Republicans Call Out Democrats on Bill Provision to Punish, Jail CIA Agents

The Hill reports a major win for Republicans and the CIA on a Democrat ambush on the agency and its agents. The Democrat sneak-attack unfolded as the healthcare summit took the national stage, but the GOP was watching.
Democrats inserted an 11-page addition into the bill late Wednesday night as the House Rules Committee considered the legislation.
The provision, previously not vetted in committee, applied to “any officer or employee of the intelligence community” who during interrogations engages in beatings, infliction of pain or forced sexual acts. The bill said the acts covered by the provision would include inducing hypothermia, conducting mock executions or “depriving the [detainee] of necessary food, water, sleep, or medical care.”
The language gave Congress the discretion to determine what the terms mean, and it would have imposed punishments of up to 15 years in prison, and in some cases, life sentences if a detainee died as a result of the interrogation.
Rep. Pete Hoesktra (R-MI) called out the Democrats:
“This will fundamentally change the nature of the intelligence community by creating a criminal statute governing interrogations,” said Rep. Pete Hoesktra (R-Mich.). [This] had appeared “out of nowhere” in a manager’s amendment.
“Would someone on the other side please explain the rationale behind this and why the majority was unwilling to have hearings on this issue?” he said.
“Republicans brought this to the attention of the American people, who were rightly outraged that Democrats would try to target those we ask to serve in harm’s way and with a unified push we were successful in getting them to pull the bill,” Hoekstra said in a statement. “The annual intelligence bill should be about protecting and defending our nation, not targeting those we ask to do that deed and giving greater protections to terrorists.”
The language was pulled from the bill. However, this latest development makes you want to ask, “Who’s side are the Democrats on?” And the next question is, “How can the CIA recruit exceptional talent and additional agents under these conditions and threats?” Neither one, though, is rhetorical.

Dear Sir/Ma’am:
In the past six months I have witnessed various attacks on what makes up a thin and fragile line between order and chaos in a free society; from the Central Intelligence Agency to a local Massachusetts police officer. This must stop. The men and women of these agencies and services step forward, and serve this country in various forms without regard to their personal or economic well being; they do it because they possess an ember that provokes in them a desire to protect the American public, and by extension our way of life, that is, freedom. In short they have the “right stuff” and they prove it every day they infiltrate dangerous organizations hell bent on horror, or keep a once idiotic teenager, like yours truly once was, from violating the vehicle and traffic law. I think it is high time for a little reminder of what these men and women endure to get where they are to do their jobs, and maybe in doing this all of you who are in charge will stop dumping on all of them.
In order to become and remain a CIA agent one must continually lie to their family and friends, pass a vigorous background check, endure a training program that is psychologically as well as physically grueling, all the while living under a microscope for months where every emanation is recorded, reviewed, and discussed ad nauseam with people you have never met. Assuming one makes it to graduation, the new agents are then given assignments all over the globe in an effort to widen our intelligence net; to enable all of you to make wise choices as to how to react to the challenges this nation is, and will face. As far as a personal life or marriages, rarely do they endure, and children are difficult to have if you and your spouse are separated by continents for months on end. The penalty for detection in many of these regions is an excruciatingly painful death; the best these captured agents can hope for is to die while being tortured. You can bet Kim Jung Whack Job is not following the United States Army Field Manual.
In order to become a police officer and remain one, one must have and continue to live on the right side of the law and pass psychological testing. They must train for dangerous and unpredictable situations that they will most likely face alone. The men and women of the thousands of police departments risk their lives to enforce the law while simultaneously respecting the constitutional rights of citizens so that the law abiding can live freely. Every day hundreds of thousands of police officers kiss their wives and children goodbye; put on twenty to forty pounds of gear including a loaded weapon, and earnestly set forth to enforce the law and protect the public, sometimes even protecting a citizen from his or her own stupidity; all the while knowing that for a handful of officers this will be the last day they every see their children, wife or husband on this earth. Recently a Massachusetts police officer was dispatched to respond to an alleged break-in in progress; this particular officer, arrived on the scene; proceeded in accordance with his training; to secure, apprehend potential suspects, and to every extent possible maintain the scene for a potential prosecution of as yet undetermined suspects – and he was viciously attacked for it.
How can all of you expect that we will attract and retain the best individuals this nation has to offer if you attack them? In the recent past Speaker Pelosi accused the CIA of lying or President Obama last week automatically assumed a police officer is acting “stupidly” after declaring he did not know the facts. President Clinton spent his terms in office declaring a world at peace and cashed the peace dividend on top of the CIA and the defense of this nation; that brought us the loss of lives on September 11, 2001; decimated our economy and brought us a war that has no end because we have not yet begun ramping up to attack the wider enemy; an enemy who you can all bet will attack us again. All of you at a bare minimum would serve this nation far better if you supported, and when ever possible, celebrated the efforts of all of these men and women in their efforts to do their vital jobs. As far as doing your jobs; any government that is accruing a Seven Billion Two Hundred Million dollar debt ($7,200,000,000) every twenty-four hours against a rapidly shrinking economy, while contemplating spending hundreds of billions of dollars on everything from taking over the health system to “cash for clunkers” is clearly not doing its job.

