Chicago Gang Members Hold Press Conference to Slam Police

At a news conference organized by self-identified gang members Thursday morning, several speakers complained that police and city officials do not respect them, and that the only way to curb violence is to provide jobs and improve their community.
The men who spoke out Thursday morning blamed poverty, drugs and a lack of jobs for the problems in the streets. They also said that Chicago Police Supt. Jody Weis’ meeting with so-called gang leaders was a waste of time.
But when asked what could be done right now to stop the daily barrage of bullets on Chicago streets, they didn’t have an answer.
The self-described current and former gang members held a news conference at the Columbus Park Refectory, at 5701 W. Jackson Blvd. on the city’s West Side.
“The problem with them is that they’re giving us an ultimatum – quit – instead of an alternative. But we’re offering these young men an alternative, saying, ‘Get off the corner selling these bags, and come to this construction site and pick up this brick,” Reginald Akeem Berry Sr., an admitted former gang member, said.
He and others at the press conference took issue with Weis’ strategy of meeting with gang leaders and warning them of serious consequences if violence continues.

It's all in how you look at it. Seems like they all have jobs already. They provide their own apprenticeship program, on the job bidness training, after school activities, a living wage, a chance to advance into management, strict due diligence rules, unlimited technical support, dress code standards, and a true sense of community.

If it wasn't the thugs running the "Cease Fire" organization wailing on the news about the horrible police not doing anything every time a truly innocent was caught in the gang cross fire while the community refused to talk to the police due to fear of gang retaliation. Then it was the Father Flagger's of the city stirring up trouble blaming everyone but those thugs with the guns for the problems of the inner city.
As a recent escapee I can't begin to tell you the times I have had to shake my head and wonder at the hand in the other guy's pocket world view that so many of my patients had. I don't know where personal responsibility goes when one is raised on well-fare but I can tell you what the results look like. Just take a walk on the South Side of Chicago, but don't forget your bullet proof vest and don't go after dark.
In there case it is someone elses fault. It's the elitist left-wing's fault that they don't support the communities they come from. It's the fault of the community organizers who don't really organize, but divide.
They can't be woken up because the community dis-organizers do not give the the means to learn the truth. And until they learn that conservatism is the only way, they will be in the downward spiral they are in now.

I doubt anyone on this thread cannot pinpoint the cultural problem.
But I do not celebrate an escalation of violence as the only solution. Turning hearts and minds at the street level is dirty, thankless work. Training people (and yes, they are people, persons, humans; not just objectified symptoms of our political failures) for meaningful work and stability is a long-term commitment. Ask any Army veteran of Iraq.
We don't want to think about our own commitment to freedom right here, within our own society, our own neighborhoods. We don't want to be local heroes or leaders or freedom fighters down in the slave camps of the DNC victim farm system. We want to have parades and cheer for those we sent away to defend us from the need to face up to it here.

How sad that they(gang members) did not and can not accept responsibility for their own actions and inaction. They are certifiable members of the "it's not my fault; it's everyone else's fault" that I ditched school, looked for the easy buck, was to lazy to study, or just plain bored. There might be another side to this store, and the 'gang leaders' may have a point being overlooked: A few months ago a big headline story was about a Chicago political (unions) smack-down of Wal-Mart's efforts to build and open two or three super stores in the inner-city. This would have provided hundreds of entry-level jobs, with on-the-job training and opportunities for up-ward mobility in areas where jobs and opportunity simply do not exist.
The unions, not fond of non-union Wal-Mart, pressured "their" City leaders to block the plan, then began demanding that IF the stores were built, there must be a minimum starting wage of about $11 per hour — not a very reasonable demand when similar jobs in similar stores 4 or 5 miles away pay about $3 per hour less. I don't know what the resolution is/was, but presumably Wal-Mart has suspended its efforts to "fight city hall."

People are their own first line of defense in this world against those that would take their property, do them harm or try to destroy their way of life whether though malice or ignorance. It is becoming obvious to me that the perpetrators off evil in this world have and are becoming blatantly open in their evil whether they are simple criminals, Wall Street thieves or worse, judges, politicians. They are doing so because they have nothing to fear. No real punishment or consequences will come their way. I urge everyone to consider the citizenry themselves as the final arbiters of justice. When politicians were more concerned about tar and feathers this was a better country. When the local potential molester or murderer was concerned that his neighbors always had a good length of rope available, when the town bully knew anyone could be armed and end his reign, I think it was a better world. An old saying is that high fences make good neighbors. I would add to that that an armed and packing citizenry makes for a more polite society. Would you rob a bank if every customer and employee had a weapon in their waist band? Attempt to assault someone if you thought he and his wife both had protection close at hand? Enforce what is known to be right by sane people. Make the evil ones in our society the ones who are afraid, as it used to be. Be vigilant in your awareness of injustice. First, let me say, I wouldn't any of these guys over for dinner or living nextdoor.
Do I see something positive here? Yes I do.
The fact that these tough guys realized there was a problem and they want a solution.
I don't want to come across as some bleeding heart liberal 'cause I'm not. Can we find some reason for this gang phenomenon? Are they victims along the same lines as the slaves who were kept illiterate (by the Democrats) so they might be more easily controlled? I feel the the current powers that be still use this principle to control the masses.
So we're not going to resort to genocide; we'll have to deal with these people and once we see ourselves in them and recognize how much they were victimized maybe we'll find the right solution.
Remember this: never say you'd never act like they do if in the same situation 'cause you never know. I'm of German descent and my ancestor did atrocities.
