Tuesday Open Thread: Lawrence of Arabia Edition
by PubliusToday, in 1888, T.E. Lawrence was born. He would become ‘Lawrence of Arabia.’ It would take a Westerner to put the Arabs at their closest to independence. Sadly, the Arabs flubbed it.

In light of recent investigative reports from the Daily Caller that reveal close coordination between Media Matters for America and the White House, BigJournalism and BigGovernment have undertaken the task of revisiting some of our prior reporting on the media watchdog group and our list of its donors. And yet western countries still think they can drag these camel-bonkers out of the 7th century.
Lawrence of Arabia, what a tool.
Babe Ruth (1948 53yo), and Elvis Presely (1977 42yo) both died on this date. (16 August)…………and i think they both could have kicked Lawrence of Arabia's assss.
Love the dagger.
yes it is cool…………………it's called a jambiya.
Your not suppose to remove it from the sheath, unless your going to "use it".
And i don't mean for peeling an apple……………
Lawrence probably used his…………………….. to stir a cup of tea.
8^)
___"’ It would take a Westerner to put the Arabs at their closest to independence."______
So you are trying to tell me Islamophobic, Racist ,TEABaggers have been around that long ?
Damn !
Someone should tell Harry Reid ! http://michellemalkin.com/2011/08/14/harry-reid-y...
Huh, I don't how many times Persia could have set themselves free just by being a people true to themselves and not attempt to "convert the world, or make them submit"…
Anyhow, I thought Ahab the Arab also shared that distinction, until I listened to the song through- I guess not…

Wikipedia has a crazy amount of information on Laurance- but my interest- is the religious influence on the Ottoman/Arab war over Turkey. Widipedia doesn't mention. Was that muslim vs muslim? Were Arabian countrys that vested into Islam before that or was this the big turning point for them?
We need a "Lawrence of America" to lead us back to Freedom…
Before it is too late!
I can imagine the Howling in England from the Ragheads if Lawrence dared wear that outfit today LOL. All the whining about an insult to their culture etc. And the way England is now Lawrence would probably be hauled into court on some kind of PC charge.
"Lawrence
Lawrence of Arabia
He was an English guy
He came to fight the Turkish…"
At the risk of Tuesday hubris turning into Wednesday nemesis, best wishes to the Republicans running in the recall elections today. RESIST WE MUCH!!!
WE don't need the Arabs for anything! Trying to be friends with someone that hates everything about you is beyond ridiculous!!!!
The movie of course was good.
But it was a movie.
The reality is Lawrence makes me think of John of Taliban (Lindh).
Here is a nice snippet from Wiki;
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Walker_Lindh
"Sometime during the initial uprising Lindh was shot in the right upper thigh and found refuge in a basement, hiding with a group of Saudi, Uzbek, and Pakistani detainees. On the second day, the Red Cross sent in workers to provide treatment to the wounded and try to get them to surrender. As soon as they entered, they were murdered by those inside."
Ahh the brave warriors of Allah. Spit.
Every warrior class though out history has said the same about their weapon. After spending years in the martial arts, I asked one of the Elder Sensei, "If you can never remove your Katana from its sheath unless you intend to draw blood, how do you clean it and sharpen it after having used it?"
Being the smart @$$ that the old guy was, he answered me very honestly. He said "I let my wife of many years draw the sword from its sheath, she can't handle a butter knife without cutting herself."
Hmnn.
Someone tell GWB.

