Filmmaker Michael Covel on Broke: The New American Dream
by Reason TV“[Politicians and the Federal Reserve] rigged the market,” says financial author and filmmaker Michael Covel. “They rigged the market through interest rate manipulation and we’re still paying for it today.” In his documentary, Broke: The New American Dream, Covel explores the roots of the financial crisis, which he traces back to Netscape going public in 1995.
Covel sat down with Reason.tv’s Ted Balaker to discuss the role politicians, the Federal Reserve, Wall Street, and media figures like CNBC’s Jim Cramer played in the financial meltdown. Topics include: why Covel is down on “buy and hold” as an investment strategy and the differences between state lotteries and poker.
Approximately 9.18 seconds.

Good video ! It has all been smoke and mirrors, one giant scam on the American people.
I hope we will need to build new prisons to house all the crooks. A job program I can support.
The closing statement "For the most part politicians add zero value" said everything. Multiply by zero and …
Gary I SOOOO wish you were right about them going to prison but I'm afraid it won't happen. They are in bed with the politicians on both sides of the isle and no one is going to push for justice….especially this current administration.
Can we elect enough honest people….I sure hope so!
I would love to see the politicians in jail too. I know it's wishful thinking, but they haven't taken my dreams away yet, or made dreaming illegal. That comes after the election.
Brother, truer words have never been typed.
With government involved in any market the outcome will be the same. This is just one problem that needs solving. November can't get here soon enough, but our re-awakening and engagement must continue well past this election.
I liked the statement "Americans are really poor at math". Relying on the lottery to provide a half million dollars for retirement. Ahhhhhggggg! I need to go back to my balance sheets. LOL
What about the part where he was asked do you think we will learn from this?
When Cramer first came out on CNBC I was subscriber to his website RealMoney, I had been for about a year or two already, I would buy his stocks and then sell into the mention on CNBC, I made great money for about a year, maybe less, just selling into the pump. Then it became impossible to make money on his stocks unless you shorted the pump because everyone started getting the newsletter so everyone was already in and trying to sell the pump.
Really this guy bashes Cramer as a buy and holder and Cramer has always been a buy and sell guy–a trader, he has always preached against buy and hold and this is not a fair accounting of his trading philosophy at all.
When will people understand that the so called great govt we have is the cause of these problems? Oh wait here comes big brother they know exactly how to fix the problem they created by spending more money on the problem, more regulations, and most importantly congressional oversight. Yeah that has fixed all the other problems we have with Social Security, Medicare, Eduction, etc…
THEY deliberately broke it so that the could FIX it……….
I shivered with the thought. I think many of us have but the vast majority seem to have such short memories.
The "Great NoBama Fall" is closer than you think ! http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20101007/bs_afp/forex...
Now there is some venom dripping sarcasm. I like it. “They only care about a seat” I believe he said and that is the absolute truth. Create a mess, obfuscate, then create some complicated legislation to fix the problem. They are no better than common conmen.
Does this article ring a bell to help us understand what Barack Obama is and is doing to the United States?
http://www.forbes.com/2008/11/03/obama-fabian-soc...
Why would we expect them to fix a problem when it can make them rich if they ignore it or make it worse?
but i think we have a third bubble right now. the stock market keeps going up, but all market indicators say it is way overvalued. nobody has money, nobody has jobs, the government is broke, and why is the market going up? i have heard the fed is purchasing stocks, if this is true, this is a bad thing. once they call it the day, or cash out, the market will crash. if congress does not make the current tax cut permanant, we are only kicking the tax increases down the road. does anybody think if tax increases are bad today, they will be better tomorrow?
From all the articles and blogs I have been reading, we are about to enter another crazy time. Here are some articles I highly recommend you all read. The wise man will do what he can to prepare. I am recommending to all my friends and family to hope for the best, but prepare for the worst. This is difficult to read, but really tells us that the Fed, banks and politicians are all out to steal wealth.

"multiply by zero."
