That was a real wake up call. Thank goodness our tech and ingenuity let us recover quickly and surge ahead. Now, however, our current administration is attempting to dismantle what JFK initiated. It was a most exciting time. Now we will become a backwater if BO has his way.

Big deal. A father and son in Newburgh, NY launched a home made space balloon and camera and GPS device into space and parachuted it back down to earth recently.

The Russians chose to have the satellite broadcast its beep right in the middle of one internationally allocated amateur radio bands to ensure it was listened to around the globe. The program started the race to space with Russia leading the way, then the US taking over. The lead went back and forth over many years with the US getting the lead by putting man on the moon.

The most likely impetus for mankind to develop clean, safe, efficient alternative energy sources lies in developing our capacity to colonize and utilize the resources in our own solar system. None of our near neighbors have abundant supplies of fossil fuels, and in order to reach and exploit our neighbors that do have large supplies of random hydrocarbons which might be synthesized into fuel, we're going to have to learn how to create the energy necessary to life on the Moon and Mars as well as the means of going beyond the asteroid belt.
And shutting down our manned space flight programs is certainly a large step in the wrong direction. Imagine, the national security implications of finally developing that energy source described above not to mention all the other defense applications of a robust space program.
Hydrogen is the most abundant element in our known universe. So, IMHO, it is the most likely fuel and energy source once we get colonies off this mud ball. The biggest problem is controling the energy once released. Until that problem is resolved, we will more than likely have to rely on solar energy.
Everyone in the neighborhood went out, sat in lawn chairs, and watched it blink by. We knew , no matter who had achieved this, it was the beginning of something big.
If trespassing doesn't work to put him behind bars, TREASON might.

John Kennedy understood that Americans love a challenge So, he threw the dice…and NASA,and America did not let him down. And from the money we spent, we've gotten tremendous techonological advances…what did we get? Your cell phone, your GPS, notebooks, laptops, desktops, Hi-def TV, lazer surgery, CD's, your mp-3 player, your i-PAD…just to name a dozen or so.
That President Obama doesn't see the benefit in this (as Blackberry addicted as he admits he is) is a real American tragedy. Space offers us many opportunities…including many that could help create industries and jobs not yet thought of.
Why? The technologies haven't been created yet. Can I say such creation is certain? No…but the computer that took us to the Moon in 1969 had less than a 5,000 word memory. No common citizen had known or heard of…gigs of storage or gigs of random access memory then. Nor, could they conceive it. But, it happened…didn't it?
Now…apply this to a vibrant active space program and consider what could be in 50 years for our kids?
Let me make sure I have this right. The folks who write comments on what I thought was an anti-big-government site think that a free market is incapable of providing things like cell phones, computers and laser surgery, and we must cheerfully hand over our wealth to the central planners at NASA in the hope that they will stumble onto such innovations as they carry out their state-glorifying missions? Sheesh!
Where in the Constitution does it give the U.S. government the authority to spend our money on space exploration? If those of us who advocate the Tenth Amendment are willing to give them a pass when it comes to NASA, then we have no firm principle to stand on when we argue against PBS, the National Endowment for the Arts, or any other unconstitutional crap the demagogues in D.C. foist on us.
The trouble with space exploration is that it is so darned fascinating for people like me who like engineering and technical stuff, but geeze folks, you have to keep your heads. I used to think NASA was wonderful too, but then I grew up.
When politicians wax poetic about frontiers and the human spirit, hang on to your wallet.

Are the Americans in this Brave New World the same kind of people as Americans in 1957 ? They have had a "representation" in government, law, education, entertainment a dumbed down educational system that teaches their civic history and ethos as evil..
That the United Nations, publicly the most corrupt and incompetent group in the world, worse even than the misleadingly named European "Union" as the "moral arbiter of the world". and the best model for the USA. Neither of which "unions" is, even with the best intentions in law and limits on their "leaders", nor have a tradition of political organisation similar to that of the USA. A part of the population bought / bribed by politicians with money expropriated – taxes – from working people to pay the bribes to keep them in office, And to keep their bribed clientele dependent on these payments rather than their own skills and dignities.And BY RIGHT the most feckless irresponsible persons to live off these taxes with NO SERVICE demanded in return. They propagate their attitudes to their offspring. Teaching them by example that the "leaders" and their supporting populatiojns are suckers , the host for their parasitism.. These nations in the European Union CAN bribe the people with money NOT SPENT for their own defense, living as they have done for the past 65 years under the safety umbrella of the American People.

Jane, well said. I think we have what it takes. I have great faith that Americans will rise up and take our country back from the oligarchy of robber barons who pull the puppet strings. I won't say it will be a bloodless coup, it may very well be messy before its all over. I'm ok with that. The current lot must go. Preferably in their entirety. I dream of seeing a long line of orange jumpsuit clad politicians dragging their ball and chain down Vermont Avenue, straight to the Washington DC Dept. of Corrections. With an angry mob cussing and spitting venom all the way from both sides of the street.