And today,….
the last survivor of the Bataan Death March died at the age of 105…….
thus, closing a horrible chapter in Japan's history.
Did not get the soldier's name so if anyone knows it,..please post it.
I trust his wife wasn't in ear shot…. Otherwise there might be blood drawn without a weapon at all…
Albert Brown
Thanks for posting that Ralph, now Albert Brown was a man worthy of an Open Thread in his name…
Larry of Arabia, Uhhh,… I'm not quite sure why we keep having him for a topic of discussion once a year,,,
The movie, not sure how historically accurate it is, is fantastic.
Bu bu but… it was such a beautiful movie, with all those exotic Arabic locales and those mean-looking bearded guys with the fancy daggers… !!!
Question for the Helens here, with such an important election today in Wisconsin and Comrade slithering around the mid-west why no get out the vote rallies in the dairy state?
Note to dairy state voters, vote out the Dems that ran rather than fight , thank God these chickens weren't in a fox hole next to me back in the day.
"The Arabs? What Tribe is that?"………….
The "Throat-Slitter" Tribe, I think…
HT! : )
Obviously it's designed for dagging around corners.
That said, how DO you get it out of its sheath?
When I lived in Turkey, if you wanted to insult someone you called him an Arab. The Turks consider themselves vastly different from Arabs, even if both are Muslims.
T.E. Lawrence didn't want any fame from what he did in Arabia. In fact he tried to disappear. He changed his name and enlisted in the RAF as a lowly enlisted mechanic. He was riding his motorcycle one day and came up over a hill at high speed and found himself staring at a couple of kids on bicycles right in front of him. He dumped the bike to miss the kids but suffered fatal injuries in the crash.
He was the oldest survivor, not the last.
This'll show you everything you need to know. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YhBIPZCVj84
Do you think that was because he came to realize his romanticized notion of Arabs turned out to be just that, Fiddle? That he came to know Arabs as nothing but a bunch of self centered, tribal bullies who would slit your throat or make you a slave at the drop of a hat?
I often think Larry was one of the first victims of PC thought, that everyone should think there is good in each and every one of us. It just needs to be drawn out with understanding and kind words.
Bahhh! You'll be dead first!
Screw that…I don't need anyone to lead me to be free…
Now, if you want me to join with others to wage war against tyranny…I am your huckleberry…
The boy-king's appearance would rally the enemy…decent, hard-working folks that really make the country work…
Can't have that…
The TEA Movement folks that DO show up flummox President Downgrade so bad his poor, meager brain cells lock up…
I think we'll be pleasantly surprised and heartened this evening…
If both DIMocRATS go down…they'll have spent all the money for ZERO result…just a re-arrange of the deck chairs on the sinking S.S. Socialist…
Amused, I'll be….
Yeah, they are ALL guilty of bowing down to dictator towel heads!
WE THE PEOPLE will lead us back to Freedom. It's not to say that we can't use a leader of sorts, but we have to stop waiting for a savior (for some, the Savior already came) and just pull ourselves up by our bootstraps and get the work done.
Me, too.
"SHOTGUN…!!!"
Ha…beat you to it…!
*chortle*
I'll take the 50 cal.
;-D
As long as its a co-axial…you really don't want to be standing up out there…
Unless you got the ammo…and want to "recon by fire" when looking for snipers…
*snicker*
I'd take a light armored recon vehicle…with a minigun…
THAT is some impressive on the high rate…
Mjolnir,
If you read my past posts, you might recall I personally don't need a leader to make me free either.
But our nation, in a metaphor of a person, DOES need a leader to rise up and take charge. Weneed someone to disperse the smoke and expose the mirrors of the ObaMao proglodyte side.
That is all I was saying.
And if we are defending this nation, I've done it before, and will happily do it again. I'm ALL IN!
Maybe we're talking cross-semantics here, friend…
To me, at this point in life, I have found that if I were to wait for a person to lead over anything, I have given that person far, far too much power over me…
What should I do if the next President is a Republican "poopy-head"…?
Or we get Obama, part Deux…?
Or any of 1,000 possible outcomes…?
If people in power reflect my viewpoints and actions, Thank the Lord…but I am not gonna sit on my DIMocRAT and pine away if they don't…this troop is moving up and pushing forward, despite any and all obstacles in my way…
This is America…I lead…
They wanna come…fine by me…
Well, that or you don't put it away while it is dirty.
Now I don't like using such a term truth be told. If a man wants to walk around with a tablecloth wrapped around his head then that is his business.
It's the kowtowing that we need to focus on.
The fact is, agree with him or disagree, he was a fascinating character.
I suppose in that respect my comparison to John (Lindh) of Taliban doesn't really work.
Looks like Wisconsin's horses went and ran back into the burning barn…
Good luck to 'em…I ain't gonna bail 'em out…
