Obama Speech Open Thread
by PubliusTonight, after weeks of teasing, President Obama is set to announce his plan to turn around the economy. Yes, he had two years with a Democrat Congress to do it…but he apparently really means it this time.
Of course, he might just be focused now because he has to go through the trouble of getting reelected. In the minutes before he will talk incessantly about bi-partisanship, he sent this email to his supporters:
I’m about to head to the Capitol to ask Congress to act on my plan to put Americans back to work.
Before I do, I wanted to write you directly to remind you that the fight to create jobs — and provide the kind of economic security for middle-class families that’s been slipping away over the last decade — won’t begin or end with the speech I give tonight.
What happens will be up to you. In the coming days and weeks, it will be up to you to pressure Congress to act — or hold them accountable if they do not.
If you’re with me, let me know. And the campaign will make sure you are looped into our efforts to support this plan.

Does anybody realize that when there is a payroll tax cut they don't really cut your taxes? They just take less so they don't have to give you anything back.

Does anybody remember the last time the opposition party dissed any presidential speech – let alone an address to a joint session of Congress – by not reacting to it with an immediate counter-speech? I sure can't. Nothing says "you're not worth the bother" quite like "no comment."
I am sure he is going to mention a huge stimulus package. It is time for the GOP to get behind this idea. The Troops need a raise. We need to increase the size of the Military so the National Guard and Reserves can stay home and be the National Guard and the Reserves and not be frontline combat troops. This would help reduce the unemployment rate in the 18-22 age group and teach them how to work in a team and how to show up for work in the morning.
The GOP needs to stop letting Obama say that we need to reduce the military in order to reduce spending and then turn right around and use stimulus funds that pay off political contributers.

Serious question: Does a "payroll tax cut" mean that the tax withheld from my paycheck will decrease, but I still owe the taxes at the end of the year, or does it mean that it an actual tax cut, that I will be sending a lower percentage of my pay to D.C.?

Speaking of collective bargaining rights: I live in a very blue county in a very blue state. Today as I was leaving the grocery store someone approached me with a petition. "The county council wants to take away the policemen's collective bargaining rights! Sign here!" I was so happy to tell her that I thought that was great and I still can't believe that the county council, which is all Dems, would even consider limiting the collective bargaining rights of the police union. County finances must be worse than I thought.
