US Census Workers Knocking on Your Neighbors’ Doors, Looking for Snitches in Memphis

A US census worker, driving a metallic gray Ford Taurus-type car, has been reported to be combing through the Memphis, TN suburb of Germantown knocking on doors asking people for information on their neighbors.
Yes, you read that correctly. The US census worker was asking how many people lived in the house next door on or about April 1, 2010. As if there wasn’t enough controversy with the census already, this just adds fuel to the fire.
According to the source, here’s what happened when Obama’s Orwellian Big Brother knocked:
The census worker identified himself, showed his credentials, and continued to ask if she knew if the house next door was occupied on April 1 of this year. The census worker also indicated that he had “difficulty” contacting the neighbors. After the source confirmed the house was occupied on April 1st, the census worker continued by asking, “How many people occupied that house?”
My source responded by saying, “If they haven’t filled out their census, I can’t help you and I have no intention of telling you anything about my neighbors and your recourse is to enforce your penalties.”
The worker replied, “Well you know why we take the census don’t you?”
My source replied, “Yes, in this case, to redistribute my wealth. And you are not permitted to ask me about my neighbors.”
The worker went on to say that the census is used to figure out the number of representatives and federal monies that would be allocated. The source still refused to answer and the census worker was asked to leave the property.
He then proceeded to knock on the other neighbor’s doors, apparently, to get the information he was sent our for. Let’s just hope that these people are not attorneys because this is a clear violation of the privacy and security procedures of the census to ensure an accurate and secure count. Nowhere in this information does it say your neighbors can provide census information.
In addition to this, last evening another source–in the neighboring suburb of Cordova, TN–had a 15-minute telephone conversation with a US census worker. The census worker asked questions regarding anyone currently living in a nursing home, a child’s address at college (when the student already filled out a census form), handicapped persons in the household, and anyone who may have lived there on April 1, 2010 and moved out after April 1, 2010.
This is a clear abuse of the protocols set forth to ensure the accuracy, privacy, and security of the census. Additionally, I find it disturbing that so many items from the Obama administration need branding and clarification, including the census, healthcare, immigration, global warming [rebranded to] climate change, and basically any other issue they take on. Everything is broken, has been branded, and has a rhetoric-laden marketing plan. Oddly, this administration shuns the branding of products, foods, and the very companies that create jobs for millions of Americans.
For those on the left who cling to the old-school, no rules, free-living, liberal-Democrat roots, it’s time to wake up and see how alarming and further polarizing this move on the part of the government truly is. When will the mask of “good will” be ripped off the left and understood for the intrusive nature and oppression that it entrenches. This administration has continually displayed, through their sophomoric agitation of the people, that they have no conscious when it comes to pitting Americans against one another to achieve their goals.
On a final note, it should be reassuring to the people of Tennessee that the Obama administration does indeed know that the people of TN exist.

These people get paid by how many of the Censusphobes they bring into the light. So they can sometimes be pushy and aggressive, but like any bully they'll back down if you stand up to them. Or, you could just save me the 75 bucks it costs to send them out to your house and just fill out your census form.

I filled out my original form for the census telling them how many people lived in my house as of April 1, 2010. I am not morally or legally obligated to provide them with any other information AT ALL.
Bob… they come to your house even if you fill out the form. Don't blame people for demanding their legal privacy because your government has decided to spend money on trying to get information they have no right or authority to gather. Instead, blame the government.
For the trolls: Yes I know they have a legal obligation to gather certain information through the census. However, they are trying to gather some information through census that they have no authority to gather.

Someone came to my apartment THREE TIMES, even though we sent our form in. Possibly because we marked the number of residents and nothing else? (If they want our names, ages, and incomes, the IRS already has that information. Hrmph.)
Now I'm worried they'll count me twice–I have a temporary second apartment in a different state for business travel and I don't want to be counted here. I'm sure my nice, retired neighbor ladies will be helpful and tell the census workers that I live there, even though my lease is up in six weeks and I wasn't sleeping there on April 1 (I read the directions). I don't want to be counted twice…
i told the census droid on her first visit i'd sent it in (which is true) & wouldn't do it twice, then went in the house. i've since ignored two more notices left on my door.