Reyes was appointed Chairman of the Intelligence Committee by 'you know who', specifically because of his animosity toward the CIA. Their thoughts were "who better to blacken eye of the CIA than the Intelligence Committee chairman himself." It was not debated in the house, or even in committee. Doing so would jeorpardize it's passage. Better to try and sneak it through while we're pre-occupied with the health care farce. (That's their way). Fortunately, Republicans finally woke the hell up and are reading EVERY bill that is written, and caught this scumbag's feeble attempt at weakening our security. We Texans are now done with this guy, too.

Not only was this proposed bill dubiously vague, it also called for retroactive prosecution (read:persecution) of ANY AND ALL acts that may have been "perpetrated" in the past and had been exonified – this would have been entirely illegal.
Remember, it only takes one brave general to arrest Mr. Obama and members of his administration for conduct unbecoming and deriliction of duty; I hope for such a brave individual to step forward every day…before our freedoms are completely stripped and this nation is destroyed from the inside out.
There are those Democratic politicians who use the protections of our democracy, while has absolutely no guts to defend it. Maybe these politicians should be "sensitized" by having them watch the beheading of journalsits, readily available on the web, or picking up the body parts of victims from the World Trade Center, or the splattered bodies of bomb victims all over the world. Better yet, they should be placed directly on the front lines of this jihadist war, and experience the horror of terrorism exploding around them. Maybe then a few of them, or a lot of them will die. Based on your surname and being from Texas, I am most ashamedly confident that you are a Mexican. As a veteran and American of Mexican descent, I want you to know how embarrassing it for me to say that our ancestors are one and the same. My only hope is that you were at least born in Mexico and not in the country that you despise so much. Please let me have at least that little consolation. You have here in the United States infinitely much more than you could have ever attained anywhere else.
I closing, iwant you to know that I have no regrets having raised my sons to be willing to defend our country in order that your children will be able to, like you, take full advantage of all that America has to offer. Obama's dithering and ineptness in Afghanistan and in dealing with Iran showed such weakness, it might have invited terrorists and foreign Governments to challenge U.S. global interests, perhaps even attack America. Weakening American security, the current Administration appears to have for political purposes placated its left-wing roots by attacking the CIA’s interrogation of terrorists, undermining the agency’s ability to stop terrorist attacks. Until now, Americans have never been faced with both the prospect of attacks from terrorists, foreign and domestic while concurrently having to rely on a U.S. Government that appears at the top inherently weak.

I am 77 years old – I served my country in the U.S. Army Airborne for 8 years. My generation was proud to serve this great country. We didn't laugh when we were asked to say the Pledge of Allegiance, it was a sacred privrilege to recite this pledge – many of my friends gave their lives to protect this priviledge.

That sounds familiar. I started going to Juarez as a teenager to drink -like all West Texas/Southern New Mexico teens "with a pink carnation and a pickup truck" (American Pie Don McLean 1972 (?) – and I never really "relaxed" in Juarez. I've spent lots of time there and always keep my head on a subtle swivel, not drink too much and be vigilant.
We used to go to Cancun alot, but we've been avoiding Mexico for a few years now.

Come on Jac, not a valid comparison. Nazi Germany was all about pacifying the populus, not doing overseas intelligence work. The Nazis/German had terrible foreign intelligence. WE don't and we WON'T as long as stupid laws like these are stripped like today.
These CIA agents are collecting vital information from terrorists caught in action overseas. The Nazi intelligence apparatus was pointed totally inward, policing itself and the citizenry against internal threats. The Gestapo evolved from state (as in regional) police forces ferreting out dissent. Nobody here is worried about the CIA turning on private citizens – most of us are armed – something the Nazi's FIXED by disarming the country and muzzeling and making docile the SA.
What you are afraid of is WHY the pigs a GITMO belong at GITMO – they are non-citizens, captured in forign lands on foreign battlefields. The have no business in U.S. courtrooms or on U.S. soil.
You should be more concerned about the FBI, they are primarily dometic (but do sortie outside the country)

This shows that the Dems remain clueless about the damage which they are doing to intelligence operations, and thereby to our national security. Even though this particular measure was defeated, it demonstrates to anybody in the intelligence community that these jerks are still out to get them for political gain. Pretty motivating, eh?
Once again, the damage isn't just that CIA officers will go into CYA mode. It is that potential sources, who would perhaps have to risk their lives to help us learn what some of our worst enemies are planning, will not trust us. Similarly, foreign intelligence services will be very nervous about sharing vital intelligence with us because of the risk that politicians with an election year agenda here will expose their sources and methods.
Remember, they want you to be going nuts and protesting what they are doing – rather than actually getting organized to defeat them in November. Don't fall for it. Channel your frustration into the hard work to turn out the vote in record numbers against these people.
Note that the Texas primary is March 2. Now is the time to help turn out the Republicans in record numbers in every district with a D incumbent, and get solid conservatives through the primary process so that voters have a good choice in November. Let every "blue dog" or Dem know that their days in power are numbered.
Let them pull your toenails out by the roots, stuff your scrotum in a light socket, and rip the skin off your tounge and see how quickly you start talking. Of course it works. Why do you think much of the rest of the world uses it? May not be right but it sure as heck works.

I think it even goes farther than her wanting revenge on the CIA, I think she wants to punish the

Due to his being from Tx I always paid attention when he turned up on C Span. I never saw any sign
he was vindictive like some of the congressmen, but I quit watching 2 yrs ago because of all the Bush-
bashing.
