The Atrazine Scare Is Just the Beginning
by Robert James BidinottoRecently, I reported here on the environmentalists’ trumped-up scare campaign targeting atrazine, a valuable, widely used agricultural herbicide. I quoted a Wall Street Journal editorial that observed, “The environmental lobby also figures that if it can take down atrazine with its long record of clean health, it can get the EPA to prohibit anything.”

In fact, the attack on atrazine is just part of the total war against man-made chemicals that is waged today by environmentalists inside and outside of government.
On May 6, the President’s Cancer Panel fired the latest salvo in this battle, in the form of its annual report, Reducing Environmental Cancer Risk: What We Can Do Now. The report follows in the scare-mongering tradition established by the Natural Resources Defense Council, a major green lobby. As I noted earlier, the NRDC’s 1989 pesticide report—citing bogus rodent experiments—fomented a nationwide panic over the chemical alar, abetted by media sympathizers. Last year, the group issued a similar faux “study” to gin up alarm over atrazine.
The presidential panel’s report similarly relies on “junk science” to reach alarmist conclusions, and was pre-released to reliably green journalists to maximize its visibility. Columnist Nicholas Kristof of the New York Times was one. In “New Alarm Bells About Chemicals and Cancer,” Kristof proclaimed that “the mission control of scientific and medical thinking, the President’s Cancer Panel” was “poised to join ranks with the organic food movement and declare: chemicals threaten our bodies.” Reuters likewise reported the story under the scary title, “Americans ‘Bombarded’ with Cancer Sources: Report.”
Yet, jarringly, the first sentence in the report’s cover letter to President Obama begins: “Though overall cancer incidence and mortality have continued to decline in recent years . . .”
How to reconcile this admission with the report’s frightening thesis: that the “American people—even before they are born—are being bombarded continually with myriad combinations of these dangerous exposures”? If cancer-causing chemicals are widespread and increasing, why do overall cancer rates and deaths continue to fall?
To its credit, the New York Times highlighted strong criticism by the American Cancer Society leveled against the government report. ACS epidemiologist Dr. Michael Thun blasted the study as “unbalanced by its implication that pollution is the major cause of cancer,” and for claiming, without proof, that environmentally caused cancer cases are “grossly underestimated.”
In truth, says the ACS, only six percent of all U.S. cancers are related to “environmental causes”—four percent from occupational exposures and just two percent from all other settings. “Environmental causes” thus represent only a tiny fraction of the overall incidence of U.S. cancers, which are due overwhelmingly to non-environmental factors—mainly genetics and voluntary lifestyle choices.
“If we could get rid of tobacco, we could get rid of 30 percent of cancer deaths,” Dr. Thun said, adding that poor nutrition, obesity, and lack of exercise contribute far more to cancer susceptibility than do pollutants.
But that’s not the conclusion the presidential panel wants you to reach.
Throughout their report, weasel-words such as “may,” “can,” “possible,” “suggests,” and “suspected” proliferate. A rodent study “suggests” that Chemical X “may” be a “possible” carcinogen, or is “suspected” to disrupt endocrine, or is “linked to” genetic deformities. These ambiguities insinuate and inflate a sense of hazard, in the absence of hard evidence. Similarly, completely benign chemicals are labeled “contaminants,” “pollutants,” or “foreign substances,” suggesting an alien invasion of our bodies by deadly poisons. Chemicals are called “toxins” when they may be “toxic” only at extraordinarily high exposure levels, such as those administered to rodents in laboratory tests. Such experiments don’t remotely reflect the trivial, almost undetectable exposures that most of us experience in everyday life.
These manipulations reveal how the panel is captive to the radical-environmentalist worldview.
For example, in an early section on “Environmental Exposures Related to Modern Lifestyles,” it acknowledges that “conveniences of modern life . . . have made life easier for virtually all Americans.” But there’s a Dark Side to the Force of modernity: “Some of these conveniences, however, have come at a considerable price to the environment and human health, and the true health impact of others is unconfirmed.” That last word shows how the authors twist the absence of evidence into a reason for anxiety.
