Reason.tv’s Nick Gillespie sat down with Greene at the National Summit on Education Reform in Washington, D.C., to talk about why competition makes schools better.
This interview is part of National School Choice Week, a non-partisan initiative to raise awareness of how competition and choice can transform K-12 education.

Until parents get heavely involved with resolving school problems through the state legislature, PTA, and the school boards, education will continue to suffer at the hands of the unions, principles, and district administrators.
They taught my kid about MLK, but they have yet to teach my kid about the pilgrims or our founding fathers. The education in this country is a joke. A cruel and disgusting joke. If I had the money they would be out of that school in a flat second.
A lot of EU countries already tie money to the kid and allow the parents to move kids if the kid is failing. Sweden dumped our monolithic system in the 90s when they were spending as much as we were per kid and getting the same crappy results.
What this shows is American progressives are at least 20 years behind EU progressives. We not only are inundated with progressives but backward and antiquated ones as well.
Bust to Dust the damned communist Unions reProgramming our kids into Zombies…
I'm lucky enough to live in a Mid-West area where the schools are still pretty good but I have to say that I have fought with my children about what they were taught and the truth and you know the Internet caused alot of discussions in there clasrooms
So I guess the internet is not all bad
So the bad just keep getting worse?
it's not about better outcomes,it's about control, you can't control a populace that has brains, dumb them down they become easier to control. That's the real issue we need to confront.
I so admire parents who home school. Not all of us have the temperament to do that. For the rest of us school choice is key. We need to be able to reward success and walk away from failure.
If I trashed my neighborhood would you help me to just move on to another location and do the same thing there? Jay, my kids and family now come first and foremost, I am no longer interested in what you and liberals want. Let’s face it, it is liberal schools in leftist areas that are having all the problems. You don’t get a do over in this, what you have done to our schools, to our kids who wanted to learn and to the parents who depended on you to do your jobs, is way beyond criminal. Your jobs, remember, you were hired to teach and now you just want to spread the misery. Social justice!
Hey Jay, we don't need your bad product, not any more. Our kids are smart enough to no longer need what these schools are offering, they can learn to read and write, how to add and subtract without Jays help. It sounds as if Jay just wants to wreck the schools that have not already been ruined by leftists, but, he probably thinks he is doing us all a great service. It’s a new America and the old rules no longer apply, thank the liberal news media and please, find another line of work..
how about getting the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT OUT of the teaching business…..
after 30 or so years it's kinda obvious
they DON'T KNOW what the F@$# there doing…
MORE money spent PER PUPIL than ever before
and they can't even SPELL..
Guess what the school will say about the pilgrims and the founders when they do mention them : "They were racist, sexist, homophobic, gun-owning white males who denied women and Latinos the right to vote while keeping gays out of the Continental Army…"
Nick Gillespie asks:
"What are the advantages of school choice",…….???????
Aside from superior educated children,………
it's all about the same.
The U.S. Department of Education are tethered slaves to the teachers unions.
Our schools and colleges will continue to suffer until this monopoly is broken!
Komrade Obama's peasant agenda:
Enrich the poor, by making the wealthy work harder!
And "Clinging to their guns and religion." –Barack Obama
Nothing will grow, until Obama goes….
No, what that shows is that EU progressives aren't elitists or at least EU progressives couldn't care less what elitists have to say if the outcomes don't support the desired results. US progressive commoners are just plain dumb to those facts…too busy watching Snooki.
"Choice" is idiotic in the form they are talking about. What they want is quality education. You can "choose" between schools (none of this is cheap, mind you, and you are still going to be VERY limited due to GEOGRAPHY) that are all crappy. Who cares? JUST LIKE CELL PHONES – PERFECT example of the "market" at work. You can "choose" between 3 or four companies that ALL SUCK. Explain that!!!!!!!!!
This is BUMPER STICKER politics – if that is all you have to offer then I'm disappointed.
Ask WHAT makes a good school? A necessary ingredient to having a truly superb education is a mono-racial and mono-cultural community. But you aren't prepared to even acknowledge that. So everything you try will fail unless you STUMBLE on to that situation by happenstance.
Those that wanted to destroy this nation knew what they were doing. They destroyed the schools by forcing integration. The results are plain to see.
Contrariwise, those that wanted to built this nation had segregation for a reason.
It is pretty easy when you look at the motives. Who are you going to trust – someone like the Founding Fathers or some 60's agitator with a Jewfro?
All Black and All White schools do better than any mixture. Would you rather keep your head buried in the sand than actually do something that has proven to work? Not very open-minded of you……
We need "choice" like we need "choice" in the elections between two parties.
Wake up, people. Some gimmick isn't going to save you. Until you are willing to really take a look at things like Carlin did – you are just going to spin your wheels.

Strange thing, our babys were getting to be that age to sign them up for school. We'd moved into the nicest nieghborhood in town, and the best performing grade school virtually down the street from us- so as not to have any problem getting our kids in we signed them into the district 6 months early. The assignment papers came in a couple of weeks before school was due to start, and the district placed my children in a school 7 miles away, in a grade school placed in the middle of farm fields! It was the lowest performing school with the highest # of english language learners in the county. We found a sensibly priced private Christian school, and enrolled them there until we ran out of money 3 yrs later. Now we've got them in a public school that's recently out performed the original
Charter schools are closing? Why would they when they get all the tax money as well as corporate funding with little accountabilty – AND parents keep choosing them, so much so that many use lotteries for entrance. More bad schools (that cost more money) is not a solution to the education problem.
Fact is, there's not much choice. It's "traditional" schooling (I include religious and charter schools here) or home schooling. There's very little creativity in education.
no 'creativity' in education is needed….
teach:
READING
WRITING
ARITHMETIC
why not START here and then see what happens..
oh, and leave the teachers 'opinion' OUT of the classroom..
In the early 1900's the Progressive Party started "tinkering" with our Public School system. Their main goal was to De-Christianize the system. They were socialists.
The goal of the school system is to produce a product that is happy and compliant with Govt Policies.
People don't realize that God divided the nations and set the boundaries thereof. He started with 70 nations. He divided mankind 4 different ways and told them to "Stay Put and Protect your Borders!".
The present United Nations establishment is a repeat of the The Tower of Babel situation, which God destroyed in a peacefull way.
The Present system is going to be destroyed in a very violent way.
Education is susposed to be a State Issue only. What happened?
With school choice, do they have different books?
Yes, my district tried to play a game with me a and my youngest a number of years ago but I fought them and won. This was a kid who was taking advanced math classes, and bettering most of his fellow students at the local JR College on his HS summer breaks. You have to stand up for your kids, which you are, you pay for the schools, you own the schools, they work for you. You don’t have to get nasty, I was always very polite, but firm and unbending. Of course I always received plenty of scowls from the administration, but, I don’t mind that. Good luck and best wishes for your little ones and their futures.
And really, 50 percent of what my kids learned they learned at home. I try to make it interesting, a challenge, no awards except my admiration and respect. You can teach them all the stuff you want them to learn. The best advice I can give parents is, teach your kids the basics, ABC's, 123's, before they enter school. If you do that, no matter what their level of intelligence might be they will do just fine.
