Matthews Slams Dean, Defends Breitbart: Sherrod Video Included Her Redemption

Today, on MSNBC’s Hardball, Chris Matthews acknowledged (and appears to be the first member of the mainstream media to acknowledge) that the video Andrew Breitbart posted in his July 19th Big Government article about an NAACP audience’s reaction to a particular moment in Shirley Sherrod’s speech, does in fact include Ms. Sherrod discussing her redemptive revelation (transcript from Newsbusters):
CHRIS MATTHEWS: Well, there you go. [Quoting Ms. Sherrod] “I opened my eyes. I realized it wasn’t about black and white. It was, but it was about other things, about poverty.” So … that part, that part in there about redemptive revelation was actually in the initial tape.
This then prompts Mr. Matthews to ask his guests, Governor Howard Dean and Joan Walsh, a question that answers itself:
Yeah, but why do you think if this was a complete slime job, why do you think Breitbart kept that in there, Governor? Why did he keep in that part – let me let the Governor in here. Why did he put the redemptive part in here at all?
Dean admits he has never even viewed that 2:36 video in its entirety! Nor has he even read Andrew Breitbart’s original article, which states:
Eventually, her basic humanity informs that this white man is poor and needs help. But she decides that he should get help from “one of his own kind”. She refers him to a white lawyer.
Of course that has not stopped Dean from appearing on multiple networks and ripping Fox News as being racist for having played the video of Shirley Sherrod released on BigGovernment.com (yes, the same 2:36 video he has not watched all — any? — of).
It’s reasonable to assume Dean isn’t the only member of the media or punditry guilty of this negligence. While the Democrat Media Complex rushes to condemn Breitbart for not offering adequate context in his multimedia presentation, how many actually stopped to read and watch the context that was given in the first place? (Hint: The over/under is Chris Matthews.)
Will the rest of the MSM follow Matthews’ lead, take a breather from their feeding frenzy, and follow suit? Or will they continue to mischaracterize and misinform?

Why did he put the redemptive part in here at all?
Because sherrod was never the story to begin with, the reaction to her comments by the racists in the audience was the intended story. It just became difficult to ignore sherrod's racist comments towards Tea Partiers and anyone that objects to Hussein's far leftwing policies.
Whether it was the immigration law in AZ, the healthcare bill, the financial bill… the stunningly consistent theme from the left in 2010 is this: We don't read, we pontificate. We don't read, we just villify. In fairness, maybe they can't read. It is the dictionary definition of ignorance.
Credit where credit is due, Mr. Matthews. Doesn't undo all your past ignorance, but it's a start. Facts may just win out yet.
They're still using the 1992 playbook. Unfortunately for them, it's 2010, and technology allows us to track their ignorance and use it against them. Consistently. The day of the ruling class is over.
Character assassination is the flavor of the month right now with the progressive socialist media. It will be interesting to see how this plays out in the next round. I personally am hoping they burn their own house down.

Five months after President Obama announced a $1.25 billion settlement for black farmers who faced overt discrimination by the USDA in the eighties and nineties — and several days after the Sherrod case brought the issue up again — Congress again refused to authorize the money.
On Thursday, the Senate quietly stripped the funding for the Pigford II settlement and several other programs from a supplemental war funding bill. Senators then unanimously passed their version of the bill, which will go back to the House.
Conservative opposition to the settlement came to light last week in the aftermath of the Shirley Sherrod scandal. A farm collective founded by Sherrod and her husband that was forced out of business by the discriminatory practices received a $13 million settlement as part of Pigford last year, just before she was hired by the USDA. Some, including Rep. Steve King (R-IA), have called the settlement a fraud.
Majority Leader Harry Reid blamed Republicans for the failure to pass Pigford.
"I hoped that tonight the Senate could finally right a wrong that has been left unresolved for far too long. But Republicans stood in the way," he said in a statement. "As recent events have reminded us, the fact that justice and fairness were denied to black farmers for so many years continues to have ramifications today. … Republicans should be held accountable for standing in the way of justice for those affected."
But several Democrats — including Sens. Evan Bayh (IN) and Tom Carper (DE) — also voted to block the bill.
BTW the southern whites and blacks were taught to fight one another by labor unions playing victim politics–Breirtbart is more and more looking like a genius!! They talk about a section of the tape cut from the middle of her speech to make her look bad. They talk about what an incompetent propagandist Breitbart is. They generally agree that Sherrod has a case. Classic. This has to be the most dishonest political site ever! At least it makes me laugh.