The “use of cell phones and other wireless technology,” we are told, “is of great concern.” But why? “At this time, there is no evidence to support a link between cell phone use and cancer,” the authors admit. “However,” research is “extremely limited.” And: “Similarly, current and potential harms from extremely low frequency radiation are unclear and require further study.” Limited? Potential? Unclear? Why does absence of any evidence of harm constitute reason to spread panic?
It’s clear why the panel’s report was labeled a “a scientific travesty” by the American Council on Science and Health. For, ironically, the greatest threat to public health would come from following the panel’s primary recommendation: “A precautionary, prevention-oriented approach should replace current reactionary approaches to environmental contaminants, in which human harm must be proven before action is taken to reduce or eliminate exposure.” This precautionary approach “should shift the burden of proving safety to manufacturers prior to new chemical approval,” as well as “in renewal applications.”
A chemical manufacturer thus would be treated as guilty of threatening harm until he proved himself and his product innocent. He’d be required to do the logically impossible: to “prove a negative” by refuting an empty assertion of “possible” harm, in the absence of any evidence. Non-evidence becomes “uncertainty,” suggesting a looming threat. Idle speculations are to have equal weight with facts.
Precisely because we have no case—say the precautionists—you’d better do what we say.
This precautionary approach would grant progressive politicians and green bureaucrats god-like powers to halt manufacture of any new substances, including medicines, agricultural chemicals, fuels, alloys—you name it. This would strangle many vital new products in their cribs, posing far greater risks to our health. Had the precautionary principle been in place decades ago, many life-saving medicines and technologies never would have been allowed. For example, penicillin has saved countless lives. But penicillin and other antibiotics are highly toxic to guinea pigs. If the “precautionary principle” had been the rule when these antibiotics were first under study, the government never would have allowed them to become available—and over the ensuing decades, that decision would have cost the lives of thousands, perhaps millions suffering from infections.
Likewise, if the precautionary principle is enacted—as the panel proposes—we won’t have many of the agricultural chemicals that dramatically improve crop yields and spare billions from hunger or starvation. We won’t have pesticides that check deadly epidemics spread by filthy vermin. There’s another irony: Less healthy and well-fed, we might become susceptible to increased cancer risks. How else to explain why, in a world full of these allegedly perilous chemicals, cancer rates are plunging and life expectancy increasing?
All products carry risks, and we manage them by making common-sense trade-offs. We treat diseases with medicines, even though they may pose a slight chance of allergic reactions in some people, because the diseases are a far greater risk to our health. Similarly, we use chemicals to boost food supplies and kill disease-bearing pests, because not doing so would constitute a far greater hazard to our well-being.
But environmentalists are not interested in making common-sense trade-offs. Fanatics never are. That’s why they themselves become hazardous to human health when they occupy positions of political power.

i am getting sick of this junk science! We had to endure the tirades of Al Gore, until it became apparent that everything he convinced Hollywood of, was completely bogus! Giving him accolades for making up garbage was the last straw! We are in dire need of an administration that cares enough about this country, to allow farmers to grow vegetables again! Getting the things we need to eat from foreign countries, that do not have the same standards as the USA, is getting too dangerous, and way too pricey!
JUNK SCIENCE RULES because the Administration is far too important to read (as evidenced by failure to read AZ SB1070) and they do not want to hear what the honest to goodness researchers have to say and idiots lift minor phrases and VOILA we have JUNK SCIENCE SOUNDBITES that allow Barack Hussein Obama's rapid march to NWO.
Now Now…. its all good, If you want to use said pesticide you must register with the EPA and buy "Pesticide offset credits". You know from the new "pesticide offset credit exchange" or POCE, This new exchange will be run buy the all the democrats that will lose in November, (about 150 or so). Until it all gets shut down in 2012 that is.
