Democrats Officially Kill Successful DC Voucher Program

This is big government at its finest hour. The Democrats have officially killed a successful private school voucher program banishing more than 3,300 low-income children back to the DC schools they so desperately wanted to escape. The Heartland Institute reports:
The leaders of D.C.’s school choice movement, Kevin P. Chavous (former D.C. Councilman) and Virginia Walden Ford (executive director of D.C. Parents for School Choice), today issued the following statement:
“House and Senate Appropriators this week ignored the wishes of D.C.’s mayor, D.C.’s public schools chancellor, a majority of D.C.’s city council, and more than 70 percent of D.C. residents and have mandated the slow death of the D.C. Opportunity Scholarship Program. This successful school voucher program—for D.C.’s poorest families—has allowed more than 3,300 children to attend the best schools they have ever known.
The decision to end the program, a decision buried in a thousand-page spending bill and announced right before the holidays, destroys the hopes and dreams of thousands of D.C. families. Parents and children have rallied countless times over the past year in support of reauthorization and in favor of strengthening the OSP.
Yet, despite the clearly positive results and the proven success of this program, Sen. Dick Durbin, Rep. Jose Serrano, Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton, and Secretary Arne Duncan worked together to kill the OSP. Funding the program only for existing children shrinks the program each year, compromises the federal evaluation of the program, denies entry to the siblings of existing participants, and punishes those children waiting in line by sentencing them to failing and often unsafe schools.

The Democrats have effectively ended the voucher program. Obama only extended it into the 2009-2010 school year. He could have done more. He didn’t. Underpriveleged children–whom the Democrats oppress “protect” from the greed and injustices of the Right had a chance to gain the social justice and fairness Obama continuously touts in his speeches.
The Democrats have spent trillions of our tax dollars so carelessly with failed stimulus pork payouts, cash for clunkers, auto bailouts, bank bailouts, and additional Fannie and Freddie bailouts, you would think they could spare an extra $50 million over five years to continue to educate poor children–especially minority children.
For the record, it was the Republicans in 2004 who started the voucher program and Republican Senator John Ensign (R-NV) who introduced an amendment to the omnibus appropriations bill to extend the voucher program. Democrats voted down the amendment 50-39.
Ensign said in a statement:
“In drafting this bill, Democrats put their political agenda ahead of educating our children. As a result, students who chose to leave a failing school and attend a better, safer school will have to return to the school they decided to leave. This is such a tragic situation.”
I can only deduce that the product of the Democrats’ social justice mantra is to give the poor enough money to buy the basic necessities, including food and clothes, but not empower or provide them the means–starting with education–to become so much more than a welfare dependent or government volunteer.

You have to love the hypocrisy of the Left. If it were the Right cutting off vouchers, they would be screaming injustice, unfairness, bigotry, oppression from the rooftops. So – exactly where are the intrepid GOPers on this issue. Both of these parties need to dive into their hole and pull in the dirt to cover themselves up. Representative Govt is a thing of the past. It is time for Americans to take back their government. This is only further proof.
Unbelievable – I thought the bleeding heart liberals were supposed to be helping underprivileged families. Isn't that what 40 years of the Great Society was? Trillions of dollars down the drain and the poor are still where they were in the 60's. Vouchers are the way to improve the chances for these kids.
Of course, when the poor aren't poor they won't need the CORRUPTOCRATS any longer. Go figure.
Pretty sad when the usual LIBS and Democrats trash, destroy and otherwise mandate the failure of a very successful education program for minorities. This charter program provided an intense and fulfilling educational standard for poor families that they would otherwise never be able to provide. And now this…typical Obama and his influence. Payoff for the unions as well. So why kill it? Pretty simple when you just sit and think about it.
These students would grow up within the charter system and LEARN THAT IT WAS PRIVATE ENTERPRISE that contributed to their success…NOT the corrupted public school system. Now I wonder why OBAMA's kids are not in public schools, mmmmMMMMM ! Instead they attend the Sidwell Academy. And these poor disadvantaged families deserve less than their incompetent leader ? Apparently so ! When are you minoritites going to wake up ?

Any teacher that joins a union is not fit to teach students. The moment you join a union, the interests of the union come before the interests of the students. Teachers should care about their students more than they care about their benefit package.

