President Barack Obama’s statement about the shooting of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz., in Tucson on Saturday:
This morning, in an unspeakable tragedy, a number of Americans were shot in Tucson, Arizona, at a constituent meeting with Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. And while we are continuing to receive information, we know that some have passed away, and that Representative Giffords is gravely wounded.
We do not yet have all the answers. What we do know is that such a senseless and terrible act of violence has no place in a free society. I ask all Americans to join me and Michelle in keeping Representative Giffords, the victims of this tragedy, and their families in our prayers.

Mr President, on this we agree.
We may agree and disagree with our elected representatives, but the use of violence is never the answer. We as a civilized society, respond to our political likes, and dislikes at the election booth…PERIOD.
Finally a measured, appropriate statement on an incident! Well said, Mr. President.
At a point like this, we all need to band together, separate ourselves from our partisanship, and pray for the victims and their families.

Some idiot on fox news just now tried to make it a second ammendment issue "Isn't it ironic that she was a second amendment advocate and now a gun killed her…" (I've heard that she's still alive, Cools…) It was a fully automated weapon idiots! There are laws around those and guess what the shooter had one anyway! She's in my prayers and I'm hoping that this is an insulated incident.

It's kind of odd- I never heard of this woman, but she seemed to have been a conservative Democat- I've heard of them but didn't believe that they existed. Also I heard that a Federal Judge also got shot- it's said he's dead, but then again the said the congress woman was dead too. I also heard that someone shot at the shooter and missed. And I heard that a citizen took down the gunman as he tryed to escape. Let's see if theres any news storys about this hero…
I wish I understood what makes a person believe that shooting into a crowd of defenseless people; with no way of protecting themselves; resolves any conflect? I hope they throw the book at this idiot… regardless of his mental condition….

This is a tragedy. From what I'm hearing from Fox right now (it's 1:40 p.m. PST as I type this), the guy who did this sounds like a total nut. Nothing but incoherent ramblings about currency, dreaming, illiteracy and grammar. None of it makes any sense whatsoever.
But a little girl is dead, a judge is dead and she's in critical condition.
My prayers go out to her family and to all those who were injured or killed.
And yes, this is NOT how we do things in America. We defend ourselves against tyranny to be sure, but we do not assassinate people in the gov't. We use the ballot box.

I hope the perpetrator is punished as severely as the law allow. I condem this awful act, as do my fellow conservatives. I can say this confidently, because any who fail to condemn this awful act are not really conservatives, but mere hooligans.

I watched Obama's remarks. I cringed when he referred to Ms Gifford in the past tense…….a slip I can forgive but, I know her family was listening.

From his videos I have to say, that as much as I would like to chalk this up to even more violence by the Left in this era of Obama, Loughner is probably not sane enough to have any politics in the normal sense.
We also know that this is an awfully convenient change of topic for Obama & Co. as the national debate is steamrolling them & his legacy legislation is facing repeal.

It's something that really needs to be done, and if Obama has it in him to make this clear, and make this unifying instead of divinding, I might gain a bit of respect for the man.

There was a guy with a gun who helped stop the shooting from getting worse so this is a plus for the 2nd amendment. Crazy people will always be around and can always get guns. Mexico has strict gun laws and the people are unable to defend themselves and being slaughtered.

Giffords is my representative. I just found out about this. A lot of stories and opinions flying around. Obama was right on top of it though. I personally don't like her politics but that isn't a reason to shoot her – for me, anyway. This guy seemed a whole lot of whacked out. The pressure of bad policy and hate and a lousy economy in our society will give rise to such behavior. Crazy or not – everyone has a breaking point. I like Animal Farm, too. And Brave New World. An additional problem will be the blow back from this incident since it happened at a Town Meeting. Now our Representatives will be deterred from participating in attending Town Meetings and I can't say that I would blame them.