Please America… Shut these idiots down, 6 months to go. tick tick tick ti
what are we going to do when these idiots ban all chemicals, and people keep dying of cancer, are we going to start banning regular food, until just water is left. as rush points out carrots are very dangerous. everybody who eats one will die, eventually, so we should ban carrots using that logic. in africa the leading killer is malarya, not aids. ddt would stop the malarya problem there, but they want bed nets. what happens if malarya come back to our shores, and we don't have ddt, bed nets for us?
Gotta love the "precautionary principle". It can be used any way at all as long as it supports the progressive destruction of civilization.
We need to pass law X even though we cant show that it will solve problem Y even though we know that it will cause problem Z, just as a precaution because problem Y is so much more important then problem Z..
We need to ban product A even though we cant prove that it causes problem B, even tough we can prove that it solves problem C, just as a precaution because problem B is just so scary.
WT???
For decades the US medical industry and the US government pushed known human carcinogens to women called HRT (Premarin and Prempro) that demanded women ingest these known human carcinogens daily. And then turned their backs on the alarming increase in female cancer rates and went looking for every possible highly remote causitive agent while totally ignoring the daily doses these women were taking into themselves in the form of a known prescription pill.
Who can forget the alarm finding Marin County to be the breast cancer capital of the US and how they looked everywhere but the obvious – a bunch of upper middle class women downing their estrogen/progesterone youth pills willingly and gladly while the reacted in horror there was something in the water or the air or the ground or in their food that was killing and maiming them.
But they never looked at the pill bottle in their very hands. That their doctors had given them with full FDA approval that has now been shown to be their very deadly culprit staring them in the face all the time.
All of these environmentalists are anti-human. People will die as a result of enviro-madness.
Millions died as a result of banning DDT, turns out over nothing but the same scare tactics. Environmentalists need to go to China and leave the rest of the world alone for a couple of decades. They are just making things worse by driving corporations overseas to hide and beating a dead horse here.
What no one mentions is that part of the carcinogen testing routine is to inject lab rats with massively high doses of chemicals, to see if they develop cancer.
But lab rats normally develop cancer and die by age three………on their own………
There would be no need to resort to theatrics, over-the-top dramatizations and fiction if this Administration were capable of producing and implementing any genuine idea or policy of any practical use to the people of this country.
First, we were all to fear for our lives from the Swine Flu and now we're about to start dropping like flies from atrazine–if 'global warming' doesn't toast us all to cinders, first.
I think Team Obama ought to consider taking its dog and pony show across the pond to Europe–permanently.
Amen Brother! These idiots are hazardous to human health. Just ask the 50 million or so people in Africa that got malaria thanks to the hysterical ban on DDT. What you say? Oh, right you can not ask them… they are all dead.
Time to disestablish the EPA.
Atrazine is nothing compared to the killer powers of di-hydrogen monoxide, that is what we really need to ban!
Rodent studies? These people could put tiny overalls on rats and prove that they cause cancer. Rats are just cancer factories after a certain age because they live fast and die young in nature. I'd like someone to study the natural incidence of cancer in wild rats. I'll bet the numbers would be quite low despite the fact that these rats are exposed to God only knows what all in their daily lives.
These people want a smoking gun to stop people from getting cancer, but the dirty little secret is that cancer starts with a mutation in one's own DNA (usually the part that controls cell division). All you have to do is live long enough and you are virtually assured of getting cancer no matter what sort of environment you maintain for yourself. And while some things might nudge that mutation, they won't do so for everyone and they might not do so for the majority. In the end, you make that trade-off between possible harm and the benefits.
This is just on part of the elites plan to get population down to Middle Ages figures.Without man-made chemicals half of the worlds population will perish….All I can say to people that want less people around is ,"You first."
We need cornpone's expertise on this… and the coming food shortage.
I guess proglibs are pushing for another Holodomor, after all.
This dangerous chemical can be linked to the death of thousands of people each year. It must be banned.
Nah, nets are the band-aids, distractions the left uses to 'hide' what the UN's African genocide agenda really is while making Libs feel good about themselves for 'caring'.
Hey, where did you get that picture of Obama (PBUH) that you used in your article? Insult to good pigs everywhere!
Ain't that the truth.