I had a recent experience with one of these drones. I had been traveling and continued to come home with "attempt to contact" notices on my door. I had never received the mailed census form and had waited until around April 15th to wonder if I ever would receive.
Then one morning one of these guys shows up with a clipboard and he advised me he needed me to answer a few questions and it would only take a couple of minutes. I politely told him that there were two ways I would respond to the Census survey. He could either leave me the form he was getting ready to fill out, or they could mail me one like they were supposed to have months ago.
He said he couldn't do either and was pretty amazed at my lack of cooperation with him and he got a little pushy, telling me that I needed to answer the questions. So I restated my position and told him to pick one of the two options, and when he told me he couldn't, I told him since he couldn't leave the form or mail me one, then we were through with the discussion. He seemed perplexed at my response but left.
I then went on line and found a census form, printed it out and sent them a letter advising them that I have now complied with my obligation to provide the Census information. I also advised them of the pathetic manner in which the Census has been handled and the extreme waste in our tax dollars in the ridiculous advertisement campaign. I have received no response, so I guess I am done.
And these drones are trying to run our country…………..what a bunch of pathetic losers. Now they want to run the healthcare system……………give me a break!!!
If they come to my door, non has yet, I will ask them for all of their information. Think I'll get any? I'm waiting with bated breath.

I had this happen to me when I refused to fill out the census form in 2000. The census worker turned around while I was still standing there and asked my neighbor how many people live in my house.
This year, I filled out only the number of people living in my house and put American as race.
They called the President of my HOA to get information on us. The President's wife gave all the answers they wanted.
If they do come to my door, I won't be answering.

If that had happened to me, I would post her info on the internet and see how she likes it. So glad I live in the country. They won't get anything out of my neighbors.

You spent an article implying the administration is behind nefarious and underhanded tactics by census employees while in the very same article acknowledging those tactics are clear abuses of protocol. What you didn't do was provide even a sliver of evidence that the administration is in some way undermining those protocols. I know pretty much everyone here will think I'm being a knee-jerk leftist for "defending Obama," but I'm not defending him. Frankly, in this case, because he doesn't need defending. What did Obama do, exactly? It's not even implied, let alone stated, it's just assumed the reader knows he did "something" and it was "bad." This compulsive need to tie in every negative action performed by every person everywhere to Obama really decreases the value of articles like this.

The results are going to be skewed in some fashion, this is almost a certainty. And of course the Democratic districts are going to see a big jump in population (wink, wink), while Republican districts will see a fall in population. Oh, and by the way, the census is NOT for distribution of wealth….errrrr… excuse me…allocations of stole…err…. excuse me again, federal funds.

The WH took over the census, so what else are we to think. It is also an "underhanded tactic" to ask neighbors for census information. Everything this administration does is a problem because their true intentions cannot be revealed. That worker should have never gone to the neighbors.

The census workers are also looking for "loose" change and some good sex. Rape, if necessary. Team-O has hired the dregs of America to work as census takers, mainly to hype the employment numbers, if only for a short time.
These census perverts might be from the SEIU, ACORN, Black Panthers, etc. The might even be muslum terrorists, but they are approved by Holder and the O-Team to go into your house and "check it out." Hmm hmm hmm. Isn't one of our Amendments written about not letting people into our houses? Oh, that's right, the O-Team does not believe in or follow the US Constitution. It's defective and racist and does not mandate taking from the hard working and giving to the lazy.
I filled all the fields out N/A. A response is all that is required and that was mine. If they insist on a meeting they will get the same answers.
15 Billion dollars has been allocated to conduct this census, figuring around 330 million Americans this comes out to roughly 45 dollars per every man woman child in this country.
They could have funneled this money into the Post Office saving thousands of jobs there and propped up the postal service as is for several years. But nobody in this country gives a good G*d Da** how they waste this nation's money.
I guarantee this census will be a total failure and they will be in court within days of it ending demanding to use statisatical data to correct their 15 billion dollars worth of mistakes.
What do you want to bet that there are far more census workers going out in lower income democrat voting neighborhoods than their counterparts? It's not about "Censusphobes". The vast majority of people who don't send it in don't because they're lazy or don't think it's important, not because they're "anti-census".
By the way, unless there is some elite group of census workers that work on commission that isn't widely discussed, Census workers work for a wage, not based on how many "Censusphobes" they bring to light.

