Lefty Millionaires: ‘Tax Us More’

With the US Congress hurtling toward a deadline on expiring tax cuts, a growing number of wealthy people are calling for higher taxes on the rich to help restore America’s fiscal health.
One effort gathered over 45 millionaires who signed an open petition calling for the end of the tax cuts adopted since 2001 on those with annual incomes exceeding one million dollars.
Tax breaks for the wealthy should expire “for the fiscal health of our nation and the well-being of our fellow citizens,” the letter said. It was signed by Ben & Jerry’s ice cream founder Ben Cohen, hedge fund manager Michael Steinhardt and others.
Guy Saperstein, a retired California trial lawyer who organized the effort, said he was “frustrated” that President Barack Obama appeared to be wavering on his pledge to end tax cuts for the wealthy.
“I think the country’s in trouble,” Saperstein told AFP. “In hard times, the top strata who have done fabulously well need to sacrifice a bit, and it’s not much of a sacrifice… We have among the lowest tax rates of any industrialized democracy.”
Saperstein said an estimated 1,500 people have signed the letter although some of them did not want to be publicly identified on the group’s website.
Philippe Villers, a French-born US businessman who founded Computervision in the 1960s and now heads Grain Pro, says he signed the letter even though it would mean higher taxes for himself.
“I don’t think (extending the tax cuts for the wealthy) are fair or in the interest of building a strong economy,” he said.
Villers argued that tax cuts enacted under former president George W. Bush gave a “disproportionate benefit to people with means” and contributed to the current economic woes.
Another 410 high-income Americans have signed a similar petition by Wealth for the Common Good, a network of business and civic leaders, calling for tax cuts to expire for families with incomes above 250,000 dollars.
“I’ve had a good run over the last few years. There’s no question that others now deserve to share in that prosperity,” said one of the signatories, Jeffrey Hayes, president of Stratalys Research & Consulting.
Similar comments have come from Warren Buffett, the investment guru who ranks among the world’s richest individuals.
“I think that people at the high end — people like myself — should be paying a lot more in taxes. We have it better than we’ve ever had it,” Buffett said in an ABC News interview.
Read the whole thing here. Just goes to prove, just because you’re rich doesn’t mean you know anything about economics or fiscal policy. Federal revenues have been fairly stable for the past couple decades…its the spending that’s skyrocketed. Also, keep in mind, there is actually nothing preventing these folks from writing a big check to the Treasury, if they think they are undertaxed. Do as you say.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but these liberal nuts are perfectly free to send as much of their money to the government as they'd like at tax time, yes? So if they'd like to pay 99.9% of their own personal income as taxes, no one's stopping them.
Of course, as any rational person knows, the more money you send the government, the more it will spend and waste. A better use of these wealthy liberals money would be to extend it as venture capital, or something. Allow someone else the chance to develop a job creating business or endeavor. That would do more for people than handing it over to the feds ever would. But try explaining that to a liberal.

I just don't get it. If you want to pay more taxes, knock yourself out. Send in an extra check; don't take your deductions. I'm sure the IRS won't insist on sending the money back.
Somehow, I'm sure none of these millionaires have done that. What is their problem? Why do they think it has to be compulsory? When you are focused on compulsory, you are not focused on yourself, you are focused on trying to make someone else do something.
I suspect they think they themselves will dodge the worst via their special deductions and/or deals with the government and the other rich guy will have to foot the bill.
Warren Buffet is funny. Not to mention he is an idiot.
He poses about being an egalitarian, what with his support of the estate tax; what he doesn't say is that Berkshire makes millions by selling an insurance product that allows the customer to avoid paying the estate tax. Not to mention that Berkshire has picked up a number of companies under its umbrella by purchasing them at firesale prices after the original owner had to sell the business in order to raise the proceeds to pay the estate tax.
There is no law preventing you from selling all your goods and giving the money to the poor. You can even continue to work and give your income. Don't tell me what to do with the fruits of my labor, though. That is slavery.
I think I shall stop buying Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream from now on. If lot's of people do that, we'll just see if they continue to like the idea of paying that much on April 15th.

I'll make it easy for them. All they have to do is take thier net income for the last ten years, (those cheap Bush years), and multiply it by 70%. Subtract from it what they actually paid to the US Treasury for income taxes, and cut a check for that amount to the US Treasury. And by the way no ciaiming a charitable deduction for it either guys. Otherwise they are just blowing BS.