HAHAHA!!!
I was going to use that (P!** BUH) in my mo-ham pics but relented at the last minute.
they are starting to ban di-hydrogen monoxide, didn't you see that town that banned it in the bottled format? pretty soon we won't be able to get any in bottles, where will we get in then?
i know where we can get us some of those rodents, i saw one last week at the white house. they showed the rat, next thing you know, a rodent up and ran in front of him
funny and I accidentally minus oned you
Especially dangerous if it is administered via "boarding". Though side effects may include stopping actual violence against innocent people…
Support junk science! Where else would the litigation attorneys get the money to fund the Demonrats? A symbiotic relationship to help "the people". What a bunch of f*cknuts.
Get the hell out of the way and our lives, government. We probably could be curing cancer right now if it weren't for their interference.
That goes for those stupid billionares too.
Exactly! "What a bunch of f*cknuts"…
I could not have said it better!
When Jesus returns to establish his kingdom on Earth, He will wreak a terrible vengeance on these environmentalist wackos. God is the answer, and he is sending his Only Begotten Son back very soon, indeed, to take care of business. In fact, I'm not sure we need to get angry or vote in the meantime. That's how soon it will be, and besides, it's all foreordained.
Lisa Jackson would do well to turn to Jesus this instant!
In fact, it's found in many packaged foods, soft drinks, even in tap water! Handwashing does NOT remove it! It is estimated that the majority of ALL Americans have high levels of DHM in their bodies!
Why do I keep flashing on those scenes in The Killing Fields where the Cambodian people were forced out of the cities, to the labor farms, where the teachers were killed and eyeglasses were smashed?
Oh, yeah, it wasn't just a movie–it was a movement, an extreme left-wing agrarian utopia ideal of some nutjobs.
Products with atrazine are effective in controlling weeds on St. Augustine grass.
Obama causes "problems". Ban him, quick.
Yeeeuuusssss, You rang?
cornpone is sick and tired of fighting this battle, Weed Up………..Besides I just got home from the best
damn rib joint within 300 miles, I ate too much, and I drank too much, don't know if I can even type or
spell for that matter. How'm I doin' so far? Looks purdy good to me, I'll keep goin'. Can the cops pull
you over and do a breathalyzer for TWI?
this is the second article on atrazine this week, thank goodness this author at least is skeptical of the
Regimes VOO DOO Science. They are using these press releases and BS discussion of so called
'scientific studies' in an effort to fan the flames of fear to get the LSM on board to help them brainwash
the general public into demanding agriculture go absolutely chemical free. They've sent this trial bal-
loon up already about 3 times, one of these times it will catch on. Probably during a slow news week,
although we haven't seemed to have had any of those lately.
We can go chemical free, but rather than corn, which becomes steak, we will go to all wheat. We
can about half-ass raise wheat most years with no chemicals. If we have an aphid infestation or
a fungus outbreak we just won't have bread for a year, see how simple that is? The USSR used to
have problems of this nature all the time, no biggie. They had bead lines and food riots regularly.
The Left will feel so special dining in their 5 star restaurants while discussing the latest food short-
age in Any City, USA. After all what's the use of being in power if you can't 'lord' over the peasants.
The Regimes working name for their new initiative is called Romantic Agrarianism. The details are
sketchy, but so far the spies inside their movement have got a little info out to the farm organizations.
Farm Futures Magazine had a little tid-bit about a month ago.
The Regime has 'pie in the sky' ideas of raising all agricultural crops within 100 miles of the major urban areas, this would cut out the freight costs, sorry truckers. The Regime has the idea that all the veggies
should be raised on small plots using hand labor (don't deport the w b's , we'll need them) with no chem-
icals. They call it 'farm to table in 24'(hrs). oHugo jr wants us to be like China, WTH? I can't even tell you
how many ways and their reason, that this crapola won't work. This Regime is IN-EFFIN-SANE !