This same thing happened here in Florida. One of neighbors down the street apparently took a job with the census dept and showed up at my door asking for information about our next door neighbor who had moved to Tennessee but still kept their house here. She actually wanted me to go on record and fill out the census information about my next door neighbors (she obviously had not seen the creative answers I used for my own census form). After a 5 minute cordial discussion, I politely declined her offer and have not heard back since. ….guess they will make it up as they go along.
I worked for the Census Bureau in 1980. This is nothing new. It's how it has always been done. Get a grip.

The advertising campaign and absolute glee about the jobs created by this come from the administration.
The phone and door to door workers have obviously been directed to take these actions. They would not be calling asking about nursing home numbers or kids away at college if they were not directed to by superiors.
This is a systemic issue, not a few bad apples. Read up on all the examples people have sent in to Michelle Malkin sometime, and you will be appauled.
They have been given their directive by the Obama administration and these people have been set loose to see that it is accomplished. I'm sorry, but they are responsible for what their employees do, particularly when they are advised to do these things, not just doing them on their own.
While I agree with the sentiment and I refused to fill out several of the questions, there is census law under which they can impose a penalty of up to $100 for willfully refusing to answer all the questions. Knowingly falsifying answers can be fined up to $500.
The big question is, how likely are they to try and prosecute the thousands (tens of thousands?, hundrededs of thousands?) who only answered the basic questions.
I had my "lovely" census visit over a week ago- I was in a hurry getting ready to go to work, trying to keep my dogs from dashing out the door, etc etc- I was polite, but all I said was "3…2 males, one female- 41, 40, and 20- all American" they tried the "but we need additional information.." line, I repeated my statement, still using a polite tone of voice, and added "do I need to quote the Constitution? Because, I certainly can- enumeration, period." I don't think it was my statement that made them grumble and toddle off more than the fact that my sweet, adorable 175lb mastiff was "smiling" at them. I do love my puppers <eg> I have the most incredible urge to name my newest mastiff baby "Reagan" LOL

Partially filling in the form means they will send people to get the additional info. The Census site says 3 visits is the normal max visits you'll receive, though there are exceptions for quality checks (they sometimes send supervisors to double-check information gathered, etc.).
Asking neighbors, for the reason you pointed out, is a great way to screw up the accuracy of the numbers, not to mention I believe violates the census rules.
Well if you don't want to fill your census form, don't fill it out. Yes, the question about race doesn't seem relevant to redistricting or allocating federal funds. But it's the height of hyperbole to insinuate that we've become a fascist police state because one lone census taker in Elksnot, Tennessee decided to get a little creative.
This same thing happened to us last week in San Mateo, California. A census worker went door to door in our neighborhood asking for information about the names, ages, and gender of children that lived in a neighbor's house. The census worker said she was doing it on orders from her supervisor. The census worker also said that they were googling for information on neighbors when they did not get the information they wanted.

If this census has problems, it is because people such as yourself are trying to scare citizens into hiding from the census takers.
I certainly hope you are not an attorney because you have seriously misread the privacy and security information from the census to which you linked. It says that if you give information about yourself to the census, they will not give it to your neighbors. Each of the examples you cite indicate the census may be getting information FROM your neighbors if you don't give it to them yourself. See the difference between getting information FROM your neighbors about you and giving information TO your neighbors about you? One is a privacy violation, one is not.
If they don't do that, well, the census would be less accurate, wouldn't it, as it would not count the people who are hiding from the census takers?

