Obama Signs Patriot Act Extension: MSM and the Left Silent

The reauthorization did NOT include any reforms to the current Patriot Act–an odd display of agreement and submission to Bush-era policy–even though the Democrats had the numbers to reform the Act. The continuance of the current Patriot Act signals that Democrats are fearful of further controversary in light of American’s distrust and poor approval ratings of the Democrat-controlled Congress. From the Hill:
The House approved the bill 315-97 on Thursday, a day after the extension passed the Senate.
The provisions, including roving wiretaps, records access and tracking terror suspects not affiliated with any group, were set to expire on Sunday. Democrats opposing the extension were unable to add desired civil-liberties protections.
The Patriot Act was first passed by Congress after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks as a defense mechanism against terrorists.
The House and the Senate, behind the scenes of the healthcare fervor, quietly passed this bill with little oppostion and outrage. Democrats could have modified the Patriot Act, but didn’t.
Apparently without Bush, the Patriot Act is no longer Orwellian as Michael Moore would have it and the ACLU is now quietly voicing its differences. Even Obama criticized the Act’s compromise in 2006, but had no issue, as President, signing the identical Act he wanted reforms on. In 2006, Obama stated on the Senate floor:
So, I will be supporting the Patriot Act compromise. But I urge my colleagues to continue working on ways to improve the civil liberties protections in the Patriot Act after it is reauthorized.
The Democrats had the numbers to make changes, but another civil war would have ensued. In addition, it appears that when these controversial legislative pieces are passed by the Democrats, it makes it all better. No more outrage from the MSM and the far-left, because the rules of war and engagement are clearly different because, you know, the Democrats are in charge.

When this bill first came out I thought, "so what let them listen to my phone calls. I got nothing to hide." Well I still don't have anything to hide but I'm not quite as comfortable in that position anymore. I guess it's a trust thing. For some reason I just don't trust this government anymore.
If you buy tickets to their movies, their DVDs, their concert tickets, their CD's, their books or subscribe to their magazines and "news"papers then you are funding them.

The coming political tsunami, here's why:
By the time the tsunami hit Hawaii today it was pretty tame. But there is a huge political tsunami that is headed to Washington, and it is expected to hit in early November of this year. Rasmussen's latest chart (check his website), which shows Mac Daddy's (Dis)Approval Index hitting an all-time low for the second time, is the evidence for my projected tsunami.
Rasmussen's latest chart makes it clear that more and more people strongly disapprove with what MD is doing, at the same time that fewer and fewer strong approve. MD and the Dems think the reason for this is that they haven't done enough to advance the liberal agenda, but for any objective observer, I think it's clear that they have tried to do way too much.
The sudden birth of the Tea Party movement about a year ago was like the first of a swarm of earthquakes that have since generated bigger and bigger aftershocks. The Massachusetts election of Scott Brown last month was not only a major aftershock, but it eclipsed all of the prior ones. Just two days ago was the healthcare reform summit, another major aftershock–MD and his liberal team stunk the place up. The tsunami waves have been set in motion, and they are traveling all around the 50 states, gathering momentum and amplification as the errors of Washington collide with political topography of the country.
Are there enough Democrats really willing to sacrifice everything in order to engineer a government takeover of almost one-fifth of the economy? Rahming it through via reconciliation is surely a no-win situation. The public doesn't support the package at all, and any attempt to force it through, especially if more behind-the-scenes wheeling and dealing is necessary to accomplish it, will only sour the public even more. I don't see Nancy Pelosi getting the votes. And the harder she tries, the worse it's going to be. And even if the bill does somehow pass, it is so riddled with fatal flaws that it is unlikely to ever be implemented.
So my sense is that Dems will be scurrying for high ground like cockroaches in a flooded house in the months to come, just as the residents of Hawaii evacuated the shoreline this morning in advance of the tsunami's arrival. Gridlock will be the likely result, and that's a very good thing at this point.
The true path to high ground lies in radically scaling back the ambitions of Washington lawmakers. Otherwise, they are going to be swamped. Mark Steyn, quoted below, has a good analogy for all this:
"While Obama was making his latest pitch for a brand new, even more unsustainable entitlement at the health care "summit," thousands of Greeks took to the streets to riot. An enterprising cable network might have shown the two scenes on a continuous split-screen – because they're part of the same story. It's just that Greece is a little further along in the plot: They're at the point where the canoe is about to plunge over the falls. America is further upstream and can still pull for shore, but has decided, instead, that what it needs to do is catch up with the Greek canoe.
Think of Greece as California: Every year an irresponsible and corrupt bureaucracy awards itself higher pay and better benefits paid for by an ever-shrinking wealth-generating class. In Greece, they've run out Greeks, so they'll stick it to the Germans… in America, Obama, Pelosi and Reid are saying we need to paddle faster to catch up with the Greeks and Germans. What could go wrong?
We need to stop the runaway growth of government, entitlement programs, wealth redistribution, transfer payments and taxes, and we need to send politicians to Washington who understand this. I think this can happen, and that's one reason why I remain optimistic. The coming political tsunami is going to wash away a lot of the deadwood and corruption in Washington, and it's going to leave in its place a new generation of politicians who understand that the best thing for the country is to just leave the people alone."

