Sen. Harkin Contradicts Obama, Says Final Healthcare Deal Done BEFORE the MA Election
by SusanAnne HillerThe Hill is reporting that Senator Tom Harkin, chairman of the Senate Health Committee, stated that negotiators from the White House, Senate and House reached a final deal on healthcare reform days before Scott Brown’s win in Massachusetts.
From the article:
Labor leaders had announced an agreement with White House and congressional representatives over an excise tax on high-cost insurance plans on the Thursday before the special election.
Harkin said “we had an agreement, with the House, the White House and the Senate. We sent it to [the Congressional Budget Office] to get scored and then Tuesday happened and we didn’t get it back.” He said negotiators had an agreement in hand on Friday, Jan. 15.
Harkin made clear that negotiators had reached a final deal on the entire bill, not just the excise plans, which had been reported the previous day, Jan. 14.
Harkin said the deal covered the prescription-drug “donut hole,” the level of federal insurance subsidies, national insurance exchanges and federal Medicaid assistance to states.
This cannot be right.
If Harkin is telling the truth, then that would mean President Obama is lying because at the GOP retreat, Obama stated that there were some “stray cats and dogs” in the legislation. This quote from Obama at the retreat:
“The last thing I will say, though — let me say this about health care and the health care debate, because I think it also bears on a whole lot of other issues. If you look at the package that we’ve presented — and there’s some stray cats and dogs that got in there that we were eliminating, we were in the process of eliminating. For example, we said from the start that it was going to be important for us to be consistent in saying to people if you can have your — if you want to keep the health insurance you got, you can keep it, that you’re not going to have anybody getting in between you and your doctor in your decision making. And I think that some of the provisions that got snuck in might have violated that pledge.”
So which is it? Was the health bill done as Harkin states? Or, were Obama and congressional leaders still trying to capture those stray cats and dogs? If the healthcare bill was sent to the CBO as Harkin confirms, then where’s the score? Was it withdrawn from the CBO due to the MA election?
These are just some of the questions that we will follow up.
Someone is clearly lying, stretching the truth, pandering to the GOP, whatever you want to call it. However, it appears that the White House was trying to jam through the healthcare bill before the MA election, but the CBO could not score it fast enough.
Let’s just hope the Republicans in Congress see the same tom-foolery that the American people see.

I don't think Obama wants the health care bill to actually reach him. He is only interested in getting the credit for trying and then demonizing the people who opposed it. It is kind of like the war on poverty. If you solve the problem of poverty then you might reduce the number of people with their hands out. You do that and you will lose votes for the poeple redistributing the wealth. Nelson said he never asked for the "Cornhusker Kickback", that it was just there with the language he wanted on abortion. Was this an attempt by Rahm to sabotage the bill? Obama's little "Oh S#!t, I never thought it would get this far" moment when he realized to keep a campaign promise to not increase the deficit would mean vetoing the bill.

The Senate held its key
procedural vote at 1 in the
morning,
and then provided a lump of
coal in our stockings by forcing
full passage of its bill on
Christmas Eve.

consideration of all but one
amendment not offered by
leadership itself –
forbidding debate on more
than 150 of them –
then provided just 24 hours
for members to study the
bill’s final text.
The Senate leadership inserted
so many tawdry last-minute
items that analysts are still
finding jokers in the deck
11 days later.

All these shenanigans have
driven approval for the
government health care bills
even lower in public polls than
the strong majorities that already
opposed them a month ago.
Yet that hasn’t fazed
congressional leaders.
Now comes word from multiple
sources that not only will Congress
refuse to televise the usual
Conference Committee to reconcile
the two chambers’ versions
of the bill,
but it won’t allow a formal
conference at all.
Instead, a chosen few negotiators
will concoct the final version
out of sight,
without formal rules governing
the process and without a single
Republican at the table.
If congressional leaders do
not abide this simple request,
Republicans should bring the
whole Senate to a halt. Senate
rules provide for so many
procedural obstacles,
if a determined minority wants
to exercise them, that the entire
body could be tied up in knots
for weeks on end.
In the name of open and
accountable government,
that’s what senators should
do if the public interest
continues to be trampled.

Plenty of lies circulate congress. I don't care because even if they passed healthcare it wouldn't work because the $$ isn't there. Just like if healthcare stays status quo, it won't work, because free market principles aren't guiding the system, but rather a convuluded mixed system created by both parties that have special interests.
The party days are over in congress, the baby boomer generation has brought the U.S. to its knees.

I'm all for adressing the possible elimination of the departments you listed Jim. However, the defense budget is one of the largest pieces of the pie and would be an easy place to start.
You forgot to mention the IRS, that one would be easy to eliminate, and also the Social Security Administration.
You should care because if the money is not there, then neither is your healthcare– rationing care to save costs.
It's time to END CHIPS, END MEDICAID, and police Medicare for fraud. Those who have paid less than $100,000 in taxes paid in (life time) gets first tier Medicare care, those who paid in less than that get econocare. Veterans are a vastly different class. The earned their service connected care by, literally, putting their butts on the line for the rest. No one else has extended that levvel of "payment."
No other health care should be extended to people in this country, no well-baby care for illegals, no well-care or follow-ups for illegals. Stabilize them, and then send them home.
