Congressional Magic: Nevada Now on the Pacific Ocean!
by PubliusToday, the Democrats dropped a 1,900 page spending binge on the American public. With their grip on Capitol Hill expiring in just a few weeks, Democrats are rushing through one last party on the taxpayer dime.
No doubt, many spending whoppers will be unearthed as the bill becomes more public, but this little gem, passed to us by a source on Capitol Hill, really caught our eye:
PACIFIC COASTAL SALMON RECOVERY
For necessary expenses associated with the restoration of Pacific salmon populations, $80,000,000, to remain available until September 30, 2012: Provided, That of the funds provided herein the Secretary of Commerce may issue grants to the States of Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Nevada, California, and Alaska, and Federally-recognized tribes of the Columbia River and Pacific Coast (including Alaska) for projects necessary for conservation of salmon and steelhead populations that are listed as threatened or endangered, or identified by a State as at risk to be so-listed, for maintaining populations necessary for exercise of tribal treaty fishing rights or native subsistence fishing, or for conservation of Pacific coastal salmon and steelhead habitat, based on guidelines to be developed by the Secretary of Commerce….
Hmm…Last time we checked, Nevada was landlocked and didn’t remotely touch the Pacific Ocean or any of the tributaries of the Columbia River (which run extensively through Idaho.)
Now, how would Nevada get to be eligible for grants to protect the Pacific Salmon. Do the fish have a gambling addiction?

The only part of Nevada with Pacific Salmon is Lake Tahoe and the tributaries that feed it on the Nevada side of the lake.
Sorry to put a wet towel on this story, but there are technically waterways that reach the Pacific from Nevada in the Sierra mountains.
As having fished in AK for six years and knowing how salmon run and attempt to go back to their stream of birth, I can honestly say this guy is high on something if he thinks Nevada should get one dime from this spending fiasco…
No doubt this money will end up in democrat campaign war chests and used to commit vote fraud.
Nevada is also up for money from The Manatee Recovery Act and The Aligator Recovery Act.

I think there actually are or used to be salmon in Nevada. I'm more of a hunterguy than a fisherguy, so I can't say for sure.

It is our acceptance or indifference to this kind of crap that has led us to the state we are in today. Sure, it's only $80,000,000.00 dollars – surely there must be hundreds (thousands?) of similar type projects passed and funded every year. What's the difference?

There are still some pissed off (and rightly so) Yakama Tribes to deal with the Cellilo Falls mess. And although they have a casino, it ain't the resort kind if you know what I am saying. That money will end up going up and down the Columbia and Snake Rivers for salmon ladders and reclamations projects and fish hatcheries that actually support industry AND recreation. I can even vouch for the money man at ODFW and the Superintendent of the the Yakama tribe. Sensible men both who hate waste. It's just the state legislatures you have to deal with, but the interior of Oregon and Washington is redder than Texas. Idaho is faithfully conservative.

Technically you are correct, there are waterways that reach the Pacific from Nevada in the Sierra mountains. However, a search on "Lake Tahoe and Pacific Salmon" reveals that the type of salmon in Lake Tahoe was accidentally introduced by "evil" mankind into the lake in 1944 (www.tahoekidsguide.com/Kokanee_Salmon_in_Tahoe.html). These salmon are not your traditional migrate from the sea upstream to some lake to spawn. Rather, they spend their time spawning in freshwater streams/rivers then migrate back to Tahoe presumably to gamble and look for Freddie Corleone's body. http://www.answers.com/topic/sockeye-salmon

While I totally agree that this Bill is an absolute waste of our tax dollars a little simple research before going off half-cocked would better serve us all.
One only needs to spend around 15 minutes looking at the expenditures in this Bill to get a clear picture of the abhorant waste that is going on in our government. It doesn't take a Debt Commission but merely a 5th grade education to see that our government is totally irresponsible and with Obama/Reid/Pelosi in control we will be lucky to survive this nonsense.
We best all get busy and contact our elected representatives and let them know that Nov. 2 was only the first shot across the bow!!

Actually, Pacific salmon used to reach Nevada via the Columbia-Snake-Owyhee rivers, but power and irrigation dams built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries blocked that passage. Since the purpose of the bill is Pacific Coastal Salmon RECOVERY, it makes sense for Nevada to be eligible for some funding to rebuild habitat, but first Idaho needs to build fish ladders on the Owyhee and Hells Canyon dams.

It was a joke, the Colorado River runs through Nevada and down to the Gulf of Mexico, so if the fish (not cold enough for salmon anyway) could go upriver on the Colorado, they would reach Nevada.
Sorry guys, the only salmon in Tahoe are Kokanee. They are 100% landlocked, always have been and always will be. There are no Tahoe tributaries that come even remotely near the Pacific ocean. In addition, other landlocked states not included in this bill have populations of Kokanee, namely New York, New Mexico, Wyoming, Utah, Montana, and Colorado.

You don't know your NV geography. No water from Lake Tahoe enters the Pacific Ocean. ALL Tahoe waters flow into western NV and end up in Pyramid Lake, which has no outlet (ie. Dead Sea).
In the northeastern part of our state, from Owyhee to Jackpot (and beyond), several drainages DO drain north into the Snake River in Idaho, which does drain into the Pacific Ocean. Both forks of the Jarbidge River are large enough to support salmon & steel head and have done so before the dams were built.
As a republican, I think this is a boon-doggle, so this is a lesson in geography NOT support for the earmark.

Jar, You are right! I remember seeing salmon in the waterway that leaves Lake Tahoe – they are not Pacific Salmon. I also just realized (now that you jogged my memory) that this water is flowing east down the Truckee river and not west – Tahoe is on the eastern side of the divide.
Having traveled quite a bit through Owyhee and Jackpot during my college days, I had forgotten about the drainage to the Snake – duh!

You're right that Nevada is not connected directly to the Pacific Ocean and it is important to examine how federal dollars are spent. But, before people start calling other people idiots and making snarky judgments just by looking at a map, they might want to go to Google to find that Nevada historically had a thriving salmon fishery all the way through the early 1900s (like Idaho, which is also landlocked). These were important fisheries and Nevada state law used to prohibit dams without fish ladders. The salmon populations disappeared after construction of major dams throughout the west, particularly the Hells Canyon Dams on the Snake River. For the ignoramuses among the commenters, you might like to know that salmon can swim many hundreds of miles upstream to spawn. No wonder our country is going downhill if this is the level of knowledge that informs commentary and debate.

Pyramid Lake, Nevada has an active fishery administered by the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe which produces trophy grade cutthroat trout and other fish stock indigenous to Pyramid Lake.
Pyramid Lake was severely depleted by the US Government, when it diverted a significant amount of Truckee River waterflow from Pyramid Lake, to the arid regions of Fallon, NV for agricultural purposes. This effectively destroyed the Pyramid Lake ecosystem, until the Truckee River waterflow was allowed to flow again into Pyramid Lake, to begin a period of fragile rehabilitation, including replentishing the fish stocks destroyed by the diversion of water.
The monies will be used for the continued rehabilitation of Pyramid Lake for damages caused by the US Government.
Also adding to this FYI, Lake Tahoe is partially in Nevada (As well as Calif.). Lake Tahoe has salmon, …from the pacific ocean…..
