Vocally rail against the PC crusade against Columbus and the European exploration of our continent. It was unequivocally a great thing. Just don’t do it in the same breath as railing against “illegal immigrants.”

Well, Columbus was darn lucky- or disingenuous.
Everybody knows of course that Chris thought he had found the "Indies." Far too many people think they "know" that Columbus bravely asserted the Earth's sphericity against universal belief that the world was flat. But *that* is utter myth; and it's where the story starts to get interesting.
You see, everybody in 15th century Europe knew the world was round. Yes, they did. That was never the issue. What pitted Columbus against the scholars of his day was not the shape of the globe, but its size. the Greek Eratosthenes had calculated the size of the earth with (we know now) surprising accuracy. But Columbus was trying to argue that, no, the planet was nearly a third smaller than the established figure; and that therefore, subtracting Marco Polo's distance to China from the total, one could reach Asia by sailing about 40 days to the west… the maximum feasible distance for ships at that time.
The scholars were right and Chris was dead wrong: he was bloody lucky he bumped into some land just as his provisions ran out, and right where he claimed 'Cathay' was.
But was it really luck? Or was Chris being crazy like a fox? You see, we know Columbus had spent time both in the Basque ports of NW Sapain, and also Bristol in England; and there's I think sufficient evidence today to argue that those cod fisherman had been working the great banks off the New World for generations. So it's just possible that Columbus knew that land was to be found where he found it, and if that required 'adjusting' the size of the Earth, well, so be it.
It was STILL a hemisphere away. And the Indies are considered PART of India. (The Indies is a term that has been used to describe the lands of South and Southeast Asia,[1] occupying all of the present India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, the Maldives, and also Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Brunei, Singapore, the Philippines, East Timor, Malaysia and Indonesia. )

Yes, I'm really a teacher, I'm really a linguist, and I have a DEGREE in history separate from my other degrees, as well as have resigned a commission in the US Navy which also gives me a background in not only navigation, but navigation history.
I'm not the one in need of a history lesson. I'm simply pointing out that Columbus was not the first European to discover America, that instead it was Leif Erikson, or at least he was the first one to come and have a look around so to speak and then establish a colony here. Columbus thought he was a hemisphere away.

Their ancestors slaughtered indigenous people, and they created the trans-Atlantic slave trade, bringing to Latin America more than 8 million African slaves and working virtually all of them to death. I also love this myth that all native people are somehow 'at one with nature'. I think the line goes that the reason they didn't do more damage to the environment was due to the lack of technology to do so, not some green earth environmental movement.

I don't understand the term "native culture" because as far as I am aware, there is no monolithic group of people called "native". I suspect that living in a time before long range communication and travel that people native to what is now New England, people native to what is now California, and people native to what is now Brazil probably all had their own individual culture.
I mean, it would be as racist and stupid as saying "native culture" when talking of all of Europe or Asia.
But if you can't defend your racist world-view then I won't press the issue.