Problem with the Regimes plan is 2 people working a 5 acre plot raising various veggies will burn 5K
calories a day each, so they are basically only raising enough food for their own consumption, sorry
slickers there won't be any left-overs to bring to town to sell at the farmers market. A whole refrigerator
full of veg won't equal 10K calories, that's why we need a little steak to eat with our veg. Mmm, Mmm,
good……..grass fed steak,……………. I'd as soon eat road-kill.
We have used atrazine for 30 years. The manufacturer recommended rate per acre has been reduced
exponentially (damn I spelled that right on the 1st try, I must be soberin' up), over those 30 years. Atra-
zine is sprayed on bare ground to prevent weed seed from germinating in the spring. It lies in the top
couple of inches of soil and never comes in contact with the ear of corn, although there may be some
up-take through the roots of the corn plant. Haf'ta ask an agronomist about that, it's above my pay grade.
I havecleaned out spray tips with no rubber gloves, run a spray-rig behind an open tractor etc. and never
had it affect me in any way. I've done everything but drink the damn stuff, it's safe. We never let our kids
work around it while they were growing up, but as far as I can tell my husband or I have had no ill effect
from contact.
They need to cull the herd – too many workers. What better way than to reduce the food supply?
LOL! That what Thomas Sowell says in his article "Artificial Stupidity"!
Once upon a time, a guy named Thomas Midgely Jr invented Tetraethyl Lead, which became popular additives for fuels that improved lots of things like it stopped the pinging of engines. The Car companies loved it, but it also killed dozens of people that produced it and then caused untold trouble. Entire communities were devastated with Lead Poisoning.
Then the same guy, Thomas Midgely Jr, who invented lead additives, had a new invention that everyone wanted called Chlorofluorocarbons better known as "CFC"'s. Wow what a product, it quickly was used in literally thousands of products that is, until they found out every molecule of CFC ate over a million molecules of useful ozone. But up until then boy or boy lead was used in everything from paint to toothpaste and CFC's were just cool.
Then the guy started to deteriorate because he too got lead poisoning.
Then the same guy that invented Chlorofluorocarbons and lead Additives got POLIO.
Then, the same guy that invented CFC's and lead Additives invented a machine that would turn him over from time to time and do a form of physical therapy on his now frail body that no longer worked. One day, the guy pushed the button to turn himself over and the machine started to work but one of the cables came loose and wrapped around the torso of the inventor and then wrapped around his neck and around his arms and legs and slowly oh so slowly tore him apart limb from limb. It took 4 hours for him to die.
This is a true story and it only goes to show that man made chemicals might seem wonderful, up until they start killing everyone.
Can you imagine no Ozone or if the lead additives had been incorporated in more products………..
I hate to say it but Thomas Midgely Jr, make evil chemical products and then got what he deserved. Be very careful what you invent, chemicals do weird things when mixed in new ways, things that might take decades or eons to find out they killed off the human race. But by then, nobody will care.
there ya go vlscpa…………now you're gettin' up'ta speed, ………..ROMANTIC AGRARIANISM ……………..
the Regime envisions you walking barefoot in the cool brown soil between the tall shady rows of
veggies, weeding, picking off bugs and worms by hand, the warm sun on your shoulders. Don't
that sound romantical? I forgot to mention the heat and humidity, sticky, sweaty, stinky by noon,
too tired to eat lunch, hands sore and stained from handling the green plants and the brown dirt.
WAR ON CHEMICALS!!11!
Good gods, you are truly idiots.
Oh good Helldigger, so I'll need a crew of at least 50 to weed my 2K acres of corn all summer.
Bring 49 able bodied folks who are in good physical condition with you. They will need to be able
to work at least 12 hours a day, waking, bending and hoeing weeds, while walking in lose soil.
Bring your own water and lunch, I will furnish a port-a-potty. The pay is minimum wage, BTW.
Ths. Midgely was NOT evil, he was a genius. Scientists often don't know the long-term effects of
their inventions and for you to say he deserved to die as he did, tells me you have a sick twisted mind.
Awesome post! You should TWI more often. (lol)
From everything I've witnessed, and after reading your common sense, fact filled piece, it's seems the Hussein regime's intent is for us to eventually subsist on "Soylent Green".