Unfortunately what he added to the Patriot Act by executive order, expanded warrantless wiretap authority, goes far beyond what congress originally approved of in 2002…
The CIA, FBI and DHS can now bypass the FISA courts completely and listen in to your phone calls, read your emails, track your cellphone and open your bank or medical records at will…
All it requires now is the president or vice president's "verbal approval" and a claim of executive privilege in the interest of "national security" to do it to whomever they like or "dislike" as the case may well be…

I've been so sceptical of the Flight 253 after reading Kurt Haskell's account of a "sharp dressed man" helping the underwear dude on the plane in Amsterdam, all the while this Patriot Act was set to expire. Then right on down to Jasper flying over the seats to capture him, I'm so thinking that it all was a total set up. I'm no usually like this, it just seems too unbelievable .

Its a little of topic but i found its about the health care bill you mentioned. You say that something like 60 percent of the population is against the bill. I had a troll on this website tell me yesterday that if we just did not count the republicans and some of the more conservative independants than a majority wanted health care. Thats the liberal way. When MSM or democrats talk about the 52 percent of the voters (alive and dead) who voted for obama it is a overwhelming mandate for change and utter dismissal of president Bush..
But when MSM or democrats talk about the 54 percent of voters (alive) who do not want a health care bill it is an insignificant amount who just dont know what they are protesting against and will love health care once they pass it.

In 2006, Obama wanted changes to the Patriot Act, but this DEMOCRAT Congress did not change the Act at all. He still signed it. Why? Thought he wanted changes to it. I think you're right – and whenever I start getting concerned about the timelines, I just remember:
1. Obamascare only starts the taxes in 2011 – the actual government beaurocracies don't start until 2016 or so… There's time to repeal them – even if takes until 2013. In the meantime, the taxes collected are either going to be wasted by the Ds (who will be called out by the Rs for not putting that info in lockboxes) or can be put against the debt by the Rs who should be in control of Congress by then.
2. What can be passed by reconciliation can be repealed by reconciliation.
3. No-one in their right mind is really expecting any economic recovery until at least Nov 2012 anyway.
4. At the rate the Ds are increasing taxes, there should be lots of $$$ available to put against the debt come 2013 and lots of 'brand-new' government programs that we can clearly eliminate to free more $$$.
5. Who knows ? – by 2013, we should have weeded a lot of the non-performing middle-management out of our larger companies and most of the union deadwood out of the workforce. Perhaps by then recovery can move forward without the (by then – discredited) unions getting in the way of productivity and profits. (Hint Profits are good – they form the basis of taxes on industry and reasons hire more people).
It's what keeps me sane in Obummer-land.
