Tuesday Open Thread: Pawlenty Edition
by PubliusFormer Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty has entered the race for President. He has promised to go to Iowa and argue against farm subsidies. Color us at least a bit impressed. This is the first real test of the Tea Party. There is neither an economic nor constitutional defense of the subsidies. But, many tea party supporters are drawn from folks who benefit from these subsidies. Curious how this plays out.

Dr. Ron Paul has voted against farm subsidies for years.
Don't just focus on ending government subsidies for one particular industry; focus on ending them ALL (farm, oil, renewable energy, etc). The Federal government has no business meddling in private industry to begin with. If an idea is truly practical and profitable, then the private sector won't hesitate to jump on the bandwagon by themselves, and without the need for the government to lure them in with taxpayer dollars.
focus on ending them ALL
Absolutely.
Good for Pawlenty. I come from farm country and I'd support getting rid of the farm subsidies. I think that we should lose most, if not all subsidies. I'll have to do some research on Pawlenty; he sounds good so far.
Yes!
Good. Why is your rating so low? Have you been hanging out at lefty sites? Don't you know you could catch something nasty there?
I don't know, guess I have controversial opinions…lol. I'm not sure how the rating is given.
Willie Nelson must be spinning in his grave.
…oh, he's not dead yet? Then he must be spinning in his tour bus.
If enough people give you either thumbs down or thumbs up it is reflected in your overall score. Personally I don't think much the of system. My own rating has jumped and dived several times with no rhyme or reason. I myself rarely use the thumbs down option, saving it for nasty types who post bigoted comments.
I'm still waiting to see who hangs in there…
Your thumb will be sore by election time.
Thanks, I don't think I have posted any nasty or bigoted comments so I will take ratings with a grain of salt.
Don't forget the Departments
Education
Transportation
Labor
Public Welfare
Motor Vehicles
Commerce
State
and on and on……………
lol,…He, he
- 1883, the Brooklyn Bridge, linking Brooklyn and Manhattan, was dedicated by President Chester Arthur and New York Gov. Grover Cleveland, and opened to traffic.
- 1935, the first night game in major league history was played, as the hometown Cincinnati Reds beat the Philadelphia Phillies 2-1.
- 1941, the German battleship Bismarck sank the British dreadnought HMS Hood in the North Atlantic, killing all but three of the 1,418 men on board.
- 1961, a group of Freedom Riders was arrested after arriving at a bus terminal in Jackson, Miss., charged with breaching the peace for entering white-designated areas. (They served 60 days in jail.)
Pawlenty is one I need to learn more about. Hopefully he is in favor of eliminating all subsidies. That would be a good start, as would the FairTax which eliminates all tax loopholes and "incentives."
I agree with all you folks regarding ending all gov't subsidies. Let's definitely start with ethanol which is evil. It's bad for your engines, bad for your wallet, bad for food supplies. Get rid of the crap yesterday.
Nah he's spining another joint.
I was also wondering about yoru low score…I wonder if the scores have anything to with the amount of posts/amount of reaction to post.
Interestingly enough, as a child Grover Cleveland lived little more than 2 miles from where I sit.
Dr. Paul will free us all, in 2012
I think it came from debating foreign policy. Being a non-interventionist does not seem to be popular.
I thumb you up all the time – I appreciate you supporting RP. I'm sure that accounts for the thumbs down you get. I don't downgrade anyone for honestly criticizing the good doctor for his stands, but when they slur him with juvenile insults and their lies…. That's a good attitude to have regarding your score; far too many people seem to validate their self-worth by it.
Not sure how the algorithm for the points works, but it looks to me like it's weighted far more towards the number of posts rather than thumbs up; in fact, I suspect a thumbs down counts more towards a negative score than a thumbs up does towards positive one.
I thumbed up everyone in this thread, btw. Please, please thumb me up! If I'm in the minus side, I'll toss and turn tonight, worrying about it….for, oh, two or three seconds. <grin>
I agree, Dr Paul has my vote.