According to Clinton Fuzzy and Outcome Based Math, the answer is whatever the Hell the CBO wants it to be.
It is time that we start to develop a longer memory or one day we will be sitting here wondering where the he** the United States of America went. Those who do not want to have the problem fixed need to step aside before they are made a speed bump because the people that want to fix our country are going to step on the gas pedal.
Trickle up poverty is the demoncrats economic "plan"
Maybe just a little, chalk it up to lack of sleep lately.
The really sad part is that there so many people who think these chuckle heads actually care about them when in reality these chuckle are just simple ring master in a circus.
Amen.
Too bad fuzzy math can't be domesticated. LOL
Clearly anti-Semitic..
Actually, that's an optimistic statement. I'm of the opinion that politician actions usually take value away. As in multiply by a negative number.
That is frickin hilarious until the end.
I read your responses to GHUA and FTC regarding your sleepless nights. Lord knows brother, I have been there. In a day or so you will be watching a high school graduation and reflecting on these days. LOL
The entitlement crowd will always be in the ring. Hard working Americans will be the brokers of good sense and judgment. I only hope they become commodities that are in vast supply.
This guy doesn't get it. "Trading" stock doesn't make anything. Nothing is produced by it.
Excellent interview. Especially loved the part about politicos being all for themselves not for the people. Their only concern is retaining their seat in government to grow rich at taxpayer expense without breaking a sweat.
Regarding the housing bubble, folks were sold a bill of goods that a house was an investment rather than a home. But that began in the seventies when the idea was put forth to buy a house, hold it for a few years, then sell it and move up to a bigger one. It was just another keep up with the Jones scam that many bought into.
Are you practicing for your future job to operate the ovens there Smelt-fish? I'm sure that's one job the Obama WILL create if Sharia Law is enforced.
You should know all about being anti semitic.
Same here my friend. As long as we keep fighting the good fight we will same our country and return to the greatness we once had.
True story. My husband and eighth grader were in McD's last month and the 40 year old employee could not divide $3.00 in half. Of course my homeschooler could do that in her head in a split second. My daughter told the employee that they are a $1.50 for 2 and and she argued that ….NO that are 2 for $3.00. OMG. These are the morons who voted for the morons that decided multiplying by zero just means that Fort Knox prints a bunch of money!!! I wonder when a loaf of bread will be 10 bucks each?
I know. But it definitely makes the point. The democrats must go.
Our units of government have spent all the money we have in our economy and have committed us to still more spending – an amount equal to almost twice the total current wealth of the entire planet. Every answer seems to end up with the same doomsday outcomes of continual recessions, massive currency devaluations, foreign ownership of our wealth, epic unemployment, unrestrained new spending and tax rates that only guarantee the future of the ruling-class at the expense of everyone else. If you look at the history of the modern era, you see these outcomes are not just a reoccurring theme, but the unavoidable outcomes the structure of our economy guarantees must happen. In the modern era, planet Earth has tried socialism, communism, feudalism, totalitarianism and fascism to create different economic outcomes for the societies that supported these solutions and all of them have failed because of the inherent structural flaws these systems cannot overcome. All of them result in concentrations of wealth in a rigid class system that results in dictatorial societies that Americans will not tolerate.
Yet resolution remains our peoples’ key fiscal demand.
