Let the Bribes Begin: Obama Offering Judgeships to Secure Health Care Votes

Yesterday, The Weekly Standard reported that President Obama hosted 10 Democrat House members at the White House last night:
Tonight, Barack Obama will host ten House Democrats who voted against the health care bill in November at the White House; he’s obviously trying to persuade them to switch their votes to yes. One of the ten is Jim Matheson of Utah. The White House just sent out a press release announcing that today President Obama nominated Matheson’s brother Scott M. Matheson, Jr. to the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit.
Apparently, Obama thinks that Matheson’s brother is qualified to become a federal judge:
“Scott Matheson is a distinguished candidate for the Tenth Circuit court,” President Obama said. “Both his legal and academic credentials are impressive and his commitment to judicial integrity is unwavering. I am honored to nominate this lifelong Utahn to the federal bench.”
Matheson’s background reads:
Scott M. Matheson currently holds the Hugh B. Brown Presidential Endowed Chair at the S.J. Quinney College of Law, University of Utah, where he has been a member of the faculty since 1985. He served as Dean of the Law School from 1998 to 2006. He also taught First Amendment Law at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government from 1989 to 1990.
While on public service leave from the University of Utah from 1993 to 1997, Matheson served as United States Attorney for the District of Utah. In 2007, he was appointed by Governor Jon Huntsman to chair the Utah Mine Safety Commission. He also worked as a Deputy County Attorney for Salt Lake County from 1988 to 1989. Prior to joining the University faculty, Matheson was an associate attorney from 1981 to 1985 at Williams & Connolly LLP in Washington, D.C.
Matheson was born and raised in Utah and is a sixth generation Utahn. He received an A.B. from Stanford University in 1975, an M.A. from Oxford University, where he was a Rhodes Scholar, and a J.D. from Yale Law School in 1980.
Seems that Matheson is hurdling a few career steps to become a judge. Wonder how his brother will vote now. After all, he did vote “no” the first time around on health care and the House is just not that fond of the Senate bill.

My God, this is open blatant in our faces corruption! These people are utterly shameless. Do they think we are so stupid, do they think we don't see? When will someone in power call this crap out? Isn't this crap illegal? Isn't there some law which could be used to stop this and all the corruption going on? Or are we the people going to have to start making citizen arrests?

Did he use croynism like Delahunt did to put a killer back on the street to kill some more? I'd like to know about some of the cases this guy worked on. He is clearly using croynism now. Seeing as Matheson apparently doesn't see any conflict of interest here where else in this guys career has he accepted graff?

When you have nearly the entire media complex willing to cover for you, there's really no need to hide things much. They literally have thousands of "reporters" who will spin this as no big deal.
I could have sworn he spent 5 minutes of his speech yesterday complaining about the political games and how he was removing things from the bill that were based on swaying congressional votes.

Kinda sorta, but not really…Blago got busted for taking graff (pay-to-play) in making an appointment to replace Barry's Senate seat. This Matheson deal, is just that. A deal to get a yes vote in the house, in exchange for a family appointment. Neither are prudent, nor legal to some degree.
An appelate judge appointment is an F-ing valuable thing.
Is there any chance this doesn't mean he agreed to be bribed in advance? Is there any chance that when the hearing comes up we will have him on the stand, and he'll tell the truth of why the timing is suspicious?
Clearly, the democratic congress is following Obama off the cliff because they believe they will be rewarded with cushy appointed positions in the future should they lose their seats. We need to remove ALL appointments like this to ensure no democratic congress can be bought, and impeach this judge if he wins approval.
To drain this swamp, cut all federal government pay and eliminate all political appointments. And heck, that's also the correct answer to reduce the debt, as well as the correct answer for allowing the private sector to thrive. Cut half the pay, half the benefits, and half the jobs.

We need to cut congressional pay and remove the Cadillac healthcare benefits from the compensation package. If we are to be expected to tolerate socialized medicine then these scumbags should lead the way.
We should also treat any house or senate member that gets voted out of office as having been FIRED! and should mean the end the retirement pay and health benefits.
We also need to limit the congressional session to no more than 6 months and require that the remaining 6 months are spent talking to constituents and actually listening to what WE want done.
I think that the Jersey recall petition is a good start to draining this swamp and should be repeated in every state.