Thanks, I had never notice the score before HH mentioned it because I am pretty new at this. I believe it came from debating foreign policy and the blowback phenomena. But I now give thumbs up to all also….lol
Pawlenty sounds like something you buy in a health food store.
like really numb and falling off…..lol. 8^)
And if he does not get the nomination who shall you support? Don't get me wrong, I am not opposed to Paul as we have had such great success during my adult life that perhaps it is time to do things differently. His foreign stance troubles me a bit.
I'll be voting for a Libertarian one way or another this time around.
From what I can gather right now with a minus 47, if you get 47 thumbs up you jump to minus 46, in my case plus 98 I need 98 thumbs up to go to plus 99. it's a screwy system, I once really blasted a bunch of trolls and lost 6 points in the process.
I truely believe he will get the nomination. If people are honest with themselves they will relize he is the only canidate with consistant principles and enough honesty to tell us the truth. He cannot be bought and he wants to take the power away from DC and give it back to the people. Even his foreign policy makes sense if only from an economic view, we can not afford what we are doing. So I think he is a shoe-in and if not I will think about that when it happens.
Oh well, I think I will just ignore the rating and have a great time expressing myself. It is lots of fun!
Just be sure that you get palenty of Pawlenty when you do. Ouch that pun was so bad I oughta be ashamed.
Dr Paul is not really a libertarian, although he ran on the ticket in 1988. He is an old school republican, the news media like to brand him as a libertarian to influence republicans against him. Is like a subliminal message….he is nutty…he is dumb…he is a libertarian…he can't win. They do their best to marginalize him to try to keep people from considering his canidancy.
It was so bad, I gave you a thumbs up. I love bad puns, the badder the better.
You're right. Most people here think we actually have a right or need to stick our noses into other peoples affairs. They wonder why everyone hates us, yet support time after time, invasions of other countries, countless occupations and just plain rude behavior on our part as a country. Most also think that we can and should legislate morality, but that's a different story…
And those that call Ron Paul names, or call people who support him names are no better than those in power now. The funny thing too, is most people would support 95% of Ron Paul's positions if they just weren't Ron Paul's positions. Lots of people here are closet libertarians hiding behind a 'moral' conservative cloth. Take abortion and drugs out of the debate, and 98% of people are libertarian these days. They just choose not to admit it…
Yes, i'm into anything and everything American History. I was watching out my window the other day as the US Brig Niagra sailed around on Presque Isle Bay. It was cool…….
http://www.hnsa.org/ships/niagara.htm
Commander Oliver Hazard Perry ("We have met the enemy, and they are ours") took command of the US Lake Erie Naval Fleet right out there in March 0f 1813. Fought his way through a British blockade, and by the end of September he kicked the brits ass over near Put-in-Bay, Ohio. All good stuff.
I think of Ron Paul as an old school republican. The media call him a libertarian to keep people from considering voting for him in the republican primaries.
I am also tired of being the bully and policeman of the world.
Could I change your mind about splitting the vote if he doesn't get the nomination? I cannot handle another four of Obama and neither can the nation.
Also, anyone who couldn't support Ron Paul's foreign policy position on constitutional or moral grounds, should be able to support it on economic grounds. We just can not afford it and we need to take care of ourselves.
This is a great start, and a good test….Remember, aren't some paid Not To Plant?
Most are required to use "Mansanto Seeds" (?) Hybrid seeds that don't reproduce…so the farmers have to buy that, I think is the law. Anybody know?
What about the subsidies we gave to G.E.? Obama and friends gave them $2 Billion…and they made a huge profit, and didn't even need the subsidy.
And, the Czars, too. LOL
"But, many tea party supporters are drawn from folks who benefit from these subsidies."
Publius puts a lot of truth in that one line.
Through the years, I have lost many acquaintances in the ag industry, due to my stance on farm subsidies. Through the months here, I have lost some friends as well, for that same stance.
As someone in the ag business, I am against farm subsidies. That has never won me any friends.
