NAACP Statement on Resignation of Shirley Sherrod

(BALTIMORE, MD) NAACP President and CEO Benjamin Todd Jealous issued the following statement today after learning of the resignation of Shirley Sherrod of the United States Department of Agriculture:
“Since our founding in 1909, the NAACP has been a multi-racial, multi-faith organization that– while generally rooted in African American communities– fights to end racial discrimination against all Americans.
We concur with US Agriculture Secretary Vilsack in accepting the resignation of Shirley Sherrod for her remarks at a local NAACP Freedom Fund banquet.
Racism is about the abuse of power. Sherrod had it in her position at USDA. According to her remarks, she mistreated a white farmer in need of assistance because of his race.
We are appalled by her actions, just as we are with abuses of power against farmers of color and female farmers.
Her actions were shameful. While she went on to explain in the story that she ultimately realized her mistake, as well as the common predicament of working people of all races, she gave no indication she had attempted to right the wrong she had done to this man.
The reaction from many in the audience is disturbing. We will be looking into the behavior of NAACP representatives at this local event and take any appropriate action.
We thank those who brought this to our national office’s attention, as there are hundreds of local fundraising dinners each year.
Sherrod’s behavior is even more intolerable in light of the US Department of Agriculture’s well documented history of denying opportunities to African American, Latino, Asian American, and Native American farmers, as well as female farmers of all races. Currently, justice for many of these farmers is being held up by Congress. We would hope all who share our outrage at Sherrod’s statements would join us in pushing for these cases to be remedied.

Now if only he posted a similar appology to the Tea Party. That might be too much to hope for.
The difference between the Tea Parties and the NAACP is night and day. The Tea Parties have a record of IMMEDIATELY expelling racists WITHOUT 1st being notified by news reports. The incident in this story happened at an NAACP event in which the subject was applauded, not criticized or expelled. If not for the video of this incident, the NAACP would have gone on their merry way blaming the Tea Parties for all of the racism in the world.
Oh, yes. They're real appalled – that they got caught on camera. I'm sure they'll be stripping away the NAACP memberships of every audience member in that room as well since they were all widly applauding her racist comments.

I hate to quibble (well, that isn't really true…) but:
1. "Racism is about the abuse of power."- Incorrect! Abuse of power… is usually about arrogance, perversion, and/or immorality. "Racism", is about misguided, ill-founded, assumptions related to the notion that character and morality are determined by one’s genetics, and ultimately a denial of one’s mind as an independent entity which is free to choose.
2. "We are appalled by her actions"- They never really said they disagreed with what she said or WHY that which she said was so wrong. Which “action”, the failure to do her job and help the people she was supposed to be helping? Or,… talking about it at the fund raiser? Isn’t WHAT she was saying really the problem?
In the end, the second to the last paragraph really makes the point they’re trying to get across, “We aren’t to blame for this, the government is STILL the problem….”
Some things may never change…

I agree completely. But as far as their federal funding, take it further. There should be absolutely no federal funding for NAACP, ACORN, or any other interest group. Let individuals decide which interest group to contribute to. Let the market decide the success or failure of their cause. If a white organization were in existance similar to the NAACP, it would be the talk of all media and race baiters in the news. The NAACP is trying to remain relevant today, despite the fact that there are probably more opportunities for African Americans in this country today than in any other time in our history. But the NAACP only has the race card to play because, after all, it's big business. Just as Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton, who have made a living off of race bating. So what better way to maintain your relevancy than to keep on shouting "Racism?" As long as they keep doing that, the donations keep coming in and the Federal Funding or grants (not to mention the tax exemptions) keep showering down on them. What a bunch of jerks (and I could use a much harsher noun) to keep on accusing people of racism just to stay in business.

Not only does the NAACP practice reverse racism but chooses to shut out black conservatives. This is a true story. I lived in a small town that had a terrible drug problem in the black community. The leaders of the community wanted to start a program to lift young kids out. They decided on a program that would include atheletes and business men of color. It was the early 1990's when Clarence Thomas had just been confirmed to the Supreme Court. The local NAACP fought to STOP Clarence Thomas from speaking to the youth! I will never forget this as long as I live. I was mortified. Instead they selected Ben Carson to speak, in part because he was a surgeon and not a conservative figure. I wonder how many more stories like this are out there.

So, does that mean he will impeach Eric Holder if Holder were to decide cases based on race? Would Obama get in trouble for favoring one religion (Islam) over others? Dear SG: I respectfully disagree with one point you've made here. There is no such thing as "reverse racism." There is racism plain and simple and it's ugly no matter who the racist is.
…and this remedy is – what? More money, more land to said female/black/Latino/ Native American/etc., etc. farmers? If the Department of Agriculture (founded in 1935 during the "New Deal") is so racist and evil, then the solution is: get rid of it (along with the Departments of Energy and Education).
I don't think I've ever seen such rich irony and poetic justice. What has to be driving the these racist groups crazy is knowing that the source of the video tape is extremely likely to be a person of color. And given the number of Tea Party members of African decent who have come out recently against the NAACP, they must be experiencing about a ten on the sphincter scale. This story is starting to move faster than Barack Obama's mouth at an ACORN rally. Now, ol' Shirley says, that wasn't the whole story. This episode took place 24 years ago, and she uses it as an example to explain to people that racism is wrong. The NAACP criticized her for not going back to the farmer and making it right. She says she became friends with the farmer and she realized that helping everybody no matter what color they are is what is important.

