by PubliusToday, in 1805, Vice-Admiral Lord Nelson defeated a combined French and Spanish fleet at the Battle of Trafalgar. It ended Napoleon’s dreams of maritime dominance and reinforced Britain’s status as a naval power.

This is pretty comical

The late great Britain I remember her well.
Farewell!
Hey look! An armadillo!
we have a modern day Napoleon currently occupying the White House,he would just love to crown himself Emperor
He may have already crowned himself Emperor, but it's being kept under wraps til the time is right….lol
Yup, she used to be a hell of a country, before she became Socialist, and died.
Somewhat off-topic but related:
I'm a big fan of David Webber's "Honor Harrington" sci-fi series. It's his homage to the age of wooden ships and iron men, but set in a science fiction milieu. The Battles between France and England are mirrored in the series. It is interesting to parallel historical battles in fictional novels, as the author has done. The Fictional Battle of Manticore is the parallel to the Battle of Trafalgar. The "Star Kingdom of Manticore" parallels England, while "The People's Republic of Haven" parallels France. The books are an interesting read, and if anyone likes a good naval adventure novel, these stories by David Webber I recommend heartily.
He has a little coronation ceremony every morning before he enters the Oval Office.
I proudly salute a brave and gallant ally. Tony Blair was the first world leader to call President Bush after 9/11 and the first to stand by his side offering whatever assistance the United Kingdom could give.
That assistance is still going on today. Before you comment on the UK being a faded power you should look at the photos of funeral processions of British soldiers, sailors, marines and airmen going through the streets of Wootton Bassett near RAF Lyneham for the last 10 years, or now RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire. Those quaint British, that faded power still know how to extend an unbelievable showing of dignity, respect, honor and grief for their fallen heroes. And if you like to cry, look at the families, especially the children or a wife and mother with a baby in her arms walking behind the hearst carrying the soldier/father/husband in his Union Jack draped casket.
I hate our Dear Leader as much as any thinking conservative, but for a moment lets forget about him, not make jokes and instead say a simple thanks to a solid ally and look back on a simpler time when it was the might of the British Navy and Army that kept the peace in this crazy world.
Then: The Red Coats are coming, The Red Coats are coming!
Now: The Commie Libs are coming!, The Commie Libs are coming!
P.s. Don't shoot until you see their "Red Eyes", from all the partying!
Would be even funnier if they weren't so accurate.
Just finished reading "After America" by Mark Steyn. If you want some perspective how far the once great England has fallen, you only need to read one chapter. The New Brittania.
I've always wanted to visit England and have read English history for a long time and that chapter nearly brought tears to my eyes. Not a top vacation spot for me anymore unless I can bring my .45
The Brits have always been a great ally. /Salute
Don't shoot until you smell the stench of their bodies.
I always thought this was a ballsy fight: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Glowworm_%28H92%...
The HMS Glowworm v. German cruiser Admiral Hipper.
Glowworm was outclassed so elected to ram.
I pay attention to what is happening around me.
“We Are Ohio” is made up of organizations that have given their full endorsement to a movement that seeks to overthrow the entire American economy, by violent means, if necessary."
I wonder.
I wonder when the day will come, here in America, when we will see the President of the United States drug from a culvert, and given the Ghadaffi Treatment? I do not know if I will live to see it in my time, but unless things are brought under control, and done so quickly, it is just over the horizon.
Mob rule is not the way to go.
Mob rule brought the Bolsheviks to power, and Mao, and Hitler, and Saddam Hussein, and Muhamar Ghadaffi.
America deserves better.
"England expects that every man will do his duty."
A very matter-of-fact, low-key — very English — general order/rallying cry — it worked.
and gasoline was 24 cents a gallon.
I agree that America deserves better, but we won't get better until the schools and colleges are fumigated against the Socialists, Communists and Marxists….That goes for the MSM too….We have too many people that don't love this great country, and are only here to drain us dry….I never thought I would see what is going on….I find it frightening…(Not just the morons in the OWS groups), but it seems like we are going to h— in a hand basket, and every day gets worse, not better……I wish I could see some sunshine soon…Getting tired of the clouds blocking the sun out………..
Publius, you left out just a teency weency detail, which is that Nelson died, thus cementing his status as one of all-time Britain's greatest heroes. Time has not diminished his near demi-god status, the greatest admiral of the greatest Navy of the greatest maritime nation in the world.
Oh, and it wasn't that Britain was "a naval power," it was "the naval power," a position occupied for the past several decades by the United States, but occupied by the Brits for over a century.
You mention Nelson.
Fast forward about one hundred years.
There was another Admiral of the British Navy.
He fought tooth and nail to drag Britain into the new era.
His accomplishment?
He got the British Navy to switch from coal fired boilers, to oil.
That man?
Sir Winston Churchill.
Long before he was Prime Minister.
A true story of honor at sea. Many think that WWI was the death of honor, but I've read many accounts of how the German navy still clung to the old ways, as did the British, throughout WWII.
My rifle doesn't have that kind of range, anything past 400 yards is iffy; I can smell those hippies from here!
How about… don't shoot until you see the flies flying around the zombie horde.
Take heart.
Evert generation must have a Jimmah Carter, to pave the way for the next Ronald Reagan.
(The only down side is, I don't see a Reagan on the horizon.)
Thanks, I'm checking it out, maybe the old ball and chain can find it for me at the library.
Don't forget Admiral Jack Fischer–who fought hard to creat the worlds first modern Nay…ultimately fired by Winston. Those were amazing times for Great Britain and the world.
Yes.
They were giants among men.
No look at what we have……..
Except he's really only Napoleon III. May his Sedan come soon!
Well, Churchill was never an admiral nor a sailor – his brief military service was as a cavalryman – but rather First Lord of the Admiralty, the equivalent of Secretary of the Navy.
Jacky Fisher: "Fear God and dread nought."
A great man in a time that needed that greatness, to be sure.
That is what I was referring to.
His military service is not to be discounted.
As a cavalryman, he graduated 8th in a class of 150.
He was considered reckless, and too daring.
He joined the Cavalry, because the bar was lower. He hated math, and had a speech impediment.
You're right, I take it back. I get as confused about their politics and policies as I'm sure they are about ours.
…..
…..
……
Wait, I'm confused about our politics and policies too.
Absolutely right though, they are to be commended to being the last country to stand with us on the war on terror, in Afgahnatan and Iraq.
You got something against "Red Eye" buddy? Greg Gutfeld had a Gregalogue this week! I sure was missing my Gregalogues!
Ronald Reagan had to "grow" into the great man he was. Wasn't he a liberal democrat in his hollyweird days? I betchya God is preparing someone very special for our future. Americas best days are ahead of her.
You betchya!
I'm hoping God is preparing someone.
Everyone, on the current list, men, and women, are not very impressive.
The liberal Media is going to once again be able to select our candidate this term. Not as many leaning conservative are aware of this phenomenon as we would suppose, or hope. There are still many who would vote with us who are still so indifferent about politics as still be able to be lead by the media's interloping. Hopefully that will turn around soon. Meanwhile, our "King Maker" is still coming into her own. She's going to grow in her fan base as the politics gets crazier.

"The time is near at hand which must determine whether Americans are to be free men or slaves."
George Washington
Nitpick: David Weber.
Yeah, it's a good read.
Alas, I think we're going for the "People's Republic of Haven" path. :-/