In reality, farm subsidies, are nothing more than legal vote buying.
He's no Palin.
But he is clean, and speaks in a pretty convincing midwest dialect, when he wants to.
He could beat Obama.
Obama underwritten loans to George Soros, who invested in Petrobra (offshore oil drilling by Socialist Venezuela).
Then, made a Nat'l Statement to us, that Brazil wants to be our oil supplier, and we want to be their customer!
All the while stifling and muzzling our own production…
I really don't know how he could lose. If he gets the republican nod he will wipe the floor with Obama. He appeals to a broad range of people, the freedom message is popular with independents and even many democrates. Not to mentions constitutionalist and libertarians.
If Tea Party supporters benefit from subsidies and they are not willing to listen to a reasonable discussion about them, then they are no better than a union thug.
And from what I know, they harm small farmers more than help them.
I drive around my parents house in Michigan and see what used to be farms now covered in weeds. Sometimes, because people are paid not to farm.
Ok I could pull the lever for Pawlenty. Doesn't have me pumped though.
He seems to be the most well rounded of the candidates so far.
I believe that Dr. Paul considers himself to libertarian though.
i am a ron paul supporter. i think it is time for ron paul. however, there are too many sheeple in this country. tunnel vision sheeple.
"………But, many tea party supporters are drawn from folks who benefit from these subsidies……"
If you are going to comment on what the Tea Party is or isn't,……
learn about the Tea Party.
As a Tea Party member who is retired and on SS and Medicare A and B,………
I want these programs and everything else on the table and that my friend,……..
is how the vast majority of us feel.
I don't think he can beat Obama because I don't think independents will vote for him. He is just more of the same and a little late to the game of doing away with unconstitutional subsidies of any kind.
Dr Paul has won all his elections as a republican, he does not disagree that many of his positions are now considered libertarian but a true libertarian would not agree that Dr Paul is a full blown libertarian although they may agree he leans that way.
The numbers: $246.7 billion in subsidies 1995-2009
62 percent of farmers in United States did not collect subsidy payments – according to USDA.
Ten percent collected 74 percent of all subsidies, amounting to $157.7 billion over 15 years.
Top 10%: $29,658 average per year between 1995 and 2009.
Bottom 80%: $572 average per year between 1995 and 2009
EWG Farm Subsidy Database
As for Pawlenty, he just may become the Republican nominee but,….
sorry folks, as of right now, I will be going to the polls HAVING to vote for him,…..
and not WANTING to vote for him.
Unlike Sarah, Michelle, Herman, Rubio, Christie, McCotter,…….
I don't think this Timmy guy would last five minutes in a south side bar, but,…….
like all the others, let's see what the campaign does for this guy.
Because of his charisma and all the excitement Urkel brought in '08, the assumption is that we'll have to field an opponent who can compete on those terms.
Much has changed since 2008. People have had enough "excitement", I think. Many who voted for the messiah in 2008 are now ready for an adult to take the reins.
It will not be nearly as hard to beat this charlatan as the media have brainwashed people to believe.
People do want a constitutional change this time, not just a generic change. So I am working under the assumption that if we work really hard to get Ron Paul's constitutional fidelity in front of everyone we can win. The news media will not help us with this, they all try to marginalize him whenever possible, but I will go door to door if necessary. We can not afford to loose.
"Sometimes, because people are paid not to farm."
No.
A lot of times people are paid not to farm (or ranch).
Just take a look at the USDA "CRP" program, and you will be appalled.
I has a good friend, a childhood friend (we no longer are, because of this topic). I know for a fact he has received over a million dollars from the USDA for being a "government farmer" (or non-farmer, in his case).
I have a whole lot less than many of the successful farmers around.
But every mile of fence I ever built, every gate I ever hung, every well I ever drilled, was paid for 100% out of my pocket. Not Uncle Sams.
Why do I do this? Why am I obstinate and old fashioned?
It gives me the luxury, of having the option, to not so politely tell the government to get the hell off of my property. No county agents, no USDA reps, no BLM morons.