Why would they voluntarily advocate giving a failing business (the government) more money? Look, in a purely economic sense: The taxes we pay are an investment in the business of government. When a business is failing, do investors line up to pour in more money? Of course not! Those that run the business find ways to get more efficient, leaner and more productive.
Why do we not hold the business of government to the same standard? What sense does it make to say: Hey, government is failing; it's fat, innefficient and poorly run. Gee, I guess we need to put more money in it.

As I said in someone else's post, it's all about reducing competition by keeping everyone else down by increasing their costs to expand. These guys love the power and near monopoly they control, it gives them lots of money and makes it so the barriers of entry are hard. This is nothing more than a way to make those barriers of entry even more difficult.
They're not being dumb businessmen, they're being shady businessmen. They made their fortune, and they want to keep on swimming in their pools of $100 bills.
If there are wealthy people out there that really want to give more of their money to the government, have at it. Write a check to the US Department of the Treasury and send it in. Put your money where your mouth is. There's nothing stopping you, if you really, truly believe what you are saying.

Millionaires and billionaires do not have a gun held to their head from the IRS telling them that they cannot pay more in taxes. The argument that the tax rates aren't 'high enough' is suspect. What they're actually saying is that they want the rates raised for 'the wealthy' but each individual wealthy person will spend a lot of money on accountants and lawyers to get out of paying the higher rates. It's insane. There is no law saying you cannot pay more in taxes than what you owe. All you have to do is write the check and send it to the US Treasury and they'll gladly accept it without protest.

It seems to me that those wealthy individuals who call for tax hikes fall into two categories:
1. Trust-funders who never had to work for their wealth and who will have plenty left over after high taxes (or so they think) to live out their lives in comfort and play; and,
2. Wealthy people who worked for it but have retired from productive application of their wealth, see no moral obligation to continue making it work in further productive enterprises, and will also have enough left over after high taxes (or so they think) to live out their lives in comfort and play.
I say, "…or so they think…" because they may not realize that as Hank Rearden and Dagny Taggart found out, the more the "compassionate" central government finds it can gain revenues by shafting the nation's reserves of productive private capital, the more it will continue to shaft.
I think the rest of the wealthy in this country are either now in Galt's Gultch, real or virtual, and the rest are making plans to join them.

A desk top with crap 250M hard drive, a floppy drive, an average, NON GAMNG sound and video card cost $1000 plus if you got a decent one, and the monitor and every other gizmo was separate. Laptops sucked and were even more expensive. The Pentium I chip was, at least mine, $115.
Today a desktop with a gazillion GIG hard drive, gamer quality sound card, photo shop quality video capacity and God knows what else is under $750, laptops with huge memories, DVD capability, excellent sound cards, USB ports out the wazoo, memory stick slots, and WiFi capacity anywhere on earth are under $1000 if you shop smart.

This is SIMPLE. You should have a special block to check on your tax return. If you are an Obama supporter, you tax rate is automatically increased to 20% over their normal rate. Now, Wasn't that simple?!!!!!
Levy a one time tax of 90% of all assets of everyone who signed the letter. That should make them happy. And shut them up. Which will make me happy.
They do suggest less government spending. But the only government spending they ever want to cut is the military. They couldn't possibly think of cutting spending on those big fat welfare recipients who just sit back and watch Oprah and The View on their big screen TVs while eating Big Macs. That would be un-American.
Apparently Ben and Jerry aren't smart enough to realize that if the government reigned in spending, we'd all have more money to buy their ice cream. Until then, I remain proud to claim I have never tried their poison.
OT, but one thing I've been doing is moving more and more people to Macs in my workplace. It reduces our workload because MacOS simply, well, WORKS, instead of crashing every 5 minutes and accumulating more viruses and spyware than Paris Hilton's cooch does for VD.
Given that the world runs on computers now and I am highly skilled at implementing, planning, and maintaining installations, I have a skill that is worth more than the declining dollar. Won't be that hard to, for example, fix the grocer's server in exchange for some food, the barber's point of sale PC for a haircut, etc, etc…

Knew a sales rep that had lots of friends in Boulder, CO and she said that most of them and their rich friends there were trust-funders. Sad, narcissistic, depressives, that had nothing to do, but drink and drug themselves silly while spending money. Absolutely, no concept of the value of a dollar or a day's work. These are the types of people that want higher taxes, they'll have enough to continue their worthless lifestyle so they could care less about learning what really will happen as a result.
We should organize a "Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is Day" and send $.01 checks to the IRS to demonstrate to these buffoons, their hypocrisy.
