The conservative website Newsmax was to host the debate Dec. 27.
But the debate has been in jeopardy ever since Mitt Romney signaled he would not participate. Other candidates bowed out. Only Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum agreed to take part.
Many Republican strategists warned that a presidential debate moderated by Trump, star of “Celebrity Apprentice,” would create a circus-like atmosphere that might diminish the candidates vying to challenge Obama.

I hope that Trump sticks with his real estate and TV show. If he runs as an independent all he will do is help Obama. It will be H. Ross Perot 2.0. I think the maybe I'll run for president myself talk is purely a face-saving tactic. If he had gone forward with only two candidates showing up it would be fairly embarrassing. As everyone knows, Trump is always about self promotion and a high-profile black eye makes it hard to continue the constant I'm #1 rhetoric.
So, we are going to have Huntsman, Johnson, Paul, and Trump all running as "3rd party" candidates if the primary doesn't go their way.

The Donald is a self-promoting, pretentious, arrogant blowhard. That being said, Trump is also an American success story. I'd never vote for the guy, but it really bugs me when people who have accomplished a whole lot less than Trump ridicule him for agreeing to moderate a debate. Maybe it was his idea all along, maybe it wasn't, but it doesn't matter.
Look: This country elected the single most unqualified person EVER to be president. Chelsea Clinton got a primo gig at MSNBC simply because her parents are celebrity Democrats. Congress has an approval rating that doesn't even approach the low TEENS.
And yet some have the gall to say that Trump, arguably one of the most successful and influential businessmen in modern American history, somehow is unqualified to moderate a debate on TV? That makes absolutely no sense to me. If the other GOP contenders had opted to join the debate, it would have been the most-watched debate in TV history, simply because The Donald was moderating. The conservative message would have been beamed straight into the homes of millions of Americans who tuned in just to watch The Donald fail and make a fool of himself.
Whether the debate would have been a failure or not isn't the point. What matters is that the nominees missed out on a opportunity to get the conservative message out to a lot of people.
This effing ass-clown simply needs to disappear for the 11 months. It's going to be hard enough for the GOP to win back the White House. Trump's antics and mucking about isn't helping matters.

He would be worse than Obozo as president of this great nation. No thank you! If he does run as an Independent, (and I really don't think he will) he is going to be totally humiliated. You make a good point. I don't know that I've ever seen a president as reviled as Obama seems to be. He is the most polarizing president I have ever seen and I say that even with the fact that so many people hated G.W. Bush. Trump does worry me though.

Your not going to like this, but I think the Donald would make a pretty decent president. I have listened to him and agree with just about everything he has said, especially about China taking advantage of us, starting to make products in the USA again, charging China for bringing in their cheap azz goods here. I think a businessman, not a lawmaker should have a shot at the presidency. His foreign policy however, I know nothing about. Hell, anyone has to be better than what we have now and Donald seems like he won't take chit off of anyone. I kinda like that in a president.

As I look and listen to him, I am more and more I'm finding a distrust. e.g., On Obama's BC, at first Trump charged hard, then after Barry presented a forgery, instead of following up, the Donald disappeared leaving the forgery as being the real deal. It was though it was planned.
