each day 30 minutes late, left 30 minutes early and took a 15 minute smoke break every hour, or my favorite…the person down the hall who tried to strangle her boss. All of them are still there! They just keep transferring them around, thanks to the EEOC.

During boom times salaries of private sector jobs do not explode. If you beleive that you've never held a private sector job. I have held a professional private sector job for 20 yrs. and annual pay increases are pretty consistance and anual pay does fluctuate during boom times. The only people that 'understand this' are ignorant to the facts and ignorant of how the private sector and capitalism actual;y work(like our currrent socialist congress and president). There is a trade off. Government workers accept less pay in return for job security and benefits. And you have to consider the job. A four star general in the army may command 200,000 people and make $200,000 a year. That equivalent responsibility in the private sector would make in the tens of millions each year.