I'm just glad I have people in country and deep woods.
you could even find products that told you to add dhm, and drink this poisonous substance. it might be worse than smoking, and you can still find restaurants where the openly serve this stuff with you meal, outrageous!
them thar kuntry kuzins may danged well come in handy, HUH ?……WW
You could call it a small tribe… but yeah.
Im with you there buddy, we need to drop this pointless destructive agentcy now.
Only thing is, there are hundreds of agentcies that need to be shut down before they ruin our great country anymore. And the EPA has to be the first to go.
Thomas Midgely Jr didn't invent anything else except things that were terribly bad for the environment and killed or maimed people slowly. If CFC's had not been banned the Ozone layer might already be gone. As it is, the CFC's that are very hardy, may last longer than it takes for them to eat away at the rest of the Ozone until it is gone from the planet. Then the protection we all need and enjoy will be gone and toxins that will cause cancers and diseases untold, will be unleashed upon us all.
If that isn't evil then nothing else is.
This guy had no other claim to fame.
If anybody deserved to die a slow painful death for the man made chemical evil they wrought on the human race, it is Thomas Midgely Jr. The next most deserving are those who would exalt his deeds to genius status.
As for your Corn, I have grown many acres without chemical pesticides and fertilizers using only organic material instead and have good yields without disease. if you need 50 people to do your weeding, you need a new crop and a new location or you should get a new job.
C'mon ya whackos-it's only harmful if you INHALE it.
Reminds me of all of the drug commercials we see on TV nowadays. Where they list all of these side affects you may get if you use the drug, like headaches, diarrhea, nosebleeds, dizziness, death and…well you get the picture.
Why oh why oh WHY does Obama comment on everything except the serious things? Did he read the report? Does anyone still believe that anything he says is factual?
Nice Avi GaltFan!
An analysis of the results of The Women's Health Initiative (WHI) trials of HT:
"The main message of the WHI trials is not that women who have taken HT are at great risk of
these diseases: they are at only slightly increased risk. Even before the WHI trials began, the risk
of breast cancer was recognized and considered to be an acceptable level. The point of the trials
is that HT should not be prescribed to prevent heart disease."

Hormones are not carcinogens.
Thank you for a sane and correct assessment of cancer!
Cancer risk goes up for everyone after age 50, BECAUSE of the body's degradation in the aging process.
I have been reading Big Government since it began, becoming increasingly upset by the articles. However, NOTHING compares to this to my horror.
I spent 30 years as an agricultural field research scientist, working for two of the largest chemical companies in the world generating registration information for the EPA. I lived through the loss of Alar and 2,4,5 T, an ingredient in 'agent orange' due to 'junk science' and alarmism. These were safe.
Fortunately the Ag Chem companies developed other products to fill the void, but at higher cost.
The reason the US is the greatest nation in the world, is due to agricultural machinery and agricultural chemicals. It allows for huge food production by a small minority of the population! FOOD!
If you start messing with extensive crop herbicides, like atrazine or insecticides to control corn rootworm, you are flirting with massive crop failures.
Starvation ain't pretty. These products have not only been researched for years, they been USED for years at 'low impact' or no impact human health.
It CAN get worse!
This is just another form of control. Ban Atrazine > chemical manufacturers lay off employees due to ban > unemployment continues to rise > farmers have reduced crop yields > farmers go out of business > unemployment continues to rise > farmers and laid off manufacturer employees get on public assistance to support their families > laid off employees and farmers vote for democrats who will continue entitlement programs > food prices continue to rise > raise entitlement payments to offset rising food prices > well you get the picture…………..
THE SKY IS FALLING! Again?
This is getting to be like a bizarre cross of the children's stories "Chicken Little", "The Boy Who Cried Wolf!" and "The Wizard of Oz."
If someone wants to get rich just build a shrine where all these ninnies can come and worry, a "Worry Shrine." Put a "Worry Rock" in the center so all the believers can come and hug it, kiss it, polish it, or whatever.