As for Breitbart, he used the tape to expose the racism of the NAACP, and after that the government fired Sherrod without question or thought. If you think about it, she should be after the government that fired her and not Breitbart who just showed a tape. Besides, the government did the exact same thing with Van Jones and he has admited to being both racist and communist.
If you want dishonesty, just look to our federal government and everyone around it. Nothing but dishonesty is in office now.

Yeah, she made a mistake. Sure, I believe she felt bad about it and rethought her position. But the audience reacted in a despicable manner while taking her out of context. She (and Hubby) have proven to be less than innocent of "racist" thoughts and words. They are NOT a credit to J.C. or M.L.K. jr. They are as bad as those against whom they rail. Where are the adults? Speaking of Sordid Shirley Sherrod, she let out the "teaser" today that she was going to sue Breitbart. Saying it, and doing it, are two different things. I notice she said she had a "friend of the family" who was an attorney that she was in consultation with, and was trying to choose an attorney. i wonder who she will choose? I'm sure Gloria Allred and a host of ambulance chasers are all lined up.
It is a FACT that Sherrod is a Professional Litigant, and a Race Baiting, Shakedown Hustler. Like my old attorney used to tell me: "You can sue the Bishop of Boston for Bastardry, but that don't make it so".

On a real serious note, why the brouhaha about Shirley Sherrod, the NAACP, the New Black Panther Party and Race?
The answer to that question is easy. The Obama Administration would rather make EVERYTHING in our lives, and everything in the news about Race.
It is much easier to inflame, incite and outrage the populace over race, than discuss the real issues. The two Wars and Gitno. The skyrocketing unemployment. Durable goods orders are down again. Factory inventories are down. The infrastructure is crumbling in our country. There is a wave of illegal immigrants washing over an unguarded border, and instead of addressing the Boy Scouts today, Obumble sat on the couch on the View with the Fat Chicks, kicking off his 2012 campaign.
Personally, there is something strangely eerie about where we are. It reminds me of J. Edgar Hoover and COINTELPRO and the Black Panthers in the late 1960's. This time, Eric Holder and the DOJ is Hoover, and they are doing everything in their power to incite violence with the Tea Party.

That's not what I saw Howard Dean on Hardball saying he saw on FOX what they reported that Andrew Breitbart posted.
Something different from the media. How about that. He pretty much got it right. Breitbart's journalism took down a beaurocrat. This lady – who's parent was killed in the deep south during segregation – who went out of her way to help the white farmers on the tape – should apologize to Breitbart and thank him for helping her get fired without cause to make a point that nobody got. Good job, douchebag.
She can try to sue until the cows come home. Ain't gonna happen. Mrs. Sherrod is just acting for the cameras and trying to create discord for the Republicans. She's doing the handiwork for the Obama administration and the NAACP to hype "racism" (typical Democrat game) and to help deflect attention away from Obama's failed policies. (Big fail).
Firstly, people don't boast to the media that they're going to "sue" someone. Secondly, she gave a speech before the public (NAACP membership) and to do so she forfeits the right of disclosure of any excerpts of said speech unless it can be substantiated there is "malice" involved. Breitbart is sharp as a tack and as his article will indicate he used her video to show that the "NAACP" tolerates "racism" – but nothing he wrote in his article will show "libel" against Ms. Sherrod.
Lastly, at the time of the article and the video production Ms. Sherrod held a "appointed" position in her employment with the USDA as a Field Director. For this reason, she has a higher burden of proof to meet what is called "actual malice". In other words, Ms. Sherrod can't rely on "common law malice" in a normal run of the mill libel tort action.
Bottom line. Ms. Sherrod is simply using this opportunity to stir the flames with the media and as usual they will gladly assist until the smoke clears. Her 15 minutes of fame simply turned into 20 minutes. Nothing to see here. Move along. Breitbart comes away with advertisement and credibility. Go Andrew.