I just want left alone.
If every kid just read your "Open Thread" comments there chopper
they would have a PHD in history.
2012 RALLY CRY – “BACK TO THE FUTURE – BACK TO GROUND ZERO”!
~~~
PART I –
Does Governor Pawlenty have what it takes to get it done…in my opinion…NO!
The next President better do the following in order to get my vote…
1. DRILL baby…drill…and get us off foreign oil forever!
2. SECURE our borders as they should be!
3. FIX the immigration problems, once our borders are secure!
4. ASK for that 'original' birth certificate…to prove once and for all to “negate” each and everything he did and signed to take us back to ground zero.
5. STOP all funding to other countries UNTIL we get our own house in order!
6. BRING all troops home from fighting the internal wars of individual countries.
7. REALIZE that our space program is our ticket to defense power and prestige in the world/science and reinstate it to where it was and should be.
PART II –
8. STOP all entitlements to illegals!
9. THROW the UN out of America!
10. CUT THE SPENDING AND CUTBACK and start putting our own men/women to work IN America as it should be!
11. ENCOURAGE Americans to BUY America on items made IN America!
12. APPOINT Constitutionalist judges to enforce the laws of our land!
13. GRANT more states’ rights…as provided by our Constitution…and get out of State business!
14. REVAMP the immigration policies of America…by not allowing anyone from a terrorist nation to enter our shores and endanger our land!
15. DECLARE that Islam is not a religion and confine their activity in America!
A man that will take all the BFF's of the Chameleon N' Chief and throw them under the bus where they belong! A man/woman that will reinstate the status of our old time allies…who stood with us through the years!
~~~
ABSOLUTELY “NO” TO RAISING DEBT CEILING! RAISING IT WILL ONLY POSTPONE THE INEVITABLE…LET’S JUST GET IT OVER WITH AND CALL THEIR BLUFF!
http://www.usa.gov/Contact/Elected.shtml
Amen, preach it brother!
What I find most offensive are those people who accuse RP supporters of Alinksy tactics when in fact they're the ones using his rules for radicals. For example, I see these all the time:
* RULE 5: “Ridicule is man’s most potent weapon.”
* RULE 6: “A good tactic is one your people enjoy.”
* RULE 8: “Keep the pressure on. Never let up.”
* RULE 10: “If you push a negative hard enough, it will push through and become a positive.”
* RULE 12: Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, and polarize it.”
Too bad they they practice those, and don't understand this one:
* RULE 7: “A tactic that drags on too long becomes a drag.”
Don't know much about this subsidy issue but should we,………
be clumping Ethanol subsidies and food farming subsidies together,…..????
lol….very good!
The answer is not no.
The answer is hell no!
With that being duly noted, there is no sense pissing off the farmers, by singling them out alone. If subsidies are to be cut, then cut them fairly, across the board. Start with GM and GE as well. Start with the welfare cases in Chicago and Detroit. Start with the elected officials inside the Beltway. They are ALL subsidized, one way or the other.
"Why do I do this? Why am I obstinate and old fashioned?
It gives me the luxury, of having the option, to not so politely tell the government to get the hell off of my property. No county agents, no USDA reps, no BLM morons."
Not blowing smoke at you, CL, but we REALLY need a lot more people with those "old-fashioned" ideas.
Could use some national leaders reminding people about those ideas too. Hey, have you ever considered running for………………….
Just kidding. : )
It's the economy.
Urkel doesn't have enough food stamps to buy this election. Many, many people voted with their emotions in 2008.
Urkel hasn't improved the economy, hasn't improved the employment situation, and is presiding over the highest inflation in decades.
None of these things will improve appreciably by election time.
Yessir. I grew up with a guy, rich rancher's son. He inherited the ranch from his dad about the same time they started drilling. Can't remember how many sections he has or how many gas wells have been drilled, but I looked him up in the Farm Subsidies database and he's been getting a thousand bucks/month from CRP. Must be horrible getting a grand a month for watching the grass grow. I know of another rich rancher who participates in the program, yet still grazes the land. I think he and the county agent must have an arrangement.