I know I'll get some thumbs down, but I see this as one little positive step for the NAACP. I applaud Mr. Jealous for this. However, with that being said, there is no doubt NAACP still has a long way to go in regards to their bigotry and I do believe that they still owe an apology to the Tea Party's and they need to quit "Stirring the Pot".
NONE of the chain of events on this matter should be surprising to anyone! Sherrod’s resignation is simply a bump in the road to race-baiting. As far as the NAACP is concerned, nothing to be really concerned about. Sherrod’s resignation will be deemed as the NAACP “policing themselves” and you can bank on the fact their actions will be applauded and considered “the way something of this matter should be done”. Take note Tea Partiers!!!
And does anyone actually think the crowds’ reaction will be considered of any significance? Hell no it won’t. It’ll be pawned off as nothing. Why? Because this is the purported “post racial era” in America’s history that our Man/Child-in-Chief promotes: Keep tensions high between “his people” and the “white race of power” and you could virtually guarantee your grip of power on a country. This is “politics” people. The same politics used to prevent good people from government and the courts for years. The Tea Party Movement is the latest in a slew of “race card fraud” (Thomas Sowell) that has only one purpose, and that’s to continually shout above the fray until it’s believed as gospel. Could it be that the NAACP has run out of legitimate “causes on behalf of people of color”, that they’ve become so bored with their own mission so instead take on what they consider bigger and better things? Having a man of color as the POTUS can get them “more stuff” maybe? Who knows? One thing is for certain, the credibility of the NAACP is in the toilet and no cleaners on the shelves will remove the permanent stains to their reputation. I thank President Jealous for making some important points in his unequivocal repudiation of racism.
It is extremely important to point out, as President Jealous eloquently did, that what we saw here was NOT the norm.
President Jealous effectively pointed out that the norm is that farmers of Color (and women) are traditionally the ones bludgeoned by the system.
I was glad to see the President Jealous made no excuses nor proffered explanation or qualification. He simply said it was wrong. And then pointed out how out of the ordinary it is to see a power abuse against white folks.

The abrupt cut-off of the video lends credence to lefty speculation that Sherrod's story was intended, right from the git-go, to highlight her own awakening to a higher truth re: race vs economics. As she begins to creep up on her punchline — while still acknowleging the race angle (perhaps out of a knowing appreciation of her audience) — the video comes to an abrupt end.
It's a persuasive interpretation the left is peddling. Put it to rest, Andrew. Show us the whole video.

That's actually one thing that can't be pinned on Surly Shirley. She gradermated with a Master of Leftist Arts before "Mumia" (actually Wesley Cook) was played-back at a later grabumation ceremony in 2000.
But I mention Wes' rant at Antioch, because it is truly representative of what Antioch stood for. I visited the campus once, to find it festoon with banners decrying wh1tey. I found in the Antioch library men's and women's bathrooms, side by side, where the men's room door had been significantly defaced, with the letters "S E" carved in the door, preceding the word "MEN." On the women's bathroom door, there "WOMEN" was crossed out, and "WOMYN" was painted in its place. A once beautiful campus, it physically went to pot(!) a decade before its closure, and is now just a decaying husk.
The delicious irony is that they have a separate business school, which appears to be doing alright (in terms of mere survival. I can't speak to its academic value). Imagine, Antioch hanging by a thread of capitalism!

When is biggovernment.com going to print a retraction of the story, or admit that they edited the video to take out the more important parts where the woman changed her mind and attitude and ended up helping the farmer out?
I seriously doubt they or faux news will. If you have any integrity you will apologize to Shirley Sherrod and help her get her job back. She admitted she was wrong, AND changed her attitude, just as many former racists have.

Actually, the story does not dispute racial bias. It re-states the same thing with the addition of "I did enough". It still says that Sherrod admitted using race as a bias against the white farmers. It still shows the reaction of the NAACP audience applauding when she says she didn't put forth her full efforts. That story you mention is by no means a "slam-dunk". What is a slam-dunk is the Center for American Progress editing out the footage of the "proud racist" showing that he was immediately expelled from the Tea Party he was trying to infiltrate. What is a slam-dunk is MSNBC trying to show "angry white racist men with assault rifles" and editing out the fact that the guy with the rifle was a black guy at a Tea Party.
The story Sherrod is telling now is gaining traction & credibility by the minute … and it fits the video clip right up to the point where it abruptly ends. Even the white man's wife has come forward to defend Sherrod as a lifelong friend.
The only reason for not posting the whole clip — or at least the next few minutes from where it was stopped — is to avoid confirming what is becoming increasingly obvious: this was a totally dishonest hit-job based on a carefully edited video clip.
If Breitbart has an ounce of integrity, he'll post the unedited video clip.

The only reason Mr Jealous issued this statement now is because he was caught with a rock in a hard place. He HAD TO say this to keep face. He claimed the Tea Party were racists but low and behold thanks to Big Government (again) this video was found and shown. My question to Mr Jealous is why didn't you police this woman back in March when this video was shot not 4 months later. She was speaking at an NAACP event. This is wrong and actually illegal, there are laws that prevent discrimination this goes for everyone. This clearly was reverse discrimination and she was totally in the wrong for saying this. She should have resigned like she did and hold her head down in shame because of her statements, but not resign after she was found out but someone should have asked for it back in March when this racist statement was made. Nice Going Big Government. Never issue Andrew Breitbart a challenge to find out the truth because he will.