Actually, I think we live in three Americas. One America consists of the Libertarian/Conservative, Tea Party, Patriot type. Another consists of the "progressive"/revolutionary, welfare queen, low-life type.
But it's the third America that makes all the difference. Probably the "majority" in this country, they are the distracted/aloof, "innocent," citizen type. These are mostly good people, pursuing their own happiness. But they don't have a CLUE about the political minutia that "we" dive into. (God bless them)

Part of me wonders if Matthews took a jab at Dean because of deans recent altercations with Fox, and Fox's direct rebuttal. Every once in a while, we see instances of hope in this 'race' based attempt to paralyze opposition to 'progress'.
I think most thinking and informed folks are beginning to understand that this administration's (and 'progessive') use of the race card as a political weapon is multifaceted. It's meant to create divisions in white America, and solidify the unity of black America. Kind of a killing two birds with one stone effort.
One wonders, what will happen if black folks begin to think apart from the crowd? What happens when objectivity begins to trump racial identity?
Here is an instance for some hope:
I've related on here before that I am in a 'mixed' marriage. My wife is black. I've written that she is well educated, a PhD. I've written that unfortunately, she was raised on the fall back excuses and eye towards race that stifle the black Community and makes it difficult to for us to move towards a post-racial existence.
Anyway, she had been a die hard Democrat and, of course, Obama supporter. I say had been, because I have worked hard to try to at least bring some objectivity into her life. Democrats and Obama could do no wrong in her eyes. Republicans were rotten, cared only about whites and where a corporate entity, in her view.
I recently asked her why she, and most black folks vote Democrat. She said because historically, the Democrats have cared more about and supported black rights more. And because of MLK.
Now, my wife's PhD is in the sciences, so please, don't be overly hard on here sense of history. Her thought process is a microcism of the problem. History tells us the the Dems were not so supportive of Civil Rights. And it tells us the MLK was not a Democrat. But, anyway, this is what she and most blacks believe. I told her a bit about Dixiecrats and LBJ and such, and tried to explain that MLK wasn't a Democrat. She didn't believe me.
Anyway, she went out to dinner with a client recently. A black male physician. She came home from that dinner and said, 'oh my god, you need to meet him. He sounds just like you when he talked about Obama and politics.' She asked if I knew that MLK wasn't a Democrat. I reminded her that I had told her that, but she didn't believe me. Interesting though, she believed a black acquaintance when previously she didn't believe her white husband.
She said that this particular black physician talked about personal responsibility and the differences between the government protecting equal opportunity rather than trying to legislate equal outcomes.
These were all the things that her white husband had been talking to her about for months. But all I got in return was…….wait for it………'You just don't like the idea of a black man running the country.'
And it made me realize why the Democrats/Progressives work so incredibly hard to keep race in the news as a divisive weapon. It made me realize why the NAACP and other groups work so hard to marginalize and belittle Conservative (I prefer to call them Common Sense) blacks and label them as Uncle Toms:
If blacks heard more and more fellow blacks disagreeing with 'progressives', Obama and the Democrats; it might actually get more and more thinking about how their lives are truly affected by all this.
And lord knows, the NAACP, the Democrats, the progressives and Obama don't want that nice voting block they have assembled and keep marching in lock-step group think to begin to start thinking for themselves.

Hi Cowboy. I've been reading some about ComCast and it seems that rather then being your usual lefties they are actually concerned about making money. That being the case they may take a look at the split in the cable news ratings and see that Fox has about half (or a little more) while the rest is split among CNN, HLN and MSNBC. They may figure that if they actually pull to the centre in their reporting they could have a few shows to the left and the right and feed off both Fox and CNN/HLN while retaining a good piece of their current audience. They could get rid of the crazies like Obie and tell Maddow to tone it down a bit and steal a couple of conservatives. They could actually make money and at the same time be a honest news network.

I used to defend Matthews because of moments of decency and honesty like this but they've come way too rarely recently and he's treated far too many decent people horribly for me to change my mind about him again.

It is not surprising though, as most self-sufficient people have better things to do than feed their ego at the public expense. It would be a slap in the face of the founding fathers for the federal government to use taxpayer funds to bail out a particular state. "Taxation without representation" began the revolution which resulted in this nation. If any taxpayer funds are used to bail out a state, then the citizens of the other 49 states would be "taxed without representation". There would be a figurative (and perhaps literal) hell to pay if that occured.