I'm sure Jim Matheson believes his brother deserves such a position, but talk about an unexpected "present". I'd like to believe that Jim did something to tick of POTUS enough that he heavy-handedly announced Scott's appointment prior to actually speaking with Jim. But maybe not. Cities, counties and states that haven't been very kind to illegal immigrants over the years are suddenly dusting off their welcome mats. With the 2010 census about to get under way, those undocumented residents will be worth a lot of money for the next few weeks.
Jurisdictions across the country are reaching out to illegal immigrant communities, some of which are reluctant to participate, in an effort to convince them that filling out the census form is safe and that the information they provide won't be used against them.
Counting every last resident is vital for these districts, because the census numbers will be used to determine funding as well as legislative districts. The more people an area has, the more money it is eligible for, and the more representation it can get in Congress — which usually means even more money.
"It helps us build our hospitals, schools, parks, libraries," said Michael Nowakowski, vice mayor of the city of Phoenix and the point person for the census on the City Council.
But cities like Phoenix have a major trust gap to close. Phoenix is in the heart of Arizona's Maricopa County, where Sheriff Joe Arpaio is known nationwide for cracking down on illegal immigrants.
Nowakowski acknowledged that this has created some problems.
"It's been really challenging for us. … The fear level's very high," he said.
To counteract that, the city's specially formed census committee is reaching out to illegal immigrant communities, through Spanish-language media and other avenues, to assure them they won't be locked up or deported based on census information they provide.
In Phoenix, officials estimate every resident counted is worth about $400 in government funding.
According to the Census Bureau, the information collected over the next few weeks will help determine where more than $400 billion in federal funding goes every year to projects like schools, senior centers, bridges and hospitals.
On the East Coast, Virginia officials are grappling with the same suspicions.
"In some cases, they're being told, don't cooperate," said Bill Vaughan, county demographer for Prince William County.
Prince William, which gained widespread attention in 2007 for its aggressive crackdown on illegal immigrants, now is reaching out to all groups — including undocumented residents — through literature in the schools and public education events at places like shopping centers, Vaughan said.
"Our ability to provide services counts on as complete a count as we can get," he said, expressing optimism that a large number of people will cooperate. "Even though we did have a fairly controversial initiative, I think most people will see … the advantages for this county, for the census."
Nearby Fairfax County, Va., which is participating in a program that checks inmate fingerprints against an immigration database to flag and deport law-breaking illegals, is making the same argument.
"Our population is what drives our ability to attract transportation and education, human services funding to the area and it is also what we base our redistricting on," said Sharon Bulova, chairwoman of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, though she stressed that Fairfax does not have a campaign targeted specifically at illegal immigrants.
She said every counted resident is worth about $1,000 to the county.
But some argue that courting illegal immigrants for the census is tantamount to juking the stats and should not be done.
William Gheen, president of the Americans for Legal Immigration PAC (ALIPAC), said that counting undocumented residents for the purposes of the census "undermines" the electoral process — he said on that basis, immigrant-heavy places like Southern California could qualify for far more funding and representation than immigrant-light places like Maine.
"It is intrinsically unfair and abusive to American citizens," Gheen said. He said Congress should eventually exclude all data from illegal immigrants for funding and apportionment decisions and allow it to be used instead for enforcement. Plus, he said, counting illegal immigrants in the census is part of a "de facto amnesty" policy.
Counting illegal immigrants, and everyone else, as part of the census is nothing new. A head count every 10 years is required by the Constitution, and it is supposed to include every man, woman and child in the country, irrespective of nationality or citizenship. The Census Bureau is prohibited by law from divulging personal information.

Why is anyone surprised about this. The entire health care process has been filled with bribes and payoffs. If this bill was actually as good as Obama, Pelosi and Reid are trying to claim most would have quickly jumped on board. This is Chicago politics at its finest. now, now… to be fair, Scott Matheson, Jr. is a LOT more qualified to be a judge than BHO is to be POTUS.
Let's look at Judge Michael McConnell– the judge Matheson is replacing. McConnell was nominated by President George Bush in 2001– and he never sat on the bench as a Judge. McConnell's background is very similar to Scott Matheson– even down to the law school that employed them before they were nominated. After serving as a appellate judge for just a few years, McConnell's name was batted around as a possible Supreme Court Justice. Matheson and McConnell's experience pre-judgeship look very similar– except one thing, their politics.
Maybe I am missing the point but look at the statement of:
"I am honored to nominate this lifelong Utahn to the federal bench"
Then look at Work experience:
Kennedy School of Government from 1989 to 1990
And
Williams & Connolly LLP in Washington, D.C.
These seem like a long commute as a "lifelong Utahn"

I attend law school where Matheson Teaches and his brother is my representative. I'll tell you this much, as far as judges go it's NEVER the most qualified person nominated. It's always political back-scratching. The State Court House in Salt Lake City is the Scott Matheson (Sr.) court house. Their family has contributed to the well being of this state for decades. Jim Matheson is an old school democrat and basically a republican. Mitt Romney is more democrat than Jim Matheson.
Is this political posturing from Obama? Of course it is, no one is denying that. However, if Jim changes his vote I can guarantee right now that he won't be reelected. I know it, his other constituents know it and most importantly HE knows it.
Matheson won't soil his family's name for a failing health care bill, he's much too smart for that. I like the man, I support the man and I voted and will continue to vote for the man as long as he represents us in the manner he has previously.

The Matheson family has a very strong and positive reputation. There has never been a whiff of scandal about Scott, Jim or their father, who was an excellent governor. I find it very unfortunate that Obama has besmirched the reputation of these good men.