Now this is the important part… the concessions can sell "Worry Tee-shirts" (hemp?), "Worry Seeds" (hemp?), "Worry Mats" (hemp?), small "Worry Rocks" with a polishing cloth and etc.
You will make a fortune (can you say AlGore?) and perhaps GET SOME OF THESE JACKASSES OUT OF OUR HAIR.

Saw my first TV commercial pushing the Romantic Agrarian concept this morning. It went just
as I expected, a 30ish woman, her hair wafting in the breeze, wearing a lose dress while she
sashayed through her garden checking her veggies. They called it "HOME FARMING" .
The product was not familiar to me. I think it was a seed company. Whadayawanna bet they re-
ceived a Gvt grant or 'incentive' for that damn thing. The brainwashing has officially begun.
FIGHT on PATRIOTS ! ! !
digger, you "have grown many acres without chemical pesticides", BUT the bigger question IS,
CAN YOU FEED A NATION OF 280 MILLION USING YOUR METHOD, RELIABLY YEAR AFTER
YEAR WITH NO SHORTAGES AND NO DISRUPTIONS ?
The answer is NO, you can't.
ECE, I was hoping you would show up to comment, please briefly outline the expense and trials
companies must endure to continue to provide these products to farmers.
This Regime has no earthly idea how serious the impact of their 'feel good' environmentalism can be.
Absolutely NO IDEA.
Are they striving to replicate the Central Valley / CA, water shortage, nationwide, by another method,
banning of agri-chemicals? This Regime is OFF THE RAILS , insane if they think we can feed 280
million folks with no herbicides or insecticides.
Your response is Total Crap! Cite any credible science which supports ANYTHING you are stating. I DO Check! How in hell do you think this country, in this century got to where we are economically.
Answer: Only 5% of our population were engaged in producing what we EAT! Heck of a Deal!
Are you prepared to produce your own food? A couple of corn or wheat crop failures might change your mind, but might be too late!
You obviously take your food for granted! Even your examples are crappy and don't make your point. There are MUCH better examples of great chemicals… The chemical which killed 7 million Jewish, Gay, and other 'inferior' people was an Insecticide produced (in part) by BASF. Pretty effective!
While you are at it. why not ban all organophosphate and carbamate insecticides! They are EXTREMELY deadly to humans!
What a problem for We the People! Die from poison or die from starvation! (smile). Our politicians KNOW the Answer, without even reading!
Just ask if he can feed himself.
I don't have thousands of acres.
but… I can supply my immediate family and most of my neighbors with supplementary vegetables and fruit.
I live in Arizona, so there are 2 growing seasons.
Can I do it every year? So far.
Do I use chemicals? NO, I am all organic.
I don't expect everyone to grow their own food, but then again I don't expect most people would survive massive starvation if a catastrophe hit the farming industry.
When the Nanny state falls, so will a great many people that have been sucking off the Government teat who are totally dependent upon them for their very existence.
Chemicals can be a god send, or as the world found out the hard way from Thomas Midgely, they can kill off the entire population in some circumstances.
Is that genetically altered corn we all eat really good food? Or does it contain DNA which will render human brains useless in the next generations?
Hmmmmmmm
fantum LOVE IT! Great cross post!

KOOL-AID MUCH ?……….Helldigger
How much actual corn do average Americans eat? You know corn isn't even a very healthy
food source. Moderation is the mantra.
Most of the corn Americans consume is processed through a bovine steak factory. Do I care
if the steer I plan on consuming has a brain? Not really, so long as he can chew, drink and
crap, the function of his brain is of little consequence to me.
Ya, don't drink the Kool-aid ……. eat beef instead.
It is obvious that you live by your comment that the function of the brain is of little consequence to you.
I say use Agent Orange on Congress and the Senate. And don't miss the White House.
How about a real chemical scare? Consider the quantity and variety of drugs passing through human waste and urine into the sewers and through the sewage plants. These chemicals are not filtered out and reenter the environment. This is the real area where study and analysis need be performed.