The resolution of these issues is actually quite simple; we have to reorganize the structure of the relationships of the key stakeholders in our economy (and not our free-market capitalist system of economic organization, per se) and change our capital and credit systems (banking and public capital markets structures). Everything flows from these changes. We want all government spending to in fact be a true stimulus to our economy – every single economist will agree that this goal is the key goal we want, but have never been able to obtain. We have not been able to obtain this goal because we use taxation to pay for government and not investment-income. As a result, we create currency in a way that always hurts our economy and prevents our banking system from being self-sustaining and self-regulating and this is the most important part. If a banking and credit system is not self-sustaining in nature and design, then it will create credit bubbles in various markets (as we see today) and it will fail (like socialism, our fractional-reserve banking system has failed in every country where it has been implemented, thus proving this fundamental tenet). If a credit system is not self-regulating, then people will corrupt it (government will corrupt it) for their own ends (and we see various “banking reforms” that never reform or prevent any banking/credit malady). Self-liquidating credit is the only banking system that is self-sustaining and self-regulating in nature and would make the Federal Reserve System as useless as your appendix. This is the key that would then result in all fiscal expenditures by all units of government being 100% stimulative to the private-sector economy, retire our national debt and end our reliance upon that which has never been able to work for our benefit in the recorded history of our planet (i.e.: the benevolence of foreign creditors). Change you can achieve in.
Yeah. I haven't been sleeping well since Nov. of 2008. Valerian Root is a natural sedative that's OTC.
I feel like I blinked and now I have a teenager. I had three kids in 5 years so I didn't sleep for about 8 years and changed diapers for about the same amount of time. No breaks. As soon as one was potty trained I had another!!
It was and is a rigged system and politicians played their part to get themselves elected and paid too. We;ve had enough of that.
That was not capitalism — that was socialism– and crony capitalism. Fake. Like the MSM that props it up.
We want the real capitalism back like we do at the local store.
.
I agree, but we can not just limit it to the dems. We need to remove all those who believe that the govt is the solution to all our problems and replace them with people who believe that citizens need to solve their own problems. The only way we can solve our own problems is with Freedom.
That don't surprise me. Just last week end I was in Wal Mart and I noticed a dude trying to read. I usually can tell, by the way they act. …he came up to me an casually said….." my eyes are bad and I can't read the small print can you help me? " Must be related to the other nuts on the hill that can't read.
Do you agree or disagree that public ownership of the means of production (i.e., via the stock market) is a good thing for an economy and society and that the ability to freely trade stock is a key element of making that market efficient?
Now that takes courage.
We are still debating whether or not this one gets a playmate.
My sedative of choice is Cherry Rum
According to SmellyGymShorts it's the Zionist Bankers fault.
Oh go for it.
Trust me….you won't sleep these days regardless of how many kids you have.
Better hurry though, while you still can. they're putting a limit on how many kids you can have.
"Valerian Root is a natural sedative that's OTC. "
So is kicking the criminals off the hill! : )
Do they look like this? Scan through these photos for a laugh.
http://www.peopleofwalmart.com/?page_id=9798
BTW These people are what I imagine our trolls here look like!!
…public ownership of the means of production…
That sounds like Marxism – might need to ask Palin about that.
is a good thing for an economy and society and that the ability to freely trade stock is a key element of making that market efficient?
But "the market" doesn't produce anything.
A COMPANY sells their stock – there money is raised. But after that, "traders" shuffling the stocks around does not gain anything at all (except for the brokers.)
I have no problem with a second child, but my wife is the one that is wishy washy about it. I think once we get a better handle on what we are doing the part about this one needing a playmate will start to kick in.
LOL That's exactly what the trolls look like, only they have kool aid rings around their mouths, and cheeto crumbs on their cloths.
Amen to that!!
COTH = Criminals off the hill.
LOL …"Therapy" ….you're funny. It's even funnier if you think FC has the money for it.
Well…….the fun part is trying for more kids LOL!!
Of course us wimmin folk have to be PG for 9 months though. Then it's sleepless nights filled with spit up and poopey butts.
I totally agree. I see this as a two front war. On one front, we're fighting the obama agenda, and that requires us to eliminate the democrat majorities in Congress. The other is cleaning up the Republican Party. That will begin with this election, where I'm hoping some of our new Conservatives that get elected will stand up to the RINO establishment and expose the corruption in the GOP.
Remember, a lot of the Tea Party candidates ran against the establishment types. They won't quickly forget who it was that fought against them.
I hear ya!. Four kids… two years apart. I had Hope and Change for a looooonnngggg time. Hope one didn't explode before I could the get the other one Changed.
