Breaking: Judge Approves Black Farmers Settlement
by PubliusWASHINGTON (AP) – A federal judge has given final approval to a $1.2 billion government settlement with black farmers who claim they were unfairly denied loans and other assistance from the Agriculture Department over many years.
Federal judge Paul Friedman approved the settlement late Thursday. He said it will likely take about a year for neutral parties to review claims and then all of the settlements will be paid out at once.
This is the second round of settlements in the 1999 case known as the Pigford case, after the original plaintiff, North Carolina farmer Timothy Pigford. The settlement is directed at farmers who were denied payments in the first round because they missed deadlines for filing.
Congress passed the settlement last year.

Several inner city Detriot ladies who I know well, all applied for these funds. The closet thing they got to farming was the Tomato plant in the back yard.
No doubt that there are deserving farmers. Unfortunately, the probability is that a considerable number are not.
Who are the "neutral parties"and why am I thinkin' that they are not really neutral?
And how many of these claims that they farmed have been verified?

None have and none will. They need to charge those who did not farm with fraud and see how many applications get withdrawn. I doubt that will happen though.

Perhaps give much more of the $$$$ to those that really were Black farmers who actually were treated poorly by the
US Govmint but why give to so many who falsified claims? That's what burns many of us. I had no problem with the settlement if it had not gotten out of hand and turned into a watering trough by the lawyers. If more than half of the claimants are falsifying records ( and that is what has been suggested by numerous accounts), in order to tag along and get theirs, that's where I have a problem.
What do you expect when 95% of Federal judges aren't picked by the people but by whoever the STATIST-in-Chief at the moment is.
Don't forget, Dems believe government is infallible and wouldn't ever allow itself to be scammed by sleazy, opportunistic lawyers.

Please keep the light on this. I think that there a lot more Pigford type slush funds out there. When Sec of Agriculture, Vilsack, gave a press conference on this, he went on about protecting the black farmers but never one word about balancing this with the protection of the taxpayers.
Theft of taxpayer money, pure and simple. What country are we living in? I just don't recognize it any more.

USDA…… employees, administration across the board and in every single case were found to have committed discrimination on such a large scale as to deem it necessary to PAY out to any and all people of color a once (or twice) in a lifetime 50,000.00 or more settlement to ease their pain and suffering cause they weren't given loans guaranteed by the government?
I AS A TAXPAYER WANT TO KNOW ………..WHO AT THE USDA DID THIS DISCRIMINATION? Are they still employed? Was the discrimination concentrated in a particular office? What kind of kickbacks did they receive for the scheme? Did anyone bother to check to see if in fact the person(s) applying for these loans actually even owned property or had any kind of collateral to receive a loan in the first place?
USDA is a department that needs to be thoroughly disassembled!

This second settlement is just a huge fraud and a boon to the lawyers who will file claims on behalf of people who claim they tried to farm but have never picked up a shovel in their life. It has already been shown that there were more claims on the first settlement then their were actual black farmers during the time of the unfair treatment
Allen West can look at himself in the mirror and know that the taxpayers will not forgive this vote okaying the Pigford fraud to go forward.