Happened here in Newport, PA last weekend as well. The house next door happened to be vacant and for sale. She started by stating "dont worry Im not here about yours" as I had the long form and only answered number of occupants and race as American. She then qeustioned me about the house next door that was vacant and up for sale.
She then asked me for my name in case they wanted to contact me about any of the information I had given her (which was none) – I politely declined…
We listed ourselves as humans because that's our racial background.
The question about race has some basis in the Constitution. Some of the others…. Well, let's just say they don't seem to be bound by that document any longer.

I rubbed the census form across my fanny and sent it back. haven't seen any census workers but I do have a big NO TRESSPASSING sign and several nasty dogs to defer them to another neighborhood.

I was in and out of surgery so didn't get the form in on time. A census worker stopped by the other night and my reply to the race question (after a discussion about the inaccurate classifications) was American. She didn't know whether to mark other and put American or put down that I refused to answer the question, which she had to do for most of the questions except the actual count at my house.
Count me as one person of voting age. Anything else is none of the government's business.
Better to be polite because we shouldn't take it out on the messenger. Just answer how many in the house and refuse the rest with a smile on your face.
They feel better because they received info and the government only gets what they are legally eligible to receive. 
I know no one will complain when their state gets less federal highway funding because census statistics show a drop in population, right? Sometimes you can't help stupid.
While they may have "passed" a law with penalties, if/when they try to charge anyone, I would expect a quick trip to the Supreme Court on the Constitutionality of that "law". Total failure on the additional questions being Constitutional and the progressives getting *itch slapped for overstepping their authority.
I read in the paper that they were planning to do this. It's not a secret – they've been very open about it. I guess they don't realize (or care?) how creepy a lot of people find it.

You people need to stop treating the census like it is a communist plot. It's in the Constitution and comes around every ten years like clockwork. Embrace it and make it work for you and stop trying to turn it into a partisan issue.

RIGHT ON! Oh, by the by, you don't have kids living at home do you? Because federal funding for things like local educational resources work off of the census data. Also, things like how many representatives you get in government are based on population counts gathered by the census. But hey, who wants to be represented in their government?

They work for the White house that took over the census. The White House is responsible for everything that they do or don't do in the performance of their duties. Someone should have explained this to the Organizer in Chief when he applied for his current job. If memory serves he had never been the Chief Executive of anything before he somehow got elected to the most important job in the world. The buck has never stopped on his desk and he is doing his damndest to see that it doesn't stop there now.

Hey MR, these people work for and thus represent the executive branch of the US governmnet. therefore, they should be above reproach. they should be held to the same high standard that all federal employees are held to. The government should not hire convicted felons to come to represent it. These felons should not be given government credentials which might cause some citizens, not well versed in their rights, to allow them into their homes.
If one census worker commits a crime or does something immoral, it reflects on all of them and the entire US government.
Nope but it is simple really. All actions have consequences both good and bad. You support an individual who is not qualified, who then staffs his administration with unqualified people, you might expect some disagreement against you. At least this disagreement has resulted in peaceful protest by the TEA parties unlike their opponents who have assaulted police, vandalized homes/stores/vehicles, etc.

The Census is in the Constitution, however the progressive (or one could say marxist) questions that have been added are not in the Constitution. So, I follow the Constitution and provide what is required, refuse to answer the rest of the crap.