I like your idea, except for the fact that if the GOP did this, the Dims would find a way to say it was their idea and would use it to run on in the next election. Remember when Churches and civic groups, like the Knights of Columbus would do these things. There really weren't that many scholarships. Leading towards not actually requiring an outrageous amount of fundraising. Make the one rule "We refuse to discriminate – this is solely based on need." In DC, it won't make much practical difference. If done with community assistance (Hey, come help fundraise for -your-kids-) there's actually the possibility of lifting some blinders in here.

I see that most, if not all of these comments agree how screwed up government programs are run. So we are simply "preaching to the choir" . What we need to do is preach to the heathens. That means we should go to the lib websites and post our same comments on their sites. A simple cut and paste works great. Post it here or on some other conservative site then cut/paste to a liberal site. We need to keep our comments short, plain and truthful. No name calling. I work within the California public school system and I can tell you that our Federal government's ultimate goal is to have the future of this country be UNEDUCATED. It is much easier to control the masses if they are stupid! Why else would the federal government require schools to fulfill unattainable mandates that cost millions of dollars?????? STAR testing is just one example of governemnt waste within our schools….that unintentionally take away instructional time from students!

She later told WaPo – “Education reform in America or in the District will not be achieved by giving a few children a choice.” BAEO noted at the time that her own kids attended the Georgetown Day Private School and also noted their feeling betrayed! Jindal (R) APPROVED VOUCHERS and the schools are doing well. A few other States with (R) governors, also SUPPORT VOUCHERS. Strickland (D) tried to CUT VOUCHERS but pro-school choice groups got them refunded. When Obama (D) CUT VOUCHERS, BAEO, with other pro-school choice groups did a poll, there was overwhelming support. Despite massive support; despite thousands protesting at DC; despite 99-100% of kids college bound; despite it being cost-effective; Obama turned a deaf ear. The Dem's consistently use and abuse minorities, minorities in turn feel betrayed, yet they persist in voting for their abusers. There's a psych ailment in there somewhere.

The democrats have always been the party of prejudice. Follow their legacy from Lincoln until now. From Jim Crow, to killing the anti-lynching bill of 1933, to segregation to Planned Parenthood (State sponsored race control) the democrats have either stood in the way of equality or benefit from dividing Americans by group. During the "New Deal" the dems discovered that they could buy block votes with the redistribution of other people's money. In order for the dems to succeed, they must keep their block voters down and dependent on subsidy. Upwardly mobile Americans vote for liberty and independence. Most of the "firsts" for black Americans and women were made by the republican party. Don't attack me, attack the facts. Facts are stubborn things. The democrats have killed incentive and prosperity since they gave us the Federal Income Tax in 1913. Hell is too good for them.

Right to Work laws are needed in ALL states to help combat contract requirements to pay 'fair share" for union representation that many teachers do not want.

I usually see at least a few comments posted by liberals to defend their side of an issue. It appears that no one has any viable reason to support this decision by the liberal politicians in DC that are bought and paid for by the teachers' union.

There's still a Washington Scholarship Fund at http://www.washingtonscholarshipfund.org/. It's administered by the same people who administered the government program. Contributions are tax deductible and go to the same poor kids.

Without the indoctrination they recieve in public schools, these Black students might think they could succeed in America by studying and working hard instead of voting Democrat and waiting for a handout. It is time to begin an underground railroad movement getting these kids out of the clutches of the public school tyrants who enslave them forever in ignorance and poverty. Here is what I propose: Private schools, homeschools find a way of coordinating very privately, without publicity, without fanfare to get these children out of the schools, even if they have to be put up in a boarding school situation. Get them both the academic and vocational training they need to live productive lives. The public schools in urban areas are irreparably broken, and there is no hope in fixing them.
Just as there was a silent 'white flight' out of the cities when affirmative action and corrupt democratic mayors began to run these cities into the ground, there ought to be a kind of black student flight out of the public schools in Greater Dystopia.
Obamma's children live like little princesses in the lap of luxury. They dine on caviar and Kobe beef. They attend the finest schools that our tax money can buy. They travel Europe and shop in the toniest boutiques. They hang out with the Jonas brothers and other famous stars. The fine and diligent African-American students of the D.C. voucher program are stuck with table scraps. Obama's have sold out the African American community, using them as pawns to take power, and then turning their backs on the people. Michelle hangs with Oprah, and dear leader plays golf at the luxury Country Club while African American children suffer and give up their future. Wake up people. While your children work hard to achieve, and you kill yourself at two jobs to help them get the best education, the Obamma's pick your pockets to pay for their De-lux lifestyle.

The union members themselves are overwhelminly conservative but the National Education Association uses their monies against their will to fund their own Dewey- type agenda.