They are saying her father was murdered by a white man as though someone came in the middle of the night in a KKK outfit, the truth is that there was a dispute over cattle in which the neighbor accused her father of stealing his cows. It seems that something ensued and no one is sure what happened at this point except that her father was shot and the man was not indicted for murder. It wasn't about race it was about cattle. Shirley Sherrod has no case here against Andy Breitbart. Sherrod has the burden of proof as a plaintiff. I don't
think she can muster a case here and then take the witness stand and be grilled by Breitbart's lawyers. The best
defense against slander or libel is truth. Did Shirley say what she said before the NAACP? I don't think I've
ever seen a court case based on "taken outa context" win. Either she said it or did not say it (discrimination

Dear Mr. Breitbart:
I was discharged by the State of California Employment Development Department (EDD)—a federally-funded agency—in 2006 after prevailing in a racial discrimination complaint in front of the California State Personnel Board (SPB) in 2005 (SPB Case No. 03-1420A). My complaint challenged foreign language requirements (Spanish and Tagalog) imposed on a set of position conversions from part-time to full-time. According to both year 2000 census data and Department call center records, the Spanish requirement, for instance, excluded 94 percent of African-Americans and 82 percent of Caucasians between the ages of 18-64 residing in California. The Tagalog requirement excluded 99.9 percent of every race between the ages of 18-64 residing in California. When obliged to produce a stringent business need for these foreign language requirements, the federally funded EDD was unable to do so.
A simple check of the EDD’s hiring practices will reveal that it has been imposing similar foreign language requirements on a vast array of positions over a period of decades. This practice has adversely affected tens of thousands of African American and Caucasian applicants across the entire state and possibly nationwide. In essence, this amounts to racial discrimination on a mass scale. The discriminatory foreign language requirements would even exclude President Obama from hiring consideration. The SPB strongly rebuked the EDD in my case. Despite that, the EDD has literally “thumbed its nose” at the SPB and continues to this day to impose foreign language requirements without a stringent business need. At my hearing in front of the SPB in Los Angeles, one of the Board members expressed great concern about the potential of the unsupported foreign language requirements to bring about a class action lawsuit. Given the scope of the problem, combined with the refusal of the federal administration or State to correct the situation, class action remains a very real possibility even today.
Approximately 19 months after my successful racial discrimination complaint, the federally-funded EDD fired me, citing alleged irregularities on my employment application that I signed under penalty of perjury roughly ten years ago. The case is now being litigated in civil court. I believe the evidence will ultimately demonstrate retaliation by the State in reaction to my exposure of their racial discrimination on a mass scale.
Interestingly, the person who fired me was Unemployment Insurance Deputy Director Deborah Bronow. Considering that my former position, Employment Program Representative, is an entry-level step into the Department, it is highly unusual for an official in the highest echelon of an organization with roughly 10,000 employees to execute such a termination. Yet, this is exactly what she testified to doing. Moreover, she testified that she did not conduct a thorough investigation of my prior employment. In addition, she neither interviewed me about the allegations nor did she check with the parties who vetted me at the point of hire. Considering Ms. Bronow’s prestigious position in the Department, my case has statewide, if not federal, implications.
During this process I contacted the NAACP, both at the national level and in Los Angeles, in order to share with them what I knew about federally funded EDD’s program of racial discrimination. Given the magnitude of the disparate impact against Caucasians and especially against African Americans, I thought the NAACP would enthusiastically welcome the evidence I possess. Both regionally and nationally, this organization refused to contact me to obtain my corroborated and authenticated evidence. I also contacted the offices of Rev. Jessie Jackson and Louis Farrakhan, but to no avail. The racial discrimination against African Americans and Caucasians in California still goes unabated on a mass scale today. The Service Employees International Union, the organization representing State of California government employees, was notified as well, but took no action either.
I was emboldened to write this letter to you in the wake of the controversy that recently arose in reference to USDA employee Shirley Sherrod. My experience supports your position that the NAACP, and other like organizations, condone racist behavior and turn a “blind eye” toward public policies and practices that promote racial discrimination in the workplace. Instead of expressing outrage, the NAACP chose to do nothing when confronted with facts that showed that 94% of African Americans were being excluded from employment consideration due to unsubstantiated foreign language requirements.
I have paid a high price for opposing illegal racial discrimination within a federally-funded state agency and it is my hope that you will find my story compelling.
