ObamaCare Rationing: FDA Considers Denying Leading Cancer Drug

The FDA is not supposed to consider costs in its decisions, but if the agency rescinds approval, insurers are likely to stop paying for treatment.
“It’s hard to talk about Avastin without talking about costs,” said Eric P. Winer, director of the Breast Oncology Center at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. “For better or worse, Avastin has become in many ways the poster child of high-priced anti-cancer drugs.”
Avastin is the world’s best-selling cancer drug, with global sales of $5.8 billion, and it is the top-selling product for Roche, whose Genentech unit makes it. Its use to treat breast cancer brings in about $855 million in annual revenue in the United States.
Avastin is approved for use in treating several cancers, including those of the colon, lung, kidney and brain. So doctors could continue to write prescriptions for it for breast cancer, as an “off-label” use. But in addition to prompting insurers including Medicare to stop paying for Avastin, an FDA revocation of approval for its use in breast cancer treatment might mean that breast cancer patients would lose eligibility for a program in which Genentech caps the annual cost of the drug at $57,000 for women with annual incomes of less than $100,000.
Avastin was the first drug designed to fight cancer by blocking blood flow to tumors, which has been hailed as one of the first significant innovations in decades in the war on cancer. But Avastin is also one of the most expensive of a new generation of anti-cancer medications that only eke out a few extra months of life.

There are no death panels. There are only end of life panels. The premiums are so high because they are expensive. The little orange men in my basement told me to set my hamster's hair on fire.
They just object to truth in labeling. Death Panels do exist,,,but they want to name them something warm and fuzzy. Progressives cannot be open and forthe right on anything because a rational person would see through their lies. Is this the reform the libs were hoping for? Is this administration concerned about women's health issues?
The Drug should be banned….. for Democrats.

In the above sentence from the WaPo link, notice the combined use of the phrase "one of the most expensive" and "eke out a few extra months of life." That tells me other Stage IV cancer drugs are in the FDA's cross hairs. Too expensive for the "general welfare" of the people as leftians like to stretch that clause in the Constitution. Or in other words; F 'em!

This is just the start. A government-run program cannot be efficient and will therefore cease being accountable for the results. The Obamacare program must fail and that means the following drugs will become rationed right out of the market:
(i) hydrocodone
(ii) ibuprofen
(iii) acetaminophen
(iv) aspirin
It can't be avoided. The structure of the plan means you will have to do without care as more and more government workers are hired to make decisions, make decisions about decisions and make decisions about decisions upon decisions. This is the nature of the beast and an absolute economic certainty. My estimate is that the system will be completely bankrupt by 2017.

Here's the issue with Avastin: while it's moderately effective against tumor-induced artherogenesis, there's no significant mortality drop. That means the drug is largely ineffective. Yes, some people respond, but since the majority do not respond to the drug it's a waste of your insurance premiums.
However, there's still a lot of bright outlooks: nanotechnology has made HUGE leaps in cancer treatment. Specifically, a colleague of mine is working on cytotoxic gold particles that are attracted to radioactively-marked blood vessels on tumors. These gold particles are poisonous to cancer cells and can stop the tumor's blood supply. Doses and side effects are minimal. BE ON THE LOOKOUT!!!
However, cutbacks from Obama will make the development of any new drugs harder…

I share your hope that we begin the turn-around on Big Government tyranny in November. I'm not convinced by any means that we will avoid a total financial meltdown of cosmic proportions even if we manage to win in November.
I recommend that you plan a rapid egress plan for you and your family. I think that you have about one year to get that done. Things are going to fly apart rapidly after that. I suggest reading either "Pebble in the Sky" (mandatory euthanasia at 60) or "Logan's Run" (mandatory euthanasia at 21; the book is way better than the movie BTW). The reasons for limiting life are "overpopulation" and "limited resources". It's not much of a stretch for such reasons to be applied to our current situation….scary.

It would be great to see new methods like this developed. But at the rate Obama is destroying the pharma industry, pharma and biotech won't be around long enough to fund the large-scale development and manufacturing (something the universities can't and don't do).

This is my humble opinion. The FDA is another useless government agency that costs us untold bazillions in taxes and the people running it get wealthy with bribes. The FDA doesn't do crap to protect the public, it's just another form of control. Anyone ever hear the commercials, see them on the internet about drugs that lawyers are now suing that they were harmful after the FDA approved them. Do some in depth study on the FDA and Vitamin B-17. The FDA is t our health as the Department of Education is to our schools. As long as we are abolishing (wishful thinking) federal agencies, FDA should go along with the Department of Education. If there were not so much useless testing and trials mandated by the FDA the cost of medications would not be so high. Yet with all the clinical testing and nonsense, drugs end up hurting people and lawyers end up profiting from it. The studies are out there you just have to look for them.
What catches my eye in this article is that the drug in question helps to "eke out a few extra months of life". I believe in the sanctity of life from beginning to natural end, but there has to be rational thought about prolonging a suffering life. I watched a loved one die of brain cancer and it was not anything to wish on any person. To have prolonged that suffering with drugs, was not worth the emotional cost. Extending life with drugs for a brief time is a totally different issue than ending life other than naturally.

There appear to be at least two universes if you consider where liberals and progressives get their ideas.
One of the key elements of rationing under Obamacare is that the incentive to develop new drugs is pretty much taken away. That in effect rations what drugs we have.
This is truly ineffective.
There are some heart medications which make surgery unnecessary. However, those drugs cost money. When medical R&D is halted or at least curtailed, we won't see developments like that – so we'll be stuck using more expensive modalities.
And that's a form of rationing.

Cancer drugs aren't cheap because they are not a high demand commodity and take years of development time. If the FDA is applying the Gronigen (sp?) Protocol to cancer treatment, those bureaucrats will be the first in front of the firing squad (figuratively speaking).

Wash U Med, specifically The Cortex. The guy that runs the entire program tells me the woes of Obamacare's agenda and how it'll hamper any further research. Ironically, he's the only guy producing anything and making money for the program. Most of my family and friends are in medicine, and none of them (regardless of political affiliation) want any form of Obamacare. All it'll do is dry up R&D funds to be "redistributed" to where the government wants.
What people should be scared about is the dramatic cuts that Medicare will impose on cardiology and oncology. What are the two biggest killers of Americans? Heart disease and cancer (in that order). You'll effectively lessen the care of the majority of older Americans. All I can say is "don't get sick".