Thank God he saw fit to create potty training. Pampers stocks took a nose dive when we did that.
I am learning that first hand and yes it is fun trying.
Dittos on the Pampers — holds the stuff in better!! My youngest potty trained the easiest because she thought it was fun to go flush the big potty chair and repeat…….she pooped, she pooped!! Good times good times. Course, she would flush the toilet whenever she got the chance. Thank God she never gave herself a swirly : )
That is real hope and change
If they do forget they will get booted just like every one else when their turn comes up.
Well the package says it holds up to 30 lbs. I keep telling you people this. : )
Stop wasting them. LOL
Maybe the new health care bill will cover it. The sad thing is I am still going through the pictures, this is simply a train wreck waiting to happen.
Hesus Christos, Santa Maria!
You are one dumb phuck!
You are the only person I have ever seen, who could take something innocuous as Valentines Day, or Halloween and turn it into a Semitic rant.
And when Walmart is forced to unionize, those people in the pics are going to be the ones working there ahhhhhh!!
Oh yeah, don't those people know that they should NOT be "shopping at the Gap while crackin' a smile"? Especially is you are bigger than Mooch-elle and have a lot of junk in the trunk!
IN all seriousness where is their self respect?
I stand corrected and agree. LOL
Yea! Right! 30lbs? You bought that lie too? Way overrated. ;-P
that's funny right there…..
Democrats shopping at Walmart and what our trolls here probably look like…..
http://www.peopleofwalmart.com/?page_id=9798
I posted this one a couple of weeks ago. Speaking of diapers………
Bawney sings the banking queen
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TdttzizWhCg
I never knew that being a parent meant assembly line worker. No unionizing allowed on the job either…. but some great benefits.
Good point. They don't have ANY at all. Why would any self respecting moron dress like that and walk out the door? They live how they want to and We The People foot the bill while they vote in the Party of Food Stamps. These are the people who are going to flip out when the gubment check stops getting deposited into their bank or the dollar isn't worth a tinker's damn.
actually, the bubble is in the bond market. That's the one you need to be prepared for when it bursts.
Ouch! Gee thanks….. Retina burns! I have been permanently blinded…. and there goes my lunch too.
Do you know why they're not going to forget? Because WE'RE not going to forget. Between the Tea Parties, the Breitbarts, and hell, ALL OF US, this next Congress will be under the harshest scrutiny in the history of this country. If any of them sneeze the wrong way, we'll have it splattered across the internet. If they walk towards the middle of the road, we'll run them over. After all is said and done, it's not the candidates that I trust, it's the VOTERS who are going to keep them honest. It's US that'll apply the pressure. In the next two years and beyond, we'll be using a slightly modified Reagan approach with our congressmen; "Verify. Then ReVerify." "Trust" will come later.
Hmm……just watch that one before ya eat — good way to lose weight cause you'd lose your appetite.
'we' build the prisons? I say 'THEY' build it, and until it's finished to federal specifications, they live in tents and use porta-johns.
Any escape attempt adds 10 years hard labor of breaking big rocks into smaller rocks, then pounding the smaller rocks into sand, then filling sand-bags; then neatly stacking said sand-bags in a warehouse. Any day a sand-bag filling quota isn't met, add another year.
It's no wonder I prefer shopping at Target.
"A COMPANY sells their stock – there money is raised. But after that, "traders" shuffling the stocks around does not gain anything at all (except for the brokers.) "
False.
Why would anyone buy the stock if they didn't think it would appreciate? Note that most firms do not pay dividends these days.
Allowing the free market to make buy/sell decisions concerning stocks means that the company is valued at the most accurate price possible.
made of win!
Here's some more scary Democrats…..just post on BBTV…..
Students get naked for Healthcare…..
http://www.breitbart.tv/students-get-naked-for-ob...
That picture would make a great fridge magnet. But don't overdose! It only takes one viewing to last the whole week. We are talking major anorexia here that could result in visit to an intensive care unit.