I know a man, a farmer, who thinks just as you do. He told me a long time he'd rather make less money than to put up with Uncle Sam's BS. I grew up with more farming kids whose parents felt the same way. They had a nice, small farm and could have qualified for subsidies, but preferred to subsidize their own income w/ some cattle, pigs and the kids brought eggs with them on the school bus nearly every day to sell to the local grocery store. They drove a nice car because of it, but plumb used their equipment up instead of buying a new tractor every few years. The thing I remember most about their frugality was one winter Saturday going out to see one of the girls and the kids were out in the barn straightening staples. (I think that's how it's spelled…we called 'em "steeples")
Hey, I'm just glad we're not seeing the usual "no f'ing way" comments that usually roll out whenever a candidate is mentioned. That's pretty impressive right there.
I haven't thrown in with Pawlenty yet, but I'll be keeping an open mind.
As for lasting five minutes in a south side bar, how long do you think ubama would last?
Ron Paul cannot be bought! Ron Paul 2012
"The next President better do the following in order to get my vote…"
I predict you won't be voting in the next election.
Now I'm sure of it. I like your ideas, but NO ONE is going to promise all of that.
Yes, it is the economy. So lets elect Ron Paul. He understands the real reasons we got into this mess. He understands monetary policy. He understands the difference between Austrian and Keynsian economic theory. No other canidate understands or talks about these issues and if you don't understand the problem there is zero chance of fixing it.
"They drove a nice car because of it, but plumb used their equipment up instead of buying a new tractor every few years."
The old joke always was, that you could tell when a new Farm Bill got passed, and a farmer got re-financed. He bought a new Cadillac. Problem was, it wasn't a joke.
What you wrote Saul, is spot on.
I thought I was the only fool left who used used staples, nails, wood and concrete blocks. Those rainy days (which we get a lot of any more) I'm always in the shop recycling something.
Dear JohnK144…anybody who thinks that any man/woman can fulfill all that…including me…is crazy!
But it is a 'wish' list on what I would like to see and a start at something substantial to look for and hope for!
If we don't get someone with at least an attempt at it… we will not survive…because it is going to take something like this list to get it done or we are done!
Thank you for your response…
Dear JohnK144…oh I will be voting…I have never not voted. Had to vote almost 100% of the time with the 'lesser of two evils'…because I was not involved in the selection. I admit to letting the 'mikey' do it!
Not this time…this time…I see the destruction of our great Republic and the future of our children going down the tubes fast and faster!
I am determined and committed to doing everything I can to speak up and speak out and get involved…to making sure that we have the RIGHT candidate this time!
I am vetting on my own…and letting others know what I have found out…so that we can all be aware of who and/or what we are electing this time. And this time we WILL bring "hope" and "change" and this time it won't be a lie!
I would agree with that…
I'm in a wait and see position. Pawlenty, despite having started running shortly after the last presidential election, is still a relative unknown. Personally, when it comes to blue state republicans, I start with a natural distrust. Add to that the fact that he hails from MN; a state that has given us the likes of Jesse Ventura and the despicable Al Franken. A state that was the only state Reagan lost in '84.
I have the same problem with Romney, the so-called conservative from MA.
Only time will tell.
An anecdote: We were out at the frugal farmer's place one weekend, making money for our Sr. Trip. We moved irrigation pipe, cut a dozen or so pigs and then put up some electric fence. I had already brushed up against it and learned what a shock it could deliver. One of the other boys asked if any of us had ever peed on an electric fence. Me and another guy allowed that we hadn't. The other guy said "You first." and I told him no, he could have the honors. He made me promise to do it if he did, so I told him sure. As soon as his stream hit the fence, he was knocked to his knees, writhing in pain. Of course, we were all laughing so hard we were crying. "Your turn." he said as he staggered to his feet. "No, thanks." I replied. "You promised! You're a lyin' SOB!" he screamed at me.