This is in response to the loons posting here . I work for the census in florida where there are a large number of homes empty for various reasons . We do in fact contact neighbors in order to determine the status of vacant homes. People can volunteer information if they wish but are by no means required to.I also have went to homes where the occupant stated they refuse to comply . We are required to return 2 times more before turning in the paperwork . We ask no questions that were not on the original census form. Census numbers are used to determine federal funding for the area infrastructure and the number of legislators. By choosing to not be involved only decreases local funding. Just so you know, in my area there more republican than democrat census takers myself included.
For many years, both my mother and I have received our mail at the very same P. O. Box. Neither of us received a census form. I inquired at the post office and was told that the census did not mail the forms to boxes, but only to the physical address. Since I purposely do not have a rural mail box, it was sent back to them. I then called census and was told they would probably hand deliver one to my house by the end of March, but if not, I should get one at a "service center"(a library). The office worker said not to go and get one until after March. I got one, filled out only the number and my race (English-Scot-German American) I figured I could be hyphenated, too. I mailed it the same day.
Around May 1, someone rang my doorbell several times. I was not dressed and was not expecting anyone in my rural area. Then, there was loud pounding on my door. After I heard a car leave, I looked and a census worker had taped a note on my just – cleaned glass storm door saying he would be back in a day or two and giving a number and convenient time to call him. I decided that was not convenient for me so called right then and left a message that I had mailed in my form with all the information that I intended to give so there was no reason to come back. I also told him that I have always received a form at my P. O. Box in previous census years, had to go to trouble to even get the form, and considered this as more evidence of THIS administration's inability to do anything right.
Someone who took a census job because he could find no other told me that they were supposed to go back the third time — then the fourth take a deputy with them. If that happens, I will tell them that I will supply the other information WHEN OBAMA SHOWS ME LEGAL PROOF THAT HE IS A NATURAL -BORN CITIZEN!
They came by my place tp ask about the neighbors. I told them I had sent mine in and they said they "didn't think" they needed any more info from me. I told them the neighbors didn't look like they were home and good luck. When I came back from the grocery store that evening they were (parked) sitting in the middle of the street. The cencus worker seemed nice enough but I do think they have an unwarranted sense of authority.

In addition to my previous post a census interview takes only minutes and can be conducted at the door. The census has been taken every 10 years since 1790. The information is held confidential for 72 years .You can go online and find census information 1930. or prior.If you check it out you'll find the same information your being asked for this census.I hardly think ACORN was the one asking the questions then. By boycotting the census your letting the libs win.
I opted not to send in our census form…mostly because my "gentler half" had blown a gasket over the day's newest government malfeasance, and had written something fairly graphic on it.
Deciding that we needn't need to be put on a "Tea Party Terrorist Watch List," I just shredded it and waited for the visit.
Not to give too much away, but when the census worker visited our house recently, for about an hour, we discussed the crappola that is going on in this government and how unhappy we both were about it. I gave them the BigGovernment group website info, and we parted as new friends. The person just needed the work, and did not agree with the bunch in D.C. one iota.

I am a census worker, I am a Conservative. I'm not getting paid piece work. I'm paid an hourly rate. Those of you who are refusing to even provide the number of people living at your house are cutting off your nose to spite your face. You are harming yourself and your cause by not being counted. OK fine don't answer the other questions. I've interviewed peiole who did not want to provided it. I just documented that fact. Some of the questions are to prompt your memory, or sort through situations where a person filled out a census form elsewhere. The college student for example. Don't be so self centered thinking that your situation is what everyone elses is. I'm not happy with the progressives either, but at least be counted, even if you don't give the other info. I'm not an acorn drone. Several of the people in my training census training class were Christians. Several had been out of work and were glad to have some work, even if only for a few weeks.
A person I heard of told the census worker to get lost and told them he had a gun handy.
The cops will be accompanying the census worker the next time…
It is actually in our best interests to tell them how many people live in YOUR home, because that is how the Congressional districts are drawn up.
Also, it is the law that you must comply on the basics. I know, the Federal Government is selective in which laws they choose to enforce, but that will hopefully change soon.

The census is a snap shot of where everyone was on 04012010. But people don't sit still. They move around. Some of the questions are designed to sort out if some one was moving during the time frame of 04012010. Some of the questions are to sort out people who have second homes, (snowbirds) to make sure they are not counted twice or not missed. Also, the forms sort out who doesn't get counted, such as people from other countries who just happened to be at that particular house on 04012010. Guess what? They won't be counted, but a form does get filled out to sort all that out and document it.
American is not a race. Do you not know that? They will of course know that you are white when you do that because it is only you teabaggers that are so offended by a CONSTITUTIONAL REQUIREMENT!!