Lucky for us we have this wonderful cure all program….. Obama MedUsa Care to cover the cost.
MORE Michael Covel. LESS Paul Krugman. PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He could narrow down "Federal Reserve" to NY Fed. Those rascals should be on death row. By what reasoning?
Just ask yourself. How many families were baited into buying houses they couldn't afford under terms that were dubious at best? And how many families have been destroyed by those policies? And how many divorces were directly related to the fall from grace?
And how many people have committed suicide from said fall from grace? Ten? 100? 1000? I wonder. Without doing the research I'll bet you dollars to donuts that number is not only going up but is also being under reported.
Ain't that a real hoot? Students getting naked to support taking the shirt off the taxpayers back.
I agree 100%. The trust thing will be much later in my book. It is easy to get trust the first time, but to get it a second is much harder.
Stop I can not laugh any more or I am going to puke.
I will take all the pointers I can get since this is my first go around.
Just goes to show how easy it is to brain wash those with no common sense. Are you frickin kidding how they are whinning about getting kicked off mommy and daddy health insurance, here is a wake up call boys and girls it is time to become an adult so you deal with real life just like every one else before has done.
Just wait till you discover that God has a sense of humor… soon the stink hits the diaper too. That's when things get really interesting… especially in crowds or on elevators.
I remember loading up to go on our first trip out with our first child. It took all day to get ready and to load the car. Lucky for us… the 30 minute trip to Walmart was just a few blocks away. It's hard work packing something that small and delicate in a car seat… so stock up on bubble wrap.
After you get used to the first one… you discover that kids are really resilient… They tend to bounce when dropped.
I used the adult strength Ambesol for teething not the wimpy infant stuff. I went through tubes of that stuff. I hated teething. I had an infected tooth the same day my first finally cut in her first tooth. It took nine freakin' months for that ONE tooth to break through. I was upstairs taking pain killers and antibiotics and my oldest was downstairs screaming. Thank God I have a husband who is involved : )
The comments on that Naked for Ocare are funny too. I'm over there now making comments about that guys man boobs.
Hurry up and finish lunch and get your butt back on here!!
When the interest rates fell, I saw a lot of people refinance. They used the extra cash to purchase other things. There was new interest in buying a home from people who hadn't considered it before. Real estate people were more than happy to sell homes to people who couldn't afford the house payments because they (real estate people) received a commission check for doing this. The bankers had to approve the loans, though. The bankers were supposed to research the loan applicants to make sure they had the finances to make their loan payments. Low interest rates created interest in home loans, but rotten bankers passed on bad loans so they could get fat commission checks. Bankers and real estate people created this bubble. And, they're doing it again with the help of our hard-earned tax dollars.
That was awesome. Low interest = free money = speculation = bubbles = OUCH! Where'd my job go?!
Sorry… I hadda go earn some money so I could pay for naked college student's health care. I'm sure the mortgage company will understand why we are late with the payment.
BTW…. Do you know if McDonald's hiring? I may have to take on a third job…. I seem to have lost my shirt somewhere.
Good morning Duuuh,
That reminds me of a poor child who went to school with only 1 shoe.
And the teacher said…." you poor thing, you lost your shoe."
And the kid said all excited……" no ma'am I found this one." ; )
Dang you two, those were long lunches! You must work for the union.
Don't we all work for the unions?
Our tax money goes to bail them out so that they can make huge campaign contributions to social progressive Marxist politicians who in turn get them even more bailouts every time we turn around.
We are simply non-voting non-members… but we do pay our dues.
Actually I'm a professional at paying taxes. Quite good at it too I might add.
I work in the slave dept. LOL
Morning Ma'am…
I did find my shirt…. some college kid is wearing it. I let him keep it cause he was eyeing my pants pretty hard too.
What are they going to do when they run out of other peoples printed money?
Same here. My husband has to work to pay for all the girls who have a child with ten different men and then sit around on their asses all day.