"Rather be a lyin' SOB than a fool." I told him.
I count 5 so far you could count on Ron Paul for….1, 2 3 5 and 6. Check out his positions.
And 7 more here 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 and of course Ron Paul has never voted to raise the debt ceiling.
Indeed. And it just goes to show us that most people are more interested in image than substance. And due to their maleficence, the Republic will suffer.
Perhaps once all their freedoms and liberties are non-existent, then, they will understand…?
Well, I live in North Dakota, and we're not important when it comes to presidential elections. We are not a "battleground" state and we only have three electoral votes
Well, Pawlenty does have experience as a Governor, so knows what he is getting into. He doesn't need a tele-prompter. He's explaining his past mistakes or wrong judgement calls.
I don't think that old school Republicans like him…
He's putting Obama on the Carpet Big Time…The MSM is going to try and marginalize him somehow, and will have to reduce to lying again.
Big day for him today in Iowa…
Just Keep it simple…What is the goal? What is the Plan? What about Constitutional issues? That is our Standard and we want it back!
Well here's hoping they all go to Ron Paul!….lol
Eileen, there actually IS a way that a good candidate, the "right" candidate, could promise all of that and still win the election. It all comes down to the approach and presentation of the ideas.
I've written on this topic a little in the past, and in summary, what a great candidate and leader needs to do is to present to the American People a BROAD VISION of America. And then FROM that vision, let the policies that you've mentioned flow.
In other words, there may be 90,000 policy ideas that need to be done, but you can't "run" on 90,000 ideas. It's mind-numbing, and you're guaranteed to have your opposition isolate and attack you on any number of those ideas.
The way this works, from my perspective, is that you present "The Vision" of America, being a safe and secure nation; governed by the rule of law with equal justice for all. Almost no one will argue with that. But from that vision, the policies will flow for secure borders, holding people responsible for being here illegally, as well as prosecuting the white-collar criminals all the way up to Wall Street and the federal government, etc.
Present "The Vision" of America as prosperous and productive; with People able to live their lives freely in the pursuit of their own happiness. Again, hard to argue with that. And from that vision flows the policies of tax reform for American industries and manufacturing, pursuing domestic energy resources, eliminating vast amounts of regulatory burdens that stifle economic growth, etc.
You get the point. Our "best" candidate will need to lead with "The Vision," the picture of the end results that 90% of the People will agree with. And THEN allow the policy ideas to flow from that vision.
The reason I bring this up is because to approach our search for the "right" candidate based on a "long list" of particular policies will just end up frustrating us. Nobody is going to live up to everything, and even if we found a candidate that would run on all of the particulars, they'd be too easy to beat.
Just some food for thought.
PART I –
Dear looks…I like so many of Rep Paul's ideas…like the bill he tried to pass to audit the Federal Reserve, which the Democratzi Senate turned down, but I don't think he is electable!
I would have liked to seen his son, Senator Paul, take a stab at it…because the 'apple doesn't fall far from the tree'! But he said he would NOT run…if his father did…and I just don't understand Rep Paul's thinking on this one!
If he was so intent on getting his ideas implemented in the White House to help save America, and knew that he has already tried and lost…why did he not step aside and give his son a vote of confidence on getting it done this time?
I won't argue with any of that.
I like him a lot.
But Dr. Paul's isolationist slant automatically makes him unelectable, imho.
unfortunately there Johnny,….
the south side is one place,…
that has sucked up all Obama"s BS.
Are you going to let the media on both sides of the ailse decide who is electable and who isn't? Isn't that for us to decide? Watch closely and you will relize what they are doing… they call him a libertarian instead of a republican so republican primary voters will think he is not republican enough. They call him extreme, nutty, old and Mr. O'Reilly called him dumb for defending the rule of law. Isn't the rule of law what this country is founded on? They do their best to marginalize him, why?, because he cannot be bought! They know they and their corporate masters will never be able to control him! He has proven this over many years and they know he will take the power out of DC and give it back to the people. Please do not let the media blindside you with their subliminal messages and watch for them.
I am an independent not a republican, if the republicans are smart enough to get Ron Paul through the primary he will sweep the floor with Obama. Ron Paul has the backing of many independents, libertarians, constitutionalist and democrates, so it is really up to the republican primary voters.
The president should be a leader, budgets are the domain of the congress. Ron Paul is a leader by his principles and example. What other politician could inspire this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BIcIkoOwp7s&hd...
The media in an effort to marginalize Dr Paul call him an isolationist, but it is not true. The media do not expect you to know the difference between isolationist and non-intervention. Dr Paul believes that althought we do not have the right to meddle in the internal affairs of other nations we should always talk, trade and be friendly with all nations. This is far from isolationalist.
Good 'food for thought'…but the puppet of the Bilderberg…Obama the Bush…also has a 'vision for America'…and unfortunately…it is not a good one!
So you cannot be so vague as to just say 'vision'…you have to have detailed plans for a vision!
So I appreciate your insight and it is a great fundamental idea…but there have to be details along with that 'vision'! Old saying still rings true today…'without a vision…a people perish'…but it all depends on what that vision is!
I want specifics…I want detail of what they are going to do…I want results!
I wouldn't care to argue with all of your choices – don't have the energy nor inclination – but I wouldn't vote for Cain because of the health issue. I have nothing against the man, agree with much of what he's said, but even though he says he's cancer-free, his cancer type has a 95% + mortality rate within five years. That means less than 5 patients out of 100 survive 5 years from diagnosis. He was treated five years ago, (2006) so he's living on borrowed time. A 5% chance of him living longer isn't that good, not IMHO. With these types of cancers, doctors don't talk of cures, they speak of remission, that's all. Cain will never get better; at best, he'll stay in remission but chances are he'll get worse.
If there was a dead pool for candidates, he'd be the odds on favorite. Factor in the stress from an intense campaign, not to mention that of being President, well…..
Oh, I expect I would vote for him if he got the nod, but then again, it would depend upon who he selected as his running mate. Please, don't get me wrong, he seems to be a good man and I hope and pray he lives to be a hundred, Republican nominee or not, but concerns about his well-being are legitimate.
Except Paul is not a leader..he deliberately placed himself in a position of joining a group of 535 individuals to effect the budgetary domain of Congress…not to effect the Executive process by governance…
He MAY think he has the chops…but he hasn't overseen even an entire state…Johnson has…
Of the two Libertarian types, Johnson has much more credibility in effecting the proper fiscal change, leading a Democratic state, New Mexico, to proper fiscal restraint, even to budget surplus, in eight years…Paul hasn't even managed to convince a majority of 534 people his ideas are even worth supporting…
I don't think either one has what it takes to be President…but Johnson, in the budgetary field, has FAR more qualifications to actually do what he purports than Paul making speeches and going nowhere…
This is reality…Paul SOUNDS great, but hasn't "done the deed", even with his colleagues…
Dear looks…the main reason…is because Rep Paul has the right ideas…like Governor Palin…but cannot effectively deliver those ideas through speech!
He gives all the impression of being a wonderful and kind 'grandfatherly' type! Rather scratchy in tone…when speaking…without any presence or projection of confidence.
His ideas on many things are what I can, personally, identify with and want. But we MUST, we MUST have a winner in 2012…and Rep Paul will not win the election no matter what his ideas are…because he just cannot deliver the confidence, the presence to go along with the ideas.
I would only hope it would be different…but it won't be! I am hoping that another will stand up and have the ideas and the ability to show the confidence and presence to deliver those ideas…and if and when that time comes, I would hope that all will get behind them…so that the future of all of America's children can continue in a free America!
"………They are ALL subsidized, one way or the other…….."
I do remember this topic coming up before and,….
"onecornpone" gave a very convincing argument for farm subsidies,….
just as I would make one for the GI Bill but than,……..
the all or nothing at all argument is also hard to beat.
